Seth Smith
“House’s Hugh Laurie. He’s got my cure.”
■■
Seth Smith is an Iowa City native and graduate of the University of Iowa School of Art & Art History. His idea of a great weekend is one spent with his wife and kids during the day, and reading, playing Xbox or watching TiVo’d boxing after they’ve gone to bed.

“Toss up between Vin Diesel & Ryan Reynolds.” Victoria Fish is an Iowa girl through and through. She has been with the Gazette since earning her degree in Commercial Art in ‘96. In her free time she enjoys cheering on the Hawkeyes and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoys scrapbooking, but wishes she had more time for it.
Andrea is an avid baker and home chef who also works full time as a graphic designer for a large internet company. She is currently teaching her 10-month-old daughter the fine art of baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie.
Caitlin Slessor

“What man wouldn’t want to unwind uptight Angela from ‘The Office?’”
Carly Weber is an Alaskan transplant who had to learn to navigate by interstates not mountains and has to pretend she’s seeing the ocean by squinting when she crosses the Mississippi River. She gets excited about new foods, $5 bottles of wine, learning new words, reading beautiful phrases, filling in the last crossword puzzle answer and most of all spending time with her family.

Book Talk
“My secret crush is Jon Hamm.”
“Ed Harris. I love a guy with no hair.”
Caitlin spends her days as a private practice attorney in Cedar Rapids and her nights in slippers on her porch with a book. In between, she is lucky to have a hilarious husband and daughter to cook for, sing Credence Clearwater Revival with and share her love of all things book-y. She’s come a long way since her childhood, when she tried to sneak books into church and spent weddings under tables reading.
Natalie grew up in Council Bluffs. She attended Iowa State University and obtained her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. She currently practices law at Bradley & Riley, P.C. In her spare time she enjoys reading (of course!), biking, cooking, traveling and spending time with friends.

“You never forget your first: Dean Cain a.k.a. Superman.”

I’m just
SAYIN’ {
Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else she wants.
Ten years ago when I moved to Cedar Rapids a friend and I hopped in her car to check out downtown. Our little adventure took all of 10 minutes. We parked on one of the bridges, walked a couple block radius and quickly discovered that there wasn’t much there for a couple of 20-yearolds.
What a difference a decade makes.
Between then and last summer, Cedar Rapids’ downtown had transformed from an afterthought to a destination. Dining and nightlife options abounded.
Then the floods came. I had to drive to Subway or Wendy’s to get a bite to eat. I missed getting my skinny vanilla latte during Coffee Emporium’s Power Hour and whole grain bagels with veggie cream cheese from Brueggers. One weekend in July my husband suggested grabbing a drink at Crosby’s. A good idea until we both remembered that wasn’t an option any more. A realization that made us particularly sad since that was where we had our first date, got engaged and had our rehearsal dinner. Suffice it to say. We missed downtown. And we weren’t the only ones who wondered if it would ever be the same again. Business owners were often quoted questioning whether it made business sense to rebuild downtown.
Would customers return?

Anyone still wondering should go downtown this Saturday night. You’ll be able to see for yourself that downtown is already well on its way to thriving again. Last weekend I was at the Piano Lounge Saturday with the rest of the Hoopla Crew for the Access Iowa and Z 102.9 +1 Party. It was the first time I’d been there since they reopened. If you haven’t yet been there, go. It’s fabulous. A true
example of back and better than ever.
The crowd was proof that I’m not the only one who thinks so. Sitting there, looking around, it was hard to believe that a mere eight months ago, the bar was quite literally underwater. It is in a basement after all. Outside too. It was a familiar feeling. People swarmed in the streets between Karma, Volume, Bricks and the Piano Lounge.
Just like old times. I know there’s more work to be done. But the strides made so far make me confident we’re on the right track.
And last weekend, it was good to be back.
I’m just sayin’,

This decision was part of their unanimous approval of a master rebuilding plan for flood-damaged city buildings and facilities, some of which will be completed by the end of this year and others by 2010. FEMA will pay for 90 percent of the cost, the state the other 10 percent.

Croissant Du Jour

Chock full of trinkets, baubles, hats and jewelry, the Silver Spider in Mount Vernon (There’s also one in Iowa City) is a glorious treasure-trove of everything from watches to stationary, head scarves to hand bags. The jewelry is unique, trendy, and eye-catching, and if you are lucky enough to stop in during a sale you could nab a fun pair of earrings for a dollar.
Always my favorite spot on campus as a student, this little haven remains a favorite of mine. Complete with a quiet lagoon, beautiful flowers, stone archway and mosaic bridge, the grotto provides a safe nest for anyone wishing to absorb a few moments of serenity. The atmosphere is perfect for reflection, and the benches are deep enough to sink into for a long conversation or an hour of reading.
After biking here once, you’ll find it hard to go back to the city. Hugging the Indian Creek and Cedar River, the trail’s gravel path makes a wonderful crunching noise under your bike tires and the trees create a sheltered canopy. Factor in the chance of catching a glimpse of a baby fawn or a horseback rider and you have the makings for a perfectly nostalgic summer day.
Maybe it’s the perfectlyprepared pastries, the delicious coffee, the custard éclairs or the authentic French accent you’ll hear when you first walk in, but something about this little café reminds me of Europe. The dining space is decorated with adorable artwork and the food is always perfect. Get there early for lunch, because this place is popular.
For those of you who always wanted to visit a historic battlefield but never have the time, seeing this boulder is the next best thing. Located in the Lisbon Cemetery, the boulder came from the famous Civil War battlefield in Gettysburg, Pa. How it wound up in Eastern Iowa, I’m not quite sure, but at least now I can say I have literally touched a piece of history.

Jeff Dunham
Friday, February 13 @ 8 p.m.
Jeff Dunham has guts. How else could you explain Achmed the Dead Terrorist? Achmed, that cute little skeletal fella in the photo, is the latest member of ventriloquist Dunham’s puppet posse, which includes sidekick Peanut, curmudgeon Walter, redneck Bubba J and jalapeno-on-a-stick Jose. Like I said, guts. Through his puppets, Dunham’s found a way to joke about racial stereotypes while still coming across as a nice guy. Ingenious. Fans have been eating it up, with Dunham recently graduating from theaters to arenas. If Dunham isn’t on comedy’s A-list yet, he’s pretty close. eric clark shunned music until he was 12 and has been obsessed with it ever since. he’s been the arts and entertainment reporter at the gazette since 2004.

Tuesday, February 17 @ 8 p.m. Buckwheat Zydeco’s accordion-fueled party music has been bringing people together for 30 years. In celebration of hitting the three-decade mark, Buckwheat and his crew are hitting the road for a victorty-lap tour celebrating their long run of bringing zydeco music to the masses.

But that’s not all. Also on the bill are Al and Aleta Murphy, Joe and Coleen Peterson, Bob and Kristie Black with Banjoy and The Great Bluegrass Herons. There’s also a three-course meal. Good luck choosing between the chocolate fondue and the cherry puff pastry for dessert.
What exactly has Buckwheat Zydeco accomplished in 30 years? Well, it was the first zydeco group to do all of the following: Sign to a major record label, perform on a national TV show, release a children’s album, launch a record label and win an Emmy Award. Maybe Buckwheat Zydeco’s next album should be called “Trailblazers.”

YOU SHOULD MEET
Shannon and Eric Hanson, Cedar Rapids
Shannon, 38, Director of Marketing and Member Development @ YMCA of Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Area Eric, 35, Communications Director @ Iowa City Area Development
What they can do for you:
Both are pretty darn passionate about Cedar Rapids and the nonprofit organizations they work
for. Want to know more? Just say so.
Did you know:
The women of Shannon’s sorority Alpha Xi Delta had an ongoing competition to see who would receive the most roses each year. So Eric had 75 roses delivered to Shannon during her senior year. They’re pretty sure the record still holds.
On their first date, Eric and Shannon Hanson spent hours trying to find something they disagreed on and came up empty-handed. Sixteen years later, “that’s not an issue,” says Shannon, erupting into one of her signature full-body laughs. True. That blush of first love may have faded. But they really do have a lot in common. Like laughter. And friendship. Neither of which should be dismissed lightly, they say. “We’re both big believers in that you’ve got to be best friends before you get married,” says Eric. That’s not their only secret. Whoever cooks, the other cleans. Eric does

“There are ways to keep marriages going,” says Shannon, again laughing. “For us it’s Paula (the housekeeper) and him doing the laundry.” It doesn’t hurt that they both like football either. Fitting since it was the game, in a roundabout kind of way, that brought them together. Eric and Shannon both marched in the University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band. She played the clarinet. He the saxophone. When they first met, she didn’t know his name. He was just “the little guy who marched next to me.”
He was pretty sure her name was Shannon. Or maybe Sharon. But he was smitten. So when she dropped a few loaded hints aimed at her then boyfriend, it wasn’t him but who Eric took the bait and left a dozen roses on her seat during a home game. When he asked for her number, “She literally said ‘My phone number is in the book,’ and I thought, ‘Well, I’ll never call you then,’ ” says Eric. “But I really meant, my phone number is in the book, call me,” says Shannon. Later that fall, when they crossed paths again, she gave him a hard time for not calling her and “somehow we went from that to dating,” he says. “Then it literally just snowballed.”
They were engaged three years later and on April 12, 1996, they were married in a “teeny tiny ceremony” followed by a “blowout reception.” They lived in Cedar Rapids for seven years in their 20s, but it took leaving and returning again a few years ago before they took advantage of all the city has to offer. These days they’re definitely making up for lost time. Eric is the vice president of Access Iowa, Cedar Rapids’ young professional’s organization. And Shannon is on the board as a social co-chair. “I wish we would have been this engaged then,” says Eric. Shannon nods. See. They really do agree on everything. -CARLY WEBER

Quality Care Nurse Ben Halperin, 38, Oxford Chef/owner @ Augusta Restaurant
Wound care, fall prevention, restorative nursing. 3-5 years experience. Long-term care experience.
How long have you been a chef?
I’ve worked in restaurants most of my life. I started getting more serious about it about six years ago, when I was living in New Orleans. I learned on the job.
How would you describe your culinary style?
My style is mostly French. I do use a fare bit of New Orleans ingredients and style, which involves specific ingredients and techniques, like using a roux (pronounced RUE, a mixture of butter and flour used to thicken sauces and stews), and what they call the trinity: onion, celery and green peppers. The technique is definitely French, that’s where it really comes from. Then there’s also Creole cooking, which has African roots.
Do you offer both styles of New Orleans cuisine?
I make a Creole-style gumbo – gumbo is a word for okra, using it is what makes it African-style, or Creole-style. I do some (Cajun) specialties like crab cakes and crawfish beignets. I also do down-home comfort food like steaks, fried chicken and fried catfish.
What is the most popular dish on your menu?
That’s hard to say. We sell a lot of steaks. We have a wood-fired grill with hickory and cherry wood, and just about everything that we cook in there is popular. We have a fairly small menu, so everything moves pretty well. And then I usually run specials, too.
What can people expect to see as specials?

We like to put a crab crust on fish, like halibut. Anytime I can, I like to bring in fresh fish. We’ll bring in fresh oysters too, occasionally. Those go really well.
On your Web page, you say your mission is to serve freshly prepared food from as many local resources as possible – why is that important to you? It just makes the most sense. The local product is going to be freshest, and it doesn’t make sense to ship food all over the place with fuel prices so high. Of course, in the middle of the winter, it’s difficult to get any (local) produce, but in the spring and summer, I buy locally from some people in Homestead, and I’ll also get produce from people with private gardens. I’ll show up to work and there will be a bag of tomatoes on my door knob.
Do have anything special planned for Mardi Gras?
I think we’re going to get out some of the New Orleans favorites – some jambalaya and red beans and rice.

Leggo that Eggo Fran & Cherie’s Skillet Ca fé & Bakery Brings Back Breakfast Poor breakfast. Relegated to a hastily poured bowl of Fruit Loops or a burnt Pop Tart. Even the Tremendous Twelve at Perkins is underappreciated as it’s poked and prodded at 3 a.m. by barely conscious bar hoppers. I say, “Celebrate breakfast in all its glory!” Fran & Cherie’s Skillet Bakery & Café is the perfect place to do just that. Located on the main drag in Mt. Vernon this comfortable café has a very uptown feel. It reminded me of great locally-owned eateries in Minneapolis or Chicago. The interior is fresh and airy with bright colors on the walls. The kitchen is right out in the open for everyone to enjoy. No more wondering just what is going on with your omelet behind closed doors. At Skillet Café you can keep a watchful eye on those eggs. The food is well done and full of flavor. Omelets are made to order with as many ingredients as your heart desires. I filled mine with bacon, sausage, green peppers, tomatoes and the obligatory cheddar cheese. It was piled high and bursting at the seams with giant chunks of meat and fresh veggies. No tiny dicing here. On the side were home fries and toast. A complete and wholly satisfying meal for just $5.95. It’s hard to beat that. And don’t forget one of the freshly baked cinnamon rolls. It was gooey and warm and dripping with frosting. Drop that box of Golden Grahams! Skillet Café & Bakery deserves your full breakfast attention.

Ahhh, Half Price Books . In a world of $26 books, Half Price Books is like a breath of fresh air because — as the name suggests — all of the books are half off the cover price. Half Price Books has an excellent (and ever changing) selection of books, plus used CD’s and DVD’s. Do not miss the clearance section where you can get cheap books, even cheaper. I totally recommend visiting Half Price Books if you are in the market for a good read but not really sure what you want or if you are taking a trip. They have a great selection of travel books. Sure, some of them are a couple years old. But really, how much has Washington, D.C. really changed since 2005? I would not recommend Half Price Books if you are looking for a particularly popular new release; it is kind of hit-or-miss in the new release department. When your inventory is composed of used books, that’s to be expected. Plus, not only can you buy used books, you can also return your old books for cash. They’ll tally up your books while you peruse the stacks and inevitably pick out more books that you just have to have. While I like the concept, it is a little disconcerting when I drop off 20 really good (in my opinion) books and receive about $4 in return. Given that I can’t walk out of the store with less
than two books in hand, I end up losing money each time I drop off books. But hey, it makes me feel better knowing that the books I drop off may grace another reader’s book shelves one day and hopefully bring some joy into his or her life.
by John Irving. I am currently reading this book and must say it is an interesting read! It is about a little boy and his tattoo artist mom who go in search of the little boy’s tattoo addicted, organ playing father. Yeah…definitely interesting.

With roots all over the area, including Marion, Waterloo, Waverly and Cedar Rapids, Smokin’ Guns’ original lineup was born in the late 1980’s. After a hiatus of more than a decade, three of the original members reunited. They found a new drummer and bassist, but “it wasn’t until after Thanksgiving (2008) that we started practicing every week,” says the band. That led to a New Year’s Eve booking and “the stage was set for the return of the “Smokin’ Guns,” they say. Focusing essentially on country, Smokin’ Guns has a few surprises up its’ sleeve, mixing in random rock like Poison’s “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” or metal in the case of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” The lead singing duties are shared, with most of the rock tunes sung by drummer Darren and the country left to the cowboy-hat-wearing Derrick. Inexplicably, while having a drummer who sings, they do not yet play any tunes by the Eagles or Genesis. So much for clichés. “We believe that the reason we are so different from other groups is that we all have a variety of tastes and styles in music. Our inspirations range from Dierks Bentley and Joe Diffie to Buddy Holly and The Eagles,” says Derrick. “We are excited to get our name back out there, make great music and have fun.” The members’ connection and friendship of more than 15 years is obvious in the tightness of their playing as is the enjoyment of the material. If country is your thing, it will be hard to avoid getting up to dance. If it isn’t, you will still find it difficult to keep your toes from tapping.

COE COLLEGE
The Sound: Country with a little hard rock and metal The Gigs: Feb. 14 @ Joker’s Iron Legend Saloon, Traer; March 6 @ Cedar River Landing, Cedar Rapids If you are a new bar in Iowa featuring live music, a good choice for opening night might be a band that covers both country and classic rock. That is exactly what Cedar River Landing did when they had Smokin’ Guns play for their grand opening last month.
