Cracks, Dings & Unpleasant Things: Caring for a Damaged Windshield We’ve all had it happen. You’re driving along, minding your own business, and crack! A rock or some other invisible object collides with your windshield. Sometimes it’s from a dump truck, sometimes it’s completely out of nowhere, but either way, you wind up with damage to the glass. If it’s not directly in your field of vision, it’s easy to just write it off as a minor problem, but it can turn into a major problem in no time. Here are some tips on dealing with a damaged windshield, courtesy of Road & Travel Magazine. •

If the ding has a cone shape, a circle deep in the glass, or looks like a small star, have it repaired promptly.

Don’t touch the damaged area or attempt to repair it yourself, or it will make repairs harder to complete.

As a temporary measure, put a piece of clear tape, like packing tape, over the ding.

Don’t wash the vehicle-especially through the car wash. A high-pressure wash can cause further damage.

Slamming the doors and closing them with the windows rolled all the way up can cause vibration or build up of air pressure, causing the ding to spread.

Don’t park in the sun, or run the defroster, heater or air conditioning on high settings. These conditions can stress and weaken a damaged windshield.

When you’re finally ready to get that damaged glass repaired, here are some local services that can help you out. Contain Yourself: The Latest in Moving & Storage If you haven’t used them, you’ve probably at least seen mobile moving containers. They’re the boxy, wheel-less, trailer-like units that sit in people’s driveways as they’re beginning the relocation process. These pods are a relatively new concept, but they have revolutionized the moving industry. Gone are the days when you had to either maneuver around mountains of boxes until moving day, or let the movers haphazardly pack you up at the last minute. With the advent of these containers, you can begin sorting, organizing, packing, and storing your belongings ahead of time, and at your own pace. Once the container is filled, companies can either store it for you, or move it to the new location. If you’re looking for such a service for moving, or for some off-site storage, here are some companies to contact. PODS Moving & Storage   (888) 394-8530

HUNGRY

Don’t Judge a Squash by Its Cover MIRLITON. WEIRD WORD, WEIRD-LOOKING FOOD. If you weren’t born and raised in South Louisiana, you may not recognize this odd little squash in writing or in person. And forget trying to pronounce it. If you’re not familiar, it’s typically pronounced, “meh-li-tawn.” Native to Mexico, it’s also known as chayote, or the vegetable pear, which very aptly describes its appearance. Like a lot of our best regional cuisine, it’s thought to have made its way into these parts via the Caribbean around the mid-1800s, and has become quite ubiquitous, due to its versatility. What’s it taste like? As food writer Sara Roahen describes in her book, Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table: “A raw mirliton crunches like a potato; it tastes like very green cucumber, and a little like zucchini. Sautéed, it tastes like starchy apples; boiled and fried, its translucent green flesh suggests what a honeydew melon would look, feel, and taste like if honeydew melon were a vegetable.” Mirlitons are harvested in the fall, so you can find them at farmer’s markets, roadside stands, and grocery stores, like Rouse’s, that stock lots of local produce. Many people enjoy them pickled, fried, and stuffed with shrimp, but there are a multitude of recipes out there. If you’re looking for a way to diversify your Thanksgiving dinner a little, consider adding it to the traditional cornbread dress. See the recipe to the right.

MIRLITON CORNBREAD DRESSING RECIPE

(Courtesy of Louisiana Cookin’ Magazine)

Ingredients 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 4 mirlitons (chayote squash), cored and cut into ½-inch cubes 1 pound ground Italian sausage 1 cup chopped celery 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped carrot ½ cup chopped red bell pepper ¼ cup chopped jalapeño peppers 1 pound day-old cornbread, cut in 1-inch cubes 1 cup chicken stock 1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 1 (7.4 ounce) jar chopped chestnuts (about 1 cup) 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley Directions Preheat oven to 375°. Spray a 3-quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat; stir in mirliton, and cook until tender and lightly browned, about 10 minutes. In an extra-large skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat until cooked through, about 8 minutes; add celery, onion, carrot, and peppers, and cook, stirring frequently, until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in cornbread, and toss until well coated with the vegetable mixture. Pour ¼ cup chicken stock over cornbread, stirring well to combine, repeating until cornbread appears damp. Stir in mirliton, salt, pepper, chestnuts, and parsley. Spread evenly in prepared baking dish, and bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately.

Honor Thy Hostess Good manners are in short supply these days, don’t you think? Few people RSVP anymore, and too many people think thank-you notes are old-fashioned and passé. And that’s a shame. Even the simplest gestures to let someone know we appreciate their efforts can go a long way toward spreading a little goodwill amongst our fellow humans. Speaking of nice gestures, if you’re going to a friend or relative’s home for Thanksgiving -- whether it’s just for dinner or for an overnight or more -- it’s a really lovely custom to bring along a host or hostess gift. This could be anything from a nice bottle of wine or fancy chocolates to a set of bar glasses or a potted plant -- or any kind of houseware or consumable item that you think they’d like. This is not mandatory, of course -- which makes it all the more special! If you’re in need of a host or hostess gift, check out some of our fabulous local gift shops for a multitude of cool options.

Curb Your Consumption: How to Avoid Holiday Binging Regret. It’s the one gift you really don’t want from the holiday season. Much like setting a spending budget to avoid racking up credit card bills, it’s good to enter the holiday season with a strategy for maintaining reasonable calorie intake, so you don’t rack up the pounds. There’s no reason you can’t enjoy all those parties and dinners, though. EatingWell. com offers up some tips on how to curb your consumption.

REST UP

A recent study found that after a poor night’s sleep, adults ate about an extra 300 calories and tended to choose higher-fat, highercalorie foods.

CHOOSE WISELY

Research suggests that you’ll consume the largest quantity of the foods you eat first, so try fresh veggies and hummus over chips and creamy dip to save 120 calories per serving.

POUR WISELY

Count 1-2-3 when pouring yourself a glass of wine, to get an estimated 5-ounce serving. Many glasses are half full with 10 ounces, which quickly turns 125 calories into a 250.

DOWNSIZE YOUR PLATE

Downsize your plate to trick your brain into thinking you are eating more. An appetizer or salad plate instead of a dinner plate can result in eating 40 percent less, cutting 1,200 calories.

THINK SMALL

Take smaller sips and bites to trick your brain into eating 30 percent fewer calories. Studies find that when you take nibbles, chew your food longer and eat slower, your brain thinks you’ve eaten more. If you could use a little extra help figuring out how to regulate your holiday eating, or if you need someone to consult on matters of food and nutrition impacts on health, here are some local nutritionists.

6 Ways to Ward off Colds & Flu As you’re probably well aware, cold and flu season is well under way. Getting a flu shot (link to blog) is a great first step in protecting yourself, or at least lessening the severity of the flu virus, but there are other proactive measures you can take to boost your immune system this fall and winter. Here are 6 helpful tips in warding off sickness, courtesy of Health.com. • Eat a nutrient-packed, well-rounded diet This diet should be rich in fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins.

• Wash your hands with soap and water Plain soap and water is really all you need. Antibacterial soap isn’t necessary or good for us in the long run. • Use hand sanitizer If you don’t have access to soap and water to scrub, hand sanitizer is the next best thing. •Try probiotics Bacteria in your gut may affect your body’s ability to fend off infections, so it’s beneficial to eat foods with live and active cultures.

• Exercise regularly As a general rule, the Mayo Clinic suggests at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. People who live more sedentary lifestyles are far more likely to get colds or other infectious diseases. • Get enough sleep Getting fewer than 7-9 hours of sleep nightly results in a higher risk of not only getting an infectious illnesses, but also reactivation of a past disease.

Ho Ho Holiday Budgeting One of the best parts of the holiday season is buying gifts for other people. Yes, it’s delightful to watch their reactions and bask in the spirit of giving -- but there’s also something to be said for guilt-free, sanctioned shopping sprees! It’s so much easier to spend lavishly if you apply the magnanimous qualities of generosity and selflessness, right? Yikes. This kind of thinking can wreak havoc on your finances before you know it, though. To help maintain some spending sanity, here are 5 helpful tips on holiday budgeting, courtesy of the American Bankers Association. Make a list of who you’re buying for, what you want to get them, and how much you want to spend per person. Shop for bargains. Lots of retailers offer special deals throughout the holiday season, and buying online items together can cut down on shipping costs. Curb impulse shopping and spending by sticking to your list. If you’ve forgotten someone, add them to your holiday budget and, if necessary, adjust the amounts you spend on others so you keep the same total. Plan for other expenses, like Christmas cards, postage for cards, shipping for gifts, gift bags and/or gift wrap, decorations, food and drink for holiday meals, and travel expenses. Beware of credit cards. Be sure to apply your spending limits when paying with credit, and check your credit card statements carefully for any unauthorized charges. If you need one-on-one help with budgeting on a broader scale, or if you need guidance on other money-topics like investments, insurance, estate planning, retirement planning, saving for college, tax planning/prep, consider meeting with a financial advisor. Here are a few local ones to get your started.

Discord at Dinner: Dealing with Holiday Family Feuds Most of us have been there. You’re attending a family Thanksgiving celebration, and you’re a little concerned about how it’s going to play out. It could be extended family, or even immediate family that’s maybe experiencing some minor tension or major dissent. You cross your fingers and hope that the magic of the holiday will miraculously result in smooth sailing. The only goal is to come together and enjoy one lovely meal. How hard can that be, right? As people arrive, pleasantries are exchanged, wine is poured, dinner is served, and then it happens. One troublemaker hurls out an opinion or inflammatory statement that sparks a powderkeg. Voices are raised, things get ugly, and maybe personal. Feelings are hurt, the spirit of the holiday is killed, and dinner is ruined. Even worse, people walk away without any resolution, and it may even cause future estrangement, and a major rift in the family. It doesn’t have to be like this. For one day, people can set their differences aside and get through -- and maybe even appreciate -- a little family togetherness. But, it may take some effort. According to Psychology Today, there are steps you can take to reduce the chances of World War III breaking out. Eliminate tensions at the source. The participants most likely to create tensions over Thanksgiving are those who have already done so on previous occasions. Approach the key players ahead of time and ask them to put their squabble aside for the holiday. Have reasonable expectations. If your family’s Thanksgiving is usually boring or annoying, it would be unwise to hope this year will be different. Reflect on years past, the good and the bad, and anticipate elements of both. Create a positive Thanksgiving mood. Complaints and negativity are contagious. One way to set the tone is to send participants an advance email asking them to each prepare a list of three things for which they are especially grateful this year. And share them at dinner. Set ground rules. Create a list of topics you want people to avoid discussing and send it to them beforehand. Topics should include politics, religion, or any specific personal or hot-button issues that are likely to create tensions between guests.
