I’m just
SAYIN’ {
Get the full scoop on Hoopla, what’s in this issue and whatever else we want.
For this week’s issue, we asked local young adults was even more interesting was the long list of restaurants that people liked enough to write-in. Thirty different places to do a difficult thing. We asked them to choose their favorite things about living here. with a combined 39 votes. Why is that tough? Because in many instances there is just too much to choose from. In our admittedly unscientific poll, we first compiled our own lists of the best places to dine, drink, volunteer, live, etc. Then we asked local young adults to pick their faves from our lists. Often they agreed. But equally as often there were plenty of write-ins. We didn’t take it personally. There’s no way we could have possibly compiled a list of all the coolest places in the Corridor. There are just too many. Plus it comes down to personal taste. Take, for example, the dining category. Our original list contained places like the Irish Democrat, Cibo, Atlas and Vitos. Plus my personal fave Phong Lan (a once best-kept secret in Cedar Rapids that is rapidly increasing its fan base). So yeah. Many of our picks rose to the top, but what
What does that say to me, other than that there’s A LOT of restaurants in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City and in between that I need to try? Well. For one. No one has any excuse to say there aren’t plenty of places to dine in the area. If you ever need a reminder or an idea, just check out our list at
HooplaNow.com
In fact, for complete results of the entire survey, check out our Web site. On pages 14 and 15, we printed the top five in each of our 12 categories, such as place to work, shop, volunteer, live, eat, go out on the town as well as favorite event, festival, recreation activity or sporting event, winery or brewery and cultural attraction. The top five is interesting enough. But for the full story, go to the Web site, where you’ll see the exact number of votes each place received (like how it was a close race between Mercy Medical Center and University of Iowa for top employers) or how CSPS/Legion Arts narrowly missed snagging a top five position in the cultural attraction list by only two votes. So check it out. And if you disagree with any of the results, share your thoughts with us. We’d love to add to the list.
I’m just sayin’,

Construction kick off
CEDAR RAPIDS — Construction is underway on renovations to the Iowa Theater Building, following official approval of funding from FEMA, which means the $7.8 million project is on track to be completed in time for the building’s scheduled grand opening with “The Producers” in February 2010. In addition to repairing flood damage, the project will give the theater a massive facelift. FEMA has obligated a $4.04 million to the project. FEMA’s funding, combined with $1.5 million pledged to the project by Vision Iowa and funds raised through private donations and Hall-Perrine challenge grants, mean that all required funding has been identified for the $7.8 million project.
Concert on the lawn
CEDAR RAPIDS — Orchestra Iowa will open its 88th season with “Carmina Burana” at Brucemore Sept. 12. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the performance begins at 7 p.m. Three choruses and three critically-acclaimed vocal soloists will join the orchestra to present this program featuring Orff’s “Carmina Burana.” General admission tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the gate. Tickets may be purchased online at www.orchestraiowa.org or by calling (319) 366-8203 or 1 (800) 369-TUNE (8863). Tickets are also available through the

To market, to market
CEDAR RAPIDS — Join the City of Cedar Rapids and Project for Public Spaces to learn more about the proposed year-round Cedar Rapids City Market on Sept. 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Horizons, 819 5th St. SE. Interested food growers and producers, local businesses and existing or start-up vendors are encouraged
to attend and provide feedback. To help with the vision, feasibility and site selection, Cedar Rapids City Market, Inc. has hired Project for Public Spaces (PPS), a New York-based nonprofit planning and design organization. This meeting is to gain a better understanding of the Cedar Rapids vendor base, interest in the project, as well as the necessary elements needed to make the City Market successful. Nathan J. Franzen, 31, Marion
Technical Project Manager @ Rockwell Collins
What he’s wearing:
“I found several pieces of this combo on a business trip to London. The shirt is from Thomas Pink. The tie is from a shop whose name I cannot remember. The watch was purchased at a kiosk in Gatwick airport while waiting for my flight home. The vest is part of a three-piece Ralph Lauren suit that I’ve had for years. One of the great things about a three-piece suit is that you can break it apart. You can’t see it in the photo, but I am wearing solid navy blue pants — not the matching pants from the suit. The cuff links are Tiffany sterling silver knots. I like them because they are understated. They don’t scream for attention, but if you do choose to notice them, they are like little sculptures. In general, this outfit illustrates what I mean when I say that style is about the details. The subtle blue stripes of the vest pick up on the colors the necktie, but don’t try to compete with the loud shirt. The silver cuff links draw your eye to the bezel of the watch and vice versa. And, of course, my shoes match my belt.”

I love Cedar Rapids
An Insider’s Guide to the Corridor
In these pages you’ll find real Corridor residents sharing what they love about living here. From dining to nightlife, shopping to athletic endeavors, the arts to our natural surroundings, there’s plenty to love. So much so that we couldn’t fit it all in these pages. For more, check out www.HooplaNow.com
Quality of life Churches: Living Waters Kingdom Church, 240 Classic Car Ct. SW, Cedar Rapids; The Corridor is home to hundreds of churches. Search by denomination and location at http:// gazetteonline.com/category/life-home/ faith-and-values/church-directory Family: U.S. News & World Report recently named Cedar Rapids as one of the best places to grow up for low crime, strong schools and green places to play. Check out the report at www.usnews.com/articles/business/ real-estate/2009/08/19/americas10-best-places-to-grow-up.html
Cymaron Dawson 30, Cedar Rapids I am proud to be a Cedar Rapidian. I am the senior pastor of Living Waters Kingdom Church. I was born and raised in Cedar Rapids. In the summer of 2002, I relocated to Milwaukee, Wisc. I spent four years there, but it never quite felt like home. Although I was surrounded by all of the amenities of city life, I often wanted to click my heels together and say “there’s no
place like home.” I found myself not only missing my family, but I missed seeing familiar landmarks. I would miss the nights that I spent sitting by the duck pond at Noelridge Park clearing my thoughts. I also remember a time when I got sick and found myself in the precarious situation of not knowing where the hospitals were. I remember thinking that if I was in Cedar Rapids I would
have easy access to either Mercy Medical Center or St. Lukes Hospital and not have to be concerned about the quality of care I would receive. Here, I appreciate the fact that I don’t always have to look over my shoulder. I am very proud of the fact that there are cultural entities such as the African American Historical and Cultural Museum
of Iowa. After I moved to back to Cedar Rapids to start Living Waters, they graciously opened their doors to us. After the devastation of the flood, I became even more proud to live here, because this city showed the world that although we may be relatively small in size, we have enormous heart, resiliency and strength. I love Cedar Rapids.
Augusta Restaurant

brick interior and mismatched chairs and friendly staff. You are sure to see the chef pop his head out a time or two from the kitchen to see his patrons.
After my multiple Augusta experiences, I can never order similar menu items The New Orleans-style shrimp and at any other restaurant because they fried mushrooms with garlic aioli will just don’t compare. No one can touch knock your socks off. I have never had the mushrooms, shrimp, fried boneless mushrooms like this! Any combination of chicken, tenderloins or cherry bread appetizer, soup and salad and entree will pudding. I would name all the menu satisfy you to no end. You can indulge items but I don’t have the space. in a simple sandwich or stretch out your culinary experience into a five-course See for yourself, go to Augusta for meal. Whatever your choice, you will be your next date night, Sunday brunch or impressed. The aura of the restaurant lazy lunch and your taste buds will be only enhances the food with its exposed changed forever! Enjoy! PA GE 2

DOWNTOWN IOWA CITY BOUTIQUES Ashley Funkhauser, 27, Iowa City
From Iowa Avenue to the Pedestrian Mall on College Street, downtown Iowa City is filled with great places to shop. I love leisurely walking around from door to door to see what’s inside. With the addition of some new and unique boutiques this summer, the Ped Mall is starting to take on the feeling of the small Chicago neighborhoods. My favorite addition is Catherine’s Cheap and Chic. Like Catherine’s, its sister store, Cheap and Chic is full of fun, girlie clothing and accessories. However, as the name
states, the store is cheap! There are so many great things that you can easily walk in, pick up five items and spend less than $50. It’s great to have a store downtown that fills the niche of trendy clothes on a budget.
The Iowa Artisans Gallery is a place unlike any other. The one-ofa-kind jewelry and art pieces are as fun to purchase as they are to see. I am never disappointed with the shop and leave thinking “Until next time.”
I still love Dulcinea, Domby, Velvet Coat, Catherine’s and another new addition, Inbox. If one store doesn’t have what you’re looking for, it’s only a short distance to the next. They are full of fun clothing and accessory pieces ranging in price from “I’ll take three” to “Whoa, that is more than my car loan payment!”
Some stores might look intimidating, but don’t fear the unknown. You will be surprised as to what you find in downtown Iowa City and how much variety is in its small space. My list is only a small portion of what you’ll find and it is truly an experience everyone needs to have in the Corridor.
Iowa City shopping Catherine’s: 7 S. Dubuque St., women’s wear. Catherine’s Cheap & Chic: 105 S. Dubuque St., women’s wear. Domby: 128 E. Washington St., women’s wear. Dulcinea: 2 S. Dubuque St., women’s wear. Inbox: 114 S. Clinton St.;

The Mill Restaurant
Freeze the best of the 1990s grunge scene, add great food and obscure, yet lively, bands and jam pack it all into an old brick house with low lights and a simple bar and you’ve got The Mill. The menu is as eclectic as the crowd it draws, ranging from pasta primavera to black and blue burgers. The dining experience is complemented by its outdoor patio, and frequent live music. It is hard to peg The Mill specific to any genre. I’ve heard bluegrass, rock, alternative, jazz fusion and just about every other category of music. It’s large back room area has become a gem in the Iowa City music scene. This room is also used for trivia on Sunday nights, where $1 and
quick wits could send you home with a pocket full of cash and memories of fun times. The Mill is a wonderful experience, from the food to the people. It is quite easily my favorite place when I’m in the area. I recommend it to anyone!
A landmark of downtown Iowa City nightlife since 1962. Renowned for live music, food and friendly atmosphere. It’s a restaurant, it’s a bar, it’s a stage, and the clientele loves it all. Indian Creek Nature Center
Indian Creek Nature Center
Erica Zito, 38, Cedar Rapids
My 8-year-old son is the bug whisperer. While other boys his age can rattle off Tom Brady’s football stats, my son can tell you the detailed differences between a stink bug and a leaf bug. So when Indian Creek Nature Center introduced its Bug Academy, we were quick to sign up. Indian Creek Nature Center offers woodlands, prairies and wetlands to explore and miles of trails to hike. While perhaps best known for its spring Maple Syrup Festival and fall Honey Fest, Indian Creek offers so much more.
My kids have been attending the excellent programs and camps at Indian Creek ever since I can remember. As preschoolers, they built an eagle-sized nest with sticks and watched bees in the hives. They saw salamanders, turtles and snakes up close, and they learned to identify different frogs’ songs. As elementary students at day camp, my kids learned fire safety and cooked biscuits in a campfire. They built their own fishing poles
and tried their hands at fishing. They erected a natural shelter and learned how to use a compass. My son even had his last birthday party at Indian Creek — complete with a snake search.

Wig and Pen Pizza Pub THE PIZZA PERKS OF BEING A GROWN-UP Sometimes I like to kick back and reflect on how great it is to be an adult. I usually need these moments when adulthood really sucks to remind me that there are benefits too. For example, you can stay up as late as you want, watch whatever you like on TV and eat anything you want for dinner. Remember when you were little and you vowed, “When I grow up, I’m going to have pizza for dinner EVERY night!” Well, I’m pleased to say that some weeks I come pretty close to that goal. And to up the ante, not only can you eat pizza whenever you like, you can have any kind of pizza you choose. I practiced this particular perk when my husband and I recently went to lunch at Wig and Pen. Share a pizza? That’s infantile! After several minutes of unsuccessful negotiation over pizza toppings we decided: we are adults; we can each have our own pizza! Freeing ourselves of the restrictive bonds of common sense we each ordered a small pizza exactly to our liking. I prefer lots of toppings: loads of veggies and a
variety of meats. My husband sways between the safety of pepperoni and beef to the bold flavors of ham and pineapple. I ordered The Pub Special with Italian sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onion and sweet Italian peppers on a crisp thin crust. There was loads of cheese and the sauce was nice and tangy, not too sweet and really fresh. My husband ordered the Chicago Style Stuffed Pizza with pepperoni and beef. It was filled with gooey cheese in a deep, pan crust with fresh tomato sauce on top. I am always a fan of a good Chicago deep dish and this one was done well. Yes, we had lots of pizza leftover and we put on quite a display of gluttony when the waitress filled our two-man table with piles of food. But I’m a grown-up, dammit, and I’m going to order as much pizza as I please. — ANDREA

What’s it like in Gus’ on a Hawkeye game day?
Crazy. It’s wall-to-wall people, and it’s like I’m just running around with my head cut off pretty much. It depends on how Iowa’s doing too. If they’re having a good year, it stays pretty consistently busy. If they’re stuggling, it tails off as the season goes on.
Tell me about your game room.
It’s basically four pool tables, two dart boards, a shuffleboard, Golden Tee Golf, Silver Strike Bowling, Big Buck Hunter.
And you have a couple of leagues?
We have a dart league that goes yearround, and then a couple of in-house pool leagues, and a Silver Strike league.
What drink is most popular with pool players? With dart players? The pool players, they like their big mugs of ice cold beer. The dart league, you have your beer and your team shot. There’s always team shots in dart league. They like stuff with Red Bull.
One thing that might surprise your regulars.
A lot of people probably don’t know how I got the nickname Chopper. When I first started working in landscaping, I went in for an interview, and (the interviewer) was really interested that I used to sell Cutco knives, so i spent an hour and a half in the inteview, cutting stuff with the knives. We never really talked about what I knew, they just kept finding stuff for me to cut. They started calling me Chopper, and it stuck. — ANNE

BOOKTALK {
Natalie Ditmars and Caitlin Slessor give you the Cliffs Notes. What they are reading right now and which books they can’t wait to crack open.
ADD T.C. BOYLE TO YOUR MUST-READ LIST T. Coraghessan Boyle, better known as T.C. Boyle, is an extremely prolific writer. His most recent book, “The Women,” follows countless others including “After the Plague,” “Drop City” and “The Inner Circle.” After reading some rave reviews of “The Women” I decided it was time I tried some T.C. Boyle. On my search, I found “THE TORTILLA CURTAIN” released in 1995. If T.C. Boyle’s other books are half as good as “The Tortilla Curtain,” I am definitely going to add them to my list. “The Tortilla Curtain” follows the lives of two Los Angeles couples. The first, Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher, are your typical American family. They have a 6-year-old son, a mortgage and good jobs. Delaney writes a column for a magazine and Kyra is a high-end real estate agent. They worry about the same things many Americans worry about, declining home values and the desire to keep their neighborhood safe. In stark contrast to the Mossbacher’s are Candido and
America Rincon. The Rincon’s are illegal immigrants living in a makeshift shack not far from Mossbacher’s safe secure neighborhood. They have no papers, no money, no jobs, don’t speak English and to top it all off, America is pregnant. Try as they might, work and money seem impossible to find. While the Mossbachers’ and Rincons’ lives seem completely unrelated, as you can imagine, they crash into each other in a bizarre, yet oddly believable, way: Delaney behind the wheel of his Acura runs into poor Candido. Events unfold, biases are revealed and a truly intriguing story results.
is hard to not feel a pang of sympathy for both Mossbacher’s and Rincon’s; it is also hard to not want to hit all of them upside the head for the stupid choices they make and completely absurd comments that come out of their mouths. It is only right to mention that T.C. Boyle has Iowa ties. He attended the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop in 1974 and received his doctorate from the UI in 1977.
“The Tortilla Curtain” examines touchy political and social issues but manages to do so in a non-judgmental way. In a time when immigration and violence are still hot political issues, and declining home values are on everyone’s mind, this book offers an honest look at these issues from both sides of the fence. It

THE TALENT: Chad Wallenberg (guitar/vocals), John Morgan (drums/percussion), Jim Scharosch (bass/vocals)
THE SOUND: Rock, pure and simple THE GIGS: Saturday @ Next Door, 1736 16th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids THE REST OF THE STORY: www.knubby.net The most entertaining rock in Cedar Rapids might just come from a self-proclaimed “power trio” of 40-somethings with a funny name and a mascot that looks like a blob of, well, Knubby.
reserved for rock without qualifiers. They string together catchy hooks and infectiously goofy lyrics , making them stand out in a crowded local scene.
Spotted mostly at Tornado’s Grub and Pub in Cedar Rapids, Knubby is a local gem formed nearly two years ago by a group of longtime friends who took it upon themselves to take the music seriously and themselves a little less so. Thus, Knubby — a “purposefully obtuse” name according to Chad Wallenberg, guitar and vocals — and the little green slacker-blob were born.
Their sound is much refined between their first and second CDs (bassist Jim Scharosch has a recording studio in his basement where he’s produced a number of albums, including both of Knubby’s), largely the result of time off during the floods when the band was able to devote more effort to their songs. The result is a unique sound that not only let’s them stand out locally, but distances them from their influences and gives them their own identity.
Knubby has a Green Day sensibility (fun, Dookie-era Green Day, not lame, socially conscious modern Green Day) and a rock sound reminiscent of their many influences — The Who, Cheap Trick and more recent throwbacks like Queens of the Stone Age and the Racquenteurs. Their brand of rock — look especially for “Giant’s Foot” and “Feral Hogg” on “Knubby 2” — leads to the kind of involuntary vertical head rocking

“16 TO LIFE” COMES HOME TO IOWA The Landlocked Film Festival offers many pieces in many places, but the centerpiece of the fourday event is the Iowa premiere of “16 to Life” at the Englert Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
“16 TO LIFE”
The tension mounts for Darby (Mandy Musgrave, left) and birthday girl Kate (Hallee Hirsh), who’s mortified to be sweet 16 and never been kissed. The film, “16 to Life,” will have its Iowa premiere during the Landlocked Film Festival in Iowa City, then will move to Elkader for Sept. 3 showings at 4 p.m. in the Elkader Cinema and 7:30 p.m. in the Elkader Opera House.
Both Smith and Hirsh are looking forward to the Iowa festival, seeing people with whom they worked, seeing audience reaction to the film and Known as “Duck Farm No. 13” to the folks around seeing the landscape again. McGregor, where most of the footage was shot “My mother’s very favorite spot is McGregor,” in October 2007, it’s flying under a new name and generating industry buzz, winning awards at Smith says. “With the rolling hills and big cliffs by the river, it’s really a stunning-looking place Method Fest in California last spring. where Grant Wood painted. The people locally were as nice as you could possibly imagine.” But during the final phases of the nearly $1 million film, teenagers invited to test screenings The festival, which runs Aug. 27 to 30 in several just didn’t like the “Duck Farm” name, says director Becky Smith, 53, an Okoboji native now downtown Iowa City sites, also features topical workshops, panel discussions and screenings for living and working in Los Angeles. more than 80 films, ranging in length from two minutes to two hours. “It wasn’t hip to them,” she says. “They thought it was about farm life. As much as the adults — DIANA NOLLEN, THE GAZETTE liked the title, we needed to change it to make it accessible to teenagers, because a large part of the film is about teenagers.” It’s a coming-of-age romantic comedy starring Hallee Hirsh, now 21. She’s been acting all her life, instantly recognizable as Tom Hanks’ muchyounger aunt in “You’ve Got Mail” and Rachel Greene on “ER.” She says this role eclipses all the others on her lengthy resume. “It’s my absolute, most favorite thing I’ve ever done,” she says. “I can’t tell you how much I love the role, how much I love the script and how much I loved the actual event of shooting it.”

“This movie sparked that completely,” Hirsh says.
She took her character’s focus on China and its Cultural Revolution to heart. She traveled to China with Smith to present the film to university students in Beijing in May, and is now studying cultural anthropology at UCLA, including an intensive Chinese language immersion.
