I’m just

SAYIN’ {

Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.

I have been on more than my fair share of

roadtrips.

They’re sort of inevitable when you have a car in one state and want that same car in another state, 4,000 miles away. Sure you could ship it, for a couple thousand dollars. Or you can buck up and pack up and hit the road. Which is what I did. FOUR TIMES. Four times I have driven between Alaska (where I grew up) and Iowa (where I first moved to go to Coe College). FOUR TIMES. Did I mention it’s a 4,000-mile trip? Shall I do the math for you? That’s five days of driving. And not leisurely driving, not stoppingto-take-in-the-sights driving. We’re talking pedal to the metal people. Five days, 800 miles a day. What doesn’t sound fun about that? The first time it was novel. An adventure. Three girls. One SAAB. The open road. Broken down on the side of that road. Camping. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting for an alternator for the SAAB to be flown in from Germany. The second time, it was my car. My car that slid under the rear bumper of a Ford truck somewhere in Canada when a dog ran into the road. My car that

was totaled but we fixed anyway because it was cheaper to pay the mechanic than fly my sister and I from Fort St. John, British Columbia to Cedar Rapids. The third time. I should have known better. But how could I have known that teens in a small Canadian oil town had recently been entertaining themselves by smashing car windows? Let me tell you how fun it is to drive 2,000 miles with plastic for a window because it would have taken a week to truck a replacement window to town. Not fun. Not fun at all. The fourth time. I did know better. And I didn’t want to do it. But I did. And I only regretted it once. When my friend filled my car with diesel instead of unleaded. At least the mechanics who siphoned the gas out got a laugh. So perhaps you can see why I’ve sworn off any expeditions that can’t be accomplished in less than a day. Which is why I love Eastern Iowa. From here you can drive to more than a half-dozen states in less than a day’s drive. Now that’s my kind of roadtrip. Even better, from the Corridor, you can be in Cedar Falls/ Waterloo, Dubuque or the Quad Cities in less than two hours. Not to mention everywhere in between. And that’s all if you want to leave home. If you don’t there’s still plenty to entertain right here. So, hop in the car and hit the road. Just don’t forget this issue of Hoopla to help guide your travels.

A petition opposing a bicycle ban on Iowa roads has attracted more than 2,000 signatures, nearly three times as many as signed a petition seeking to ban bikes from county roads. The petition affirms the right of bicyclists to use Iowa roads, reminds motorists of their responsibility to watch for bicyclists, and argues that while the number of cyclists has increased in recent years, the number of accidents involving bicycles has not.

The area has good disc golf courses like Sugar Bottom and Turkey Creek. In comparison to golf, there are no fees, purchasing discs is cheaper and it takes less time to play. It is a game that everyone can play; just watch out for the trees during your tee offs.

A majority of my summer has been filled with sport-related activities like softball, sand volleyball and running. It is easy to play with friends or play a pickup game. Also, it has helped me to live a healthy lifestyle. Being active for 30-minutes a day can improve one’s health.

I love food, and my belly is satisfied with their sushi. If you are looking good food and want to watch the chefs prepare it, check them out. Since it is walking distance from my place, it is hard to resist the temptation of their food.

Ahh. Back to campus time. Ain’t it grand? Sure. For about five seconds, until the novelty of a new year has worn off and you’re back to whining that same old bored tune. Well. We’re here to help you break out of that campus bubble. Whether you’re in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids or somewhere in between, you may not realize what treasures lie in your backyard, let alone down the road a bit. So tuck these pages away and the next time you’re bored, hop in the car and take a road trip. In life, one is faced with many challenging decisions. Where do I go to college? Should I get married? Do I really have to give my brother that kidney? And where should I go out to dinner on a Thursday night in Iowa City? It’s the last question that’s truly hard. Walking the streets of downtown Iowa City there are loads of yummy places to go. Fortunately, the wind blew my friend and I right to the door of OneTwentySix.

The menu at OneTwentySix is ripe with succulent dishes such as roast rack of lamb and gnocchi with eggplant caponata. Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.

MUSICNOTES {

You’ve heard their music. Now know their story.

8 Seconds

THE TALENT: Michael Flack (lead vocals/acoustic guitar), Brian Troester (guitar/vocals), Heather Warren

(vocals/keyboard), Jim Lee (bass/vocals), Michael Jensen (drums) and Tim Fry (sound and light tech) THE SOUND: Contemporary country THE GIGS: 6 p.m. Aug. 22 @ Odie’s Outdoor Music Fest, Odie’s Bar and Grill 1650 Dows St., Ely; 9 p.m. Aug. 28 @ Chrome Horse Saloon, 1202 Third St. SE, Cedar Rapids; 9 p.m. Aug. 29 @ Scooters, 10537 Shaw Rd., Anamosa; 9 p.m. Sept. 10 @ Wildwood Smoke House Saloon, 4919 B Walleye Dr. SE, Iowa City THE REST OF THE STORY: www.8secondsband.com

Eight Seconds is a high-energy country band that delivers a show that speaks to music lovers of all kinds. “We’ve heard numerous people comment, ‘I don’t like country music, but I love 8 Seconds,’ ” Mike says. The band was first formed in 2001. Mike left the band in 2007 to pursue other interests, but decided to start the band up again in late 2008. “I decided to rebuild 8 Seconds with some of the finest musicians the area had to offer,” he says. “Since then, we’ve managed to regain and build upon our loyal fan

base as well as push the boundaries of our music.” The band may be locally based, but they’re no strangers to big-time gigs. They’ve opened for nationally known country acts like Dierks Bentley, Teri Clark, Jason Aldean, Josh Gracin, Andy Griggs and Tracy Bird. They’ll add Randy Houser to the list Sept. 10 when they open for him in Iowa City. One of Mike’s favorite memories is of watching of the big-name acts they’d opened for climb out of their tour bus window to secretly sneak away and “go party up the town.”

8 SECONDS

“That is something I think we all would do,” Mike says. Although 8 Seconds is currently a cover band, they’re going to perform originals starting in September. WINTER PACKINGHAM WORKS WITH CHILDREN DURING THE WEEK AND SPENDS HER WEEKENDS ENJOYING THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE.
