Carly Weber

■ ■

Editor

Carly Weber is an Alaskan transplant who had to learn to navigate by interstates not mountains and has to pretend she’s seeing the ocean by squinting when she crosses the Mississippi River. She gets excited about new foods, $5 bottles of wine, learning new words, reading beautiful phrases, filling in the last crossword puzzle answer and most of all spending time with her family. She needs to know who to talk to about getting a few more hours added to each day.

Seth Smith

■ ■

Design

Seth Smith is an Iowa City native and graduate of the University of Iowa School of Art & Art History. His idea of a great weekend is one spent with his wife and kids during the day, and reading, playing Xbox or watching TiVo’d boxing after they’ve gone to bed. Enjoying a Sonic burger at some point during said weekend upgrades it from ‘great’ to ‘perfect.’

Andrea Dietzenbach

■ ■

Clean Plate

Andrea is an avid baker and home chef who also works full time as a graphic designer for a large internet company. She is currently teaching her 10-month-old daughter the fine art of baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie.

Caitlin Slessor

■ ■

Book Talk

Caitlin spends her days as a private practice attorney in Cedar Rapids and her nights in slippers on her porch with a book. In between, she is lucky to have a hilarious husband and daughter to cook for, sing Credence Clearwater Revival with and share her love of all things book-y. She’s come a long way since her childhood, when she tried to sneak books into church and spent weddings under tables reading.

Natalie Ditmars

■ ■

Book Talk

Natalie grew up in Council Bluffs. She attended Iowa State University and obtained her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. She currently practices law at Bradley & Riley, P.C. In her spare time she enjoys reading (of course!), biking, cooking, traveling and spending time with friends.

I’m just

SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what we’re all about and how you can help us rock it.

I’m not originally from here. In fact, I’m the exact opposite of the brain drain. I came here for college eight years ago and stayed. Wondering why? You’re not alone. For nearly a decade I’ve been fielding the same question, “Why Iowa?”

In these pages, you’ll be able to find out what’s going on in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and everywhere in between. We’ll have food and book columns, Q&As with bartenders and chefs and profiles on the area’s movers and shakers. Hoopla is a forum for 20- and 30-somethings to share their passion for the area, to infuse their enthusiasm for everything it has to offer.

My answer is sort of touchy feely. Brace yourself. I love this town, this region, this state. Seriously. I love that people are truly as friendly as the stereotype. I love that there really is something for everybody here. That opportunities are as endless as the cornfields. I’m not kidding. I’ve always been kind of mystified by people, you know who you are, who are constantly whining about how Iowa is so dull.

There’s plenty to do. Take one of my family’s recent weekends for example. Friday night I went to a home show by an incredibly talented artist craftswoman named Kate Ford. Then I met friends for margaritas at Reynaldo’s. Saturday we went to Cedar Rapids last downtown farmer’s market. That afternoon we went to Ely’s first Fall Fest. We would have gone to the Amana Colonies for their annual Oktoberfest but we went to a marching band competition instead. See. There’s tons to do. Problem is I found out about some of those events through word of mouth, because there’s no single go-to guide highlighting all the festivals, live music events, fabulous restaurants and amazing people that make up this community. Until now. That’s why I’m so excited about Hoopla. Hoopla is all of those things and more. Hoopla is a weekly entertainment magazine written for and by young adults about everything from nightlife to networking.

Did you catch that? Hoopla is yours. You own this. Make it something you and your friends can’t wait to pick up every Thursday. How do you do that? The answer is simple. Engage. Submit story ideas. Heck, submit stories. Hoopla isn’t about professional journalists telling you what’s cool. Who says we’re the ultimate barometer of cool? Ask my friends. I’m certainly not. But you are. Or you know what is. So tell us what rocks, where the coolest place to eat is, who makes the meanest martini. Not sure where to start? Go online to www.HooplaNow.com You can also find us on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. If nothing else, head to HooplaNow.com and click the link to fill out our survey. Tell us what you think and you can sign up to win one of three $50 iTunes gift cards. Think Hoopla sucks? Back it up. Tell us why. Think we’re perfect? Hardly likely. But do tell us what you love. Then tell your friends to do the same. This issue is just the beginning. We wanted to whet your appetite and get your feedback. We’ll be back weekly in December. By then HooplaNow.com will also be a more complete online resource with a calendar of events, restaurant guide, user reviews and more. But in the meantime, use HooplaNow.com to share your thoughts on everything entertainment and pop culture, like whether the New Kids on the Block reunion is really “The Right Stuff.” Or what’s with everyone wearing head bands again? What’s next scrunchies? I’m just sayin’,

{ one } Jerry Seinfeld Friday, Oct. 17 @ 7 p.m. Jerry Seinfeld’s lame Microsoft commercials with Bill Gates have been met with a resounding “meh,” but they’re just about the only thing the gymshoe-clad comedian has done wrong in his stellar career. Ten years after “Seinfeld” left the air, Seinfeld still reigns as stand-up’s king, with only Bill Cosby carrying as much clout. Pretty nice, then, that Seinfeld isn’t shy about touring, making his third stop in Eastern Iowa in the last four years. Norm MacDonald Tuesday, Oct. 21 @ 8 p.m.

Night of the Living Derby Saturday, Oct. 25 @ 7 p.m.

Before Amy Poehler, Tina Fey or Jimmy Fallon manned the “Weekend Update” anchor desk on “Saturday Night Live,” Norm MacDonald was the man in command, serving up wry commentary on the world’s inanities in his trademark sneering mumble.

The Cedar Rapids Rollergirls have yet to rough up their first opponent on their own turf, but they’re already off to a great start with their pink-skull logo, which seems to say something like “We will charm you, and then we will kill you.”

MacDonald hasn’t done much since (unless you count his short-lived sitcom, which I don’t), so it’s good to see him hitting up comedy clubs. MacDonald always been funny as hell; he might just be due for a comeback.

Who knows how a female roller-derby team will fare in Cedar Rapids. One thing’s for sure, though: The Rollergirls have the market cornered on quirkiness.

CEDAR RAPIDS – Penguins Comedy Club will

Penguins temporarily moved to the Clarion, 525 33rd Ave. SW, shortly after the June flood destroyed the club’s former location at 209 First Ave. SE. Once renovations are complete, Penguins will occupy the hotel’s Tivoli Garden room.

• A reduced fee for monthly parkers from November 1 to June 30, 2010. • Increased fees to 90 cents an hour at on-street meters downtown. Meters in parking ramps will cost 60 cents an hour.

Start the day off with comfort food at the Hamburg Inn. I always go for eggs over easy and hashbrowns for a good base. The atmosphere encapsulates Iowa City’s crosssection of blue collar and academia.

Hamburg Inn 214 N. Linn St., Iowa City

Then it’s off to Sugar Bottom Recreation Area for 18 holes of Frisbee golf. Make sure to bring your drink of choice! Anything in a can will do. The rolling fairways offer challenges while giving you a great excuse to commiserate with your friends.

BEHINDthebar Dan “D-Train” Tranel, 36, Marion Bartender @ Element *

AFTER YEARS BEHIND THE BAR IN CEDAR RAPIDS, D-TRAIN PROBABLY KNOWS ALL YOUR SECRETS. FIND OUT HIS. – Q U I N N P E T T I F E R

Know a bartender we should meet? E-mail hoopla@hooplanow.com

What got you started in the bar biz? My father owned a bar and I started working for him stocking coolers and changing kegs of beer.

So it’s in your blood. Did Dad pass along any words of wisdom? He taught me the importance of taking care of people; they will in turn take care of you. It’s a good opportunity to make friends for life.

A smart pop. So with all this experience under your belt, what’s your favorite part of doing what you do? I enjoy the opportunity to meet people from all different walks of life. Everyone has a story to tell. It’s interesting to meet people at their “best” and not so best.

Not so best, eh? Do you ever find yourself playing counselor? Every once in a while you have to. I get customers that come up to me and ask for advice all the time. Mostly on relationships and what he or she should do in a certain situation.

Rumor has it you have quite a group of loyal clientele. People love to visit their beloved D-Train. What’s your secret? Customer Service. For example, I try to remember what people are drinking so the next time they come to get a drink, I have it ready and waiting for them. Not only does it make you stand out, it doesn’t hurt when it comes to tip time!

What’s one of your favorite bartending memories. One time I was tending bar at a golf resort in Galena, Ill., and about 15 Chicago Bears players with coaches came in. They were enjoying one last night out before the start of training camp. They were all very nice and polite, and it was really cool to meet them in person.

The Train Wreck Mix equal parts: Vodka Gin Rum Triple Sec Sour Mix Orange juice Finish with a splash of grenadine *Editor’s Note: As of press time, Element had recently closed. D-Train is lining up his next gig.

One thing people might be surprised to know about you is…? Probably the fact that during the day I play Mr. Mom. I’m almost always at home taking care of my three boys.

AMY WYSS DIDN’T LET THE FLOOD SINK HER LOVE FOR COOKING AND NOW Z I NS E X E C U TI V E C H E F I S P OI S E D TO GE T BA CK TO W ORK. – Q U I N N P E T T I F E R

Amy Wyss, 39, Cedar Rapids Executive chef @ Zins Restaurant

Know a chef we should meet? E-mail hoopla@hooplanow.com

What sparked your interest in the culinary world? I was a nanny in New York, then moved to Chicago and I just wanted to meet people so I decided to take a cooking class. I looked up culinary schools in the phone book applied to Kendall College in Evanston. I didn’t realize it was one of the best schools in the country. Once I started I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

So you’re one of those “natural talent” people. The microwave cook is jealous. Have you always wanted to be a chef? I have always liked to cook. I baked with my grandma, and my stepdad was a great cook and taught me. I’ve always liked to cook, but had never considered doing it professionally until I started school.

What sparked your interest in owning your own restaurant? I had been teaching culinary arts at Kirkwood where I met Lee Belfield, my business partner. I was ready to quit teaching but there was no place I wanted to work locally. I was thinking about moving to Georgia where I have family, but Lee (co-owner of Zins) decided he didn’t want to train someone new so he threw out the idea of opening a restaurant. I thought it sounded like a good idea and held him to it.

The “small-plates” style of dining at Zins was a cutting edge concept in our community. Why’d you go that route? Lee and I did a lot of industry and local market research, and we felt that the small-plate-concept would be perfect for the Cedar Rapids market. It allows people to take a less expensive chance at creativity and trying things they may not have had before. We think the small-plate-concept lends itself to a fun dining experience.

Agreed. A little bit goes a long way! Why do you think so many patrons are attracted to Zins? I think it’s the great food, great service and fun atmosphere. The customer easily becomes part of the Zins family.

The flood waters impacted hundreds of downtown businesses and restaurants, including Zins. How are you coming along in the rebuilding process? We are still shooting for November. Cross your fingers. I have learned more about government bureaucracy in the last three months than I’ve ever wanted to know. We are moving forward. At times we feel like we’re crawling forward, but at least it’s forward… .

What are you most looking forward to when Zins is able to reopen downtown? A normal day. Just a tiny piece of normalcy. Hopefully we can do our small part in helping this community heal and start to feel normal again.

CROISSANT DU JOUR M E LT S I N YO U R M O U T H What could be better than Paris in the springtime? A small French café in a strip mall on an overcast pre-fall day in Iowa, perhaps? I didn’t know what to expect from Croissant du Jour’s unassuming location as I dodged customers from the True Value Hardware next door. But when I pushed open the lovely wooden door I was pleasantly taken aback. On the other side were gleaming glass cases filled with delicious-looking pastries, clean white linens and well-polished silverware. Nice silverware, too. None of that fast food plastic nonsense or even the thin, rough-edged cafeteria metal. I enjoy this type of lunchtime scenario, a small menu of eight or so sandwiches, some salads, a few interesting soups and a little board on the counter with the day’s specials. I love the limitation! Every now and then I like to put my dining experience into an expert’s capable hands. You’re right, adorable French lady behind the counter, I would enjoy the croquemonsieur sandwich and a cup of lobster bisque. Thank you for cradling me in your loving gastronomical arms and feeding me your premium selections. The bisque was a smooth creamy soup with just enough bits of tasty lobster so as not to be too pretentious yet highly satisfying. The croque-monsieur, a very traditional French sandwich, is basically toasted ham and cheese on French bread. The bread was chewy and crisped perfectly and the cheese was melted just so. To complete my journey I had to try a pastry. Drawn to anything chocolate, I chose a chocolate éclair. Another tradition done just right with velvety chocolate pudding inside an eggy light pastry covered in a gooey chocolate frosting.

I’ll be back. Afterall, “We’ll always have Paris.” And with winter coming, I need to get a new furnace filter from True Value anyways. PAG E 2 2

PEOPLE YOU SHOULD MEET {

Don’t know Mike Schmitz or Destiny Hastings? You should.

Mike Schmitz, 27, Cedar Bluff Founder & CEO @ Knowledge Meridian Mike Schmitz tried to reinvent himself after college by shedding the more casual “Mike” in favor of his formal full name, Michael. The latter was, you know, more grown-up sounding. It didn’t stick. “I kept introducing myself as “Mike, er, I mean, Michael Schmitz,” he says, flashing an endearing grin. So, while his business cards still say Michael, he’s just plain Mike. Don’t let the name fool you. Mike has more layers than a really good baklava and wears more hats than Dr. Seuss’ cat. “I always tell people what I do based on where I meet them or what I’m doing in context,” he says. For example, talk to him at a BASE, Iowa City’s young professionals group, collaboration at Atlas in downtown Iowa City and you might hear about how he worked in college for an Iowa City non-profit called the Widernet Project, building a free virtual library of books for people in Ghana and Nigeria. Meet him volunteering and you may find out about Hike to Help Refugees, an event he organized in the Eastern Iowa Corridor that has raised around $16,000 in two years for the United Nations Refugee Agency. Or run into him at a networking event and he could wind up telling you about the couple of years he spent working on a $900 million contract to build and maintain a database for the United Kingdom’s universal health care system.

There are two things, though, that you’ll inevitably take away from every conversation. He, uh, does something with computers. And, he cares a whole hell of a lot about people. Everything Mike is and does comes from his desire to help. These days he does just about as much work for free as he does for a fee. “That’s what I love about working for myself,” he says. “I can say, ‘There’s a real need here’ and can take an entire day (to work on it).” More than building Web sites for non-profits, he’s also opening up his home. Mike lives in a converted 100-year-old country store in Cedar Bluff. The attached former post office is empty and he wants local non-profits to be able to use the space. Being able to help out in small and large ways is precisely why Mike chose to move back to Iowa City after his career sent his as far afield as Africa and England. “It’s such a close-knit community, that it’s easy for the majority to get involved,” he says. It also seemed like the perfect place to launch his technology solutions business, Knowledge Meridian. “When you start a business Iowa is a pretty soft landing,” he says. “It isn’t just about getting clients. It’s about having friends and family to really support you through the process. That’s what this place means to me.”

{ W W W. HOOPLANOW . C O M }

Destiny Hastings, 34, Cedar Rapids Director of Career Services @ Kaplan University In New York City, there are professional networkers. People who make a living connecting people, like dots on a page. In Cedar Rapids, Destiny Hastings does it for free and for fun. “I meet new people all the time. My friends joke, it’s like the six degrees of Destiny Hastings,” she says, smiling, then breaking into her signature fullbody laugh. The kind of laugh that could drag the grouch out of Oscar. There’s truth to the joke. One week after a friend started a Facebook group called “Do you know Destiny Hastings?!” there were 36 members. You also may have seen her face on a Cedar Rapids bus this month. Not riding the bus. Plastered lifesize in one of the windows as part of the United Way’s fundraising campaign. “I want to get my friends together and have a little ‘Sex and the City’ moment,” she says, referring to the HBO series episode with sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw and her friends gathered on a New York City street to drink champagne as they watched a bus with Carrie’s picture on it drive by. Destiny’s mad networking skills didn’t materialize overnight. She’s been building her virtual rolodex since her co-ed days at Coe College (class of 1998) when she joined groups like the Professional

Women’s Network, Junior Achievement and Rotary International. “I was always the youngest one at the table,” she says, cringing as she recalls how a fellow committee member used to call her “kiddo.” She learned early on that that “actions have to match words. Nobody can argue with tangible results.” Take for example a group Destiny recently started called KEY, Keeping Educated Youth, in the Corridor. More than 30 college and business representatives attended the kick-off for the group last month. “What that says to me is we’re valid with what we’re doing,” Destiny says. There’s a lot of energy coalescing around the need to engage young professionals in civic groups, she says. “I feel like it’s become more important. It’s really starting to matter.” It’s not like Destiny has never tossed around the idea of getting out of Dodge. She grew up, went to high school, college and has always worked and lived in the either Iowa City or Cedar Rapids. But, in the end, that’s exactly why she’s still here, she says. “This community has been so good to me. I need to be a good steward of it,” Destiny says. “I just love this place. I love the people. I have a great life here.” –CARLY WEBER

Other than John Adams and John Quincy Adams, we’ve never had father-and-son presidents like this before.”

The movie reunites the unlikely singing partners, basketball jock Troy (Zac Efron) and brainiac Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), along with stage rivals Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan (Lucas Grabeel). “The set decoration is insane and beautiful. To think, in the first movie, we only had a ladder,” Tisdale says, recalling one of her numbers from the original. “Everything’s bigger, from details like the wardrobe, because of how big the screen is, and the musical numbers are so much bigger.”

BookTALK {

Let’s talk about ‌ Books Baby! Natalie Ditmers and Caitlin Slessor give you the cliff notes. What are they reading right now and which books can’t they wait to crack open.

CRIME, NIRVANA AND A BEACH-WORTHY WHODUNIT For years, my reading followed patterns. I got on kicks. Crime novels (James Patterson! Michael Connelly!) chick-lit, parenting books, bestsellers and, yes, fantasy. Not anymore. I’m officially a genre-jumping, non-monogamous reader. I often read a couple books at one time. Rarely are they alike. Here are a few of my recent faves. – Caitlin

“THE SECRET HISTORY

by Donna Tartt

A group of college students lives are changed by studying Greek history. The book had a looming sense of dread draped over it. I had to get through it quickly for the catharsis of discovering what I was dreading. At times it is a crime novel, at others, a novel about college friendships and insecurities. WHEN TO READ IT: A gloomy rainy day in spring, or a November evening when short days make you want to turn indoors. YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: Tartt’s “The Little Friend.

“SIDDHARTHA

by Herman Hesse

“BANGKOK 8

by John Burdett

“Bangkok 8 is the classic vacation/beach/airplane book. It takes place in (surprise!) Bangkok, and the reader enters the fast-paced world of meth trafficking, the sex trade and the gem/precious stone trade. A whodunit with a twist, John Burdett knows how to catch the reader’s attention. WHEN TO READ IT: Summer vacation or a time you wish you were on vacation. YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: The rest of Burdett’s Bangkok books.

This book was a bright summer day in comparison. It’s an optimistic novel about a young man’s journey to discover his reason for being and the people he meets along the way. Heavy on philosophy, but in a short, readable format, it’s a book that runs through your mind long after you finish reading it.

BookTALK G O A H E A D , J U D G E A B O O K BY I T S C O V E R “HYPOCRITE IN A POUFFY WHITE DRESS”

What is it that draws you to a book? For me, it is the cover.

by Susan Jane Gilman

I know, I know. We are told from the time we are very little to never judge a book by its cover. But those of us who read a lot know that sometimes, out of sheer necessity or simply to shake things up, we need to veer away from our favorite authors and try something new.

If the title alone doesn’t grab you then the picture of a pouty little girl in big black combat boots and a fluffy white dress on the cover definitely will! It is a memoir about growing up in Manhattan in the 1970’s. It is full of one liners that will definitely make you chuckle, like “Boys might be fighters but girls could be terrorists.”

So, the question becomes how does one choose? I say look for a snazzy cover and a captivating title.

“THE DARWIN CONSPIRACY” by John Darton

Ultimately, with books, as with life, it is what’s on the inside that matters. But sometimes judging a book by its cover — allowing yourself to be snared by a color or artwork that tickles your subconscious — leads to excellent literary discoveries.

Seriously, anything with conspiracy in the title is immediately intriguing and the cover is genius in its simplicity; a brown background with a lone top hat in the center. The book, as the title suggests, is about a conspiracy surrounding Darwin’s theory of evolution and whether it truly is Darwin’s theory.

I have managed to uncover some truly great books based on nothing else. – Natalie N E X T ON MY L I ST: “ W U T H E R I N G H E I G H T S ” ( A N O L D I E B U T A G O O DY ) BY E M I LY B R O N T E , “ S TO N E C O L D ” BY D AV I D B A L D A C C I A N D “ B R E A K I N G D AW N ” BY S T E P H A N I E M E Y E R .

“Jennifer Hudson”

As the title suggests, “The Quilt” is a colorful patchwork project.

Jennifer Hudson has been a loser on TV’s “American Idol” and a winner in the film “Dreamgirls.” Although she was awarded an Oscar, in part because she tore the house down as the discarded Effie, pouting and howling her hurt way through “And I Am Telling You,” there’s been no proof of this singer’s real pop prowess. Until now.

“Blinded by the Sun,” for instance, quotes extensively from Corey Hart’s 1984 hit, “Sunglasses at Night.” The ballad “Like Father, Like Son” sounds like the Temptations meet Dr. Hook. Even the most white-bread song on the CD, “Live a Little,” suggests a mash-up of Fountains of Wayne and the Beach Boys. Gym Class Heroes are like House of Pain with serious musical chops. Superficial but pleasing, this offering is

While Timbaland’s “Pocketbook” offers Hudson a sparse, kinky groove in which to croon, “Spotlight” finds her producer/writers, Stargate and Ne-Yo, going for their usual steely finish. The world can do without another Dianne

Is the record good? Indeed. It’s grand even when it’s at its most generic and features a great voice belting emotional tunes — even if it’s a little too clear that a committee has decided which emotions to feel. And in the able gospel of “Jesus Promised Me a Home,” you get a feel for where Hudson’s heart — and soul — might truly lie when not complicated by big business.

The key to appreciating Deerhoof is shelving any expectations. Because whichever way the tricky San Francisco outfit decides to veer will translate to chiming art-pop once you get used to it. In fact, listen long enough to the prolific band’s ninth album and you can detect traces of classic rock and other familiar genres in their skewed riffs and jaunty rhythms. There’s even an unexpected twinge of folk to the twisted title track.

The cool part about the disjointed approach is that Of Montreal executes its musical weirdness without abandoning the notion of some accessible fun for listeners. Even with all the twists, the songs are mostly economically contained in 3- to 5-minute doses.

FINALWORD {

Greg Slessor has his final word on fantasy football.

LIVING IN A FANTASY WORLD By now, everyone not living off the grid has heard of fantasy football. Some may know it only by name, some may have a basic understanding and some, like me, may be obsessed.

“Maybe I should see what’s so great about this sunlight thing.”

On Sundays, most people catch a glimpse of football if only to understand the beer commercials aired during the season. For the intense (or pathetic) fantasy football player, mysterious forces demand more. Thus, on Sundays, fantasy “athletes” huddle in front of TVs and computers for hours. We give ourselves fist bumps when our fantasy players score touchdowns (no one else cares). We whine to anyone around when our opponent’s players break 10-yard runs. We bravely wipe (or lick) con queso stains off our old college intramural participant T-shirts. We even cheer serious injuries if they are not our players. Yes, you read that correctly.

I may be worse than most. I barely even watch the games. Too cheap to spring for fancy TV packages I anxiously refresh a 6-inch square, text-only Web site window throughout the day. After a few hours, my mouse-clicking finger resembles Popeye’s forearm. “Smith, 8yard run” and “Johnson, incomplete pass” become compelling

reading. The ups and downs are as emotionally wrenching as an intense game of Chutes and Ladders with a small child. If I beat my opponent, the day is a fleeting success. If I also manage to properly feed and water myself while holding a laptop for 10 hours, it’s a triumph. If I lose, it’s rough. Notes posted to the fantasy Web site like, “Good game, thought you had me there but I lucked out” make me furious. There’s nothing worse than fake good sportsmanship in fantasy football. Just tell me my team sucks. Despite setbacks and pleas from family members, fantasy players will persevere. Personally, I continue to dream of someday winning a league, looking outside, and wondering, “Maybe I should see what’s so great about this sunlight thing.” On second thought, I might miss a fantasy preview show for next year. Better not risk it.

GETOUT

{

Who says you have to be five to frolic in the leaves or pluck a pumpkin from the patch?

Who says New Yorkers have an edge on Eastern Iowans? Some sights are just that much sweeter on this side of the Mississippi. Out East, people drop big bucks on fall foliage trips. Here you don’t have to go far to see a cacophony of colors. Too jaded by a lifetime of raking to enjoy the voluminous tufts of burgundy, gold and spicy orange leaves?

Channel your inner five-year-old. What about plucking a pumpkin from a patch and or an apple at the orchard? Or if you just can’t fathom getting those nails dirty and hair windblown in the wilds of a pumpkin patch, enjoy a different kind of fall entertainment. Shopping. It’s never too early to start stocking up on Christmas presents.

This former lead mining town near the convergence of Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin is a shopping mecca for Midwesterns from Chicago, Milwaukee and Cedar Rapids to Minnesota, Michigan and Indiana.

Bloomsbury Farm is in full swing this fall. Cavort through the 10-acre corn maze or pluck a pumpkin from the patch. For a screamin’ good time, head to the farm after sunset for a turn through the haunted barn and corn maze.

The panoramic views from atop Pikes Peak’s 500-foot limestone bluffs in northeast Iowa are breathtaking, as is the final climb up the “steps” carved into one of the more popular footpaths in the 1,000-acre state park.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays to Thursday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday through October 31. Admission is $9, including the corn maze and other attractions.

Take a picnic and a camera, lace up your hiking boots and be prepared to be amazed.

On the weekends crowds converge on Main Street, lined with 19th-century storefronts housing 90 quaint shops and restaurants. If crowds aren’t your thang, head there on weekdays, when the area is less congested.
