QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
October is synonymous with beer here in E. Iowa. Oktoberfest has come and gone, but there’s another chance Oct. 16 to sample some fine beers at the National Czech and Slovak Museum’s BrewNost. So belly up to the bar for a good cause.

I’m just
SAYIN’ {
Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.
The first newspaper I worked at in Homer, Alaska, was across the street and down the hill from the local brewery. We often joked about running a pipeline from their brewery to our offices. And while that plan never went beyond pipe dreams, I did often stop by on my way home to pick up a growler. One of my favorite treats was a porter float. Like a root beer float except with rich, chocolately porter. Mmmm. That year in Homer was educational for many reasons, one of them being my introduction to good beer. In college I drank what was cheap or even better — free. Generally that meant Busch Light or if we were feeling frisky Bud Light. Not that there is anything wrong with either. I’m still known to toss back both from time to time, and our fridge is generally stocked with some of the latter.
And I’ll try any of them at least once. You see, while we on the West Coast may be famous for our particularity about coffee, we are similarly picky about beer. And much the same way I have been pleased to see coffee shops sprout up and flourish in Eastern Iowa, I love the increasing popularity of microbrews locally. Hotek says its because more bars are offering microbrews on tap. I could buy that argument. While it could be intimidating to buy an entire six-pack of a beer you’ve never tried, you’re not out as much if you order just one draw. Places like John’s Grocery and Benz Beverage Depot also have amazing selections of microbrews. You can even build-yourown six-pack. Then there’s places like Millstream Brewery in the Amanas or Third Base Brewery in Cedar Rapids where you can get beer brewed on site. Not sure what you want? Ask for tastes. There are also lots of opportunities for tasting at events throughout the year. Coming up Oct. 16 is BrewNost, which benefits the National Czech and Slovak Museum, and is cohosted by John’s Grocery.
But, it was in Homer that I learned that beer could They also host Iowa City BrewFest every September. Amana be something to be enjoyed, savored. Not just has an annual Oktoberfest celebration; Millstream a Beer pumped into a plastic cup and chugged. Festival in September and Benz hosts a Beer Fest in the spring. Check both Benz and Millstreams’ Web sites for a By no means am I a connoisseur, like Joe Hotek, one lineup of events. Find them at www.benzbeveragedepot. of the Bier Guys at John’s Grocery in Iowa City. He’s com and www.millstreambrewing.com pictured on page 12 surrounded by row upon row of six-packs. And he could probably name them all and tell So many options. My only complaint is that I still can’t get my you the characteristics of each. favorite beer here in Iowa. If someone could figure out how to get Alaskan Amber sold locally, I’d appreciate it. That I cannot do. But I do know the difference between an ale and a lager. I know, for example, that among the ales, an IPA is going to have a strong bitterness from the hops, and a porter will be smoother, full flavored and dark, while a stout is dark and more bitter.

The options are: staying at Steve & Barry’s in the Westdale Mall; buying and rehabbing the old Econofoods on 51st Street NE; renovating the current Administrative Office Building; going back to the Administrative Office Building as it was before the flood; co-locating with the city and/or school district.
Round and round
CEDAR RAPIDS — Business owners want to preserve a piece of Czech Village history. Czech Village Association members hope to move the Riverside Roundhouse to keep it in the business district. The roundhouse, used for farmers markets for decades, is at risk of being torn down if the city allows the site to be used by the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. Museum officials propose constructing a building at the site and are asking the city to move or demolish the roundhouse, 1350 A St. SW. Both were damaged in last year’s flood. Parks and recreation director Julie Sina said the estimated cost to repair the roundhouse was $354,700, but because of its location near the river, only $109,000 would be federally reimbursed.

What she’s wearing:
I’m wearing a Pima cotton crew neck tee shirt in chocolate brown with a ruched scarf in browns and greens. Both the shirt and scarf are from Lane Bryant. This combo looks great with denim and I typically add a green cami for a touch of additional color under the tee. The outfit pairs well with bold but simple silver jewelry.
What she says:
My style inspiration comes from everywhere: magazines, Internet and TV. But it also comes from what I am most comfortable in — what I can put on that makes me feel like I’m ready to take on the world.

Bier Guy @ John’s Grocery
When Joe Hotek, a University of Iowa cinema major, isn’t studying for an exam or adding the finishing touches to a class film project, it’s likely he’s studying beer. You’re probably thinking a lot of college students “study beer” in their spare time, but Joe Hotek is different. He doesn’t just like beer. He considers himself an advocate for the brew. During his sophomore year of college he began working at John’s Grocery, the iconic familyrun corner market in Iowa City that offers an impressive stock of imported and microbrewed beer and is known as Dirty John’s to locals. “Working at John’s really opened my eyes to the sophisticated nature of beer,” says Hotek, one of the grocery’s infamous Bier Guys. “It’s an art form. It’s complex and extremely enjoyable.”

Hotek’s interest in beer may have started at John’s, but it hasn’t stopped there. It wasn’t long before he found himself reading beer magazines and researching beers online. “It helped that I had friends in beer trading circles,” he says. “I attended beer samplings with people who really knew a lot about beer. They helped me to develop my palate. It is particularly helpful if you enter into it with an open mind and enthusiasm.” Interest in craft beers has expanded in the Iowa City area, partly he thinks because bars have begun to offer microbrewed beers like New Belgium, brewed in Colorado. He likes to attend beer tasting events and share what he’s learned with customers at John’s.
“At one time, I was like 98 percent of beer consumers. I drank an American light lager style beer, but I look at it differently now,” he says. “I’m not a beer snob, but I’ve found beer is just as sophisticated as wine. There’s a vibrant

MULLIGAN’S
Reader suggestion time. Week Five of the Monday Night Football Bar Tour brings us to Mulligan’s, 1060 Old Marion Rd., in Cedar Rapids for a matchup between the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins. If you couldn’t tell from the name, golf is the primary theme of this bar. Golf wall decorations, fairway green paint on the wall and their menu is even littered with golf terminology. The bar is pretty spacious, with plenty of high top bar tables throughout and lots of neon signs and posters. Mulligan’s even has a small stage area in the back for live music. They also have an outdoor patio where you can enjoy the last few fall nights during halftime. I’m happy to announce that Mulligan’s sets the Monday Night Football Bar Tour record for number of TVs. There are 30 — in all the right spots, so everyone has a good line of sight to watch all the action. I was also very happy to see the game being shown in high definition. Mulligan’s has a wide assortment of draft beer, as well as a full variety of tallboys and bottles. The bar is large, with TVs mounted on the inside of the cabinets, so you can have a large TV all to yourself if you choose not to sit at a table.

The food a Mulligan’s is great. Pizza, burgers, sandwiches and even some entrée items. I particularly liked the spinach and artichoke dip. The pizza didn’t blow me away, but it met my expectations for ‘bar pizza.’ And finally a bar with a Monday Night Football special. Mulligan’s offers a pitcher of domestic beer and a burger basket for $10. That’s a fantastic deal and one that is hard to pass up. Mulligan’s is a great spot to catch the game and it will be rolled into my regular rotation. Good food, lots of TVs, good service and plenty of space for you and your group to catch the game. This one is a winner.

Iguana’s Grill
ANDREA DIETZENBACH PHOTOS
KEEPING IT FRESH I venture forth yet again into the unknown lands of North Liberty. Forgive me, I’m almost done reading a Lord of the Rings-esque book and seem to be channeling the language. My last dinner in North Liberty was a huge success so I figured there must be so much more to see. We stuck to the main drag and found a nondescript strip mall housing several options. Chinese or Mexican? Hmmm… heavy decisions. We chose the comfort and warmth of a giant basket of chips and salsa. Iguana’s Bar and Grill seems like a fairly average Mexican joint from the exterior but the interior rises
above. Once inside you’re greeted with refined decorations from unique sculptures on the walls to giant, flowery paintings. It’s bright and colorful and very clean. The menu ranges from traditional fajitas to enchiladas with a few specials thrown in. Of course, there is the requisite basket of chips and salsa. The chips were crispy and salty and the salsa fresh.
chicken, cheese and bean. The other thing that makes Iguana’s stand out is their prolific use of garnish. No weak little piles of lettuce pushed to the side. Each plate is a masterpiece of color and vitality. My chimi had an actual salad on the side, none of that shredded iceberg junk.
I really enjoyed Iguana’s for their verve and freshness. Their nourishing Feeling frisky, I ordered the food and drink imbibed me with chimichanga, spicy chicken wrapped the strength to travel on to untold in a flour tortilla and deep-fried. My fortunes. Shew. It’s a good thing I’m husband had the enchilada platter, almost done with that book. which was comprised of no fewer than four types of enchiladas: beef, — ANDREA

Greening your life. One step at a time.
THE 3 P’S OF THE NEW GREEN BOTTOM LINE For businesses, the introduction of the new triple bottom line represents both a challenge and an unprecedented opportunity. Not sure what we mean? The Triple Bottom Line is this: the concept of creating a new three-part business model to create a sustainable business operation.
The three P’s of this model are: People (Social Well Being & Equity) — Recent studies have shown a dramatic increase in the value employees (young and old alike) place in working for organizations that promote the well being and equity of their work force, along with a commitment to the community and environmental stewardship efforts that work toward the common good.
●
Planet (Environmental Protection & Resource Conservation) — Many companies are amending existing or creating new Mission, Vision & Values policies that adopt a commitment to the education and awareness of sustainable business practices and products. ●
Profit (Economic Prosperity & Continuity) — Business survival in our society is determined by a company’s ability to turn a profit. Innovative companies are adjusting to the changing economies and global challenges by adjusting their operations to satisfy both their shareholders and stakeholders. ●

His books are aptly described as “fables” and sometimes I feel like he tries to force feed his readers life lessons rather than let the reader figure out the lesson on his or her own. Nevertheless, if you are up for some soul searching try one of these titles by Coehlo.

Cedar Rapids Theology on Tap invites you to the Chrome Horse Saloon for drinks and faith discussions every Thursday of October starting at 7 PM.
This all-female quintet is an eclectic collection of musicians who banded together out of the shared experiences of creating music across genres and being female in a male-dominated industry. “We’re driven by a desire to create a community and sisterhood,” says percussionist/“the ever sexy glockenspiel” player Katie Roche. “It’s not a moneymaking project; we’re not driven by the typical motives.”
The group was founded by Annie Savage and Amy Finders (no longer with the group) in 2006 as “the answer to the question, ‘Is there a musical life for women after children, family and career?’” The answer was yes, as the five Purdies have balanced new children, families, careers, moving and losses both for the band and personally. Despite considerable life changes in a short amount of time, the Awful Purdies consider it a point of pride that they’ve made time for the music, even releasing a self-titled album that will be officially released Oct. 17 at The Mill in Iowa City. Though the sound can be classified as folk music, every song has a distinct flavor that often bears little resemblance to the previous track. This is partially due to the album being about 40 percent covers, but the

The women are each distinctive singers and songwriters, and the mix and match nature of the songs means the sound never gets tired or repetitive. The origin of the band’s curious name is something of a guarded joke, though each member was pretty open with what it means to be an Awful Purdy. On one hand, some think of it as a clever pun, as in “Well, aren’t you awful’ purdy.” Roche thinks of it as a statement on women with musical talent who can do more than just look good on stage. The Awful Purdies are awfully talented and an awfully original take on the Eastern Iowa folk scene. — BLAKE BLAKE MOVED TO IOWA ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO AND OVER USES THE WORD AWESOME. They may not have quite made Merriam-Webster’s (yet), but Iowa City’s Awful Purdies certainly speak, and sing, a language unique to them.
What they are driven by is the music, and each other. Playing something akin to folk music (the members of the group described their style as “new folk,” “psychofolk” and “eclectic”) — the principle elements and storytelling nature lend themselves most closely to folk music comparisons — the Awful Purdies have used the group as an outlet to their talents and sense of community and friendship.
