SAYIN’ {
Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.
It wasn’t intentional. But this past weekend provided a perfect set up for this week’s issue. It was my birthday, you see, and for the occasion, my husband and another couple decided the best way to celebrate would be dinner and drinks
on the town.
The problem? Where to go? I’m not saying that I couldn’t find anywhere to go. The exact opposite. We couldn’t choose from the options.
Cibo? A new standby. Jiamen? A restaurant I’ve been meaning to try. Osaka? One of those places that’s always on my list for a night out. Blend? Perfect atmosphere for a date night.
we ordered the decadent mac & cheese, pan-roasted halibut, horseradish salmon and the beef tenderloin. Each time the plates were licked clean. At just $2 a pop though we couldn’t turn down dessert either. We sampled the chocolate bread pudding, creme brulee and a berry lemon-poppyseed cake. The most clever dessert was ordered by my husband: bacon and eggs. A vanilla panna cotta with peach puree, chocolate covered bacon with smoked sea salt, espresso caramel sauce. He loved it, especially the bacon. We followed up our meal, with drinks at DC’s Riverwalk, Dublin City, Parlor City Pub & Eatery and Chrome Horse. I hadn’t been to Dublin since they reopened in the former Muddy Water’s last month. Muddy’s was always a favorite, so I was happy to see that Dublin restored the space nicely, making it their own, with just enough ol’ Irish vibe. And the extensive beer list, both bottled and on tap, was a pleasant surprise.
Seriously. I could go on and on. And I did.
Parlor City is also a recent discovery. The interior is fabulous, with walls down to the studs and a restored exterior, tiles and We finally settled on Zins because none of us tin ceiling. (Read more on page 16.) had been back since they reopened this summer and my husband hadn’t had the chance to check The Chrome Horse too is back better than ever. I need to go it out pre-flood either. back during the day with an empty stomach to sample the menu. Our decision was divine. We took full advantage of the small plate menu. To start, we shared the classic pomme frites, served with a yummy garlic aoli; steamed Chinese pork dumplings; a spinach and strawberry salad with goat cheese, onions and candied pecans; and summer rolls with coconut seasoned shrimp, noodles & vegetables rolled in rice papers and served with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce. We followed with individual entrees. Between us

We had a fabulous night and the best part was that if we’d had it in us, there were a dozen more options in the downtown area alone to choose from. Haven’t sampled what downtown has to offer lately? Cedar Rapids drivers have held on to their designation as some of the safest drivers in the nation, according to Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report.

Road tested
CEDAR RAPIDS — Drivers here are ranked the fourth safest drivers out of America’s 200 largest cities, according to the most recent Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report. Cedar Rapids has ranked in the top five in as many years. Sioux Falls, S.D., maintains the top spot, having the safest drivers in the nation for the fourth consecutive year.

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy will begin hearings Aug. 19 on the pros and cons of medical marijuana. Advocates of legalizing the medical use of marijuana are optimistic that the series of public hearings on the issue could open the door to Iowa becoming

the 14th state to effectively allow it. The board will accept comments from the public but is especially looking for scientific evidence on the use of marijuana for medical purposes. While the board may make a recommendation to state lawmakers, any change in Iowa’s classification of marijuana would have to be made by the legislature. An attempt to make marijuana legal for medical use stalled in the Iowa Senate last session.
Beyond bridges
The federal government’s $2.5 billion plan for economic recovery in Iowa isn’t all roads and
bridges. Health care and education account for 50 percent of the federal government’s plan to prime Iowa’s economic pump. Transportation funds are just 16 percent of the state’s share of the $787 billion America Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but they are the most visible signs of the stimulus at work in Iowa. Much of the massive federal spending is less obvious, such as $421 million in additional Medicaid funding or $40 million from the act which helped local school districts avoid teacher layoffs.

I don’t have to describe Twitter in 140 characters, it’s just tweets that can only be that long. I use Twitter on an hourly basis. The simple online communication tool keeps me informed with what’s going on here in the Corridor; everywhere from Decorah to Iowa City. Here at KCRGTV9, I use it to let people know what I’m working on, and they use it to tell me what to look into. BTW, my user name is @justinfoss

Cedar Rapids RoughRiders
They’re a good team with a great following. I play in a hockey league at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, and it’s a great feeling to step out on the same ice as them. From the cowbells to the rivalry with the Waterloo Blackhawks, Cedar Rapids has a good thing going with the constantly growing hockey tradition. Being from Minnesota, home of the Hockey Hall of Fame, it’s a welcome sight to see fans embracing this sport.

Sweet Potato Fries at Parlor City Pub & Eatery
This bar and grill is a relative newcomer to the Cedar Rapids’ night life scene. It’s in the New Bohemia district (or more simply stated, across the street from the Chrome Horse). The bar has a great atmosphere and the fries are delicious! Even if you hate sweet potatoes — as I once did — you’ll love these fries that taste just a bit sweeter than normal.

Iowa brewed beverages
From Millstream Brewing in Amana, to Templeton Rye Whiskey, made in Templeton, this state has some of the best home-brews around. Not only is drinking one of Millstream’s brews a treat, but relaxing on their patio in Amana offers a great mingling experience. Don’t count out the wineries either. Just last month Iowa was named to the newly formed Upper Mississippi River Valley wine region, covering 29,914 square miles.

The following weekend, audiences will hear from contestants in the “Stars of Tomorrow” competition, including Chase Garrett, Jenny Harrison, Adam Hoffman, Meredith Taylor and Amy Willett. THE FINE ART OF A GOOD HAMBURGER JOINT Sometimes you just want a big, fat, juicy hamburger. No. This isn’t the set up to a Hardees commercial. There are plenty of other places unique to the Corridor that celebrate the fine art of a well-cured grease trap.
The idea of lunching at Starlite used to come with trepidations of returning from lunch smelling like you had smoked a carton of cigarettes. Steph Jelinek, 25, Robins
Manager @ Parlor City Pub & Eatery
Your father-in-law, Jon Jelinek, bought this building in August of 2008, not long after the neighborhood was flooded. Why?
Jon felt like this was what the neighborhood needed. He has been a part of this neighborhood for a very long time, and he wants the area to come back to how it was — wants to preserve the historic buildings here and make (the) New Bohemia (neighborhood) a destination.
What was in this building before the flood?
It was the Art Vault.

Anytime you ride a bike here, or you buy a stein of beer, you get an entry ticket for a drawing for a Trek Portland road bike. This goes through August 27.
The water was high (11-feet-1-inch) — it reached to the bottom of the exit sign above our front door. We power washed everything in here, totally gutted the building, and then began the construction process. We were able to restore the original floor tiles and tin ceiling, and we got the outside restored so it looks like Cedar Rapids was known as the parlor city in the early it did in the early 1900s. 1900s because of the city’s neat appearance, and people’s hospitality.
What’s the story behind the name Parlor City?
How would you describe the atmosphere here?
Very clean and relaxed with historical Cedar Rapids’ decor. It’s a pub, so we encourage people to come in and gather and have a beverage, some food and enjoy the company of friends and family. It’s just a very comfortable environment for everyone. We’re a couple of blocks from the (Cedar Valley Nature) trail, so we get a lot of bicyclists through here. We sponsored a
What kind of food is on your menu?
Everyone has just raved about the food and what they can get here. We serve appetizers, salads, pizzas, burgers, wraps and sandwiches, as well as a kids’ menu. Our hamburgers are all Angus beef half-pound burgers. People seem to rave over our pizzas, especially

What’s your most popular menu item?
Our Jucy Lucy and Spicy Lucy burgers. They’re hamburger patties with the cheese cooked inside. Jucy has American cheese inside and Spicy has pepperjack. We also have a sweet potato fries appetizer that people really like, served with a candied dipping sauce.
What’s the best thing about working in the restaurant business?
The people you meet. All sorts of different people come in, and you get to hear their story, and tell them your story. Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.
STUMBLE UPON ‘STUMBLING ON HAPPINESS’ Nope, the book title isn’t referring to discovering Pancheros at 2 a.m. after an evening at Joe’s Place. Instead, fans of Malcolm Gladwell, or of “Freakonomics” can further their psychology/ economics education by reading Daniel Gilbert’s “STUMBLING ON HAPPINESS.” Like Gladwell, Dubner and Levitt, Gilbert ruminates over the mysteries of humanity. Specifically, he explains why we are so bad at predicting how our future self might feel about something. We are also terrible at putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes and imagining whether we would like or dislike their life.

Think about it: In my mind I love the chicken strip basket from Dairy Queen. Like, in my mind right now, I might be plotting a path from work that includes a Dairy Queen. Rarely am I that happy to actually consume this basket, however. Even though I know this, my mind continues to tell me about the fried
goodness that awaits if only I plunk down the cash at a DQ. Of course, Gilbert applies this theory to more significant decisions: choice of spouse, whether or not to have children, etc. You’ll have to read the book to learn what he has to say about all of that. Of course, sometimes our decisions do make us happy, but really, that’s just dumb luck. We stumble on. — CAITLIN

Gilbert asks in the foreword, “What would you do right now if you learned you were going to die in 10 minutes?” Eat a Twinkie? Mouth off to your boss? Chances are, you haven’t done these things today. According to Gilbert, that’s because you believe your future self will be grateful. Well, the whole point of the book is to show you that you have no idea what your future self will happy about. She may wish that you’d quit and moved to Hawaii. Every day, we make decisions for our futures; sometimes the moment and sometimes long-term. And every day we are disappointed by the choices of our past selves.
PRODUCTION OPENINGS CCB Packaging, a locally owned leader in the packaging industry is experiencing rapid growth and needing to fill the following positions.
Think you don’t need flood insurance?
Add this valuable protection before its too late. Flooding can happen almost anywhere, any time. It might be the result of days of torrential rain. Or quickly melting snow. Or failed flood control structures like levees or dams. But the majority of property owners’ policies do not include coverage for losses caused by flooding. That’s why American Family Insurance is a participating company in the National Flood Insurance Program. There’s a 30-day wait before a flood insurance policy takes effect, making it important to consider this coverage now. So call or visit your American Family agent soon to see if you’re eligible to purchase this coverage. The weather won’t wait.

Their various locations make having a regular practice schedule tough. “We get together before shows to practice,” says Greg, of Kansas City, Mo. “And every few months we buckle down to work on writing and recording stuff.”

You’ve probably heard of long distance relationships, but how about a long distance band? That’s just what the Wheelers are, with members spread from the Midwest to the West Coast. The foursome all grew up in Cedar Rapids and have known each other since high school. And while life and careers have pulled them apart geographically, music has kept the band together. They say the story of how the band got its name is a secret. A wide variety of influences create the Wheeler’s sound. “We’re all really into music in general,” says Ian (the band members all go by the stage surname Wheeler. Think The Ramones), of Marion. From Blonde Redhead and Smashing Pumpkins to Sonic Youth and the Thermals, this alternative/ indie rock group combines “‘60s vibes with trashier ‘90s influences” when

For Ian, recording music is as much of a passion as playing it. He co-owns and operates the Soundhole, a recording studio in Marion, where the Wheelers, recorded their second album. “We just hung out in a steamy hot unfinished building in the middle of July and got a bunch of stuff laid down,” says Ian. “It was a really different way for us to work, but it was a blast.” — ERIN

He’ll give local audiences a taste of his “Urban “If the garden that is the students is Garden” tonight when the Fred Woodard Trio tended to, they can do great things,” kicks off KCCK’s “Jazz Under the Stars” series he says. at 7 p.m. in Noelridge Park in northeast Cedar Rapids. And he traces the root of jazz through Performing with him on the new CD and in the “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child.” His interpretation “shows concert are Cedar Falls native Hill Greene on bass and Chicago native Yoron Israel on drums. where jazz came from on the musical continuum, from spirituals, then Both have esteemed careers apart from the blues, then jazz — another derivative trio. Greene plays in the New York City scene and in major cities around the world. Israel has of blues.” He melds the more modern styles on “Mean Street, No Bridges,” performed with such heavy-hitters as Sonny Rollins, Grover Washington and Tony Bennett. over what he call “a funky foundation.” Tonight’s concert is “like a homecoming,” Woodard says. “Iowa can see what their native sons have been able to produce in the jazz world.” As a composer, Woodard laces his straightahead jazz with other styles from his eclectic career. “When I first graduated from Berkeley, I was fortunate to be hired to play in a blues band with a regular gig in downtown Boston,” he says. “That forced me to really study the blues idiom. Albert King and B.B. King were the two main influences that really led me to really try to see a connection between blues and jazz. In my opinion, blues and jazz idioms are closely related. Blues is the foundation of a lot of styles — and also the foundation of jazz music.”
“I’m taking my experience of performing music in general and mixing it with blues, bebop and free jazz, following the African-American continuum of music through jazz,” he says. But don’t expect his live concert to sound exactly like his new CD. “My way of composing is a vehicle for improvisation,” he says. “We’re really talking about material that is based on whatever concept I’m trying to work on. I consider my compositions to be outlines for improvisation. Once the theme is stated, the group improvises. The life that it takes on depends on the
