Get Your Mind Into the Gutter Hurricane season can be brutal in Southeast Louisiana. Even if we dodge the major bullets, chances are, by the end of the season, we’ve withstood at least a few storms, with all the leaves and debris accumulation that goes along with them. And your gutters have paid the price. For proper gutter maintenance, you need to: Clean them out, of course Make sure your downspouts are working properly. Check for holes and cracks in the caulking, as well as corrosion, sagging, bending and missing fasteners. Verify that your gutters are firmly attached to your home. Cut or trim overhanging tree branches. As you might imagine, this requires a lot of time, effort, ladder-climbing, and sharp tools. If you have neither the time, inclination, nor coordination to handle all of this for yourself -- or if your gutters are beyond help -- check out these local services that offer cleaning, repair, and installation.

A Well-Oiled Machine: Conventional vs. Synthetic When it comes to food and personal care products, it’s pretty much always best to go with the less processed options that are closest to their natural form. But motor oil is a different story. Conventional oil is derived directly from crude oil, while the synthetic variety is the result of more advanced refining processes. Which is better? According to Consumer Reports, many automakers require vehicle owners to use synthetic motor oil because it’s designed to be more effective at resisting breakdowns, withstanding high temperatures, and flowing in cold temperatures -- all of which results in fewer oil changes and can extend the life of your engine. The downside, however, is that synthetic motor oil can cost two to four times as much as regular oil. It’s helpful, but is it necessary? The bottom line: unless your owner’s manual specifies synthetic, it comes down to personal preference. Still unsure? Here are some local oil change services that could be of assistance:

HUNGRY
Drive-Thru Diet: McDonald’s Healthier Options As the vast majority of people become increasingly aware of how our diets affect our overall health and wellbeing, the marketplace is responding with healthier options. Natural and organic foods are filling more shelf space at grocery stores, and even restaurant chains like McDonald’s are getting in on the act. CNN recently posted an article on the changes the fast food giant has made to their menu. Counting your calories or cutting back on carbs? They recommend the Southwest grilled chicken salad. Skip the dressing, but the roasted corn and tomatoes, black beans, cilantro lime glaze, and chili lime tortilla strips add plenty of flavor, and only add up to 350 calories. An Egg McMuffin without Canadian bacon or butter has only 250 calories. Keep the bacon and skip the English muffin to cut out the carbs. Make it an Egg White Delight McMuffin for another option. The menu even includes healthy choices like fruit, yogurt, and oatmeal. And did you know a hamburger is only 250 calories, and a four-piece serving of chicken McNuggets has only 180 calories? The article suggest lots of menu items for kids, as well as people with various diet goals and restrictions, including reduced salt and gluten. Check out the McDonald’s website (www.mcdonalds.com) for their full menu, nutrition calculator, and details on their commitment to food quality, including their policies on antibiotics in chicken, cage-free eggs, and sustainable beef.

CELEBRATING
Oktoberfest in St. Tammany: Party Like It’s 1810 If you read up on the origins of Oktoberfest, you’re likely to find two different stories. One credits the Munich celebration of the October 12, 1810 marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The other simply says… in the old days, October was when it was finally cool enough to brew lagers. Hooray! Let’s celebrate. The best place to celebrate Oktoberfest is at a brew pub with plenty of good options on tap. Here are a few really cool establishments in West St. Tammany Parish that can offer just that.

Fall Fashion Boutiques Can you feel it in the air? Autumn is here, so it’s time to box up the bikinis and bust out the boots. As you swap out your seasonal wardrobes, if you’re feeling less than thrilled with the selection, maybe it’s time to freshen it up with a few trendy pieces. According to Glamour Magazine, these are six of the hottest trends for fall 2017. Moody Florals. Designers have reimagined springy bouquets with a palette of deep blues, purples, and pinks. Much Ado About the Flu While we’re slowly easing out of hurricane season, flu season is sneaking in. There’s no way to inoculate yourself against unpredictable weather, but you can certainly do your best to protect against that dreaded annual viral infection! Do you have questions? We have answers, courtesy of the CDC…
WHEN SHOULD I GET VACCINATED? Flu vaccinations are usually available beginning in August, and experts suggest getting the shot by the end of October, when the earliest outbreaks can start occurring. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop, so plan accordingly.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FLU VACCINATION? IT CAN… • Keep you from getting sick with flu. • Reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization, including among children and older adults. • Serves as an important preventive tool for people with chronic health conditions. • Protect women during and after pregnancy, and protect a baby by passing on mom’s antibodies. may • Make your illness milder if you do get sick. • Protect people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions.

HEALTHY
Trick or Treat & Healthy Teeth It’s almost Halloween, and you know what that means… candy! It’s everywhere you look this time of year, and if you are a trick-or-treat enabler, it’ll be in your house soon, if it isn’t already. Don’t fret. While sweets aren’t exactly good for you, some are better than others. You just have to choose wisely! Where your teeth are concerned, not all candies are created equally. Chocolate lovers, rejoice -- it’s one of your best options for dental health. It rinses off your teeth more easily than most, and dark chocolate has less sugar than milk chocolate. What you want to be aware of are the sticky, sour, and hard candies. Sticky or hard candy are troublesome because they stay in your mouth and/or directly on your teeth longer, raising the risk of cavities. Sour candy is very acidic, which means it can weaken and damage the hard outer shell of your teeth. After your get your Halloween candy fix, you may want to follow up with a good cleaning! Here are some local dentists who can do just that:

Safe & Sound: Bolstering Your Home & Personal Security Face it, it’s a spooky time of year. Ghosts, goblins, horror movies filled with murderous zombies and chainsaw wielding maniacs…what a perfect time to reevaluate personal safety and the security of your home! We can help you out with both. First, coming up on October 29, Tangi Crimestoppers is rolling three events into one during this night of fun, crime prevention, and safety awareness in Ponchatoula’s Memorial Park. The Night Out Against Crime portion will feature live music, trick-or-treating booths, costume contest, law enforcement and K9 demonstrations, games, food, and more. Also taking place, the Hot Wing Cook-Off Challenge and Light the Night Heroes vs. Villains 1Mile Fun Run & 5K. For details, call (985) 634-0590 or visit www.tangicrimestoppers.com/events. And if you want to be extra sure no evil undead individuals or deranged clowns (or even run-of-the-mill burglars) break into your home, here are some local companies who would be more than happy to help you out with your home security needs.

Safeguarding Important Documents We’re still in hurricane season, y’all. After a storm, when you’re without power and you’re trying to assess the damage to your home or business… this is NOT the time to start searching for important documents! Now is the time to consider how best to safeguard vital info. To keep an online copy, you can either purchase a scanner or bring your documents to a local FedEx or Staples store so they can do the scanning. To protect the original documents, you can store them in a waterproof safe or use a safety deposit box at a local bank.
What types of documents need protection? PERSONAL: Birth and marriage certificates, divorce decrees, passports, diploma and military documents, Social Security card, and copies of driver’s license and credit cards. HOME AND PROPERTY: Home deed, mortgage and closing statements; car titles; insurance policies and agent contact info; appraisal documents for valuables. ESTATE: Will, executor and estate planning paperwork, including names and phone numbers. MEDICAL: Medicare or health insurance cards, prescription records, and doctor contact information. FINANCIAL: Stock and bond certificates; IRA or 401(k) account numbers; bank statements; and tax records, including W2s and important receipts.
