I got a peek at DC’s River Walk Pub & Eatery, Cedar Rapids newest bar/restaurant, Monday morning before they officially opened. DC’s is in the spot once home to Bistro on First and more recently Kostantinos at 411 First St. SE. If you’re still struggling to place it, the building backs up to the Cedar River, with Smulekoff’s to the north and the former Muddy Water’s right next door. Their Grand Opening Celebration will be on St. Patrick’s Day, with Jeff Bruner taking the stage at 3 p.m.

menu is the same as Third Base Brewery, with the addition of some entrees fashioned by chefs from Zins, another Cedar Rapids’ restaurant that hasn’t reopened since the flood.
Dave is part owner in a half dozen or so bars in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and Des Moines, including a DC’s in Iowa City. He’s had a lot of opening days. But this one is different, he said.
Throughout the space there was ambience for the gals and lots of flat-screen televisions for the guys.
I didn’t realize this. But DC’s was a week from opening in June, when the floods hit. The waters destroyed everything, even the flat-screens hung high on the walls. So he had to start over, from scratch.
Hoopla
DC’s calls itself a pub. And it feels like one. Dave says the
Behind the main dining area is a large game room. I wasn’t paying a lot of attention since gaming isn’t my thing. But I did notice a pool table and a game with a deer on it. I’m sure it involved shooting a pretend gun.
For another, the road to Monday was a long one.
■ ■
I’m glad he did. The result is fabulous. If you’re familiar with the eateries that once occupied this space, don’t go to DC’s expecting the same look or feel. Dave knocked down walls to create a wide-open space with a large U-shaped bar. The walls are original brick. Part of the dining area is partitioned by railings flanked with faux street lanterns.
Monday though, owner Dave Carey gave me a quick tour as the kitchen, wait and bar staff filled the last ketchup bottles and rolled the final few pieces of silverware.
For one, DC’s Riverwalk is all his. No partners. He’s the only one on the line.
PAGE 04
Had he known it was going to take until March to open, he may not have rebuilt, Dave said.
{ WWW. H O O P L A N O W .COM }
There’s been a lot of buzz around the opening of this new restaurant. Dave thinks it’s because people are hungry to get downtown again. I wouldn’t argue with that. And walking through DC’s, it lived up to the hype. Welcome back downtown. I, for one, am glad you’re here.
I’m just sayin’,

town, but you do. The Downtown District is asking downtown business owners, building managers and volunteers to help keep the sidewalks clean and safe by cleaning up the trash and cigarette butts revealed by melting snow and the onset of rainy spring days. In the next few weeks, the Downtown District plans to announce the maintenance coordinator, which will kickoff the downtown spring cleaning and beautification efforts. CEDAR RAPIDS — Theatre Cedar Rapids is standing at
the threshold of its biggest production yet. Reclaiming the Iowa Theatre Building, 102 Third St. SE, from the June floods. It will take at least $6 million to do that, but much of that funding is in place or in the works. Reconstruction is set to begin this spring and be complete by February 2010. Renovations plans call for expanding the lobby and breaking through the wall by the stairs in three places to gain access to a new lounge fronting First Avenue. The space next door that used to house City News will be divided into the Box Office and the Fed Hedges Library. Staff offices will move to the second floor, basement greenroom and dressing rooms will be moved and new rehearsal and classroom spaces will be carved out of the catacombs previously occupied by Superior Press.

The Beggarmen Sunday, March 8 @ 8 p.m. Get your St. Patrick’s Day fix a week early with the Iowa City acoustic quartet The Beggarmen. Each member of the group, Brad Pouleson, Keith Reins, Tara Dutcher and Keith Dutcher, first picked up an instrument as a young child. In the intervening years they’ve dabbled in different genres, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, and with various instruments. The result is a group that performs traditional Celtic music as well as original compositions on the fiddle, guitar, tin whistles, mandolin, uilleann pipes and bodhran (the Irish frame drum).
The Beggarmen 8 p.m. Sunday (3/8), The Englert Theatre, 221 East Washington St., Iowa City, FREE, (319) 688-2653; www. englert.org
They will be joined on stage by lively Irish step dancers, including Amy LeMieux who received her training from the McNulty School of Irish Dance and the World Academy of Irish Dancing. The concert is part of the Free Community Spotlight Series and the audience is encouraged to bring an item to donate to the Iowa City Crisis Center.

Mom’s mac and cheese. A big slice of chocolate cake. Thanksgiving turkey. Food. We talk about it, read books about it. There’s even an entire network dedicated to it. America’s obsessed with food. So it makes sense that The Riverside Theatre chose food as the topic for its tenth annual “Walking the Wire: Monologues at Riverside.” Nothing is off-limits, as their team of actors recount favorite food stories from playwrights across the country and right here in Iowa.

Paul Goetzman, 18, Hiawatha
Freshman @ Mount Mercy College Web Developer and Designer @ CancerReallySucks.org It all started five years ago as a class project as a sophomore at Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School. Paul Goetzman agreed to design a Web site for a local non-profit that was just getting started, Gems of Hope, an organization that gives gifts of jewelry mounted on inspirational cards to cancer patients.

Still, he maintains CancerReallySucks.org “I’m pretty set on it,” he says. “I had no idea what would come of it,” he says. “There’s always different things At some point, he’d like to pass the to tweak.” daily responsibilities of the site over to someone else. But until that person Web design isn’t his passion though. He steps up, Paul says he’ll continue to fill could take it or leave it. the need.
Since then Paul has gone on not only to continue to maintain Gems of Hope’s Web site, www.GemsofHopeNet.org, but He may have a lot of experience buildalso helped launched that group’s sister ing sites, but “my plan is to do nothing site specifically for teens, www.Cancer- with computers,” Paul says. ReallySucks.org With the help of a panel of teens who have been affected by cancer, Paul created a site for teens to connect, vent and deal with the illness. The class ended years ago and Paul has
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a plan. He does. A very specific one. “I plan to be a Cedar Rapids police officer,” he says. “Not just a police officer. A Cedar Rapids police officer.”
It helps, he says, that he’s a teen heading up a site that’s built for teens. “The whole site is pretty interactive,” he says. There’s a wall, for example, where visitors can post what they’re thankful for. The result is a rainbow of thoughts of thanks for “ the greatest BFF Sarah D and The Sound Of Music,” and “my
sister being given a second chance at life.” There’s also a section called “How to Deal” designed by counselors and social workers to help teens identify their emotions. A message board provides a place for teens to ask questions or share their story. Paul says the hardest part of the site is getting the word out. But someone is noticing. In high school, he won Kohls’ Kids Who Care award for his work and more recently he received a National Philanthropic Award for his efforts on behalf of Gems of Hope and Cancer Really Sucks. “I help them a lot, but I see it the other way around,” Paul says. “I love to do it because I love to see the end result: people using it.” -CARLY WEBER

Adin Wheat, 35, Cedar Rapids Chef @ Cedar River Landing You’ve only been in Cedar Rapids a few months. What brought you here? Long story, but I’ll try. I’m originally from New England. I fell in love with cooking when I was 13. I started working as a dishwasher at a little restaurant in New Hampshire, moved on to seafood houses in Maine then even lived in Italy for 9 months. My aunt and I opened up a place (Café Dodici) in Washington, Iowa about five years back. I decided to venture on and ended up with an opportunity in Cedar Rapids. I love food and am always hungry. The answer’s always been obvious.
Cedar River Landing is also new to town. How’s that going?
The response has been great. So far so good. People love the food, and they keep coming back. Just the other day a lady brought me fresh alligator game she got while in Florida.
Uh … what?
She was so jazzed by our menu combination, she was inspired to bring (some alligator) back for the cause. We have an assortment of basic menu items (hamburgers, chicken strips, fries) but take it further and offer some classic Creole and Cajun options, like crawfish, jambalaya, oyster shots, alligator fries and more.
WEDNESDAY - SATURDAY 6PM - 2AM
What have been some of the challenges and pleasant surprises of launching a new restaurant?
The biggest challenge was the very essence of rebuilding. We’re literally in the middle of a flood impacted area, so just getting it together and keeping it together. For a pleasant surprise I’d have to go with how busy we’ve been. Between the flood and tough economic times, it’s been nice to see consistent traffic. What it comes down to is: the area, particularly our neighborhood, needed something like Cedar River Landing and we were able to respond.
What can someone find at Cedar River Landing on a busy night?
Beyond the food, there’s always something to do, like live music, happy hour or good conversation at the bar.
I can’t wait for this answer. What’s the most popular dish on the menu? It’s a toss up between the crawfish bites (go to HooplaNow.com for a recipe) or the alligator fries. Most people start out curious about either one and ended up liking one or the other.

Motley Cow Café Taming the wild streets of IC in search of the Cow Time for another personal confession: Iowa City frightens me. It frightens me in a grandma-navigating-cable-television or woman-who’s-never-pumped-gas-before sort of way. I think it’s all the one-way streets. Or it could be the fact that the only parking is parallel between beat-up Honda Civics and Chevy Cavaliers. Either way, the city renders me helpless and lost like a little puppy.

Fortunately, my worldly and Iowa City-savvy friend, Caitlin, offered to go out for dinner with me and do the driving. With my protective bubble securely in place we went to the Motley Cow Café. Motley Cow is a chic upscale restaurant that sources as many local products as possible. The menu is fresh and diverse with a blend of flavors that highlight the best the Midwest has to offer. From the menu I chose the broiled wild stripe bass over porcini lentils in a smoked paprika broth with pineapple slices, topped with kale and pine nuts. The bass was juicy and delicate and contrasted nicely against the saltiness of the kale followed by a sweet hit of the pineapple. The dessert menu was equally unique so Caitlin and I split the cardamom funnel cake topped with root beer ice cream and cherry cordial. I’ve never felt so sophisticated eating a funnel cake. Thanks to Caitlin for gently coaxing me out of my comfort zone and for doing the driving. I’m hoping next time she shows me how to use one of those crazy gas-pumping machines.

A tru ly c h i l l i n g ta l e I couldn’t let winter end without telling you about “The Terror” Did you think that the -20 degree days we had this year were scary? Well, make that -70 degrees and picture your food supply rotting while trying to avoid a terrible demise at the claws of a vicious snow beast who hunts humans with specific glee. Oh, and imagine that you’re low on rum. That’s the fate of the men of the Terror and Erebus, a two-ship expedition to find the Northwest Passage. The exuberant crew of the Erebus and Terror, led by Sir John Franklin, begins with high hopes of finding a short way to Asia via the yet-undiscovered Northwest Passage. The plan gets literally stuck, for years, when the ships are frozen in place. Sir John dies right away, and a lot of the book is told from the perspective of Captain Crozier. The crew slowly dwindles away as the group scrapes and scratches across the Arctic, in search of rescue. War books and other stories of extreme human suffering tend to stick around in my head for a while, but “The Terror” takes it to a new level. The psychological aspects are just as [insert favorite synonym for scary] as the outright gore. And what’s a good ol’ exploration book if cannibalism isn’t at least alluded to? The book was relentlessly scary. Simmons pens some amazing descriptions. The reader feels the cold, craves the rum and fears the beast, as if right there on the ship. Unlike a lot of other horror fiction, this book does not disappoint in the end. The message is one of caution against arrogance when dealing with nature. Work with it, don’t try to defeat it. If you like your history fictional, frightening and with a twist of supernatural, check out “The Terror.” Read past dark at your own risk. Brrrrr. —c aitlin

Well Lit The Talent: Scott Schneekloth (vocals), Randy Schneekloth (drums), William Peters (guitar) = and Parry Dahl (bass) The Sound: Covers of 60s, 70s and 80s hits The gigs: March 17 @ Chrome Horse Saloon, 1202 3rd Street SE, Cedar Rapids The music: Hear an mp3 at www.HooplaNow.com The rest of the story: www.welllitband.com
Their worst critics call Well Lit a simple bar band. With hundreds of loyal followers, Well Lit wouldn’t have it any other way. What started as a high school love for rock classics more than twenty years ago has blossomed into the eclectic combination of cover hits spanning more than four decades of music. William and Randy, the founding members of the group, were high school buds while Scott (Randy’s brother) joined the group after offering to help with vocals during a rehearsal. Parry, the band’s final member, is a childhood friend of Scott’s. “When we figured out our fourth should be Parry, we came to life. It truly became fun,” Scott says. “They asked me to join three years ago…. I still haven’t said yes,” Parry says. Their Corridor-wide fan base has it all, from the 20-something who loves the classic sounds to the
50-year-old who grew up with the hits on the billboard charts. Queen, Tom Petty, Kiss and The Beatles are among the artists found in a typical set. “There’s nothing these guys can’t play,” Scott says. “Their abilities are amazing.” Their individual performance style on stage provides an energy felt by their audience. “I love to perform and entertain,” says Randy. “It’s not about me, it’s about (the band) and our audience. If the audience is having a good time, we’re having a good time.” The band loves performing in an area with such an abundance of local talent. “You can’t get the same kind of interaction from a DJ that you can from a live local band,” Scott says. “It’s a show. It’s a unique energy.” — QUINN
