SAYIN’ {
Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.
It makes me sad when people say there’s nothing to do around here. Sort of in a crazy you-just-insulted-my-firstborn kind of way. I get really upset. Other than the fact that it’s simply not true, I don’t know exactly why it affects me the way it does. The only conclusion I’ve come to is that I feel the need to defend this home I’ve chosen. Like a mama bear and her cub, I feel protective of this place. I’ve lived other places. So I know that other green grass isn’t really so lush up close. Plus I didn’t grow up here. And though I came here for school, that’s not why I came back. I didn’t move here for a job or a relationship either. I moved here because there was something about Cedar Rapids and the corridor area that spoke to me. I’ve often said this area gets under your skin. Which isn’t a very poetic or pretty way of describing what I mean, but it works better than another metaphor I’ve heard, a velvet noose. But, beyond the fact that I feel protective of this place, my hackles are also raised at that oft-quoted complaint because it’s totally bogus. OK. Duh. We are not Chicago. And yes. I love visiting that city and others as much as the next person. But there are plenty of things that make Cedar Rapids a great place to live. Take Classics at Brucemore, which I went to for

the first time last weekend. Pack a picnic. Watch a play. All under the stars. On the lawn of a mansion that’s a National Trust Historic Site. When you go, you’ll feel silly, like I did, for not taking advantage of this event sooner. If you didn’t go last weekend, you still have a chance this weekend. Go. Fifteen dollars well spent. If you’ve never been to the estate. Again. Not to sound like a broken record, you’re missing out. Brucemore says its mission is “to engage the public in the history, traditions, resources and ongoing preservation of Brucemore for the enrichment of the community.” Its Web site says they want the community to consider Brucemore its home. In the next few weeks there’s tons of opportunities to go “home.” Check out the outdoor children’s theatre “The Princess Who Wouldn’t Wear Pink” July 22 to 25. Then August 1 is Bluesmore and the following weekend, August 6 to 8, is Cabaret in the Courtyard. All year there are garden shows, holiday open houses, children’s activities, garden walks, plant sale, concerts, lectures, workshops and educational programs. Plus, did you know that the grounds — gorgeously landscaped gardens — are open to the public — for free — during the day? Go wander or ponder. So, if you don’t take advantage of local gems like Brucemore, I don’t want to hear you say there’s nothing to do around here. Just zip it.

IOWA CITY — Did you miss The Nadas at the Java House with Iowa Public Radio’s Java Blend July 10? There are still two chances to catch the show. The Nadas’ performance will air on KSUI 91.7 FM or WSUI 910 AM July 25 at 11 p.m. and July 26 at 2 p.m.
On the tracks
WASHINGTON D.C. — Two of Iowa’s congressmen are encouraging federal transportation officials to approve stimulus funding for a Chicago-Quad Cities-Iowa City passenger rail line. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, and Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, called the rail line “an essential addition to the Midwest Regional Rail System.” According to a 2008 Amtrak feasibility study, the Chicago-Quad Cities section would cost $22.7 million to improve track conditions. The Quad Cities-Iowa City section would cost $32.5 million.

MARION — Roundabouts, mixed-use development and green space are part of a new vision for downtown Marion. The concept would direct through-traffic onto Sixth Avenue, making Seventh Avenue more appealing for walking, dining and shopping, said the
city director of planning and development. Four public meetings are scheduled to gain community input on the project: Tuesday (7/28) 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the American Legion and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Depot in Marion Square Park, Wednesday (7/29) 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Marion Public Library and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Campbell Steele Gallery in downtown Marion. YOU SHOULD MEET
YOU SHOULD MEET
Mary Frieden, 30, North Liberty Executive Director @ Summer of the Arts
If ever anyone writes the story Mary Frieden’s life, they have to include the shoes. Physical shoes, the kind you find in a mall, were part of what brought Mary to the Cedar Valley. And shoes of the metaphorical variety are what keep her here. Mary talks about wearing many shoes the way most do about hats. And these days, Mary wears a lot of shoes as the Executive Director of the Summer of the Arts, a series of events held each year from May to August in Iowa City, including art and jazz festivals, concert and movie series and a fundraiser.
What she can do for you Want to volunteer for any of the Summer of the Arts Festivals? Mary’s always looking for new people to help out. “We want fresh faces, people who love art and culture and want to learn to take on those roles others in the community have played.” Find out more at www. summerofthearts.org

Mary grew up in an artistic household in the San Francisco Bay area, with a mother who worked as a painter and who encouraged her children to pursue their own abilities. Mary pursued hers to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion before a visit to a friend convinced her to set roots in Eastern Iowa.
For almost two years now, Mary has served as the one and only full-time employee for the Summer of the Arts, doing fundraising, marketing, human resources, volunteer management, T-shirt folding, handling sponsors, organizing port-a-potties and everything in between.
“It was the perfect mid-sized city. Right in the middle of everything,” Mary says. “And it was close to five malls.” During the summer, Mary doesn’t find herself at the mall quite as often, as she works with the five events under the Summer of the Arts umbrella (the Iowa Arts Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, Friday Night Concert Series and Free Movie Series came together in 2005. Sand in the City, a fundraiser for the other events, is new this year). But Mary doesn’t do it all alone. The individual festivals retain creative control (translation: no she cannot bring in your favorite band), and a veritable army of volunteers “make everything work. They run like a machine.”
It’s work that she calls her “dream job.”
And her favorite part is watching it all come together.
“It was just the perfect job for me,” Mary says. “A perfect fit.”
“The first Friday Night Concert Series I stood over the crowd at the Sheraton and saw thousands. Kids covered
the playground,” Mary says. “Seeing that makes everything worthwhile.” It’s the people in those crowds that Mary sees as the reason for Summer of the Arts. “We need to build our neighborhoods again,” Mary says. “It’s part of our mission to build community. We can do this by connecting people at our events.” To that end Mary is working year-round and her job really does entail more work than one could guess between summers, like planning technology workshops for artists to teach them how to take their art and submit it to fairs and festivals digitally. Also recently, the Summer of the Arts (read: Mary) has become the go-to organization for festivals-related advice in Iowa City, including the Iowa City Farmer’s Market, the University of Iowa Student Fair and Fry Fest. “That wasn’t a shoe we thought we’d be wearing,” she says. “It doesn’t feel like it ever slows down.” — BLAKE BLAKE MOVED TO IOWA ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO AND OVER USES THE WORD AWESOME. THERE IS ALMOST NOTHING MORE YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HIM. EXCEPT THAT HE’S AWESOME.

BRIAN RAY/THE GAZETTE
Did you know? Part of the reason Mary loves living near Iowa City is how welcoming the city is of her vegan lifestyle. People in other cities gave her strange looks when she asked for vegan items on the menu, but in Iowa City many restaurants already have those options listed. “It’s a totally different filter,” says Mary.

It’s all in the family.
Jaclyn Pagliai, 28, Iowa City Manager @ Pagliai’s Pizza
First thing’s first: How do you pronounce the name of your restaurant? It’s pronounced polly-eyes. We get asked that a lot.
What’s the best thing about working in a family restaurant?
I’m the third generation of this family to work here — so, taking pride a business that’s been here for three generations.
What jobs have you done at Pagliai’s?
I’ve done them all. I’ve washed dishes, I’ve been a server, and now I make pizzas.
How would you describe a Pagliai’s pizza?
Authentic Italian with tangy sauce and crisp crust. We do have a double crust, which is twice as thick, but I
think the thin crust is the best option.
What’s the strangest topping combination you’ve done for a customer?
We have anchovies and shrimp and broccoli. I think those are the most outrageous toppings that we have.
Wait — did you make a pizza with that combination of toppings?
No! I would never put those three together.
What’s your favorite pizza topping?
Sometimes just plain old sausage is great, otherwise I like the Palace Special — sausage, ground beef, pepperoni, mushrooms and onion. We make our own sausage and ground beef daily. — ANNE

BOOKTALK {
Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.
HARVEST THIS BOOK OFF THE SHELVES I love when I end up loving a book or physically can, do (his leg was that I would never in a million years mangled when he was a little boy pick off the shelf. forcing him to walk with a cane) .
Harrison’s “Legends of the Fall,” the book-turned-movie that launched Brad Pitt’s career.
Thanks to a recommendation from a colleague of mine, I had the pleasure of reading “FARMER” by Jim Harrison. This is a little book that packs a big punch. Chick lit it is not. The basic story line is a 43-year-old man struggling to choose between two women, one of which is a 17-year old student of his.
He has plenty more for your list too. Harrison is an extremely prolific writer in many different genres, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
Joseph (the 43-year-old man) has spent his entire adult life making excuses as to why he is where he is — stuck in the same small rural community in northern Michigan where he grew up, still living with his dying mother. Joseph wakes up one day and discovers, he is lost and, as a friend of his observes, the life is draining out of him. He loses his longtime teaching job when the country school where he works closes and it appears that his only option left is to take up farming. Problem is, Joseph isn’t sure if farming is something he wants to,
Then there’s the love story. As a young adult, Joseph fell in love with a girl named Rosalee, who eventually marries Joseph’s best friend, Orin. When Orin dies, Joseph gets a second chance with Rosalee. Instead of picking up where things left off, Joseph toys with Rosalee’s heart. Whether Joseph is trying to punish Rosalee for choosing Orin over him or whether he is just that uncertain about what he wants out of life is up to the reader to decide. Either way Joseph does everything in his power to screw it up, including an affair with one of his 17-yearold students. Harrison’s vivid descriptions beautifully capture the uniqueness and despair of Joseph’s struggles and the community in which he lives. At a mere 160 pages, this is a great book for a rainy summer night! Once you finish “Farmer” check out
Check out some of Harrison’s other fiction works such as “Wolf: A false memoir,” “A Good Day to Die,” “Dalva,” “The Summer He Didn’t Die” and “Julip.” If you are into poetry, it would be worth your time to read “Braided Creek” which is a conversation in poetry with Ted Kooser. In the non-fiction realm, Harrison’s memoir “Off to the Side: A Memoir” is said to be wonderful, as is “The Raw and the Cooked: Adventures of a Roving Gourmand.” While Harrison is a wonderful writer, I have been warned (so I’ll pass this warning off to you) to avoid some of his works, including “The Road Home” and “True North.” — NATALIE

(guitar, backing vocals), Mike Day (percussion), Matt “The Beard” Ash (bass guitar, backing vocals) THE SOUND: class rock, alternative rock, hard rock THE GIG: 9 p.m. July 18 @ Next Door, 1736 16th Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids THE REST OF THE STORY: www.maru-band.com
In Maori mythology, Maru is a god of war. In Japanese, Maru is slang for “demon” or “spirit.” But this Maru is named after Badtz-Maru, a Japanese Sanrio penguin (think Hello Kitty).
All native Cedar Rapidians, the members of Maru focus on bringing a different flavor to the local band scene. Incorporating songs by Black Sabbath and Wolfmother with more traditional cover songs makes Maru stand out from other bands in the area, Manuel says. They plays songs that people want to hear, but also songs that they like to play. “We play stuff that rocks, but not necessarily stuff that’s on the radio,” Manuel says. “We really do this because we’re all into music as musicians.”
Like their unusual name, Maru is not your typical cover band.

“One thing we pride ourselves on is being eclectic,” says guitarist Matt Manuel. Manuel and bass guitarist Matt “The Beard” Ash started their first band, Seven Days, in 1995. After a 12-year hiatus, the two became reacquainted and Maru was born in February 2007. This time around, they were joined by Beard’s wife, Kyla, and drummer Mike Day, who was discovered by Kyla’s father, a postal worker who was delivering Day’s mail.
