SAYIN’ {
Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.
Everyone around here remembers exactly what they were doing and where they were during those epic six days in June 2008. In that way, last summer’s floods are to the Corridor as events like landing on the moon and JFK’s assassination are to the nation. To others outside our area, the events of last summer may not seem as monumental as space travel and a president’s assassination. But those six days are ones that will endure in the memories of those who lived through them.
When photographer Liz Martin and I left Time Check we headed to the Czech Village before getting back on I-380, the only route across the river at that point. I was with her when she shot that iconic photograph used in the next day’s paper with the headline Epic Surge. I was also at Mercy Medical Center the next day when the last ambulance pulled away with the last patient and the hospital staff was able to heave a sigh of relief after a successful evacuation. And once the waters receded and we’d taken stock of our losses, I was at the FEMA and SBA satellite trailers talking to people who’d lost everything and were still able to joke as they patiently waited in lines in 90 degree heat. The images from those experiences will never leave me. But more importantly than where we were when the flood came was where we were when the floodwaters were gone.
Like everyone else I have my own stories. As a reporter for The Gazette at that time, I interviewed Melanie Primasing on Wednesday, June 11, as she packed up every As a community, we have been there for each other. last scrap of candy and piece of furniture at Simply Divine, the candy shop at the corner of I’ve loved Cedar Rapids for years, and always plan to make First Street and Third Avenue SE. The next day, I stood in hip waders at the corner of 10th Street and O Avenue in the Time Check neighborhood just after the water overcame the levee. I watched, and cried, as rescue workers went after and brought back a 90-year-old man and his pet poodle.

Located by Sycamore Mall on the southeast side of Iowa City, Jimmy Jack’s Rib Shack barbecue is the bomb.com. Atlas
Ever since I was a student at the University of Iowa, I have loved Iowa City in the summertime and the pool at City Park. The pool is located in the middle of the park and is surrounded by huge, beautiful trees, grass and everything that reminds you of summer. If you want to catch some rays and don’t want to be bothered with kids, go from noon to 1 p.m. where it is adult lap swim. The pool is only used for laps, but if you want to lay out next to the blue water, it’s not a problem. My only wish is that they would bring back the snow cone cart.
I love food and good drinks, and Atlas has them both. Atlas is the birthplace of the best “burritos” anywhere. My friends from Chicago will make a special trip to visit Atlas when in town because their buffalo chicken wrap can never be duplicated. A tortilla is filled with crispy chicken, mashed potatoes, celery, blue cheese and topped with fried onion strings; how could that be bad? Also, the mojitos are the best in the area. Lunch: get the half burrito, side salad combo. Dinner: get the BBQ Shrimp Voodoo appetizer, Iowa pork tenderloin for an entree and the creme brulee for dessert.

The other ice cream stores in Iowa City do not compare to this mom-and-pop ice cream shop located on the east side. The ice cream is made in this small, no frills shop where there is always a variety of flavors to taste. My favorite? Monster cookie. Full of candies, chocolate, oatmeal, peanut butter and everything else that makes up the infamous cookie, it’s a party in your mouth. RIVERenaissance
Various times, Thursday (06/11) to Saturday (06/13), Cedar Rapids, www. downtowncr.org
What better way to remember last year’s historic flooding than by enjoying a series of flood anniversary events organized by the Cedar Rapids Downtown District. Be one of the first to see “Resilience: The Spirit of Humanity,” a flood documentary done by MVP Studios, on Thursday night at the U.S. Cellular Center. A community time capsule containing memories of the flood also will be sealed that evening. Then on Friday, stop by Greene Square Park over the lunch hour for the Sweet Reunion (including free dessert!) to celebrate all the businesses that have reopened since the flood. Floodstock kicks off at noon on Saturday and includes nine live musical acts, including Hairbangers Ball—a big-hair ’80s cover band from Chicago — and a professional sand sculptor who will turn 50 tons of sand into a rock band tribute to Floodstock. These are just the headlining events. Check out page 12 for the full RIVERenaissance schedule.

Ready, set, run... the flood, that is. Follow the seven-mile course that traces the flood’s path in and around downtown Cedar Rapids. If you’re not feeling up to all seven miles, then the 2.5-mile route is for you. They will be flood photos, facts, statistics and high water marks so participants can visualize how high the water got where they are running. All proceeds from the event go to flood relief through the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.
The University of Iowa has plans to commemorate the anniversary of last year’s flooding on their campus, too. Stop by the Old Capitol Museum between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a variety of special events. A formal program will be held at 12:15 p.m. on the west steps of the museum (overlooking the Iowa River), during which UI President Sally Mason and other guests will make remarks. YOU SHOULD MEET
RUN TO RECOVERY Director of Workforce Initiatives @ Priority One
Last summer, weeks after the water from that devastating June flood had receded, Kari Lammer was having lunch with a couple of co-workers and talking about training for an upcoming half-marathon in Des Moines. “I just said to them, ‘The flood covered 10 square miles — that’d be a really interesting training route, to run along where the water went, and see how far it went, and the different neighborhoods it affected’,” she says. Then it occurred to her that other people might be interested in touring the flood path on foot, too. So, along with friend and co-worker Kathleen Legg, she launched Run the Flood, a 7-mile run that will take participants along the perimeter of last summer’s flood. The race will start in downtown, and then go through Time Check, past Taylor Elementary, into the Czech Village and through the Oak Hill Jackson neighborhood before returning downtown. Alternatively, a 2.5-mile walk will take participants through both sides of downtown and Little Bohemia. “My original intent was to see where the flood went, but we know that’s not feasible for everyone and we really want this to be a community event, so we wanted to make sure that we had a component that allowed everyone to feel like they could be a part of it,” Kari says.

Kari is thrilled by the community response to the run, which is affiliated with the Downtown District’s RIVERenaissance festival recognizing the one-year anniversary of the flood, but she’s not surprised by it. That community excitement and support is exactly the sort of thing that made her and her husband want to move to Cedar Rapids in the first place back
“It’s so easy to get involved in this community,” Kari says. “If you show up at one thing, you’re instantly welcomed in and recruited to be a part of this group, or do this thing. There are a lot of networking groups, a lot of church groups, a lot of ways to get connected.” Kari says those networking groups — particularly the Eastern Iowa Human Resources Association, the
Professional and Technical Diversity Network and ImpactCR (formerly Access Iowa), along with the connections she’s made as Director of Workforce Initiatives at Priority One made it possible to plan Run the Flood with little prior event planning or fundraising experience.
“This is going to be an educational event,” Kari says. “We see this as a way to celebrate and show the progress that’s been made, but also to show the need that’s left in the community and raise some money to support that need.”
Rebecca Jacobs, who coordinates Mercy Medical Center’s annual Especially for You Race Against Breast Cancer 5K, helped Kari and Kathleen put together a timeline for event planning and promotion, while Stephanie Holub, marketing director for Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa, helped them put together sponsorship packages and pitches.
Organizing the run itself has already been an educational undertaking for Kari. She picked up event planning and fundraising experience, of course, but she also became even more familiar with Cedar Rapids, discovering new neighborhoods and seeing firsthand the spirit of volunteerism that’s present here.
Meanwhile, Kari made the Run the Flood route a regular part of her training regimen.
“I feel like there’s too much at stake to ever consider leaving this community now,” she says. “I feel like I’m really a part of it now. I love it here.”
“It’s a very familiar route for me now. As soon as the weather started to get a little nicer this spring, there were kids playing out in their yards, and some of those kids are playing next to houses that haven’t been touched yet, and when I run by the kids, I always think to myself, ‘We’re running for you!,’ ” Kari says. “It’s such a sad situation; their neighborhoods are gone right now.” Throughout the run, markers on trees and telephone poles will indicate how high the floodwaters rose, and maps, flood statistics, and photographs from Gazette photojournalists will be displayed along the 2.5-mile walking route.

Did you know?
Kari started running in December 2007 after a friend raved to her about how much fun she had running a marathon. Now an avid runner, Kari’s completed two half-marathons: Des Moines in October 2008 and Madison in May 2009.
What she can do for you
As director of workforce initiatives at Priority One, she can connect you with community resources to help your company grow, whether that’s connecting current employees to training opportunities, or selling the Cedar Rapids community to young professionals thinking about moving to the area. ANNE KAPLER LIVES IN CEDAR RAPIDS AND WORKS IN IOWA CITY. SHE LIKES GOING FOR EARLY MORNING RUNS THROUGH HER SOUTHEAST NEIGHBORHOOD. NONE OF THEM EVEN COME CLOSE TO 7 MILES LONG.

You can learn a lot at a family reunion, “Did you know that an antelope bloats mere minutes after shooting it?” “No! Tell me more!” It can be difficult to sift out the quality information from the rest of the chatter but this particular reunion proved to be fruitful.
We started with Shellfish Fines Herbs, savory chunks of king lobster, shaved vegetables and crème fraîche. It was cool and delectable. My entree was Scallop Au Poivre, perfectly cooked scallops surrounded by fingerling potato and short rib tortellini. My husband chose Filet Mignon Frites. Yeah, I know, steak again but this one rated at the very top of his list.
Aunts Suzanne and Carol had the scoop. Thanks to these two savvy travelers I learned all about a brand new restaurant in Iowa City. Chef at DC’s Riverwalk
All right Nate—what’s your fit in the world of DC’s Riverwalk and how long have you been there?
I’m the Chef and Kitchen Manager. I’ve been with DC’s from the very beginning, which is going on three months now.
How old were you when introduced to the world of chop, butter and blend?
I’ve been in and out of the chef/ cooking world since I was 14. I’ve always had fun cooking and thought, why not get paid for doing what you love?
DC’s is the newest restaurant to open in downtown CR. What’s their flavor?
DC’s is known for variety in menu — from the basic soup/salad/sandwich to the seafood and steak selection. The daily specials often reflect that
1650 First Avenue • Cedar Rapids
variety, and people appreciate the selection.
What’s the thing about cooking that makes you tick (good tick, not bad)?
Cooking is a window into other cultures — experiencing influence and applying it where you can. I can come up with something entirely new from simply adding a bit of my own creativity. I compare it to signing your name to a painting or sculpture you’ve created.
Kick off your weekend with your friends at

BOOKTALK {
Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.
LET’S GET ROWDY Throw a bull-riding cowboy smack in the middle of Paris and you get a hilarious comic novel that will make you laugh out loud. “Rowdy in Paris” by Tim Sandlin was truly hilarious. It’s all about a not-so-great bull rider named Rowdy Talbot who at long last wins a bull-riding competition. His joy over the big win is cut short when his prize buckle is stolen by a pair of French women who helped Rowdy celebrate his victory. Rowdy heads to Paris to retrieve his coveted prize. Once Rowdy gets to Paris, the adventures, surprises and non-
stop fun begins. Rowdy is amazed and flummoxed by French culture. He is especially turned off by the fact that it takes four espresso cups to equal one cup of coffee. Throughout the novel, Rowdy reveals 12 “Self Evident Truths.” These “Self Evident Truths” offer a glimpse as to just how hilarious “Rowdy in Paris” truly is:

THE REST OF THE STORY — COURTESY OF GREENBRIER
The world over, cowboys are the envy of honest men and heart’s desire of adventuresome women. ● You can’t tell a virgin by her face. ● You can’t hit every asshole you run into. ● If you don’t stretch regular, the falls will break you. ● You can never knock on wood too often in a tunnel. ● The only thing worse than finding out you were wrong when you prejudged a person’s character is to find out you were right. ● If you sleep with enough people, sooner or later, you’ll fall for one of them.

You only get a certain number of knockouts in life, before you go away and don’t make it all the way back. ● Love is more important than saving your culture. ● Never make assumptions about foreign women. ●
Some readers may scorn “Rowdy in Paris” because it is not up to their literary standards. But if you are looking for a good laugh, “Rowdy in Paris” is a must read. — Natalie

Matthew Kane has been playing music all While only a quarter of the songs are of his life. originals, the band is working to add new pieces every day. A native of Cedar Rapids who was raised in Roanoke, Va., Kane moved back to “We pick cover songs that fit us,” Kane Cedar Rapids in 1990 to form a country said. “If I can’t put my self in a song, if band not confined to only country music. I can’t live it, I don’t sing it. . . . We push to make sure that every minute of our Named after his 1963 Chevy Corvair show is fun. At almost every show I have van, Greenbrier is a country band with people come up and say that they don’t credentials, opening for such country like country music but they like what we acts as Sugarland, Lone Star and Neal do. It makes me feel good when I know McCoy as well as legendary performers I’m doing it right.” like Charlie Daniels Band, 38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd. — JUSTIN
