Everlasting Outdoor Living While much of the rest of the country is already prepping for a chilly fall and downright cold winter, we in South Louisiana can pretty much always look forward to mild temperatures. Even during January, our coldest month, our average low is around 40 degrees. That’s practically balmy beach weather for folks up north! With our enviable weather, we get to enjoy year-round outdoor living, so there’s no need to ever stow away the grill or patio furniture -- or flip-flops, for that matter. They can’t help you out with the flip-flops, but if you’re sick of “disposable” outdoor furniture that only lasts a couple of seasons, visit the folks at Yoder Home & Patio in Covington. Yoder’s beautiful Polywood furniture selection, made in Ohio by Amish craftsmen, is not only comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and maintenance Article Sponsored By free, it carries a lifetime warranty against fading, splitting, warping, and other hazards that come with exposure. The hardware is hardcore, too -- it’s marinegrade stainless steel, so even salt water will not cause it to rust. And the icing on the cake? It’s eco-friendly, as it’s made from recycled materials like milk and detergent bottles. To browse through the many styles and colors, and to experience Yoder’s superior service firsthand, visit the showroom at 1600 N. Hwy. 190 Suite #2 between 10am and 6pm, or after hours by appointment. They also carry homemade Amish bread, jams, jellies, syrups and specialty mustards, with more items coming soon! For more information, call (985) 900-2188.

Rethinking Relocation A recent survey shows that almost 50% of Americans haven’t moved in the last ten years. Is it because they’re happy where they are? No, it’s because moving is the worst! You have no idea how much junk you own or how much your friends and family love you until you beg them to help you pack it all up and haul it to a new location. On second thought, correction: moving isn’t the worst. Having someone guilt you into helping them move is! Article Sponsored By If you’re ready to downsize, upgrade, or relocate for work or just a change of scenery, don’t stress and don’t strain your relationships with loved ones. We’ve got a trustworthy, professional company right here in Mandeville to do the heavy lifting -- and even the tedious packing! Atmosphere Movers is run by local Marine veteran Chat Stockstill who founded the business back in 1998. From residential to corporate to industrial clients, they handle everything with care. They’ve successfully moved Harry Connick Jr’s piano, antiques, fine art, and even a mummy without incident, so they can be trusted with Grandma’s china! It’s no wonder they have an over 95% repeat customer rate with their dedication to service. They... • are an “Elite Provider” and a “Screened and Certified” vendor for Home Advisor • service the entire state and complete many moves outside of Louisiana • are licensed, bonded and insured • move customers seven days a week Their main office, located at 1840 Highway 59 in Mandeville, is open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. When the Rubber Meets the Road: Fall Edition ‘TIS THE SEASON TO THINK ABOUT... TIRES. FOR REAL, AND HERE’S WHY: (A) Hurricane season peaks this month. (B) About 91% of holiday travel happens in personal vehicles. (C) Underinflated or worn tires greatly increase your risk of an accident. When it comes to hurricanes, we usually think about the supplies we’ll need to stock up on in the event of a power outage, but officials may call for an evacuation. And the holiday travel season is just around the corner. The aforementioned scenarios beg one question: How are your tires? If you need your tires checked, balanced, repaired, or rotated -- or if they’re beyond help, and you need new ones -- here are some local tire stores to meet your needs.

Caffeine Culture in Madisonville There are two kinds of coffee drinkers. The grab-and-go folks, and the savorers. Grab-and-go is all about convenience and expediency, while those who savor want to actually immerse themselves in the total coffee experience. No matter which camp you’re in, you probably want a superior cup of joe, right? Well, you’re in luck. Abita Roasting Company in Madisonville is the total package. Located on the lovely banks of the lazy Tchefuncte River, at 504 Water Street, this quaint creole cottage takes full advantage of the view with its wide, graceful porch and huge brick patio seating areas nestled beneath the live oaks out front. Between the Spanish Moss, lush landscaping, and bubbling sugar kettle fountain, they’ve created a tranquil Louisiana paradise. Inside, you’re greeted by a homey, rustic space with well-worn hardwood floors, lots of personal touches in the three dining areas, a delightfully functional double-sided fireplace, and there’s even a cozy courtyard with a fountain out back, with additional seating. Even if you don’t have time to soak in the ambiance, their service is quick and their excellent coffee is far better than the drive-through chains. It’s their own brew, with multiple blends and single origins, which they also sell by the bag and supply to many restaurants on the Northshore and in New Orleans. While the brew is the star of the show, they also serve great espresso drinks, teas, frozen drinks and smoothies, beer, wine, a gorgeous assortment of pastries and desserts, and substantial breakfast, lunch, and brunch offerings. Keep them in mind as a location for your next private party or event, too. No surprise that with this beautiful setting, weddings are their specialty. For more on their coffees, menus, and events -as well as their second location in downtown Covington -- visit abitaroasting.com or call (985) 246-3330.

St. Tammany Who Dat Headquarters Saints’ season doesn’t officially kick off until September 11 in the Dome against the Minnesota Vikings, but pre-season got underway back on August 10. Are you suited up and ready to party? If you’re not a season ticket holder, and if you don’t want to deal with the mess and hassle of hosting game day get-togethers at your home, you need to stake out your official black and gold headquarters. We’ve put together a list of fun and festive bars and restaurants in West St. Tammany Parish for you to consider.
BEACH HOUSE (MANDEVILLE)
(985) 624-9331; beachhousemandeville.com This super fun Old Mandeville party place typically shows the games (with local coverage, as well as the NFL network for fantasy players) on their multiple televisions and over the sound system, as well as two 70-inch televisions on the big, covered outdoor patio and bar area. Plus, they usually offer wing and nacho specials, and specials on their beer buckets and 32-ounce buckets of rum punch and margaritas, not to mention Saints trivia and prizes. As always, they have a big, playful coastal menu, sandy play area for the kiddos, and it’s located a block away from the lakefront.
BUFFALO WILD WINGS (COVINGTON)
(985) 327-0124; www.buffalowildwings.com A big, flashy sports-lover’s paradise, known as “B-Dubs” to regulars, this popular chain shows the games on dozens of televisions and the sound systems. The menu includes a kids’ section, salads, wraps, burgers, and pretty much any sort of stadium or bar food you can think of, but the main attraction is a wide variety of that staple of any decent game day party: wings. There’s also a full bar, but more importantly, a huge selection of domestic, imported, and craft beers.
THE CHIMES (COVINGTON)
(985) 892-5396; www.thechimes.com Sundays at this big, airy Cajun-Creole restaurant and bar are always popular with the brunch crowds, but the lure of Saints games on the sound system and 24 televisions makes it a certified party. In addition to their lively menu, packed with local favorites like po-boys, oysters, boudin, and fried seafood, this locally based chain also has a full bar and an elaborate beer menu (with many on tap), and rotating beer specials on game days. And don’t forget its coolest feature -- the expansive wooden boardwalk that leads down to a pretty little stretch of the adjacent Bogue Falaya River.

Crabtastic Nutrition If you’ve ever lived in a land-locked location, you know how awful seafood can taste after it’s been frozen and shipped over long distances. That’s one of the many reasons we’re lucky to live in South Louisiana-access to fresh seafood. Not only does it taste great, but it’s a low fat, high protein food source that also provides a lot of health benefits. Here on the banks of Lake Pontchartrain, we’re even luckier to have direct access to that delicious delicacy-- blue crabs. With the St. Tammany Crab Fest happening this month, we thought it was an excellent time to sing their praises. They provide an entire day’s requirement of vitamin B12, which is great Cajun Crab Boil Recipe for your heart, and with their healthy dose of Selenium, (courtesy of Louisiana Cookin’ magazine) they may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, Ingredients thyroid disorders, and cancer. Add crabs, potatoes, corn, and onions. Return mixture to a rolling boil, and cook for 5 minutes. Turn heat off, and cover pot for 15 to 20 minutes. Pour ice into pot. (This helps the crabs absorb the seasonings and prevents them from overcooking.) Let crabs stand in water for at least 1 hour before serving. Crabs can be served warm or completely cooled.

Giving ACCESS to Disabled Children Adapting and changing children’s environment with successful solutions -add it up and you’ve got both the name and mission of ACCESS Louisiana. This organization raises money to provide financial grants to families of children in Southeastern Louisiana and the Gulf South Region with disabilities, including cerebral palsy spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke, and autism. These grants are used to purchase adaptive equipment, assistive devices, special vehicle modifications, and other interventions that are not covered by private insurance or Medicaid. The organization’s annual fundraisers include BooFest, coming up on October 29 at Lakeview Regional Hospital in Covington, and Sweet Soiree in the spring, but they also accept individual donations and sponsorships. If you know a family that could use assistance, or you want to discover ways to contribute the Access Louisiana, visit accesslouisiana.org.

HOO’S Autumn’s Beautiful Bounty Despite our everlasting steamy weather, summer will soon make way for fall. The kids are back in school, the days are getting shorter, and everyone’s front yards and homes will soon be festooned with all those ubiquitous pumpkins, squash, and gourds. Beyond looking festive, does this autumnal produce have any redeeming qualities? Yes, and here are some excellent reasons to upgrade them from the front porch decor to dinner table delight:

Salt and freshly ground black pepper
• Pumpkin seeds pack about 1.7 grams of dietary fiber per ounce
Directions
• Mashed pumpkin has only 50 calories per cup and 3 grams of fiber • Better vision • Lower blood pressure • Better sleep • Heart healthy
GOURDS • Rich in soluble and insoluble dietary fiber • Promotes weight loss • Low in fat and cholesterol content • Great thirst quencher

Cut squash into 1-inch chunks. In large pot melt butter. Add onion and cook until translucent, about 8 minutes. Add squash and stock. Stir and season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Serve.

Hurricane Prep Checklist September is known to be the busiest month of hurricane season. Considering 2017 has been widely predicted to be an especially active year, it’s probably time to think like a boy scout, and be prepared! The Red Cross has made it easy for us with this handy checklist:
BEFORE THE STORM: • Be sure your homeowner’s insurance covers flooding associated with big storms! Talk to a local agent or visit the National Flood Insurance Program at www.FloodSmart.gov. • Talk with members of your household and create an evacuation plan. • Get a NOAA Weather Radio for critical information from the National Weather Service. • Learn about your community’s hurricane response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs, and make plans for your pets to be cared for.
WHEN THE WATCHES AND WARNINGS BEGIN: • Check your disaster supplies and replace or restock as needed. • Bring in anything that can be picked up by the wind (bicycles, lawn furniture). • Close windows, doors and hurricane shutters, or close and board up windows and doors with plywood. • Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible so that food will last longer if the power goes out. • Turn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances. • Fill your car’s gas tank. • Evacuate if advised by authorities. Be careful to avoid flooded roads and washed out bridges.

Cool Under Pressure: Don’t Neglect Your A/C! There are places in the U.S. where air conditioning is not necessarily a priority. Most of those places have relatively short summers, and many experience what you might call a “dry heat.” As you’re well aware, that is not the case in South Louisiana! Our summer often comes early, stays late, and the humidity can mildew a couch in an un-air-conditioned house in no time flat. That’s why it’s important to maintain your cooling system to avoid catastrophic problems. It’s recommended that you have a contractor do annual pre-season check-ups before they enter their busy season. According to Energy Star, a typical maintenance check-up should include: • Check thermostat settings to ensure the cooling and heating system keeps you comfortable when you are home and saves energy while you are away. • Tighten all electrical connections and measure voltage and current on motors. • Lubricate all moving parts. • Check and inspect the condensate drain in your central air conditioner, furnace and/or heat pump (when in cooling mode). • Check controls of the system to ensure proper and safe operation.. But, if the unthinkable happens, and your a/c goes out during our still-toasty late summer/early fall, here are some local repair companies to call with an S.O.S.
