How to use this diary This diary is part of a series of creative diaries that develops storytelling in 3 to 6 year olds using the story, language and characters from The Vegetable Plot Season 1 CD. This diary features Aspara Gus, or “Gus”, the fearless leader of The Vegetable Plot who accompanies us through this storytelling adventure! The goal of this diary is to give your child the basic structure and tools to develop his/ her own narrative thinking, an extremely important skill to develop as the foundation for expressing what we know about ourselves and other people. Storytelling has been around for thousands of years yet almost all plots follow a similar structure with a beginning, middle and an end. Our story has been divided into 6 parts or frames represented by 6 symbols found on the top right corner of every activity page.These symbols serve as a visual guide to help your child build the story using the storyboard at the end of this diary. The use of two different fonts identifies the information that is meant for you, standard font, and for your child, cursive. By the end of this diary, your child will bring his/her “Little Green Heads” finger puppets to life. These represent the 5 disciplines found in S.T.E.A.M. education: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math indicating the multidisciplinary aspect of this storytelling project.

You are the hero or “protagonist� of your story. Draw a picture or stick a photo of yourself in a garden!
The main character (protagonist) of our story is Aspara Gus, also known as Gus. He is a green asparagus rich in vitamins B6 and C. Gus is a fearless vegetable leader campaigning for healthier diets!

Materials » 3 shades of green “EVA foam” (or green felt from light to dark green) » Fine-tip permanent pen (or very fine paint brush and acrylic paint) » Glue gun and hot glue, alternatively, white all-purpose craft and wood glue » Scissors » Sewing needle and thread » Pencil and paper All gluing steps using a hot glue-gun must be done by an adult. » Time: 30mins for 4 finger puppets The instructions in green can be done by children 4 years and above.
Instructions For each finger puppet you will need: • one fig.1 in “eva foam” • one fig.2 in green felt • three fig.3 for the leaves in green felt You can choose to make the leaves in different shades of green or all the same. • Trace the finger puppet shape templates onto a piece of paper and cut them out. Now draw the cut-out shapes onto the eva foam. • Pin the paper pattern onto the fabric and cut around it. • Use the fine tip permanent pen to draw the eyes, eyebrows and mouth of the face. You could paint the mouth green if you prefer. (Drawing A)

• When your glue gun is hot, glue the strips of the puppet’s body together, overlapping them in order to make a ring that comfortably fits over your child’s finger. (Drawing B)
Now fold the strip downwards and glue over to join the ring of the puppet’s body. (Drawing C-b)

• Once dry, take the strip of felt from fig. 2 and put a small amount of glue on one end. Stick it to the back of the puppet’s face in an upward direction. (Drawing C-a)
• Take each felt leaf and fold it in half, lengthwise. Sew a small, slightly crescent shaped seam along the fold. Then open the leaf and stretch the felt into shape. (Drawing D)
D • Glue the upper leaf into place first and then the other two leaves on each side. (Drawing E)
