I’m just

SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

A couple of weeks ago we featured Elaine and Erica Yoder, the two Kalona sisters who are following their dreams and starting an event planning business. Last week, it was jewelry designer Kelli Weber. She too has chosen to turn a passion into

a business.

These ladies and hundreds of other Eastern Iowans deserve our applause for embarking on the intimidating journey of owning their own business. And for that same reason. They also deserve our support. One of the criticisms of Cedar Rapids (but not so much Iowa City), is that we are the chain capital of the world. I won’t deny that that’s true. And while it’s hasty to dismiss those businesses entirely — they are after all employing local people — it is also true though that locally-owned establishments are what make a community unique. And both Cedar Rapids and Iowa City have plenty of local restaurants, bars and boutiques to support. Don’t believe me? Search our archives. Hoopla makes a point to feature only locally owned restaurants and bars in BehindTheBar, InTheKitchen and Clean Plate Club. This issue marks our 31st this year and we haven’t exhausted our options yet. And what about places to shop? There are plenty of options on that count too. So many that instead of answering the InCircle question, I decided to devote this entire column to the topic. I was inspired to ask this week’s question for a couple of reasons. One is Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of

Commerce’s Buy In program, which they were promoting at the last Downtown Farmer’s Market. I wasn’t sure what it was. So I Googled. Turns out it’s an initiative by the chamber to get local businesses to pledge to shift 5 percent of their current outof-area purchases back to Linn County. Doing so, they say, will capture $400 million currently lost to the county, thus

creating 2,300 jobs.

Makes sense right? But it’s not just businesses that can pledge to buy local. We can too. The gal you see on the cover sure would like you to. Jill Hanna makes it her business to support other businesses as the president of the Marion Chamber of Commerce. She’s pictured in downtown Marion, one of my favorite places in the area, which features several great places to shop. I could spend hours (and have) at several of the downtown shops, like Weeping Willow, Campbell Steele Gallery, chocolate temptations fine candies, Joy Boutique and Dreaming Bear. All these options, within less than one block of Marion. See why I couldn’t pick just one? Not with the whole Corridor to choose from. So. Am I asking you to give up on chain stores entirely? No. That wouldn’t be very practical. But consider the Buy In program. Can you pledge five percent? If you spend $100 a month on clothes, home decor or gifts, that’s just $5. Sounds reasonable to me.

I’m just sayin’,

IOWA CITY — Iowa City has been ranked in three new Forbes lists, most recently No. 5 for “Best Places to Begin a Career” (communities smaller than 500,000) and No. 13 for “Top College Towns for Jobs” in May. In March, for the second year, Iowa City was ranked on Forbes’ “Best Places for Business and Careers.”

Growing green

CEDAR RAPIDS — A new AmeriCorps group is working to make Eastern Iowa a little greener. The 56 members of Green Iowa AmeriCorps, the first of its kind in the nation, are based in Cedar Rapids and Cedar Falls. Part of the group’s outreach is a community garden, created in two vacant lots in the flood-affected New Bohemia neighborhood in Cedar Rapids. They have used discarded items like bed frames and doors in addition to materials from demolished homes in building the garden. The group also focuses on weatherization of homes in older neighborhoods and providing energy efficient solutions for community members.

LINN COUNTY — The government of Linn County will soon have a Twitter account. The Board of Supervisors have voted to let Joi Bergman, the county’s communications director, open a Twitter account. The “tweets” will include board updates, links to posted news releases and road closures. “I

Chet Culver and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. Bergman expects to start “tweeting” in August.

Imagine gine this

Jill Hanna, 33, Marion

President @ Marion Chamber of Commerce

Jill Hanna is living proof of Marion’s slogan: “You can go home again.”

“I really like it because it has so many different components,” Jill says. These pieces include a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities, new signage to After attending the University of Iowa and working as a store director for Target accent sites of historical significance and a tool kit to aid residents in planning for 10 years, Jill returned to her hometown in 2007 to take her current position community events like block parties or garage sales. with the Marion Chamber of Commerce and be closer to family. Another idea, “Park it,” could involve partially enclosing the depot in the City One of the first things Jill noticed was that Marion hadn’t really changed much Park. over the last 30 years. While some may appreciate this for its nostalgia, Jill was concerned that Marion wasn’t keeping up with surrounding communities. “We have four seasons here and the winter one seems to last a long time,” Jill says. “I have a lot of passion for Marion as a community,” Jill says. The enclosed portion of the depot would serve as a multiuse space for events, Compared to towns like Hiawatha, North Liberty and Coralville, Marion has performing arts and a welcome center. Building an amphitheater and expanding some catching up to do, she says. green space are also part of the “Park it” idea.

Enter Imagine8. A grass-roots effort, Imagine8 is a community visioning process Though she’s passionate about Imagine8, Jill’s job involves a lot more. launched in January to answer the question “Where do we go from here?” and develop eight ideas to enhance Marion as a better place to live, work and play. “It’s different every day,” she says. “Everything we do is kind of made from scratch.” Jill emphasizes the importance of this vision involving the whole community. Jill says she uses a lot of what she learned about management at Target to “It can’t just be six or seven people,” she says. “It has to come from everyone.” assist Marion’s small business owners, which account for 95 percent of Marion’s businesses, and other chamber members. In August committees will begin to come up with strategies and funding plans to make each of these eight ideas become a reality. One of her favorite job perks? Each of the eight selected ideas focuses on a way to make Marion a more functional and fun place to live.

“It gives me an excuse to shop,” says Jill. The stores in uptown Marion are great, she says. “And I’m supporting our membership.”

I love being surprised by restaurants.

dinner dishes offered in a lunch-size portion. To start my meal I ordered Steamed Crab Rolls, a mixture of snow crab, blue crab, tomato, mint, cilantro and lime juice wrapped in rice paper and served with mango ketchup. The rice paper made the rolls appear as unassuming blobs. But once I cut into it I discovered a sensation of cool crab, with a bit of crunch and loads of flavor.

SURPRISES ON EVERY CORNER It had been awhile since I’d been down Edgewood Road. I knew there was lots of construction going on over the last few years, including a giant Hy-Vee and a strip mall with a couple new restaurants, but I was completely surprised by one of the more recent additions Jiamen. Jiamen takes over a large area near the corner of Blairs Ferry and Edgewood Roads in Cedar Rapids. The exterior is polished and chic. I got a definite P.F. Chang’s vibe, the chain of upscale Chinese restaurants. It’s one of my favorites!

My entree was Wok-Fired Diced Chicken with Honey Chili Sauce, a roasted pepper encrusted chicken breast served with brown rice in a light soy honey lemon sauce. The true test of a good Asian restaurant is its brown rice. Jiamen’s rice was very lovely, fluffy with a nice nuttiness. The chicken was tender little nuggets of white meat, Jiamen’s décor may be similar, but their menu is original. sautéed and coated with a sweet and spicy sauce. They go beyond traditional stir-fry dishes and offer meat and potato favorites with an Asian flare. American Jiamen has brought an upscale vibe to a formerly lowstandards such as duck breast and porterhouse steaks key corner of town. I look forward to coming back during are taken to a new level with flavors such as Asian pear dinner hours when I can kick back and enjoy a cocktail and honey ginger. and some company. I visited over lunch and was pleased to see most of the

New bar on the block.

Robert (“Odie”) Odekirk, 28, Marion Bartender @ Teeghan’s Ice Bar

How long have you been spinning the bottle?

My parents owned a bar growing up, so I was behind a bar before I could see over one. I’ve learned a lot over the years. Officially I’ve been bartending for six years now. I’ve been with Teeghan’s since they originally opened in January 2008.

Tell me about Teeghan’s new location along Second Avenue.

Our new spot is prime location. We couldn’t have found a better place downtown. There are several other spots right around us, so we’re literally placed in the middle of all the action. From a crowd perspective we’ve already passed our highest numbers pre-flood, and it just keeps getting better.

How do you explain the success?

It’s all about the feel of the bar. The place is laid back, safe, but with lots to keep you entertained.

What’s your take on the downtown night life scene post-flood?

I’ve traveled all over and been to many downtowns, and Cedar Rapids Downtown is my favorite. It’s all about the people and their attitude. Here everyone is so welcoming. I’m very proud we’ve all managed to accomplish so much in the past year. Spirits are up and we’re making downtown a fun place to be.

What’s a common bartender faux pas.

One of the biggest mistakes is overpouring ingredients in your mixed drinks. A good rule of thumb from the Teeghan’s “mixologists” is to take a one ounce shot glass and let that be your guide. It helps even out the amount of shots within a drink. — QUINN

BOOKTALK {

Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.

‘LONG LOST’ AT LONG LAST Thank goodness. My good friend Myron Bolitar is back. In the ninth book in the Myron Bolitar series, “LONG LOST,” Harlan Coben brings us the same snippy and sarcastic Bolitar we’ve come to know and love. One of my favorite literary characters, Myron Bolitar is the main character in Coben’s series. He is a sports and entertainment agent and one of the most colorful and likable characters I’ve encountered. No matter how despicable Myron’s actions (beating some guy to a pulp is a good example), I still end up wanting to take the guy out for a drink. For those of you who have yet to have the pleasure of reading a Myron Bolitar book, Myron was on the verge of becoming a great professional basketball player when a knee injury blew his dream to shreds. After a stint as an investigator, Myron took up a career as an agent. He often finds himself in rather troublesome situations. His clients seem to attract drama, and Myron’s responses always tend to make the situation worse. In “LONG LOST” (don’t worry, you don’t have to have read the first eight to enjoy No. 9), Myron is surrounded by the usual host of colorful, exuberant and verbose friends. After receiving an unexpected call from an old girlfriend whom he hasn’t heard from in seven years, Myron finds himself on his way to France to comfort her when her ex-husband mysteriously goes missing. Quickly, Myron finds himself in the middle of yet another scandal; only this time, it involves the world of terrorism. Let the PA GE 1 6

drama begin. As with Coben’s other novels, “LONG LOST” does not disappoint. It is not a challenging book; definitely mind candy, which makes it a perfect book for your relaxing summer vacation.

If you are not into over-the-top sarcasm or want to try something a little different, pick up “BLONDE” by Joyce Carol Oates, in which Oates tackles the rise and fall of Norma Jeane Baker (aka Marilyn Monroe). One of the many things that sets “BLONDE” apart from the typical celebrity biography is Oates’ approach to the story. She gets into the head of Norma Jeane to reveal what Norma is thinking and feeling throughout her short yet iconic life. I am halfway through the book (at 700-plus pages, it may take me a while) and have already learned a lot, most notably how lost Norma Jeane Baker really was. Oates describes Norma Jeane as a genius because “Norma didn’t have a clue who she was, and she had to fill this emptiness in her. Each time she went out, she had to invent her soul. Other people, we’re just as empty; maybe in fact everybody’s soul is empty, but Norma was the one to know it.” This is a great book; part novel, part biography, part mystery. A challenge, yes, but here’s to hoping it is worth it.
