“What’d you think of Super Bowl XLIII?” Carly Weber

“I’m just glad football season is over.”
“Springsteen’s tight pants + disappointing ads = much more enjoyable time watching ‘The Office.’ ”
Carly Weber is an Alaskan transplant who had to learn to navigate by interstates not mountains and has to pretend she’s seeing the ocean by squinting when she crosses the Mississippi River. She gets excited about new foods, $5 bottles of wine, learning new words, reading beautiful phrases, filling in the last crossword puzzle answer and most of all spending time with her family.

“More entertaining (and heart-breaking) than last year. Did that fourth quarter give anyone else a little déjà vu?”
“I would have liked to see Kurt Warner win again, but the Cardinals did put up a good fight.”
Seth Smith is an Iowa City native and graduate of the University of Iowa School of Art & Art History. His idea of a great weekend is one spent with his wife and kids during the day, and reading, playing Xbox or watching TiVo’d boxing after they’ve gone to bed. Enjoying a Sonic burger at some point during said weekend upgrades it from ‘great’ to ‘perfect.’

“The next time the Steelers play in the Super Bowl, I’m buying a defibrillator to keep in the living room.”
Andrea is an avid baker and home chef who also works full time as a graphic designer for a large internet company. She is currently teaching her 10-month-old daughter the fine art of baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

“Oh no, I should have paid more attention. Good job...winner!”
“My quarterback did great. My team lost. Bruce Springsteen rocked.”
Caitlin spends her days as a private practice attorney in Cedar Rapids and her nights in slippers on her porch with a book. In between, she is lucky to have a hilarious husband and daughter to cook for, sing Credence Clearwater Revival with and share her love of all things book-y. She’s come a long way since her childhood, when she tried to sneak books into church and spent weddings under tables reading.

“Super Bowl? In my world, with the exception of professional baseball, sports don’t exist after college.”
“I really wish Kurt Warner’s lastsecond fumble had been reviewed.”
Natalie grew up in Council Bluffs. She attended Iowa State University and obtained her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. She currently practices law at Bradley & Riley, P.C. In her spare time she enjoys reading (of course!), biking, cooking, traveling and spending time with friends.

You know you’re in a fashion rut when your husband gently (because all husbands know that a conversation about their wife’s physical appearance is littered with landmines) points out that perhaps you should infuse some color into your wardrobe.
Excuse me? Black isn’t boring. It’s Audrey
Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” A classic. All true. But black is also safe. Slimming. And takes up a majority of my closet. It’s not that I don’t try to branch out. I envy those who will go out on a fashion limb.
My problem. I just can’t commit. I get cold feet. Last Friday I stood in an aisle at Target holding a pair of teal tights. They would have without doubt sassed up the black dress I was planning to wear. As I hemmed and hawed, I thought to myself, “I would definitely admire someone else if they were wearing the same outfit.” But, I walked out of the store with plain black. At my next stop I tried on dozens of shoes. All black. Of course. But some had a lot more personality than others. What did I end up with? The plain heels I would have expected myself to buy. And sure enough. Later that night, I saw someone wearing a black dress with a pair of fabulous tights. And another with a black dress and wild animal print pumps.

I could have been them. Now you can too. This week we launch a new feature in Hoopla and at HooplaNow.com It’s one I’m personally super excited about. Turn to page 14 and you will be too. It’s called MyStyle. We found guys and gals with a unique sense of style (be it bohemian or Beyonce) and asked them to share it with you. They got all gussied up and our fabulous fashion photographer Cliff Jette took their picture as if they were high fashion models on location. You’ll find our favorite photo along with its description on page 14. We also asked these fashion savvy guys and gals to let us take a tour of their closet. Watch a video of our visit, along with anecdotes they shared about their favorite fashion finds and the rest of the photos from the shoot at HooplaNow.com Through MyStyle they share all their secrets, like where they scrimp, splurge, score their favorite pieces and get inspiration. Maybe you’ll just get inspired yourself. I did. Next time. I’m buying the teal tights. Think you have style? Want to share it? We’d love to hear from you. E-mail me at carly@hooplanow.com

CEDAR RAPIDS — U.S. Cellular customers should
ignore messages purporting to be from “MetaBank,” according to Cedar Rapids police. Local customers are among those receiving the text messages, which provide a toll-free telephone number the recipients should call to prevent security breaches on their bank account. Those who call the number are asked to provide credit card numbers and other personal information. Customers receiving the text message should call U.S. Cellular’s 611 customer service number, passing the information to the company’s fraud investigators.

They’re not so new and no longer kids, but Danny Wood, Joey McIntrye, Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight and Jon Knight are still playing to legions of screaming fans. And you have two chances to relive the ‘80s and see The New Kids on the Block in April. And, yes they will be singing “Hangin’ Tough,” “Step by Step” and “Right Stuff.” Tickets for both concerts went on sale Saturday. The band will play the I Wireless Center in Moline, Ill., on April 2 and the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on April 6. Reserved seats at the I Wireless are $28.50, $48.50 and $65 through the I Wireless Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com and 1-(800) 745-3000. It’s getting cold in here
There’s cold, and then there’s January cold. January is usually the coldest month of the year, so if you’re below normal, you know it’s REALLY cold. And we all know this past January was just that. Statewide, January’s 13.8-degree average daily temperature through Jan. 28 was 4 degrees below normal, making it the coldest January since 1994 and the coldest month since December 2000. It was the 33rdcoldest January in the 136 years records have been kept. And Eastern Iowa was the coldest, snowiest section of the state for the past month — no news to residents of both Iowa City and Cedar Rapids
Flood money
DES MOINES — Gov. Chet Culver signed a $56 million
flood and disaster recovery package this week for individual needs, housing assistance and grants to cities and counties climbing back from floods and natural disasters last year. This week, Culver also signed a package that will allow cities and counties to speed up the process of gaining approval for a 1 percent local-option sales tax to help pay for flood recovery efforts if they don’t already have a local option tax in place. Cedar Rapids city leaders have discussed putting the measure before voters in March. SOURCE: THE GAZETTE

Bret Michaels of Poison Friday, Feb. 6 @ 8 p.m. Bret Michaels is best known as the star of VH1’s “Rock of Love” dating shows. What’s that? Oh, right. Michaels also is the lead singer from ’80s hair-metal masters Poison. These days, though, chances are more young people know Michaels as a reality TV star than a musician. But in concert, when Michaels isn’t surrounded by a gaggle of trampy women trying to win his love, he still can rock hard enough to flatten a row of piledhigh perms. Poison songs like “Nothin’ But a Good Time” and “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” are hair-metal classics, and Michaels also can pull songs from his new “Rock My World” solo album. Bret Michaels of Poison

Of all of the popular alternative-rock bands of the ’90s, who would have thought Cracker would be one of the few still going strong in the ’00s? Somehow, these rootsy rockers have been able to turn a string of hits — “Low,” “Get Off This,” “Eurotrash Girl” and “Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)” — into a long-lasting career.
This week’s 3 Things is like the slogan for an adult-contemporary radio station: “’80s, ’90s and today!” Filling the “today” slot is Titus Andronicus, a lo-fi punk band from New Jersey that indie-rock kingpin PitchforkMedia.com has helped introduce to the bearded masses. Don’t get me started on Pitchfork. Don’t.
Actually, maybe Cracker’s longevity isn’t so strange. After all, just about anyone who paid close attention to that era of alt-rock probably has fond memories of all four of those songs. Plus, frontman David Lowery wrote the decade-defining lyric of “What the world needs now, is another folk singer, like I need a hole in my head.”
Anyway, Titus Andronicus seems worthy of the attention, as long as you can get past the fuzzy and scuzzy production of the band’s debut album, last year’s “The Airing of Grievances.” Singer Patrick Stickles’ tortured yowl is reminiscent of Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst, and the rest of the band cheerfully bashes its instruments like it was playing with pots and pans.

Tell us about Prairie Soup Company, one of the newest dowtown restaurants.
Prairie Soup Company was created by Ryan and Katie Buresh. They wanted to offer handcrafted foods served in a “quick-service” setting (I refrain from ever letting the words “fast food” to describe us). They also wanted to incorporate low-fat and vegetarian options. Although all of our pastries, sandwiches and salads are high quality, the soup is the star of the show. The secret of our soon-to-be famous soups is in the stock/broth. We put a lot of time and energy into our stocks to ensure the freshest, most flavorful and natural product we can.
I love the space. Very inviting and open!
Ryan and Katie wanted to create a cafe-style ambience with a “prairie” theme. It’s comfortable and casual to accommodate both the relaxed and on-the-go diners.
As head chef, do you get to plan the menus? What’s your favorite dish?

I’ve assisted Ryan and Katie by adapting their personal favorite and family recipes for a restaurant. Combining slow-food and fast service is a challengethat I feel we’ve been able to accomplish. I’ve also beenintroducing my own style into the menu by creating daily specials and continuing menu/product development. As far as my favorite dish goes, I can’t choose just one. I love them all! Heavyweights
Pizza Round 2:
Tomaso’s vs. Zoey’s
Zoey’s Puts Up a Good Fight Picking up where we left off, I finally managed to get a seat at Zoey’s and believe me, it was no small feat. Regardless, the battle lines were drawn and it wouldn’t be much of a fight if one contender never showed. Zoey’s has a different flair than Tomaso’s. The interior has more character, art hangs on the walls, Italian music plays in the background and the one television was tuned into an old movie on TMC. Zoey’s wins points on ambiance but what about the pizza? Yeah, it’s really good pizza. The Chicago Style is authentic. Deep dish crust in a banged up old pan that has been seasoned well through the years. A big difference is the sauce. Tomaso’s has a lighter sauce that’s added after the pizza comes out of the oven. Here the sauce is baked in and that lends more flavor. However, I still prefer the chewy, cheesy crust of Tomaso’s Detroit. I’m not a huge pizza crust fan so having that extra layer of cheese makes a big difference to me. Speaking of cheese, Zoey’s definitely piles it on for their garlic cheese bread. It’s an overflowing mass that drowns out the requisite bread part and pools into a golden crust on the pan. The debate rages on. Can I declare a victor? Tomaso’s has lots going for it but it’s hard to beat the authentic flavor and eclectic atmosphere of Zoey’s. Is it a cheap shot if
I call it a tie?

YOU SHOULD MEET
Rob Merritt, 32, Cedar Rapids
Community Relations director @ Theatre Cedar Rapids
What he can do for you: Want to see TCR get back into the Iowa Theatre? Rob can help you help them.
did you know: despite all his artistic and theatre goals, if given the chance Rob would leave everything behind to drive open-wheeled racecars for a living. He’s that big of an IndyCar and Formula 1 racing fan. Instead he’ll have to make do with his red 1988 pontiac Fiero named Angelina, which he drives “because they’re just cool cars,” and because “I’m a child of the ‘80s. I love what (the Fiero) represents.” JONATHAN d. WOOdS pHOTO

book he co-authored with a Columbine-shooting survivor about that experience.
Though. Be sure that no raindrops on roses, kitten’s whiskers or bright copper kettles rank on Rob’s list.
Right now, though, many of those interests have taken a back seat to his job as community relations director at Theatre Cedar Rapids since the organization lost their home at the Iowa Theatre in the Floods of 2008.
Instead, he dabbles in, oh, about a million other things. “I will never understand people who say, ‘I’m bored,’” he says. “I never have enough time to do everything I want to do.” “I would love to have time to work on my jumpshot. I have book shelves full of books I want to read. There are TV shows I own that I haven’t had time to watch. I’m interested in so many things.” Recently added to the list is photography and computer animation. Long time list-makers are playing the guitar and piano. Rob is also an author. One is a self-published comic, called “Mad Reindeer.” The other is a
“I can think of few things right now that I want more than bringing the Iowa building back,” Rob says. His passion for the building and TCR dates back to his years at Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School when his love for theatre was incubated on the very stage that sat under several feet of water for those few fated June days. On his college graduation day, though, armed with majors in both journalism and theatre from the University of Iowa, he chose newspapers instead of the stage. That choice took him to Marshalltown, where he worked at the daily paper, until he randomly (his word, not ours) moved to New
York City. Not for theatre as one might think, but because he fell in love with the city and felt like he just had to experience life there. Fittingly it was both journalism and theatre that pulled him back to Iowa. “There were very few things that would have made me leave the city,” he says. Turned out a job opening as the Arts and Entertainment editor at The Gazette was one of those things. But while he loved reporting on the local art scene.He couldn’t participate in it. And that kind of stunk. “I wanted to be the guy on the stage, not the guy writing about it,” he says. “The irony is that this job keeps me so busy that I don’t have a lot of time to be on stage.” Still his a job marries his two passions, Rob says. He gets to write. About theatre. How great is that? -CARLY WEBER CARLY WEBER IS THE EdITOR OF HOOpLA. SHE MOVEd TO CEdAR RApIdS FROM ALASkA ANd BACk AGAIN. BOOKTALK {
Let’s talk about … Books Baby! Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the cliff notes. What are they reading right now and which books can’t they wait to crack open.
GAZETTE PHOTOS
Book lovers love Prairie Lights . This downtown Iowa City bookstore is more than just a store. It’s an information source, a meet-up spot and event venue. Start at the front for the NYT Bestsellers, and weave your way past the newly released hardcovers and paperbacks. Dig through popular movie scripts and keep walking to find the mysteries. In the back corner, hunker down with the poetry, or cross the store and check out the philosophy section. Nature and science lovers will find plenty of interest on the second floor, and everyone will want to grab a cup of coffee from the Java House café there. Those with a fondness for children’s books and YA fiction will want to block off time to spend in the overflowing basement section. Maurice Sendak! Beverly Cleary! Judy Blume! I hear independent bookselling is a tough gig, but Prairie Lights has figured it out. Even the name of the store makes you want to read, doesn’t it? Prairie Lights: use ‘em to read late into these dark, cold, winter nights. Or, on a cold weeknight, make the trip out and hear a reading from a favorite author. “Live From Prairie Lights” hosts two or three authors each week who come and read from their recent books and answer audience questions about their writing. Usually held from 7pm-9pm, the readings used to be broadcast on Iowa Public Radio. But they stopped airing in December. That

means. If you want to hear the reading, make the trek to Iowa City. You’ll be glad you did. Even their website www.prairielights.com is great (They’re also at www.prairielightsbooks. com). I loved browsing Staff Selections, Jan and Paul Recommend and A Personal Selection. The Personal Selections right now are President Barack Obama’s favorite books. I didn’t see any of the fluff I was hoping for, but I suppose his list suits a president: “Moby Dick,” the Bible, “Song of Solomon” by Toni Morrison. The store also displayed the President’s picks so you can read your way to the presidency. Feeling all warm and fuzzy toward my fellow Midwesterners, I picked up the “Florist’s Daughter,” by Patricia Hampl, on a recent trip to PL. This memoirist has a Czech father and grew up in St. Paul. I’ve been suspicious of memoirs since recent years’ snafus, but I’m going to give this one a try. I also put in an order for Hyperion, by Dan Simmons. I’m just beginning his “Terror” and am fairly certain he’s a genius. Tell us what bookstores you love and what you’ve gotten there!
a constant juggling act, but the one thing I don’t worry about
is Birth Control! I use long-acting reversible birth control! It’s worry free and easy and available at Planned Parenthood. Call (319) 363-8572 today to find out if you qualify for an IUD or Implanon™ at no cost!

When it comes to local live music, most people don’t realize that Cedar Rapids has such an incredible wealth of talent. We went dow to Mulligan’s recently, and caught one of our favorite acoustic rock duos, Sun Dogs.
Purchase tickets by 2/10/09 for travel through 3/11/09 to/from Florida OR Puerto Rico; travel through 5/20/09 for all other destinations.
These guys are crowd-pleasers. Brian’s strength is his vocal. He can cover a wide range of styles, from soaring ballads to growling rock songs. And you’re surprised to hear such a talented singer play such a mean guitar. Billy, a good singer himself, is an even better guitarist. He pounds that acoustic guitar, he caresses it and he coaxes some amazing sounds out of it. The evening at Mulligan’s, we enjoyed music from such diverse artists as The Eagles, Tonic, Train, Dishwalla, Johnny Cash, Hootie & the Blowfish, Foo Fighters and Louis Armstrong.

Two guys, both playing acoustic 6-string guitars, both excellent singers. Billy Peifer and Brian Kurt have been playing together so long, that they make it appear effortless. Great song selection, great harmonies and they’re fun to watch.
Every time I hear these guys, I can’t help but imagine visitors from Chicago, or New York or Los Angeles wanting to go out and hear some live music. But good grief, they’re in Iowa. So you take them out to hear the Sun Dogs. They will be blown away and they will go back home impressed.
