“Thomas Jefferson. He’s kinda hot. And I dig writers.”
■■
Seth Smith is an Iowa City native and graduate of the University of Iowa School of Art & Art History. His idea of a great weekend is one spent with his wife and kids during the day, and reading, playing Xbox or watching TiVo’d boxing after they’ve gone to bed.

“Bill Clinton. Is that wrong?” Victoria Fish is an Iowa girl through and through. She has been with The Gazette since earning her degree in commercial art in 1996. In her free time she enjoys cheering on the Hawkeyes and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoys scrapbooking but wishes she had more time for it.
Andrea is an avid baker and home chef who also works full time as a graphic designer for a large internet company. She is currently teaching her 10-month-old daughter the fine art of baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie.
Caitlin Slessor
Art Director
“Second President John Adams. His cousin was fellow revolutionary Samuel Adams, so I figure he could hook us up with some Boston Lager on the cheap.”
Carly Weber is an Alaskan transplant who had to learn to navigate by interstates not mountains and has to pretend she’s seeing the ocean by squinting when she crosses the Mississippi River. She gets excited about new foods, $5 bottles of wine, learning new words, reading beautiful phrases, filling in the last crossword puzzle answer and most of all spending time with her family.

Book Talk
“FDR. He was smart enough to nix that silly prohibition.”
“No doubt about it, Ronald Reagan (sorry Nancy).”
Caitlin spends her days as a private practice attorney in Cedar Rapids and her nights in slippers on her porch with a book. In between, she is lucky to have a hilarious husband and daughter to cook for, sing Credence Clearwater Revival with and share her love of all things book-y. She’s come a long way since her childhood, when she tried to sneak books into church and spent weddings under tables reading.
Natalie grew up in Council Bluffs. She attended Iowa State University and obtained her law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. She currently practices law at Bradley & Riley, P.C. In her spare time she enjoys reading (of course!), biking, cooking, traveling and spending time with friends.

“George W. Bush. So I could smash the bottle over his head.”
“I’d love to chat with FDR about his economic stimulus programs, perhaps he could help us out of our slump”

For the last week my morning routine had a new and not very awesome addition. I poured my coffee into a to-go mug, dropped the cell phone in the purse, coaxed myself, my little monkey and our several dozen bags, coats, and cups into the car. I buckled my seat belt, sigh, held my breath and pressed preset button one on my car’s radio, the one that tunes to 90.9 KUNI. Then. There it was. The all too familiar
And hurrah. Wednesday morning, when I pressed that preset button. What did I hear? Steve Inskeep’s sweet nothings.
The world just wasn’t right without Steve Ins-
Yes. I know I could have tuned to 910 AM. But, it’s fuzzy. And to be honest. I’d rather listen to 20 minutes of bagpipes (apologies to pipers out there) than two minutes of semi audible talk radio. Before we knew it was an equipment failure (one that

a multimillion-dollar plan to temporarily beef up the city’s flood protection. This will involve the purchase of two systems — one that uses mesh baskets lined with plastic that are filled with sand and one that features plastic bladders that are filled with water. Each system can be erected within days of a serious flood threat and then removed once the threat subsides. The total cost of materials for the temporary protection is between $3.2 million and $3.7 million, a cost that climbs to between $5.7 million and $6.5 million if contractors have to be mobilized to put the system in place and take it down. City Manager Jim Prosser said the city likely will need to sell bonds to raise money to cover the costs. The temporary fix will protect flood-prone neighborhoods and the downtown to a river level of 24 feet as measured at a river gauge near downtown.

Mark Olson & Gary Louris
Thursday, February 19 @ 8 p.m. For fans of The Jayhawks, the reunion of Mark Olson and Gary Louris is huge. The Jayhawks, led by the two Minneapolis singer-songwriters, were one of the most critically acclaimed alternative-country bands of the ’90s. The group even scored a minor hit with the 1995 song “Blue.” Olson left The Jayhawks shortly thereafter and eventually embarked on a solo career. Louris continued with the band, but the spark was gone. Now, more than a decade later, Olson and Louris are back together with a new album, “Ready for the Flood,” which finds the duo’s lush combination of folk, country and roots music still intact. eric clark shunned music until he was 12 and has been obsessed with it ever since. he’s been the arts and entertainment reporter at the gazette since 2004.

Doesn’t Mason Jennings’ name make him sound like a big deal? He has no relation, though, to more famous Jenningses like Waylon (outlaw-country legend), Shooter (Waylon’s son) and, um, Peter (longtime news guy). Still, Jennings has been making a name for himself since the late ’90s as a solid singer-songwriter. These days, Jennings is doing his singing and songwriting for Brushfire Records, which is owned by mega-popular surf-folkie Jack Johnson. Jennings released his seventh album, “In the Ever,” last year, his latest collection of smoothly funky acoustic songs. Mason Jennings

Saturday, February 21 @ 9 p.m. Move over, Shawn Johnson. William Elliott Whitmore is ready to become Iowa’s new golden child. OK, so the probability of a barrel-voiced folk singer (Whitmore) becoming more popular than a sprightly gymnast (Johnson) is slim. But Whitmore, who has lived his entire life on a farm outside Montrose in southeast Iowa, definitely is worthy of some local love. Here’s why: After three albums spent perfecting his dark, bluesy style of folk music, Whitmore now is recording alongside the likes of Tom Waits, Billy Bragg and Neko Case on Anti-Records. Whitmore’s new album, “Animals in the Dark,” already has received loads of national and international attention. Keep an eye on this guy. William Elliott Whitmore

YOU SHOULD MEET
Jessica Palmer, 32, Cedar Rapids
Director of Marketing and Research @ Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau There was a time, not so long ago, when Jessica Palmer was back in college and waiting tables part time at the former Bistro on First. There she sold wine and steak. Today, she sells the city of Cedar Rapids as the director of marketing for the Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitor’s Bureau.
Jessica grew up in Cedar Rapids, a graduate of Kennedy High School.
I just knew there was a need,” she says. “I just took the idea and ran with it.”
Like many of her peers “I was always one of those that thought I need to get out of here,” she says.
In the beginning and still, the state’s YP Iowa group and Rep. Tyler Olson D-Cedar Rapids were instrumental. That first year Gov. Culver signed into law the bill that created the state’s Generation Iowa Commission. This year’s event is Monday, Feb. 23.
It’s a job she started only the week before the June 2008 floods. It’s a job that’s changed a lot since those floods.
But she didn’t. Instead, she went to Kirkwood Community College for two years. Got married, had a daughter, got divorced and went back to school, this time a bachelors in business and marketing from Mount Mercy College.
On one hand the floods put Cedar Rapids on the map. On the other hand, to overly simplify it, Jessica’s product took a hit.
It was as the manager of communications research with Priority One that Jessica “quickly fell back in love with the community.”
“I need to have an exciting product to sell,” she says. “Part of the problem (with Cedar Rapids) is there are too many best kept secrets.”
“I had so much energy and passion for getting involved. So I did,” she says.
Jessica sees it as her job to pull the curtain back on Cedar Rapids’ secrets.
One of the first things she did was start the now annual pilgrimage of young professionals to Des Moines for YP Day at the Capitol.
She hasn’t always felt that way.
“I was totally clueless myself about the process.
“Politics can be intimidating. It’s really so much easier than you realize. All you need to do is be introduced to the process,” says Jessica, who now sits on the executive board for YP Iowa. She’s also on Cedar Rapids Next Generation Committee.
What she can do for you: Want to participate in this year’s YP Day at the Capitol? E-mail Jessica at jypalmer@gmail.com
“There are incredible opportunities to shape the future that you wouldn’t have anywhere else,” she says. “You can see (the opportunies and responsibilities) rolling into the next generation. There is going to be even more of that coming.”
Did you know:
Jessica ran her first marathon in Honolulu a couple of years ago. She’d planned to run her second last summer. The floods changed those plans. This year is the year, though, she says, “I’m bound and determined that this is going to be a good year.”

Tell us about your decision to come back after the flood.
We anticipated getting about two to three feet of water and ended up getting six feet of water above our ceiling. People are still blown away when they see pictures we have from the flood. We knew right away we wanted to come back and take it a step further with some cool new ideas.

New ideas like the game room?
Exactly. We expanded our area with a place for recreation and relaxation. It became kind of a joke. We asked people “What would you like to have in your make-believe basement?” We have it stocked with a big flat screen TV, theater style seats, dart boards, pool tables, a Nintendo Wii and more.
I was excited about the return of the martini list. It’s one of the best around. Who created it?
When I came on board there were already a few recipes created, but over the course of the first few months we started taking the list and tweaking it. Based on what worked, what didn’t, we added or eliminated. We listened to the customers, got creative on some new ideas and new names and it’s what you see today.
What’s your favorite night to be behind the bar?
Definitely Saturday night. Big crowd. Everyone is into the dueling pianos and as a bartender you’re observing and giving the best service you can. You get people in celebrating a variety of things like bachelorette parties, birthdays or just life in general. I love the variety from farmers to lawyers.
The staff at Piano Lounge has a knack for dazzling customers with fun bottle tricks. Is that a required talent or do you show them the ropes?
It’s not something we really teach. Before my job at here I worked at a bar that had a lot of slow time during the week, so I started practicing some moves. A few other bartenders here had done the same thing and before long we were known for throwing the bottles around. The goal is to always to get a drink out as fast as possible. But if you can pull in some fun moves while accomplishing that, all the better. Confession: I’m not a fan of sushi. I know it’s hip and all the kids are doing it, but I still can’t get past the raw fish thing. It’s wrong and frankly embarrassing since I am writing to you as a food critic. Shew, I feel better for putting that on the table. That being said, I ate at Sushi Popo, one of Iowa City’s most famed and beloved sushi restaurants. In addition to their vast selection of sushi they also offer delicious Chinese and Japanese entrees. I ordered the wussiest of all sushi, a California roll. To my surprise it was yummy and very fresh with just a hint of that fishy taste that usually turns me away. It actually grew on me to a point where I wanted to try other sushi. Apparently that is the magic of Sushi Popo, they hook you with a little taste and then you come back begging for more. For my entrée I ordered the most complex Japanese dish I could find, nabe yakiudon. It was a boiling pot of udon noodles, chicken and mixed vegetables in a flavorful broth with a giant tempura shrimp delicately perched on top. Also on top was an egg yolk, which I promptly removed and ate everything else. I was being adventurous but I have my limits.

If you live in the Corridor, chances are you’ve purchased a book at Barnes and Noble Booksellers . B&N is like a department store for book lovers. They pay a lot of attention to their displays and layout. During any given holiday, shoppers can find seasonal books laid out in the middle aisle, right inside the door. This is great when you’re bopping in for a last minute gift for Uncle George. My personal favorite, though, is the fiction section. Big surprise, I know, but rows and rows of books alphabetized by author’s last name can keep me browsing for hours. In a good way. Tightly bound new books are my shopping weakness. Just try packing my house for a move. Treasure-hunters can often find gems in the bargain books section of the store. This is where giant coffee table books are on sale for prices like $6.99. I think of this as the eye-candy section. I buy unnecessary books on decorating, cookbooks from obscure locales (Cooking: Mid-Central Rhone-Valley Style) and photography books. Just because.
ies. I almost always have to stop by the attached Starbucks, grab a tall coffee (no room for cream necessary, please) and browse the magazines. If there’s anything I love more than books, it’s magazines. So colorful! So specifically targeted. While I have no photography skills whatsoever, I enjoy browsing the art and photography magazines a lot. The super-complicated knitting pattern magazines also fascinate me. I just realized how boring I must sound. What I meant to say is that I love HARPER’S BAZAAR and VOGUE, and all the other stuff the cool kids read. Sure, B&N isn’t the cheapest place to get a new best-seller, but as the days warm up and you want to get out of your house in the evening, nothing beats a good bookstore browse session. Just remember that you might have to pack all of those books and move them someday. For now, there’s not harm in just looking at “TRUE by Kristin Hannah, is there?
There’s nothing like shopping for bright shiny books in a store that smells like coffee and cook-

You’ve heard their music. Now know their story.
Three bands in one night.
MONDAY • 4PM-8PM $3 BASKETS OF WINGS
Done it before, and we’ll do it again. There’s such a wealth of musical talent in this area. Let’s go band-hopping, shall we? My wife and I started our Saturday night at Tailgators Sports Bar in Cedar Rapids. Brett “Otis” Mitchell is doing a great job bringing in bands and making a name for his bar as a decent rock club. In fact, this location has a rich history of offering good bands, going back over 30 years, back when it was The Bank, then Pete & Tillie’s and most recently 3rd Base. Otis carries on the tradition. Don’t be surprised if he jumps up on the stage and sings lead vocals a few times. But tonight we were here to check out the band 3RD DEGREE. I’d heard of them for several years, and we were excited to finally hear them play tonight at Tailgators. “King Dale” Brumwell and crew were in fine form. Some original songs, which are always fun, but the bulk of their sets consisted of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s rock. Good stuff.

Then we waved goodbye to the band, friendly bartenders and Otis and drove downtown to Volume. In less than two years, Brian Hughes has created a powerhouse music venue downtown in the old Dragon location on Second Avenue SE. Volume was one of the first downtown places to re-open after the flood. So now, once again, you can catch the area’s best bands down there almost every weekend. We were there to see HYPERFUZZ. Kyle Oyloe on his hot red Gibson SG. Fred Seltrecht on his killer drum set. New members Brook Hoover and Joel McDowell were rocking out as well. Ever heard of “surf-rock?” Interesting. Fortunately, most of their music is good old fun classic rock. You might wanna check out these guys. They’re popular everywhere they play. P H OTO P R O V I D E D H Y P E R F U Z Z
Next we headed south, past Czech Village, on down J Avenue, to 5th Gear Bar & Grill to see JAMPACT. Owner Scott Riley keeps a wellstocked bar, which was a good thing because the crowd was wall-towall. Jampact features Dave Kent on guitar, Ed Sherman on bass, Rob Kramer on drums and our favorite singer Rob Wallace on vocals. How can you go wrong when a band plays Poison, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Buckcherry songs and the singer hits every note? As a reminder, be sure to check out Rob’s other bands – “Mike & Rob,” and “Stranded in Iowa.”
At the end of the night, the bands quit playing, bars closed down, owners threw us out and we headed for home. Next week, let’s do it again. P H OTO P R O V I D E D J A M PA C T
