I’m just

SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

As regular readers of Hoopla know, we are all about people. Weekly, in these pages, you’ll find interviews with the chefs whose dishes are served at your favorite restaurant, bartenders who mixed up your most requested libations. Local fashionistas share their personal style. In FaveFive, residents — maybe they’re your neighbor, co-worker, best friend — give you a look at their favorite things about living here. And each week, on the cover we highlight someone we think you

should know.

Occasionally they’re an elected official, local celebrity or someone else one might typically consider noteworthy. But generally, we feature people you might run into on the street and not recognize. Or maybe it’s someone you do recognize, but you’re not quite sure who they are, what they do or where they are from. Well. That’s where we come in. Here at Hoopla. We’re all about telling you their story. Because, we believe, people are this area’s

greatest asset.

Someone once asked me, early on in this venture, if I was worried that we’d run out of interesting people to feature?

Umm. No.

I became a journalist because I wanted to share people’s stories. Because I believe everyone has an interesting story. Everyone.

We’ll never run out of people. I’m sure of it. Take this week’s People You Should Meet. Kelli Weber. She and her husband are true young entrepreneurs. They own BBQ This! and Java Creek, both located in the retail area that has grown up near Bowman Woods, near the intersection of C Avenue and Boyson Road. She is also a freelance graphic designer. And on the side, she creates beautiful jewelry that’s sold in high end boutiques in Colorado, Kansas City and right here in Iowa. Cool, right?

There’s more. Next week is Jill Hanna. At 33, she is the

president of the Marion Chamber of Commerce. She grew up in Marion, left and came back to run the chamber. It was through Jill’s passion that the idea for the Imagine8 initiative was formed. A grass-roots effort, Imagine8 is a community visioning process looking to answer the question “Where do we go from here?” and develop eight ideas to enhance Marion as a

better place to live, work and play.

Then early next month we’ll feature Robby Marvin. Last month he launched The Robject. For the next 12 months he will give 31.2 percent of his income (the number comes from the height the Cedar River rose to in June 2008) to charity as well as volunteer 365 hours at 12 local organizations. See why I’m not worried about running out of people to feature. Not worried at all.

My list is long, and always growing.

To the moon

Michael Jackson’s moonwalk move couldn’t hold up against the real deal, according to an online poll. Voters said a resounding “no” to including Jackson in this year’s butter sculpture at the Iowa State Fair. After a week of voting, with more than 100,000 votes cast, the margin was 65.24 percent “no” to 34.76 percent “yes.” In addition to the butter Jersey cow, this year’s sculpture will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s “giant leap for mankind,” including an astronaut, American flag and rendition of the moon’s surface.

The entertainment publication reported that Helms will play an insurance agent who goes to an industry conference in Cedar Rapids to try to save his co-workers jobs. Playing the odds

CEDAR RAPIDS — Playing the odds has worked out well for one Cedar Rapids man. Wiley Tuley, an electronics technician, won more than $24,000 in

the Iowa Lottery. Tuley played the same number twice in the Saturday evening Pick 4 drawing, doubling his $12,000 prize. The winning numbers represented his work I.D. number from a previous employer. Tuley discovered he was a winner in the Sunday morning paper and says he plans to pay off some credit cards and keep the rest of his winnings in the bank for a rainy day.

Bobber’s Grill

I grew up with family vacations to the Okoboji area my whole life. I love everything about dining on a lakeside patio on a beautiful summer day or evening. It was a pleasant surprise when I heard about Bobber’s earlier this summer and gave it a try. It’s a little piece of vacation in our backyard. The food and drinks are good. But the atmosphere is priceless.

02

Graze

This is always my first place to take out-oftown friends and family who are visiting. It’s also the first place I suggest when friends and I are picking a place to eat or have “fun drinks.” It’s a big city feel in a small downtown area. From the martini list to the dessert menu, there is certainly something for everyone. The service has always been wonderful and their tapas-style dinning is sure the please the crowd.

03

Iowa City Tailgating

Nothing beats a sea of black and gold on a Saturday at 6 a.m. This fall will be my eighth football season and I can count the number of tailgates I have missed on one hand. I’ve always been drawn to the fact that whether you are 6 or 60, one thing remains the same — good food, good friends and a hope for a Hawkeye win. The games themselves are always great. But it’s while wandering the streets of Melrose Avenue and Hawkins Drive that you get the true feeling of the Hawkeye spirit.

Recreational Activities

I became the captain for a slow pitch softball team this season and it has led to a weekly game, full of fun and relaxation with my team members. There are so many options for leagues all year-round in all varieties of sports. I was almost overwhelmed by my choices. This is something I see myself doing for many summers to come.

Think you don’t need flood insurance?

Add this valuable protection before its too late. Flooding can happen almost anywhere, any time. It might be the result of days of torrential rain. Or quickly melting snow. Or failed flood control structures like levees or dams. But the majority of property owners’ policies do not include coverage for losses caused by flooding. That’s why American Family Insurance is a participating company in the National Flood Insurance Program. There’s a 30-day wait before a flood insurance policy takes effect, making it important to consider this coverage now. So call or visit your American Family agent soon to see if you’re eligible to purchase this coverage. The weather won’t wait.

YOU SHOULD MEET

Kelli Weber, 29, Cedar Rapids

Designer and owner @ Link Lust

She’s an artist by training. A fashionista by nature. And for the last year Kelli Weber has merged her passion for the two by turning an eye for color and design into a jewelry business.

Different colors were once used that aren’t now, she says. These beads have saturated, brighter hues. Unique details and textures reveal the craftsmanship that went into making each bead.

“I wasn’t finding what I wanted in the stores,” says Kelli. “So I started making my own and I fell in love with it.”

For inspiration, Kelli looks both to the fashion world and the world around her.

Her creations are glamorous. Chunky gold chains, jeweled scorpions, delicately-strung vintage findings, semiprecious stones and coiled metals. The name she chose for her business, Link Lust, conjures all the right images. Old world materials. Modern style. Her goal is simply to make beautiful things, timeless, quality pieces of wearable art.

“I’m not trying to be too trendy,” she says. “I want to make pieces that will hold through time.”

Kelli often buys materials from vintage vendors around the globe. Many of the glass beads she uses were found in abandoned warehouses in Germany, Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic. “I always have a sketch pad with me,” she says. Still, she says, that’s just a starting point. She never starts with a concrete vision of what a piece will look like. It’s all about how the components work best together. It’s rearranging beads, shortening the length, changing components. Happy accidents can also be a part of the design process. “You spill something and an orange bead drops into a piece and you go ‘awesome!’” Kelli says. While it’s hard not to keep every piece she designs, owning 5,000 pieces of jewelry wouldn’t be very practical. “Each piece seems to find its owner,” she says. And she enjoys seeing a customer fall in love with one of her designs. From concept to creation, each piece can take several hours. It’s more than just putting pieces together, Kelli says. Kelli works out of a studio in her home, where she also runs her freelance graphic design business Simplified Designs. Because she works with vintage items, each piece is one-of-a-kind and her inventory develop relationships with the owners. With price points ranging between $20-$250, Kelli tries to have something for everyone. “You can buy a pair of earrings to wear out for the weekend and not feel bad, or you can get that one special piece that you know you’ll wear with every black dress,” she says. — ERIN a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 20 and 21 at the Velvet Coat, 116 E. BEHINDthebar {

Where everybody knows your name.

Alex Karr, 21, Iowa City

Day Manager @ George’s Buffet How’d you get into bartending?

My dad owns two bars, this one and the Solon Station in Solon. I grew up in the bars and started working at the one in Solon when I was legal to work. I’d clean it in the mornings. On my 18th birthday, my dad asked me what I wanted to do and I was like, “I want to bartend.” It was always something that fascinated me.

What do you like about working in your family’s bar?

George’s is known for having good cheeseburgers. What’s the secret to your burgers?

The grill. In Solon we have the exact same grill and the burgers are just as good. We’ve had the grill for years upon years upon years and we’ve always had the reputation of having good burgers. We have news articles from, like, 1970, saying George’s has the best burgers in town, the best sliders, and we’ve always had the same grill.

Everyone knows you. I can come into work and someone might drink a little bit more than normal and start telling me childhood stories — things that I don’t even remember. I can’t tell you how many I’ve heard. The waitresses and bartenders that have worked at these bars for a long time, they’re basically family, you know? I’ve known them my entire life.

But your name is George’s Buffet, right? Where’s the buffet?

How would you describe the typical crowd at George’s?

What would you be doing if you weren’t bartending at George’s?

During the day, most of the time we have the same eight people drinking coffee or having a couple of beers or some soda water. Throughout the day, they leave, and we get the after-work crowd. After that, it differs. Sometimes we get the downtown kind of crowd. We get the (University of Iowa) Writer’s Workshop kids on Mondays. Art students. Sometimes there’ll be a game on and people will come in for specials.

We have all the chips right there. People call in a lot and ask, “What’s on the buffet today?” And we’ll either be completely honest and say “We only serve burgers,” or we might feel a little sassy and be like, “We have lobster today,” or something else outrageous.

I have no idea. I’ve been a waiter a little bit. I’ve worked some landscaping, construction stuff, but nothing really struck my fancy. I went to school for a couple of years and took classes that interested me, but nothing really stuck. Ever since I was little, I just always wanted to bartend. It’s my calling.

BOOKTALK {

Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.

SPEND SOME TIME WITH “THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE” So, I’m a little behind with this best-seller, but “THE TIME confident in it. Henry’s existence is much more disjointed. TRAVELER’S WIFE” by Audrey Niffenegger is the When he time travels, he always arrives naked and with no

would normally be creepy but is an intriguing sensitive friendship, made entirely appropriate by the author. Henry eventually lets it slip that he and Clare are married in the future and they will meet “for real” when Clare is 20 and Henry is 28.

The book opens with Henry and Clare’s first date as adults. This chapter is one of my favorites. Henry, trying to sort through how this strange woman knows so much about him says, “Are we going to get married?” “I assume so, “ she replies. “You’ve been telling me for years that wherever you are coming from, you’re married to me.” Clare has a perfectly calm acceptance of Henry’s odd condition. She knows just enough about the future to be

If I have one complaint, it’s that the constant punk band and Chicago street and restaurant name dropping interrupts the strength of the story. They feel forced and don’t seem to match the characters. But overall, the premise is hopelessly romantic and makes the reader think about how the present can change (or not) by knowing the future. Just as behind on your best-seller reading as me? Pick up

“WATER FOR ELEPHANTS,” by Sara Gruen. It’s a goody.

And keep an eye out for a movie version of “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” starring Rachel McAdams as Clare and Eric Bana as Henry. It’s due out August 14.

With a name inspired by B-grade monster movies, hot rods and good times, the Surf Zombies have been making “joyful noises” since the foursome started recording songs for film in 2005. Guitarist Brook Hoover and Joel McDowell, bass, have been musical partners for longer than either can remember. Kyle Oyloe, second guitar, writes great stuff, says Hoover. “We love to bounce hot guitar leads back and forth,” he says. Erik Marshall on drums rounds out the group with his straight ahead style. They got their big break at The Picador in Iowa City when they opened for the King of Surf Guitar Dick Dale. The Surf Zombies’ shows are intense, says Hoover. “There’s no lyrical content to guide us, it’s just all wicked jams.”

SURF ZOMBIES

This self-described surf instrumental combo can’t escape their garage rock, new wave and punk roots, but incorporate a wide variety of other influences into their songs. The Surf Zombies play fast, straight up rock and make use of Middle Eastern musical scales, adding in ska and samba beats and psychedelic sounds.

“Many people think of film soundtracks or Quentin Tarantino movies when the hear us,” says Hoover. “Mainly we play what is going on in our heads.” Though they do throw in the occasional surf classic, the band primarily performs all original pieces.

They also use classic sound effects courtesy of vintage 60s Fender hand-wired tube amps which produce effects such as reverb and tremolo.

“I usually string a few chords together in what seems like a new and unique manner, then find an unusual melody,” he says.

A large majority are written by Hoover.

The Surf Zombies’ first, self-titled CD has found success both locally and around the world via iTunes, says Hoover. “It’s kind of anonymous, we don’t exactly know who is using it,” he says. “But it’s kind of nice to know that the music is at work somewhere while we sleep.” A second album, “Something Weird,” is slated for release at their Next Door gig August 21. —
