SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

True confession. My husband and I went to Chicago over Easter weekend. I’ve never felt guilty about the trip before. We go every year. That’s where we spent our honeymoon. Truth be told. I feel like Sinatra sang “My Kind of Town” for me. I heart

the Windy City. But now that I’m spending every day extolling the virtues of the Corridor, I feel kind of like a cheating spouse, hightailing it east to enjoy all that Chicago has to offer. Thinking about it as I was sitting down to write this, though, I realized that the ability to take a weekend trip to Chicago is really just another reason I love living in

Eastern Iowa. Think about it. How many other places can you live and be less than six hours away from not one, not two, but seven destination cities? Here in the Corridor, we are within easy driving distance of not just Chicago but also Kansas City, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Omaha, Madison and Milwaukee. Seriously. You can hop in the car after work on a Friday, be in town in time for a late dinner, spend all day Saturday taking in the sights and be on the road and home Sunday with time to spare.

Saturday we got rush tickets for “Jersey Boys.” Which, as an aside, was amazing. It’s the story of Frankie Valli (not to be confused, as I was, with Ritchie Valens, who died in the plane crash in Iowa) and The Four Seasons. I had no idea how many great songs these guys were behind. Like “Sherry,” “Earth Angel,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Oh What a Night” and more, enough to fill nearly three hours on the stage. After the show we went to dinner at Rockit Bar & Grill. I had a lobster burger. I was wooed by the menu’s claim that it was the Best Burger in Burgerfest 2007. It was good. But the bun was dry. Best burger? Eh. The sweet potato fries and cocktails were delish though. We ended the night at Howl at the Moon, a piano bar full of bachelorette parties, buckets of beer, raucous singing and probably more than a few tourists like us. If I lived in Chicago, not probably the kind of bar I’d go to. But I don’t. So we love it. Sunday morning coffee and we hit the road. At the in-laws by 1 p.m. In time for an Easter egg hunt with the kids and still home by 6 p.m. No matter how much you love your hometown, sometimes

it’s nice to just get away.

I’m just sayin’,

In our case we spent Friday night listening to jazz at our favorite hole in the wall, Andy’s Jazz Club on Hubbard.

All the news you didn’t know you needed to know.

We heart the earth Nearly 20 organizations from Iowa City to Cedar Rapids have joined forces for the Corridor Earth Project with the hope of making every day Earth Day in the Corridor. The 39th anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated Wednesday. Each participating Corridor organization, business or agency is sponsoring Earth Day activities throughout April. Events include nature and labyrinth walks, roadside cleanups, films and more. The groups hope to offer a combined, large-scale event — perhaps a concert, outdoor walk/run and other family activities — next year. Event details at

Work should be complete by mid-July at Third Avenue, the end of July at Fourth Avenue and mid-August at the Ground Transportation Center.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Volunteers are being recruited for a massive cleanup effort along I-380, from The Eastern Iowa Airport to Blairs Ferry Road. The cleanup is planned for April 25. More information about times and meeting points will be available soon, but for now, please reserve the date on your calendar, and get ready to help transform the ugliness of the remnants of winter into the beauty of a Cedar Rapids spring.

Alpin Hong Wednesday through Friday, April 22 to 24 Anyone who can play Tetris and the piano simultaneously shouldn’t really need more of an introduction. But, turns out there is plenty more to say about pianist Alpin Hong. The Julliard-trained musician won first place in the 2001 Concert Artist’s Guild competition and is a skateboarder, snowboarder and martial artist in his free time. His four-day residency at the University of Iowa includes two free performances – one at the Cedar Rapids Piano Lounge on Wednesday and another at the UI Hospitals and Clinics on Thursday. His time in Iowa culminates with a Friday concert, presented by Hancher Auditorium, featuring music by J.S. Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Brahms and George Gershwin. The Right Now

Vienna Teng

Friday, April 17

Saturday, April 18

The time could be right now for The Right Now. Vocalist Stefanie Berecz may be only 23 years old, but she has achieved career peaks that performers twice her age never get to experience, like opening for Mary J. Blige and appearing on MTV’s hit series “Making The Band.” Berecz’s voice, evoking Alicia Keys and Chaka Khan with a unique melodic sensibility of her own, places her at the forefront of new R&B vocalists alongside Keyshia Cole, John Legend and Corrine Bailey Rae. Joining forces with guitarist Brendan O’Connell to form the nucleus of The Right Now, their sound is both contemporary and classic.

Vienna Teng’s sophisticated, piano-driven chamber folk has everyone from NPR to David Letterman raving. Critics have announced her as the next Joni Mitchell or Tori Amos. Her Cedar Rapids show comes on the heel of an anticipated spring release, “Inland Empire.” Teng likens the collection on her new CD to a mix tape album with a lot of common themes but each song existing in a different world. Songs range from a gospel-tinged testimonial inspired by her Chinese grandmother to a cautiously hopeful shout-out to new President Obama, recorded in settings as varied as a church and a living room, with instrumentation ranging from foot stomps to vintage keyboards to full-string orchestra.

Thais Carnall, 32, Cedar Rapids

Steve Gloeckner, 34, Cedar Rapids

Owner/marketing @ TheArtFeed.com

Shop Manager @ Scheels, Coralville and Owner/artist @ TheArtFeed.com

Like most first-time entrepreneurs, Thais Carnall and Steve Gloeckner spent more time wondering if their business idea was, as Steve puts it, “dumb,” than they did building the business once they decided to just do it. Once you know their backgrounds, you’ll wonder why they hesitated. Their venture, The ArtFeed.com makes total sense. Thais knows marketing and public relations. Steve knows art. The Art Feed is part online gallery and part promotional tool for local artists. The Art Feed isn’t their first attempt to give local artists a voice. Three years ago, they,

along with a friend, founded Harvester, an annual art event that spotlights up and coming Iowan artists whose work is outside the lines of traditional art. Basically, Steve wanted a show where he wrote the rules. He was over being told his work was “too edgy” for galleries. “There’s nakedness,” Thais says conspiratorially. She describes his work as “graphic human form.” Not the stuff you’d hang above the fireplace. Even in their house, though it’s all over the walls, a gallery of his most recently finished work hung to dry. The piece above the fireplace is one he did of Thais’ bouquet from their wedding.

So at Harvester last fall, Steve was one of 30 artists featured to the 500 or so attendees in two days. But, Harvester is just once year to a sizable but finite group of people. The Art Feed is limitless. And, of course, Thais and Steve would like to see it test those bounds. After launching in October, the Web site has around 50 featured artists. It’s an online gallery, where artists can upload images of their work, reach potential buyers and sell their pieces commission-free. It is also a spot for artists and the community to find out about art-related businesses and events.

“The Art Feed is the perfect place for artists who may not have their own Web site,” Thais says. “Our ultimate goal with The Art Feed is to make sure Iowa artists get noticed and have a place to display their work. To put a local focus on it is really important.” But, of course, it’s a business venture, albeit not a particularly lucrative one. Yet. “We’re not a non-profit, but it’s not profitable,” says Thais, smiling. A basic membership, which allows them to upload three images and create an artist profile, is free. For $29.95 a year, artists can upload an unlimited number of images under their profile. Even Steve had to pay. “I made him,” Thais says. “Yeah, I was pissed,” Steve says, laughing. -CARLY WEBER

1st Avenue Wine House

St. Andrews Golf Club

I love Italian food. I love great wine. And I love good company. Vino’s Ristorante and RG Books Lounge is the best threefer in town. From the moment you walk in, the staff treats you like family. Whether you’re just wanting to grab a quick cocktail before heading off to the symphony or you want to settle down for a night of chatter with friends, the comfortable atmosphere delivers fantastic ambience. Comfy couches, a beautiful marble bar and, of course, books all around make you feel like you’re in a city much bigger than Cedar Rapids.

I consider myself somewhat of a wine connoisseur, and the 1st Avenue Wine House is a wine lover’s delight. Ron and Traci Weber, who run the place, make regular trips out to Napa, not to mention other wine-rich regions around the world. My favorite is grabbing a gourmet cheese out of their fridge and having them recommend a wine to go along. Never had a bad recommendation!

I realized pretty quickly I’d never see my husband unless I learned to golf, and now I’m hooked. I love the course at St. Andrews (it’s public!). It’s challenging, but you can go slow and learn while playing with seasoned pros. The guys in the pro shop are so friendly, and the old-timers are always glad to give you a couple of tips for hitting the green. The driving range is huge, meaning even if it’s busy you can find a place to hit some balls. Plus, I get to show off my golf wardrobe!

House / Club Hits / Old School / Hip Hop

Borge Zierke, 43, North Liberty Chef/owner @ The Fireside Why did you want to become a chef? I needed something to do after I got out of the military and the culinary arts program at Des Moines Area Community College intrigued me. Once I got in, I found it was something I really liked to do.

Where did you go from there? While I was in school at DMACC, I worked at the Greenbriar in Johnson. Then I moved to Iowa City, and worked at a lot of unique restaurants that are no longer in business, and at the State Room at the UI. I went on to Southeast Missouri State University and the Oxford University Club in Oxford, Mississippi — that’s where I learned the ins and outs of Southern cuisine. From there, I took a job at Mason’s Restaurant in eastern Maryland. My wife had an opportunity to come back to Iowa to run a non-profit organization, and after eating at the Fireside Grill in Kalona and talking to the owner, I was hired as a consultant chef, and three weeks later, the owners offered to sell me the restaurant.

I heard a rumor that you cooked for the cast and crew of “Wedding Crashers” and “Failure to Launch” while you were in Maryland. What types of dishes did you prepare for them? We served them lunch and dinner. They pretty much ordered off the menu. I can tell you that Owen Wilson likes his rare tuna tartar and well-done burgers. I did also have an opportunity to cook for Donald Rumsfeld, and every time he came in he had foes GRAS, and one time he had a double portion.

Back to Fireside: You recently relocated the restaurant from Kalona to North Liberty. Did you keep the same menu? We kept pretty much the same lunch menu and added an online to-go lunch menu. You order online, you pay online, and we’ll give you a pickup time and the food is ready for you. All the menu items are designed to travel well and/or reheat well. The dinner menu, we significantly increased the level and the quality, because we knew that we had the clientele here to be able to offer more higher-end steaks and entrees.

www.cibofusion.com 319 447 1414 / 685 Marion Blvd dress to impress / dress code enforced

What’s the most popular dish at Fireside? At lunch, the gourmet burgers and The Beast, a prime rib panini with Brie or blue cheese, caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms. At night, I would say one of our more popular dishes, other than prime rib, would be the Shrimp Rachel. It’s sauteed shrimp and smoked sausage on bucatini pasta, and we use a curried carrot bisque as a sauce base.

After having worked in so many restaurants, what’s the best thing about owning your own?

Friday, May 8, 2009 . m 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.

It’s bittersweet. It’s a lot of work, a lot of hours, a lot of sacrifice, but there’s so much more freedom in your decision-making and freedom in your menu. This menu is definitely a conglomeration of my past.

Phong Lan Vietnamese

Restaurant ANDREA DIETZENBACH

BODY BY PHONG LAN I’ve come up with a surefire way to get in shape for the upcoming summer swimsuit season. Not to be misleading. I’m not much of a swimsuit wearer, and I certainly don’t intend to blind anyone with the gleaming paleness of an exposed upper thigh. But I could stand to trim a few areas that are subject to the less-than-concealing garments summertime requires. My answer? I plan to eat at Phong Lan every day. Impossible, you say? Perhaps it’s less than practical. But the Vietnamese people are onto something. The menu at Phong Lan is completely overrun by fresh and healthful foods. A quick glance at the menu tells you all you need to know: shrimp, rice noodles, squid, bok choy, tofu, bean sprouts. I highly recommend the spring rolls. A delicate rice paper wrapped around beautiful plump shrimp, pork, fresh vegetables, cilantro and rice noodles. You feel healthier just looking at the little masterpieces.

Recycle at Casey’s Support Flood Relief

The specialty of the house are the noodle soup bowls or ‘Pho,’ ‘Hu Tieu’ and ‘Mi.’ You get a giant bowl of hot broth filled with vegetables, seafood, meats and rice or egg noodles. Served on the side is a plate of bean sprouts, cilantro and lime to stir into the soup to your individual taste. Halfway through my bowl of soup, I was full. Yet I wasn’t Burger King full. I felt satisfied and surprisingly refreshed. If this is the sacrifice it takes to get ready for summer, I’m willing to do it. — ANDREA

BETTER THAN BOOKS? While I don’t understand how people survive without reading, I don’t want to alienate nonreaders. My answer? Movies. Everyone likes movies. And so many books are eventually made into movies. They can see the movie. I’ll read the book. The trick is to find movies where “based on the book” is actually true. Here’s my top 10 book and movie combos:

“TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD” by Harper Lee Atticus Finch is without a doubt one of my favorite characters in any book ever written. Gregory Peck, who portrays Atticus in the movie, is amazing.

“TWILIGHT” by Stephenie Meyer If you don’t know about this book and movie, you’ve been living under a rock, and there is nothing I can do to help you.

“THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA” by Lauren Weisberger I know. I know. Not exactly a literary classic, but the book was entertaining, as was the movie.

JD Schlotterback 377-9874 Marion Office jschlotterback@ iowarealty.com

“COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO” by Alexandre Dumas This is not an easy read but well worth the effort. The movie, released in 2002, leaves out some important parts (which is not surprising given the length of the book) but adheres to the major plot points. “THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL” by Philippa Gregory

Snuggie

The book was saucy and scandalous to say the least, and the movie, starring Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Eric Bana, is equally saucy and scandalous.

Slumber Party

The most recent movie version was released in 2005, but I recommend the British Broadcasting Corp. made-for-TV version starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

“PRIDE AND PREJUDICE” by Jane Austen

with

“ABSOLUTE POWER” by David Baldacci The book is action-packed. As for the movie, can you really go wrong with Clint Eastwood and Ed Harris?

No, we don’t want to sleep with you, but we do want to relive those junior high days. Truth or dare, board games, video games, pizza in the “perfect basement” at Piano Lounge. Everything’s better in a Snuggie!

“HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG” by Andre Dubus Both the movie and the book are absolutely beautiful and depressing.

“LITTLE CHILDREN” by Tom Perrota The movie was released in 2006 and stars Kate Winslet. There are a number of glaring differences between the book and the movie (for example, the endings are completely different), but both were so good I had to include “Little Children” on my list. “A CIVIL ACTION” by Jonathan Harr The fact that I am an attorney may make me a little biased, but I thought both the book and the movie were compelling dramas. The first and last thing you’ll remember after seeing Blue Island Tribe is their unparalleled energy and intoxicating sound. Think Sublime, No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers and 311. But a vibe that’s all their own. James Frey (lead vocals), Brandon Clark (bass/vocals), Kelly Powers (guitar), Garrett Theilking (saxophone/vocals), John Schminke (guitar/vocals) and Mike Schminke (drums) formed Blue Island Tribe in the early 2000s while attending the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Now the band lives all over the place including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Des Moines, Dubuque and Cedar Falls. Since getting together in college, the band has released four albums, most recently “The 5 Hits of Ecstasy.” For the record, the inspiration behind the title of the latest album was not derived from drugs. It’s a nod to the group’s infectious sound. “The 5 Hits of Ecstasy” was recorded in the summer of 2008 immediately after the band returned from an overseas tour in Japan and South Korea. Since then, Blue Island Tribe has been busy. This past March they played three showcases at South By Southwest, a music festival in Austin, Texas. In January, the band’s photos were published in “Billboard,” “Pollstar” and “Radio & Records” magazines. They will tour all summer and plan to enter into the studio in the fall to record another album.

Over the years the band has developed a very “tight” live sound. Blue Island Tribe often showcases their lead players: John Schminke, the baby-faced lead guitar player, and Thielking, on the sax. The two trade solos, building off each other and the rest of the band to create a soulful and vibrant sound that can only be created by musicians that are wholly in sync with one another. For example, one of the songs on their latest album was partially written on the fly at a show in South Korea. The music to “March On” was composed before they left the country to tour overseas, but the lyrics hadn’t been written yet. Then lead singer James Frey decided to improvise the lyrics. The resulting chorus line reads, “March On, March On, This Is Our Movement. March On, March On, It’s Time To Represent. March On, March, On, You Can Feel It In Your Soul. March On, March On, As The Music Takes Control.” The lyrics immediately struck a chord with the rest of the band members, and after watching a videotape of the show, they wrote down the lyrics and developed them into what they are now.
