I’m just

SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

Full disclosure. I am not a member of what, up until this week, was known as Access Iowa. Nor was I member of the Next Generation Commission. Also, no one bribed me, in the form of coffee or scones (although I really like the apricot ones from Brewed Awakenings. Wink. Wink.) to write this. I’m just giving a shout out where a shout out is due. Major kudos go to the members of both groups and Shannon Meyer and the rest of the folks at the Cedar Rapids Chamber Commerce who saw an opportunity to take the mission and goals of both groups — to create a vibrant young work force — to the next level by combining them under one name and one entity — the Chamber. They officially merged Tuesday night at the Corridor PM Exchange. Members of each group are automatically members of the new organization.

Rapids. Access Iowa has always been guided by a board of volunteers. Dedicated. Yes. But still limited by the fact that they are just that — volunteers. Similarly, the Next Generation Commission was a group of volunteers. It was also a group without a permanent

home. The original group of seven was convened with the help of some of the city’s senior leadership and the Cedar Rapids Recovery & Reinvestment Coordinating Team. Last July, they accepted short-term positions with the intention to form a long-term committee through a traditional and open application process at a later date. As things are want to do, that plan changed. And even if I knew the details as to why, I wouldn’t bore you with them. The point is, while some things will stay the same, traditional events like Siren Wednesday, Get on Boards and pub crawls aren’t going anywhere. Both groups can now look to the future in a new way now that they are one entity.

They can also look to the future with a new name, ImpactCR. I, for one, think that the name says a lot about the goal of the A transition team had been meeting since March to group. And now, under the wing of the Chamber, ImpactCR make sure that, well, the transition went smoothly. is poised to achieve that goal in a way they perhaps weren’t before. The Chamber can lend resources, such as a staff person While the two groups have much in common partially dedicated to this group, that neither had before the — namely their desire to create a community where merger. young adults want to live, work and play — they have different histories. The news releases for the exchange and unveiling warned us to Brace for Impact on Tuesday. It was the brainchild of Tom Anderson, a lifelong Cedar Rapidian, who had recently moved back to Cedar Rapids from Saint Louis and wanted to provide programming and events for young adults to keep them here.

The Next Generation Commission was formed less than one year ago, in response to the Floods of 2008. Cedar Rapids resident Christian Fong, a member of the statewide Generation Iowa Commission, brought the group of young adults together to lend their perspective to the reconstruction of post-flood Cedar

IOWA CITY— Iowa City is considering raising the cost of parking meters by 25 cents per hour. And if you think it’s cheaper to just pay the ticket, think again. The proposal includes an increase of fines for parking meter violations by $5. Oh, and, by the way, the fines escalate. A first offense would get you a warning, a second would cost $5, a third $10 and so on, with a maximum fine of $25. Records would be wiped clean every six months after the first violation. Don’t like this proposal? Tell the Iowa City Council — they’re discussing whether to have a public hearing on June 2 for the proposed changes.

A day to remember

CEDAR RAPIDS — In Cedar Rapids, there are two Memorial Day programs Monday, May 25. At Veterans Memorial Park, the New Horizons Band will begin playing at 9:30 a.m., and the program will begin at 10 a.m. If it rains, head into the Veterans Memorial Stadium concourse for the ceremony. Also, at 11:30 a.m. that same day, there is a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at Czech National Cemetery, 2200 C St. SW in Cedar Rapids. The rain location is the lower level of Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2808 Schaeffer Dr. SW.

Gov. Chet Culver signed a $830 million plan to upgrade the state’s infrastructure to rebuild after last year’s epic flood. The University of Iowa will receive $100 million for recovery and Linn County will receive $165 million, which will help rebuild fire stations in Palo and Elkader. Gov. Culver has named the plan “I-Jobs,” arguing that it will create thousands of jobs over the next three years.

Color and pattern are the name of Shantelle’s game. Oh, and originality, too.

Shantelle Smrha, Cedar Rapids

Senior Analyst, Contract Development @ AEGON Financial Partners

What she’s wearing

Black Tee: Mossimo for Target Dress: Forever 21

What she says

Amazing outfits are all about balance. My favorite casual look is to pair a simple tee and jeans with a pair of metallic or patterned flats and a few layered bangles. I carry this same type of look over to the dressier side of my wardrobe, too. I like to layer a solid black tee under a bold patterned top or dress. Adding just a pop of color or pattern, whether it’s through your shoes, top or dress, can add complexity and interest to a plain look, balancing everything out.

YOU SHOULD MEET

I could feel the color drain from my face as my stomach somersaulted. The light panel glowed red — two minutes to go. As the light switched to green and the door opened, I looked over one last time to catch the excitement on my mom’s face. Seconds later, we were both falling through the sky at 120 miles per hour. Wind roaring in my ear with a loud whoosh, I immediately positioned myself in the free-fall position — head back, hips forward, feet tucked toward my butt. Breathe. The thrill of the free fall felt crisp, like I had just splashed my face with ice-cold water — but multiplied — and I tried to catch my breath.

Flying high Mom said as we pulled up to Paradise Skydiving’s jump site at the Vinton Memorial Airport — little more than two hangers and a landing strip. “It’s like they consider it suicide or something, jumping out of a plane.” In just over a minute, I dropped from 14,000 feet to 5,000. Feeling Randy slap me three times on my hip, I grabbed the orange handle and pulled. Relief mixed with the adrenaline of the free fall as the parachute opened, snapping me upright.

Bartender @ Pints

How long have you been a bartender at Pints? Since we opened, so about three months. Before that, I bartended at another bar for nine months.

What’s the best thing about working at Pints?

Probably my co-workers and my boss. We just have a lot of fun when we work, and it’s really laid back.

You have 20 specialty drafts on tap: Which one is the best? That’s a tough one. I don’t know. My favorite is probably Blue Moon.

Pints is a BYOF bar — what does that mean? BYOF is bring your own food. We have menus from all the local restaurants in here, and probably about half of them will deliver to the bar. They have their cards on the tables with their phone numbers.

There are lot of bars in downtown Iowa City — what draws people to Pints?

I think a lot of people come in because of the bartenders. A lot of the bartenders worked at other bars before, so they have old customers that come in here to see them. A lot of people have become friends with my boss and they come in for him. — ANNE

A THOUSAND THANK YOUS This week, I got a real date for dinner. Well, technically speaking, my husband is legally and contractually obligated to have dinner with me.

They were completely attentive and I don’t think I’ve ever been thanked that many times on my way out of a restaurant.

For starters, we ordered the Boursin Cheese, lightly breaded and flash-fried with mixed greens, crostini and fig chutney. The cheese was a nice, light spread for the buttery, crisp crostini. I ordered one of the specials for dinner: Chicken Ravioli. Tender ravioli pasta was stuffed We got to the restaurant for an early dinner and scored with roasted chicken breast, topped with fresh pesto, a table right away. The dining area is small with a lot of roasted squash and artichokes. The pasta was full of tables packed together. But you don’t feel like sardines. flavor and not too heavy. To the contrary, it’s a dining experience where you’re surrounded by shiny, happy people that are there for the Atlas is all about using fresh, local flavors in season, same purpose: to have a good time and eat great food. and being gracious. If I’m feeling short on thank yous, I intend to stop by. The staff at Atlas is among the friendliest I’ve met. It was one of those Saturday nights when the weather is warm, the sun is shining and the streets of downtown Iowa City are buzzing with energy. Atlas is located right in the action on Iowa Avenue.

BOOKTALK {

Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.

ANIMAL. VEGETABLE. DELICIOUS. If there’s anything I love as much as books, it’s food. So it goes without saying that I really like books about food. I’m also kind of nerdy, so if books about food also contain a research or possibly a public policy component, I’m thrilled. Enter “ANIMAL,

VEGETABLE, MIRACLE: A YEAR OF FOOD LIFE” by Barbara Kingsolver.

Kingsolver, her husband and their two daughters move from Tuscon, Ariz., to a farm in the Appalachians where they make a family pact to eat only food that they can obtain in their own county for an entire year. So, no bananas from Mexico, avocados

from Texas or even dairy products from Wisconsin. They don’t plan for this eating experiment to be a painful weight-loss scheme, though, so they all agree on certain “cheats.” Coffee for dad, etc. As everything begins in spring, this is when their local eating experiment begins. Subsisting on lots of greens, asparagus, chickens and eggs during those first few months makes tomatoes in June a reason for celebration. Kingsolver is a vivid writer and the natural world is her forte, so be prepared to drool over her tomatoes. The animal component of “Animal,

Vegetable, Miracle” is even more educational. Chicken butchering and turkey sex were both new topics to me. Adding to the main story of a year in the life of eating locally, Kingsolver’s college-aged daughter and her husband write brief essays for each chapter. And the book just wouldn’t be as noteworthy without the recipes: pumpkin soup, homemade mozzarella, sweet-and-sour sauce. Mmmm. I grew up in a family where tomatoes recommend it to anyone who has felt grew in the garden and strawberry the happiness that is an armload of season was a reason to celebrate, so kale from the farmers market. part of the reason I liked the book so well may have to do with its — CAITLIN personal appeal. Nonetheless, I happily

Formed when three-piece acoustic group Adagio crossed paths with bassist Steve DeForest in a recording session for common friends, they quickly called childhood friend and Party Mix Specialist drummer James Boeding to join the group. The only spot left was for a lead singer. Following a karaoke trip to Chappy’s Lounge, vocalist Jenni Lisenbee was added and the band was complete. So. What makes them different? “We’ve established ourselves as somewhat of a Las Vegas-style dance band,” Larry says. “We play a wide variety of music that has

morphed into a musical journey, complete with coordinated wardrobe changes for each set. One thing we try to look for in a new song is its dance potential as we definitely are focused on being a band that our fans can come out and dance to all show long. Now our sets are organized by eras so we have to be very selective in which songs make the list.” The first set consists of ’70s funk and disco and segue into ’80s dance. The second set moves to top 40 and country. Finally, the third set is a straight-ahead rock set. While essentially focusing on covers, the band is just now putting the final touches on their first original track, despite having all written songs before joining this particular group. — JUSTIN
