Add this valuable protection before its too late. Flooding can happen almost anywhere, any time. It might be the result of days of torrential rain. Or quickly melting snow. Or failed flood control structures like levees or dams. But the majority of property owners’ policies do not include coverage for losses caused by flooding. That’s why American Family Insurance is a participating company in the National Flood Insurance Program. There’s a 30-day wait before a flood insurance policy takes effect, making it important to consider this coverage now. So call or visit your American Family agent soon to see if you’re eligible to purchase this coverage. The weather won’t wait.

I’m just
SAYIN’ {
Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.
This issue is dedicated, at least in part, to the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Not because I’m a huge baseball fan. If there are any regular readers of this column, they know that I’m not a fan of any sport in particular. But I am a fan of experiencing different things. Which is why, if you haven’t been to a Kernels game for a silly reason like you don’t like baseball, you’re missing out.
Seriously. What’s not to love? I’m from a much smaller town a long way from here (like 4,000 miles). There’s a minor-league baseball team. But it’s not even close to the same experience. The park is more like one you’d find at a high school. Teeny tiny, with oldschool wood bleachers. And no one goes. No one except the announcer and the players host families, sometimes.
I’d rather enjoy a game at Veterans Memorial Stadium any day. It’s a true stadium. Not that I’m an expert, but walking through the gates for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised Sure. For some people, like the players, the to be greeted with a view much like that at larger ballparks. I Kernels’ games are about the baseball. OK. wasn’t around before the new stadium was built. But I’ve seen That’s not fair. There are lots of avid fans out pictures of the old one. And I know that what we have today there that go to watch the game. I’m just is a vast improvement. not one of them. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t go. And I always have a great time. I feel lucky that we have a team like the Kernels to cheer For me (and I’m guessing a lot of true fans), baseball is about the experience. It’s about the throngs of people waiting for the big steel gates to swing open. The aroma of hot dogs and popcorn that titillates your taste buds from the moment you open your car door. It’s about eating those classic ballpark goodies that just wouldn’t taste the same if you weren’t balancing them precariously on your lap and your thighs weren’t sticking to the plastic seats. It’s about the goofy and endearing games for fans on the field and in the stands. The crazy promotions. I love that you can bring a cheese wrapper to the game and get a ticket for free (with the purchase of another one, of course).

for here in Cedar Rapids. Not to mention the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and, of course, the good ol’ Hawkeyes at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
At the farmers market Saturday, a gal stopped by to offer some constructive criticism. There’s more to do in Cedar Rapids than bars and restaurants, she said. She asked that we do more to feature the other options. I pointed out that just two weeks ago we dedicated the cover to Run the Flood. And the week before that had been about farmers markets. So, while I’m biased, I think Hoopla does highlight all there is to do in town beyond the night life. The sports teams are part of that mix. Part of what we’re here to tell you about. And part of what makes living here so great.

Jessica Fergesen, 29, Cedar Rapids
SUMMER
Director of Marketing and Community Relations @ Cedar Rapids Kernels
Jessica Fergesen has been a baseball fan all of her life. For six seasons, she has been a significant part of the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Fergesen does a little bit of everything, including scheduling, writing, and purchasing radio, TV, newspaper and all other advertising in and out of season. She works special events like the hot stove banquet, college tournaments, high school games, charity walks, company picnics, expos and concerts. Occasionally, she will even participate in tarp pulls, setting up tables for concourse displays, changing out garbage and passing out giveaways at the gate.
and from Iowa,” Jessica says. “He asked that I come meet him in the broadcast booth and he told me about positions that were opening up at the end of the season in Cedar Rapids. We went to lunch the next day and the rest is history.” Throughout the years, her job has evolved from a sales representative to suite manager to community relations director to her current position as director of marketing and community relations.
“I love to see a big crowd cheering on the Kernels. It has been so much fun to help be a part of some great promotions we have done over the years,” Jessica says. “I will never forget the homecoming ceremony that was held at Vets in 2005 for the “The Kernels play 70 home games. However, an additional 60-plus 234th Signal Battalion. That ceremony is probably the most events take place at and around Veterans Memorial Stadium each memorable experience I have had at this stadium.” year,” Jessica says. “Many of these I schedule, lead or am a part of. On most game days, our work day starts at 9 a.m. and isn’t Planning for the Kernels season begins the minute the over until 10 or 11 p.m.” previous season ends. She up with ideas of how soon switched to another minor league team as a group sales to improve upon representative for the Lugnuts in Lansing, Mich. It wasn’t long the previous before home began calling her name. season.
The staff takes a two-day retreat to brainstorm ideas on how to make the Kernels experience more fun for the fans. New logos, theme nights and game time changes are created at these outings. After the retreat, they begin selling groups, suites, company outings, school and community nights and corporate sponsorships. There is only about six to seven months to get ready for the next season. “We try to create lifelong baseball fans,” she says. “I have never regretted my choice to leave Michigan and return home to Iowa.” — JUSTIN

Executive Chef/Owner @ Chef’s Table
What inspired you to become a chef?
what this space was to what it is. Plus, we had a lot of people coming by wanting to see the progress. Since it was winter, we thought it would be easier for them to get updates online.
The instant gratification of cooking. It doesn’t take a super long time to get pleasing results. I like cooking, and I like being able to change food from one thing What should diners expect when into another.
How would you describe your culinary style?
The cuisine here is classic French, but with a twist to be a little cleaner, a little more contemporary. We use more fresh citrus juice and vinegar, and less butter and cream, so that it’s not something where you eat a meal and get very tired. I want people to be energized when they eat. I have a seasonal menu, and every dish changes every day. It’s a constant evolution — kind of like how a musician never plays a song the exact same way twice.
What’s your favorite ingredient to work with?
Probably vegetables. I like the textures and shapes and variety I can work with. But I put the same effort and care into everything I cook.
What do you like to cook at home?

MUY DELICIOSO!
There are loads of “authentic” Mexican restaurants in our area. They all have stucco walls with oil paintings of deserts and they all have very similar menus. The true test is in which one delivers the tastiest and the fastest. Plaza Jalisco does well on both accounts. We were out and about in Coralville and had a hankerin’ for some chips and salsa, and lo and behold, there it was. Sort of. Plaza Jalisco is a little tricky to find. If we hadn’t been driving around some neighborhoods off Coral Ridge Avenue, we may never have found it.

The restaurant is located in a bland little strip mall. The interior is slightly less bland than the neighborhood. There isn’t a whole lot of character going on, but it’s open and airy with lots of windows and clean booths and tables. Staff is waiting at every turn to make sure you have plenty of beverages and a constant supply of chips and salsa. After we had ordered, it took less than 10 minutes for

our food to arrive. It was perplexingly quick service. On the one hand, I was hungry, and getting my food quicker than I could unwrap my silverware was appreciated. On the other hand, what sort of sorcery are they performing behind the scenes to make food that quickly? I had the steak and chicken fajitas, which were literally jumping off the hot skillet platter. The meat was tender and flavorful and there were plenty of sizzling green peppers, onions and tomatoes on the side. It was served with guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream and cheese. Everything was very fresh and the flavors were a good mix of sizzle and spice. And as an added bonus, they gave us a small bowl of ice cream at the end of our meal. Nothing makes me happier than surprise ice cream. Plaza Jalisco serves standard Mexican fare, but it’s well done, fresh and fast. Olé! — ANDREA

BOOKTALK {
Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.
THESE BASEBALL BOOKS ARE TIMELESS Tell-all baseball books are boring these days. Players are not saints and we know it. It wasn’t always this way. A few short decades ago, the public viewed athletes as golden boys. Want to know what helped shift the public perception? Read “BALL FOUR.” Former player Jim Bouton’s classic account of the New York Yankees and expansion Seattle Pilots will no longer surprise, but it will greatly entertain. The book is famous for breaking open the walls of the major league clubhouse. Bouton’s transformation from fireballer to knuckleballer fascinated me, and the quest of players to make and stay in the majors is compelling reading. Read it for a window into a crude and
hilarious clubhouse. Don’t read it if you like telling young’uns that the athletes of yesteryear were much better people than today’s crop. Spoiler: Mickey Mantle was not a boy scout. Fun Fact: Bouton invented Big League Chew. As long as we are tearing down old Yankee idols, try “JOE DIMAGGIO: THE HERO’S LIFE” by Richard Ben Cramer. What you already know: DiMaggio was a fantastic player, one of the best ever. What you might learn: DiMaggio was a fantastic jerk to people of all ages, including children. Another good baseball read is
WINNING AN UNFAIR GAME” by
Michael Lewis about the (then) new numbers-based philosophy toward scouting championed by Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s. Can Ivy League guys better evaluate players than classic “baseball men”? Um, yes. With “Moneyball” showing that intelligence is another route into professional sports, pickup mathletics are on the rise at public parks everywhere. If you like “Moneyball,” Lewis also wrote
“THE BLIND SIDE: EVOLUTION OF A GAME.” Read it now and follow the NFL
career of rookie Michael Oher. The book chronicles his remarkable life and high school football career while dissecting the workings of the offensive line in football.
