The hashtag itself was coined by award-winning YA author Corinne Duyvis, and is used to recommend books about diverse characters written by authors who are from that same diverse group themselves. #OwnVoices is about authenticity, and the stories themselves are honest and insightful, illustrating a true diversity of YA voices. They are filled with powerful stories that are windows into views and experiences that reveal the complexity of their characters and reflect the depth of knowledge of the writers who created them.
