Saturday we (being the Hoopla Crew) will be at the Cedar I’d like to meet the person who coined the phrase “the lazy days of summer.” Lazy days? Since when? Rapids Downtown Farmer’s Market enjoying the early morning hubbub, fresh produce, cool crafts and tasty treats along with thousands of our dearest friends. (Yes. I feel like it’s already been a super busy season, and technically summer hasn’t even begun yet. That’s you.) Sunday (which is also Father’s Day. Love ya This week also marks the beginning of another Cedar Rapids honey) is the first official day of summer. The longest day of the year, also known as summer staple. That’s right. If you didn’t already figure it out from our cover, it’s Freedom Festival time. the summer solstice. I don’t know about you. But my summer isn’t marked by any astronomical definition or by lazy days.
Many locals have come to know and love this annual festival. I’m always surprised though by the number of people who live in surrounding areas who have never taken advantage of all the events jam-packed into the two weeks leading up to the Fourth of July.
For me, it begins when somehow, without me meaning to, every waking moment seems It may be called the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival. But it’s to be filled with one outdoor event or another. Only two weeks into June and I feel not like they check your residency paperwork at the gate. It’s come one come all. And if you never have before, you should. like a lot has already happened. Not sure where to start? Erin McNeill, a soon-to-be senior at We were on vacation for the first two weeks of Cornell College, has joined the Hoopla staff for the summer, June and missed a lot. Celebration of Freedom Fireworks
What could be more fun on a hot summer evening than watching daredevil acrobatics performed on the water? The Five Seasons Ski Team will be performing three special shows in addition to their weekly Thursday shows during the Freedom Festival. As a recreational skier myself, I’m really looking forward to checking out the feats to be performed by these aquatic athletes. This nationally competitive team has been featured on ESPN and OLN, and touted acts include a ballet line, fourperson-high pyramids, barefooting and skiing 360 degrees around the boat.
I can’t wait to unleash my inner cowgirl and visit a scene straight out of a John Wayne film as the Wild West Weekend returns to Ushers Ferry Historic Village in Cedar Rapids this year after being flooded out last year. The Willi Territorial Rough Riders, a group comprised of Cowboy Action Shooters, Civil War re-enactors and Old West enthusiasts, will keep visitors on their toes with gunfights, robberies and the retelling of great tales from the Old West and Iowa history. A great way to celebrate Father’s Day, the Wild West Weekend will provide entertainment for all ages.
If you think hot-air balloons look cool floating through a sunny blue sky, just wait until you see them lit up and hovering just over the ground after dark. One of my favorite childhood memories was attending the Balloon Glow for the 1996 U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship when it was held near my hometown in the Missouri heartland, and I’m so excited to get to experience an event like this again. The U.S. Marine Corp Band will provide a musical backdrop for viewing the explosion of color offered by the balloons. The Freedom Fest Balloon Glow will be held on the lawn of historic Brucemore.
For me, parades are the quintessential patriotic celebration because they bring together the community and show off some of its best attributes – its people. This year’s Freedom Festival Parade theme is “We are One under the Red, White & Blue,” focusing on working and celebrating together as the city and region are rebuilt. There are nearly 100 entries for the parade, which will be emceed by KHAK’s Brain and Steele. As a horse enthusiast, the equestrian entries are always my favorites, but a lively marching band can always make me smile.
It just isn’t the Fourth of July without fireworks. Though I’m still adjusting to the idea that I can’t shoot off bottle rockets in my backyard (wish I’d known fireworks were illegal in Iowa before I moved here), I am definitely looking forward to watching the big boomers explode across the sky. This year’s Freedom Fireworks will be held on the Kirkwood Community College campus. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs and patriotic spirit to watch the sparks fly.
Five Seasons Ski Team Shows will be held Tuesday, June 23, Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4, at 7 p.m. at Ellis Park. Free.
Wild West Weekend Ushers Ferry, June 20 and 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. $8 for adults, $3 for children 3 to 14.
Freedom Festival Balloon Glow At Brucemore in Cedar Rapids. June 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is free with a Freedom Fest Button.
Freedom Festival Parade Will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, at Second Street in Cedar Rapids. Admission is free.

Theatre Cedar Rapids is hosting a reunion of sorts this weekend. “Disney’s High School Musical On Stage” is back with performances Thursday through Sunday. The show was held for three sold-out weekends last July, and much of last summer’s cast returned for this weekend’s performances.
Just after the one-year anniversary of the flood, a local venue is hosting a unique healing experience incorporating art and spiritual development. “The ART of Healing” opens this Saturday at CornerHouse Gallery and Frame in Cedar Rapids. The exhibit features fractural geometry by artists Ashayana and Azahyana Deane and excerpts from their Kathara Bio-spiritual Healing Systems and their other work.

Patriotic assion p Ann Virden, 23, Marion
Community Relations Director @ Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival
Before she started working for the Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival, Ann Virden worried that she might get sick of red, white and blue. But as she kicks off her third festival as the Community Relations Director, Ann is proud to say she’s very fond of those colors. This year’s Freedom Festival runs from June 18 to July 4, and it promises to keep Ann very busy. At times, she’s on the clock from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. the next day. “If we are wiped out at the end of the day, we’re up and at it the next day and the next day,” she says. (Perhaps that’s what a little added patriotism can do.) But planning for those 17 days honestly keeps Ann — and the rest of the Freedom Festival staff — busy all year long. “A lot of people know what the Freedom Festival is, but a lot of people don’t know what we do,” she says. “It’s just nice to tell them what you do year-round. People are actually surprised at how much work goes into it.” Ann’s job starts to get “hectic” in the spring.
out to the 100 retail locations around the Corridor. And once you pick a button, you’ll notice it also comes with $100 worth of coupons to local businesses (thanks to Ann.) It’s the family-friendly, affordable aspect of the Freedom Festival that makes her most proud. But button management, if you will, is only one of Ann’s patriotic duties.
Avenue parking ramp while in high school and wondering who pulled off the event each year. “I thought, ‘How does this even get put together?’ I never realized I’d come to plan it.” Ann says so far it hasn’t gotten to her that she’s working when everyone else has the day off.
“Even though it’s a holiday and I’m working, it’s Each year, the Freedom Festival works with some as much fun,” she says. “It’s nice to see other 40 organizations to put together the 60 to 80 people enjoying the Fourth of July.” events that take place. That is perhaps the most ironic part of Ann’s job. “I recruit those organizations, figure out their She’s usually so busy during the fireworks that needs and figure out how their event fits into she doesn’t get to sit and enjoy the main event. the Festival,” she says. But she’s surely looking forward — as much as anyone — to the grand finale. She also manages the volunteer program, which includes more than 800 volunteers each festival. DID YOU KNOW “We have a cool volunteer program,” Ann says. Through corporate sponsorships, volunteer teams of 10 are able to earn $250 that they, in turn, donate to a local non-profit organization of their choice. “It’s nice to see so many people want to volunteer and give back to the community.”
“Crazy busy time starts at the beginning of May It’s a community Ann is certainly familiar with. and then especially after Memorial Day when the She’s a graduate of Cedar Rapids Washington buttons go on sale,” she says. The Balloon Glow (scheduled for June 25 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Brucemore) is Ann’s favorite Freedom Festival event.

For many years, I have heard tales of the Cork ’n Fork Deli ’n Grill. Apparently, Cork ’n Fork is true nostalgia for anyone who’s been around the Cedar Rapids area for a while, so I figured I’d better see what all the fuss was about. The restaurant is set back a bit on Mount Vernon Road. You’ll spot the sign right away, and then you see the inviting green awning. I’m not quite sure what purpose the little green tent serves, but I assume it just wouldn’t be Cork ’n Fork without it. Cork ’n Fork is casual dining at its best. It’s an intimate little deli with worn booths that have seen many rowdy crowds and fitful children. When you walk in, an enormous board with seemingly hundreds of sandwiches and salads greets you. I spent a few stunned moments just trying to wrap my head around the selection and finally chose whatever seemed unique. Scotty’s sandwich is a tenderloin on toasted rye bread with tomato, onions, avocado and mayo. I must admit I would have never considered putting avocado on a tenderloin, but it really worked. The fresh creaminess of the avocado lightened up the deep-fried goodness of the tenderloin, so it all balanced nicely. Of course, “nostalgia” for me means fried cheese balls, which were extra crisp and oozing melty cheese. Apparently “nostalgia” for my husband means a giant cheeseburger smothered in barbecue sauce and bacon. To each his or her own. We both enjoyed our dinner heartily.
Cork ’n Fork also serves breakfast, which I’m anxious to get back and try. The place has been around for years, and they definitely have the right formula figured out. Friendly service plus a vast and yummy menu equals success. — ANDREA

OSCAR WOW! I’ll confess, I’m often disappointed by National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winners. However, the irreverent, Pulitzer Prize-winning, “THE BRIEF WONDROUS LIFE OF OSCAR WAO,” by Junot Diaz, is not one of these disappointments. The unique street slang/Spanglish style of the novel’s voice makes it more than a good read. It’s a total immersion in the Dominican ghetto world of Oscar and his family: “Dude wore his nerdiness like a Jedi wore his light saber or a Lensman her lens. Couldn’t have passed for Normal if he’d wanted to.” Oscar is a 300-lb. Dominican nerd who wants desperately to fall in love. His weight, his love of Dungeons and

In 2003, friends Nick Ireland, Tom Rector and Nevin Nolte found themselves on Olive Street in their college town of Cedar Falls. Since it was their favorite place to meet and it is also where they started playing music, the three became The Olive Street Band, or OSB. Late in 2006, Matt Moss joined, and in 2009 Ben A’Hearn completed the group. OSB plays classic favorites from Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Dave Matthews Band, Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival and many more. The guys say they play covers that are “simple yet effective, songs that may be lost, but not forgotten.” If the crowd is enjoying the music, then they are doing their job.
“We put ourselves second, the crowd comes first,” Rector, the group’s percussionist, says. New to the local music scene, they are discovering what it is that sets them apart from other cover bands, and with time they hope to develop their sound, expand their library and branch to different genres and new styles of music. “OSB started out playing venues in small Iowa towns and still enjoys the intimacy those types of shows provide,” says Moss, the group’s bassist. In May of this year, OSB played one of its first big venues. The band played at Officer Tim Davis’ Benefit at the Chrome Horse in Cedar Rapids. It is those types of venues that the band finds most

rewarding. Not only does it help in getting their name out, but it also allows them to become directly involved in the Cedar Rapids community. Ultimately the goal is to improve with every performance, but OSB tries not to be too serious. OSB just has fun, no pressure.
