Since it began as a bi-annual publication back in 2009, Malaysia Tatler Homes has grown to become a popular bimonthly read covering multiple aspects of luxury interior design. What people love most about the magazine is that they get a sneak peek into the most beautiful, luxurious homes from around the region. We are very glad and honoured that the owners of these homes – some of whom are very private and not keen on publicity – have deigned to trust us and open up their homes to us, allowing us to showcase their beloved sanctuaries in the pages of our magazine. In this issue, faithful readers may notice some changes in our pages. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce a fresh new look for the magazine; along with our regional Tatler Homes from Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia and the Philippines, we are all concurrently undergoing this revamp. We have divided the magazine into four sections for easy navigation. Shop covers what’s new in the interior scene, so if you’re in the market to procure an item for your home, then this section will be the one to check out. Style on the other hand, covers interior and lighting trends, thematic spreads and interviews with renowned designers and industry experts. Spaces gives you interior design ideas for specific areas in the house – ideal for sparking novel ideas for home makeovers or renovation projects. What was once called Aesthetic Abodes is now Sanctuaries, and this time we have included additional design tips so that you can take away more than just breathtaking home designs. LIGHT SHOW The current crop of artistic lights – kinetic, sculptural or whimsical – dazzles the senses and injects an animated vibe into living spaces
I
f you happen to be visiting the Netherlands sometime this year, you’re likely to encounter a number of van Gogh-related festivities commemorating the 125th anniversary of the artist’s death. In January, the Het Noordbrabants Museum, located in the artist’s homeland region of Brabant, hosted an exhibition of works inspired by the famous painter. Among the more arresting exhibits was Studio Drift’s Flylight, a site-specific light installation that interacts directly with its surroundings.

Consisting of delicate glass tubes that light up at random, in response to external stimuli – say, the movement of a museum-goer – the light mimics the behaviour of a flock of birds in flight. This natural phenomenon was translated into specially developed software that controls the motion of the lights, resulting in a mesmerising display that isn’t pre-programmed. In the same month, multibrand luxury furnishing emporium Macsk held its official launch in Singapore. What stole the show wasn’t the store’s impressive interior architecture or the furniture, but a

Lasvit blown-glass chandelier, the Alice, that appeared to shimmy in tune to a classical music soundtrack. Kinetic light fixtures such as the Flylight and Alice are part of a growing trend. What started out as site-specific installations in designer hotels, concert arenas and exhibition spaces has filtered into the domestic environment as technology (LEDs, motors, circuit boards) improved and became more accessible to homeowners. Homeowners, too, discovered the pleasures of an emotional, sometimes surreal experience of living in spaces animated by sculptural lights. Here are some of the most atmospheric lights – some kinetic, others static (but no less imaginative) – that will bring a magical touch to any home.
INGO MAURER LED Wallpaper Traditional wallpaper receives a shot in the arm – or in this case, a jolt of electricity – in Ingo Maurer’s LED Wallpaper, conceived in conjunction with Architects Paper. Made from a large electronic circuit board printed on paper, it’s available in 60cm panels, with each panel housing 840 LEDs. You can choose the design it illuminates using a small control that allows you to manage the colours and brightness levels.

I L L U M I N AT I O N NEMO Uma Giancarlo Tintori’s Uma light for Nemo challenges conventional notions of a chandelier, with an inner steel structure supporting an elaborate assembly of transparent methacrylate (a type of plastic) tubes. When lit, Uma transforms into a futuristic sculptural object, reminiscent of a spaceship in Åight. The effect is nothing short of spectacular.
FLOS Wall Rupture Humans, by nature, are curious beings. Our inquisitiveness is so strong that we may even ignore obvious signs of danger in pursuit of knowledge. This instinctive behaviour inspired designer Thierry Dreyfus to conceive the ingenious Wall Rupture for Flos - a crack in the wall with golden inner surface lit by warm white LEDs (resembling a wall Ässure).

BAROVIER & TOSO Spinn Chandelier Like some of the other examples showcased here, Barovier & Toso’s aptly-named Spinn Chandelier gives a new twist to an old classic. Mouthblown Murano glass elements are arranged in a spiral and lit by halogen bulbs to form a graceful helical pattern. Two versions are available, one in clear crystal and the other in a gold variant.
BACCARAT Marie Coquine Baccarat’s Marie Coquine is a whimsical take on the traditional chandelier. Created by wunderkind designer Philippe Starck, the Äxture comprises a 12-light Baccarat Zénith chandelier and an umbrella, which has an ivory-coloured canopy that softens the cast light and a decorative chestnut wood handle to complete the illusion. Imaginative yet functional, Marie Coquine comes in a limited edition of 120 pieces.
INGO MAURER Flying Flames For a theatrical effect that will have your guests talking about the setup for months to come, Ingo Maurer’s Flying Flames is hard to beat. Like a high-tech version of the airborne candles in the Harry Potter series, Flying Flames juxtaposes LED circuit boards (the ‘candles’) and downlights in a Åexible chandelier system. A canopy board and magnets allows you to customise the number and arrangement of the two elements as you please, while the length of the Äne wires can be adjusted to create a rhythmic display.
LASVIT Alice For the Alice chandelier, 29-year-old designer Petra Krausová was inspired both in part by the tale of Alice in Wonderland as well as the fragility of blown glass, to which she drew parallels with the ethereality of Åowers. Alice therefore takes on a vaguely
Åoral silhouette, with glass ‘petals’ that ‘open’ and ‘close’ in tune to the tempo of a chosen soundtrack. This motion is powered by 19 engines and 12 circuits. Illumination comes courtesy of 28 static LEDs. At 2.4m across and 1,300kg in weight, Alice is a guaranteed conversation piece.
VISIONNAIRE Gourmand There is no doubt that La Conca’s Gourmand Åoor lamp for Visionnaire will command a presence in any room, so unique is its design: the gold printed leather lampshade with baroque detailing contrasts with the gold-Änish scales that clad the lamp’s metal base, creating an artisanal look.

Pillars of Growth Organising chairman of the first Prestigious Developer Awards, KK Chua talks about his motivation behind hosting an event centred on honouring the best in the property industry
What was the motivation behind organising the Property Insight Malaysia’s Prestigious Developer Awards (PIPDA) when there are already other property awards out there? Unlike various overseas entities that organise the majority of property awards in Malaysia, we have a better understanding of our local developers and the market. By assessing developers based on their committed projects and track record, we highlight not just established developers, but also
up-and-coming ones that have delivered on their promises to their customers. PIPDA is different from other awards because of its judging process. The winners are determined by the Malaysian Property Investors Association, our editorial board and the readers who voted on an online poll. What were some of the difficulties faced during the organising of the event? We received an overwhelming response to the awards. It was very challenging and difficult to determine the winner for each category, as the vote tally for some of them were quite close. However, as long as the developer received the most votes in its category, it would be declared the winner. The results were audited by HML & Co, a renowned local auditing firm. What was the biggest take back from this event? By organising this event, we have brought all the developers together. This networking opportunity does not happen often enough. Even though they may be competitors,
they can still achieve synergy among them. A lot of good networking took place with the exchange of business cards, and I am sure some deals were also made. This will help developers become stronger and well-connected with their peers. Is there a story behind the design of the award trophy? The theme of the award ceremony and trophy was black and gold. The colours as well as the artistic and fluid design of the trophy were intended to reflect the commanding prestige of the awards in Malaysia. Please share a tip with our readers as an insider of the property industry. The one thing you should know is to invest as early as you can. Don’t look for the best property as there is no such thing. Don’t time the market. It is not about timing the market. It is about your time in the industry.

How did you get started in the property industry? I have been in the property industry for more than 13 years. I started out as a real estate negotiator before opening up my own real estate agency. About 11 years ago, I was motivated to start investing in real estate because of my clients, who are serious investors. They would buy a few properties every year and make profits from the sale. As an investor, I get to reap the rewards from the appreciation in value as well as the positive rental yield from the properties.

Could you tell us more about your latest project, Alila Salalah? We just started working on the project and I’m thrilled. The site is on an amazing stretch of land overlooking both the sea and a tranquil estuary. Our design reflects the tranquil nature of the site but it also embodies one of Alila’s brand pillars of reinterpreting local culture through modern design. What is your design style? It is contextual and modern in the sense that it is inspired by the place itself but with a modern flair.
The founder and creative director of Blink Design Group, Clint Nagata believes in the importance of first impression as the hope and foundation of a lasting idea How did Blink Design Group begin? I was inspired by my friend Bill Bensley when I first visited his studio in Bangkok. I thought I’d also like to have my own firm one day and have as much fun as he was having. So I left WATG as the youngest partner, packed up and moved to Bangkok to start Blink Design Group. Eight years later, we are fortunate to have grown into four studio locations with projects from Istanbul to Seoul and throughout Asia, working with brands such as Alila, Regent, Rosewood and Six Senses. When it comes to the design process, do you play by any rules?

Most certainly. I always trust my first instincts when it comes to the design of the project – from the best way to approach the site to the interior style. This is why I’ve named the firm Blink; it’s about the power of first impressions where, at the blink of an eye, we all form ideas that are surprisingly correct. As a designer, what inspires you? I find inspiration from my clients and the environments that I design in. For example, the feeling of tranquility and the sub-tropical climate of the site has inspired the design for the new Alila Salalah that my team is working on.
What words of wisdom would you give to those who are planning to enter or are already in the design and creative world? As designers one could say that ideas are our currency. It’s essential to understand that to be good you don’t have to be different. But to be different you have to be good. WWW

Who – designers or not – have influenced your work today? Two people close to me who have influenced and inspired my work are Jaya Ibrahim and Ralf Ohletz. Jaya had an incredible flair and understanding of how to create a seamless luxury experience. Ralf, with whom we designed the Regent Bali (now known as Fairmont Sanur) and Regent Phuket, has the uncanny ability to create incredible hotels that are game changers, like The Setai in Miami and The Chedi Muscat.

NIKKI HUNT INTERIOR DESIGNER Having spent the last 11 years specialising in interior design, the founding partner of Design Intervention continues to be deeply passionate about all things related to creativity and design. Hunt’s work has been featured in the International Design Review – a compilation of works from the top 100 interior designers from around the globe, for two consecutive years. To date, Hunt is the only Singapore-based designer to garner this achievement.
Charm of Chinoiserie The iconic Orient-inspired style, which entices with its intricate motifs and rich colours, remains a popular style adopted by modern homeowners. Nikki Hunt shares on the origins of Chinoiserie, its uses and subsequent evolution he word Chinoiserie is French and means ‘in the Chinese taste’. It describes a decorating trend that has been used for centuries to infuse drama, and a sense of fantasy into some of the world’s most glamorous interiors. Many popular Chinoiserie motifs will be instantly recognisable to us in Asia and people often mistakenly assume that the style originated in China. But it is, in fact, a trend that began in Europe in the 17th century.

CONFUSED IDENTITIES Back then, the Europeans didn’t distinguish between these Eastern cultures, and everything from China, Japan, India and Persia were termed ‘Oriental’. Owning a piece of, ‘japanned’ furniture, as some pieces were called,

became the height of fashion amongst Europe’s elite.They were fascinated with all things Asian and throughout the continent, aristocrats began decorating their castles and palaces with Chinoiserie elements. As authentic products were rare, European manufacturers produced imitations, often adapting traditional Asian designs and symbols, altering scale and proportion to better suit European taste. In essence, Chinoiserie is the original East Meets West design style. TYPICAL CHINOISERIE DESIGNS A typical Chinoiserie motif would be the dragon image, which the Europeans regarded as a symbol of the mystical Eastern lands. Other common features of Chinoiserie decoration are figures wearing Chinese clothing. Some artists chose to copy figures from genuine imports but in many cases the images

they drew were products of the designer’s imagination. Birds, flowers and fanciful landscapes were also popular, as were pagodas. CHINOISERIE TODAY In a reaction to the minimalism that has dominated the design scene for much of the past decade, designers are now embracing luxury and pattern. Thus, there is a return to glamorous, colourful interiors and Chinoiserie is at the forefront of this trend. Twenty first-century Chinoiserie is still glamorous but it is a glamour mixed with humour invoking a sense of luxury without formality. Chinoiserie rooms don’t have to be busy: the look is more streamlined and crisp than it was centuries ago. This style is a much-used tool in my design team’s arsenal and elements of Chinoiserie pepper

many of our projects. A Chinoiserie backdrop enables us to combine family heirloom pieces within a modern living environment so that we can personalise the homes of our clients. We also use it to spice up interiors with little architectural interest. And, because Chinoiserie reflects so much of the culture and colour of life in Singapore, we often incorporate Chinoiserie accents to give our projects a sense of place. Personally, Chinoiserie is a particular favourite of mine, because I am drawn to the light-hearted, playful feeling that it infuses into a room. The stylised oriental figures, patterns and colours make me smile. And there can be few better reasons to decorate your home than to create an environment that lifts your mood and makes you feel good. For me, Chinoiserie does just that.

MOVEMENT IN TIME
Over the course of his 40-year career, award-winning Swiss-French architect Bernard Tschumi has proven that architecture isn’t simply about structures and forms, but the events and actions happening within it
ernard Tschumi has always been interested in concept and experience. In fact, long before his first completed project, the contemporary of Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas was already widely known for his theoretical drawings and written texts, like The Manhattan Transcripts developed in the late ’70s. In it, he transcribed aspects normally

removed from conventional architectural representation, such as the complex relationship between spaces and their use. Central to Tschumi’s belief is that there can be no architecture without events, actions or activity. This remains central to his work, where architecture must originate from ideas and concepts before becoming form, and cannot be dissociated from the events and movements of the living beings that inhabit it.

Similarly, the buildings he designs respond to and intensify the activities that occur within them, and the combination of spaces, movements and events change and creatively extend the structures that contain them. “I would like people in general, and not only architects, to understand that architecture is not only what it looks like, but also what happens in it,” he says. HUMAN CENTRED APPROACH Winning the international competition in 1983 to build the Parc de la Villette, Tschumi’s idea for the new unprecedented social and cultural park was based on activity instead of nature, where its many buildings, gardens, bridges and fields served as the staging ground for concerts, exhibitions, sporting events and more. “I never looked at it as a path to success,” he says. “I was really more interested in the making of architecture. I like to quote Orson Welles the filmmaker, who once said, ‘I don’t enjoy cinema, I enjoy making cinema.’ Most of my work has been involved with questioning what architecture really is.” Tschumi’s first commission introduced the notion of deconstruction to architecture. Constructed on the site of the Parisian slaughterhouses and a national wholesale meat market, the large-scale Parc de la Villette in the northeastern edge of Paris (housing one of the largest concentration of cultural venues in the capital, including the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, Europe’s largest science museum, a music museum, equestrian centre, three major concert venues, performance halls, theatres, the prestigious Paris Conservatory, themed gardens and children’s playgrounds) was a major project of the French government and a testing ground for a new philosophy and approach to architecture. Thirty-five iconic bright red follies – giant twisting, intersecting structures that are at once industrial and sculptural and act as architectural representations of deconstruction – give organisation to the park, helping people navigate throughout the space.

KEY DESIGN and I knew absolutely nothing about building codes, construction phases, the role of consultants, etc. I had to learn everything in an incredibly short period of time.” His latest project, the renovation and redesign of the Paris Zoo, which reopened last April after being closed for five years, emphasised the natural habitat to better advance the zoo’s pedagogical and ecological agenda. MIXING CULTURES Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1944, Tschumi is the son of the wellknown architect, Jean Tschumi. The US permanent resident with both French and Swiss citizenship notes, “My father was born in Switzerland, but studied architecture in Paris. My mother was French and introduced me to literature and film. My father used to take me to construction sites on Sunday afternoons, but I first got really interested in literature and philosophy before I decided to become an architect while visiting Chicago at age 17.” As such, he often references other disciplines in his work, such as literature, film, art and philosophy. A graduate of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, he established his firm in Paris in 1983 with the commission for the Parc de la Villette, then opened his headquarters, Bernard Tschumi Architects, in New York in 1988. A leading thinker in contemporary architecture, and as the former dean of the Graduate School of Architecture at Columbia University (1988 to 2003), he introduced the Paperless Studio – the first platform for education in digital architecture – and continues to teach there. Tschumi expresses his hopes for the future of architecture, “I’m very optimistic about the future of architecture because I think nobody else can really think like architects do: combining the most abstract and the most material, being able to deal with extremely complex constraints while having to arrive at a precise and articulate response. Architecture has a long way to go and will always carry excitement for future generations.”
Zoo de Vincennes in the suburbs of Paris (2014) Situated in the historical Parc de Vincennes, the reconstruction of the 15-ha zoo – housing animals from French-speaking territories divided into Äve different biozones – focused on preserving its important conservationist heritage while creating a new mode of animal presentation and educational experience.
Vacheron Constantin Headquarters in Geneva (2005) The exterior of Switzerland’s oldest watchmaking company showcases a continuous monolithic metal cladding, which contrasts with a glass atrium containing circulation elements, such as walkways, stairs and an elevator, which are also made from glass.

What kind of cuisine is available? We serve three meals a day plus a high tea, which is available to guests prior to heading out for the evening game drive. Dinner is served at a number of locations around the lodge, depending on the weather: sometimes in the dining room, other times on the step and often under the magniÄcent Karoo starlit sky. We also frequently offer a romantic dinner à deux in the guests’ suites if requested – very popular with our numerous honeymoon couples or to accommodate the intimacy of a marriage proposal! The Victorian homestead houses three en-suite bedrooms, and the restored 250-year-old barn two en-suite bedrooms. A jacuzzi on the deck and a covered patio with comfy sofas allow guests to enjoy the views down the Valley of the Bushman. Family antiques embellish the interiors. “Part of my family are from the 1820’s settlers; some of the furniture came from them,” says Sarah. “Others were sourced locally in Graaff Reinet, which is a quaint little town. My maternal grandmother’s name is Van der Vywer, and we have a priceless collection of Boer War plates commemorating the Boer War on the side of the Boers made by Limoges; these are displayed in an antique dresser in the dining room.

Here, guests may take advantage of the services of a personal ranger, chef, butler and nannies. The concept was for a contemporary Karoo house embodying elements of Karoo design with a modern twist using light, colours and structure inspired by the veld that surrounds the site.

Sarah explains, “Karoo design is simple colonial use of reeded ceilings with mud packed on top to keep the summers cool and the winters warm. The modern rendition of it is using elements such as local stone and local wood.” Built on the site of a Victorian farmhouse and retaining one of the original walls, the stately homestead showcases a warm aesthetic reflecting the local landscape and traditions. It was designed by well-known South African designer, John Zwiegelaar. “The Manor is Zwiegelaar’s inspiration totally and completely,” notes Sarah. “He has a unique way of conceiving the vision and then extrapolating it bit by bit, layer by layer, using height, form, light and colour
to achieve his goals. We were inspired by materials from the veld, old stone walls, stone from other parts of the property, the colours of the white bark of the Shepherd’s Trees and the olive green leaves.” Zwiegelaar skilfully transformed an area once used for raising goats, sheep and cattle into a modern living space designed so that all rooms flow into one another. The dining room leads off the living room and has a bar around which guests may gather for a pre-dinner drink. Divided into two areas, the living room places great emphasis on natural light that floods in through tall windows. The alcoves are decorated with marshmallow comfort cushions for children to have an afternoon nap; they are also perfect

for playing card games. Accommodation consists of four spacious air-conditioned luxury suites with large en-suite bathrooms for up to eight guests. These suites open out on to private patios featuring spectacular views and outdoor sofas. The 21-metre-long infinity pool descends into a natural waterhole where guests may catch sight of wild game that come to quench their thirst. Zwiegelaar designed all the custom-built contemporary furniture in The Manor. They were hand-crafted in Graaff Reinet or Cape Town, by talented local artisans. Sarah points out, “The Manor has light fittings and table bases that were made by an old guy called Talla Crouse in Graaff Reinet, who is an ironmonger. Plus most of the wooden vanity units in the bathrooms were made locally.” KAROO LODGE A restored homestead with modern-day amenities but with echoes of its colonial past, Karoo Lodge caters to individual travellers
and families, or may be privatised for up to 20 guests. Each suite is traditionally decorated and balances comfort and the beauty of the African bush. Think refined country-style living with front-row seats of breathtaking views of the mountains and magnificent wildlife. The three suites in the main homestead open onto a wide wraparound veranda with outdoor chairs, and the Sibella suites overlook a waterhole that attracts abundant birdlife. Sarah remarks, “Karoo Lodge was the family home of farmers, then our family home. It’s filled with old wooden floors and yellowwood beams on the ceilings laid over reeds, which have been used for centuries to cool a house in summer and keep it warm in winter. We modernised it somewhat and built all the colonial cottages for our friends. As we have pretty fussy friends, we tried to make them as usable as possible with large open spaces and great views out over the Cape Vulture mountain in the background.”

living room without a coffee table is like a face without eyebrows (Google it and you will understand) – certainly incomplete, a little strange, probably even downright bizarre. It may not be the most significant feature in a particular space but the absence of one rarely goes unnoticed. If we were to sit back and think about it, coffee tables are probably one of the highesttraffic areas in our homes: it is where the family gathers for a few rounds of Monopoly, friends hang out with cups of tea, a place where you get your last-minute work done and sometimes hurriedly eat your lunch. Therefore, it is crucial
to pick a coffee table that is suitable in terms of size and practicality. A useful rule of thumb offered by HGTV Design Star judge Vern Yip is that the surface should be about one or two inches lower than your sofa seat, though do consider a taller table if you often entertain. It will make it easier for guests to place their things on the table. Yip also shares another guideline: the 18-inch rule. From the edge of your seat to the edge of the table, 18 inches is an ideal distance. It is close enough to reach for a glass of drink or even put a magazine down, yet far enough to stretch out your legs. Below, we delve into the coffee table market, which is filled with products of various sizes, shapes and styles.

I
t is a bright, sunny morning. Streaming through the huge skylight, the daylight pleasingly falls upon the dining table and lights up the area which Datin Penny Yong would later describe as one of her favourite places. Set against a gallery wall mostly filled with warm-hearted family photos (including a framed Malaysia Tatler cover in which her eldest daughter Mei Ling was featured), the long wooden table naturally becomes the ideal setting for an intimate family meal or even larger gatherings. “There is where we have our breakfasts, Christmas parties, even rotary club meetings,” the lady of the house happily points out. Just like the dining area, the rest of the house was constructed and decorated to be big on warmth and cosiness. From the very beginning, her husband Dato’ Kevin Yong had roped in Daniel Charles, the managing director of DACS Construction and a good friend, to help realise their dream house. The couple share similar tastes in home interior and have unanimously agreed to an airy, open-planned living space with a high ceiling, which Charles have successfully delivered despite the tough building codes in the residential area. The first step of the major makeover process involved stripping down two adjacent properties and rebuilding one from scratch. The invasive surgery saw that the new house comes with a big lawn that encourages people to move outside and enjoy the outdoors. Next, Charles designed the interior in a way that there would be no walls separating some of the major sections on the ground floor, such as the living hall and the aforementioned dining section, which effectively simplifies traffic flow in the house. A kitchen counter may have separated the food preparation area into a zone of its own but the owners’ clever integration of bar stools allows visitors to be a part of the cooking preparations, emphasising on the friendliness and approachability of the entire space. And thanks to the high ceiling, skylight and sliding doors that open up to the lawn, the sense of roominess and seamlessness is further enhanced. While it is not always easy to create a

welcoming and homely ambience in a space of considerable size, the couple has managed to achieve it by incorporating many pieces made of light colours and solid wood. But what truly makes the Yongs’ home one of a kind is how they throw in shots of colours and personality amidst the subtle, neutral palette, sometimes in corners that could have been easily overlooked. The dining table is a good example; a colourful patchwork table runner, a vase of tropical flowers plus a few pieces of citrus fruits served in simple blue platters all come together to paint a lively, summery hue on the wooden surface. Datin Penny credits most of her eyecatching decorative decisions to the interior magazines that she had been reading and referring to throughout the home-dressing process, though she may not have been able to pull off such a feat without an eye for beautiful things. Several decoration items around the house are, in fact, second-hand goodies and charming collectibles she spotted in flea markets and inconspicuous antique shops, such as a tiffin with oriental design and a cobalt blue chest that was found in her favourite flea market in Manila. She likes that they all have a story behind them.

“Apparently, the tifďŹ n used to belong to her grandmother – or at least that was what the shop owner told me,â€? she laughs. Apart from vintage stores, Datin Penny also frequents Thamesa. “It is a furniture store on Jalan Universiti, PJ and a very good source for Fusion Asian pieces,â€? she adds. Her other great passion – art and reading – is evident in every corner of the home where a few walls have been dedicated to some of her favourite local artworks. Stacks of her favourite novels are also placed in the living room for guests to browse through. While the architecture and design are mostly driven by the couple’s personal preferences, their children are given the freedom to decorate their own bedrooms which are located on the top oor next to the gym room-cum-dance studio. The youngest daughter’s room, for instance, is infused with both style and soul with an artful mix of handmade, designer and personal pieces. stacked into a decorative pile on the floor and the girl’s collection of jars, perfumes and scents peppered the wall-mounted open shelves. On the whole, accessories in powder pink and dusty rose add girlish warmth to the otherwise neutral scheme. Datin Penny’s aesthetically-inclined gene seems to have been passed down to her daughters as well. Now when she looks back at the renovating process, Datin Penny remembers it to be “fun but also stressful at the same time, because what we imagined may not always be practical when translated into reality. But we learned a lot along the way,” she says. One of the biggest lessons she had learned is, “Never decorate a house until you move in. Unless you have a very precise concept in mind, take your time to explore. Don’t rush and wait patiently for what you want. It will come. Some of the pieces are lucky finds at the most random, hidden shops. That part of the process is the most fun.”

or Rachel Lee and Tan Siow Chua, coming home after a long day often entails spending time with family. Both directors of SC Auto Industries, a company that designs and manufactures premium luxury coaches, much of their free time is also poured into grassroots activities. So making time in their busy lives to catch up on the day’s happenings with the rest of the family or entertaining friends and relatives is something they relish. The four-storey bungalow was designed and built from the ground up. “This house has everything we need, including a gym. Because it’s a bungalow, there are also many windows and doors,” Lee says, of the 6,500 sqft, six-bedroom property. SIMPLY STUNNING To work on the interior spaces, they engaged Designworx Interior Consultant. Terri Tan, design director of the firm, says, “The owners approached us during the construction stage, so it was easier for interior intents to be incorporated into the building.” Working together with the architecture firm Wong Kok Yan Chartered Architect, the interior designer could address several issues that wouldn’t have been possible had the house been already built. The interior designer explains, “For example, we preferred not to have conventional air-con grilles for the ducted system and suggested 50mm wide channels instead. This was worked into the air-con system in part, thanks to the mechanical expertise of the owner who had the resources in his coach manufacturing facility to customise the ducts.”

She adds, “He was very hands on throughout the whole process. He has experience with space planning and sometimes will even sketch out his intention on paper so that all consultants involved can understand and be on the same wavelength.” An engineer by training, he was also trained as a chef. As someone passionate about cooking – he cooks for the family almost every night – he’s just as keen to have a well-equipped and beautifully designed kitchen. ADDING AND ACCESSORISING The details include sliding timber doors to close off the wet kitchen. Designworx also equipped the kitchen with a ‘zhi-char’ style hob and kitchen appliances from De Dietrich. Designworx kept the living, dining and dry kitchen spaces free flowing so that guests could mingle easily. Fronting the dry kitchen is a dramatic kitchen counter clad in Fantastico onyx. “The feng shui requirement stipulated something red in the dry kitchen space. We decided to design the island as the focal point and kept the surrounding cabinets neutral,” Tan says.

She added that Lee also loves warm tones, especially bright hues of flowers. So colours like red, plum and burnt orange were added as accent elements. A notable space is the entertainment room, which features geometric patterns that help to distract attention away from the low ceiling. Different types of marble, Arena Classico marble in the living and dining rooms for example, can be seen throughout the home. The powder room is clad with the dramatic Statuario marble. The master bathroom dons the more subdued Dark Walnut marble and Honey Beige marble. Designworx’s strength is in its attention to detail, which Lee appreciates immensely. Pointing out the small gold touches that were added onto the door frames, Lee says, “There are small details that people won’t notice at first. My friends would remark that they love the doors, but it’s upon closer inspection that they would realise why.” malaysia tatler homes

omeowners Kevin and Joyce Teo bought a semidetached house at Mount Sinai Avenue with the intention of doing some Addition and Alteration (A&A) works so that the home could accommodate their family of six. But with an existing floor-to-ceiling height of only 2.7 metres and taking into consideration the fact that it would entail major A&A works to create sufficient space for the whole family on a challenging sloping site, the couple took the architect’s advice and decided to demolish the existing house, which was rather old anyway, and go for a total rebuild. Apart from a difference in level of almost two storeys between the front and the back of the house, the other major challenge was the long and narrow plot configuration. Architect Edmund Ng, director of Suying Metropolitan Studio, introduced an airwell that breaks up the massing into two volumes, de-linking the front and back of the house, while allowing cross-ventilation and natural daylight to penetrate the deep plan. Apart from a difference in level of almost two storeys between the front and the back of the house, the other major challenge was the long and narrow plot configuration
architects from Singapore who was invited to exhibit his work at the 2014 Venice Biennale, Ng’s reinterpretation of the traditional courtyard draws reference from the shophouse typology. “Our forefathers knew exactly what they were doing with the shophouse, which has worked very well and which remains relevant even until today,” he says. TO BOLDLY GO The block at the front makes a statement with its off-form concrete structure and timber screens, a palette which Ng refers to as “honest” materials. To him, “Beauty arises from the purity of the materials.” While off-form concrete and timber screens are not considered new materials, they are less commonly used in home construction. Homeowners tend to go for walls that are plastered and painted over and screens fabricated from aluminium due to concerns over consistency and maintenance. “We kept an open mind and

we were very excited when the architect proposed using off-form concrete,” Kevin recalls. “Initially, we were a little unsure as to whether the off-form concrete and timber screens would complement each other, but as a nature lover, I knew that you cannot go wrong with wood. I definitely did not want metal screens and I am okay with the ageing effect of the wood over time,” he adds. Ng echoes Kevin’s sentiments. “The non-uniformity and flaws are part of their beauty,” he agrees. In the evening, the house glows like a lantern, with slivers of light peeking through the timber screens. “The timber screens provide just the right balance of privacy and view, while allowing for crossventilation and natural light, as compared to a glass box form. Besides, a glass box would not have provided sufficient wall space for our art collection,” Kevin explains. The most striking piece has got to be the painting of Lee Kuan Yew malaysia tatler homes

by artist Ren Zhen Yu, from Ode to Art. It occupies an entire wall in the living room and it was a surprise present from Kevin to Joyce, who fell in love with the painting at first sight. UPHILL CHALLENGE Due to the sloping terrain, the entry level can be considered the basement even though it inclines slightly up from the road. By digging further into the existing slope, a larger footprint is created to accommodate a bigger car porch, as well as a proper lobby, media room and powder room in the basement. Unlike a typical house where the living room is usually located on the entry level, in this case, Ng elevated the living and dining spaces above the basement. To Ng, this reflects a contextual design response. “By elevating the living room above the road, we enhance the privacy. The park directly opposite the house also means that the homeowners can enjoy an unblocked treetop view from their living room,” Ng explains. Indeed, the living room and the outdoor terrace in front appear to extend all the way to the park, creating the sense of spaciousness that the homeowners wanted. The furniture is also deliberately kept low to enhance the sweeping vista. Of special interest is the 4.5-metre long coffee table imported from Bali, constructed from a single piece of wood.
It was originally a dining table whose legs were shortened to transform it into a coffee table, which can also double up as a bench or even a platform for the children. The dining area and dry kitchen occupy the block behind, separated from the living area by the airwell. By using full-height movable glass walls on either side of the airwell, the various spaces within the two blocks flow seamlessly into one another and out towards the landscape. The openness surrounding the dining and dry kitchen give the rear massing a pavilion-like quality and allows the occupants to feel and see the raindrops rippling in the reflective pool at the base of the airwell. The light-filled and cool interior bears testimony to the effectiveness of the airwell and natural cross-ventilation and exemplifies what a contemporary tropical house is. A VERSATILE MIX The second storey is the children’s zone, where two bedrooms in the front block are connected to another two in the rear by bridges across the airwell. Kevin and Joyce’s four children will eventually have their own rooms, but as they are still young, the two girls, Maxine, 10 and Mia, five, share a room, as do their brothers, Zenith and Zander, who are eight and six respectively. as a study and a playroom. Being tucked against the party wall dividing the family’s semi-detached from the adjoining house, the boys’ room would have been rather dark so Ng introduced a skylight that runs the length of the room. Diffused daylight casts down the wall, illuminating the row of plants along it and brightening up the interior. The master suite on the top floor is Kevin and Joyce’s sanctuary. This is where the couple relaxes over music or exercise after tucking the children into bed. The off-form concrete wall extends all the way up to this level and sets the tone for the room; the rest of the monochromatic composition just falls into place. The high, sloping ceiling creates a loftiness that makes the room feel exceptionally spacious. By terminating the wall just shy of the roof soffit and inserting glass pockets below the monopitch roof, the room remains naturally well-lit even on overcast days without needing artificial lighting. Again, the choice of low furniture accentuates the horizontal and vertical sense of space. The master bath deserves special mention not just because it is bigger than a studio apartment, but because the skylight and plants create a semi-outdoor, garden setting that elevates mundane routines into celebratory rituals. Part of the skylight is non-covered and the light showering of rain into the bathroom makes you feel so close to nature. The long basin is carved from a single piece of granite and the rough surface lends contrast to the smooth marble and glass, while a long piece of wood, with its edges deliberately left uneven, serves as a step up to the bath and adds a touch of warmth to the predominantly cool palette. This is Kevin and Joyce’s first homebuilding project and Kevin admits that it was not without its challenges, but special nonetheless and the end result is worth it. “I think I got what I wanted – a home with abundant natural light and which is wellventilated, one that is spacious, open and not boring,” Kevin concludes. malaysia tatler homes

e asked for an apartment in Paris, and you’ve given us a palace,” said the homeowner to London-based South African-born interior architect Louis Henri Buhrmann. For their home away from home, the multi-generational family who works closely with French manufacturers and wanted a central base in Paris, required nothing but the best. They requested for an ultra-glamorous interior that displayed a mix of traditional French style, modern elegance and high-tech performance, with clearly defined entertaining and personal spaces. Without any restrictions of budget, Buhrmann then went about remodelling and modernising the apartment, located in an 1850s Haussmann building. He was given carte blanche to use the best possible materials and craftsmen to create a completely bespoke design concept that is the very picture of French sophistication and 21st-century comfort.

TABULA RASA Stripping down the apartment to its bare bones, Buhrmann rebuilt practically every room from scratch. He says, “The architecture in Paris rarely disappoints. With ceilings over four metres high, the apartment is a true gem. Having worked on listed buildings in London’s Mayfair, I have a real respect for the history of a building. I kept the wooden panelling in the dining room; it was too good to remove. We applied a translucent pearlescent finish to give the wood lustre without distracting from it.” For this apartment’s design, Buhrmann was partly inspired by Art Deco, especially the designs of French architect ArmandAlbert Rateau – one of the most exclusive designer-decorators of the 1920s known for his Art Deco furniture. A COMPLETE VISION The new residence comprises four bedrooms, five bathrooms, four reception rooms and a high-tech media room disguised as a formal French library with silk-covered walls and fake leather books, which conceal malaysia tatler homes

top-of-the-line built-in speakers and home cinema equipment. Incorporating highend technology throughout, the apartment is equipped with an intuitive, customdeveloped programme that controls climate, audio, lighting and security via iPods that dock discreetly behind each door. Guests entering the home are welcomed by a freestanding stained glass window in the entrance hall depicting a colourful, statement-making peacock feather motif, paying tribute to the Belle Époque, an era of peace and prosperity when the arts flourished. The result of the combined efforts of skilled tradespeople on three different continents and craftsmen in London, it also serves as a room divider for privacy, separating the public and private areas of the apartment, while enhancing the amount of light in the entry. “We spent over a year selecting each piece of glass. When we finally put the pieces together, the hallway came to life within a day.” In fact, assembling different pieces on-site proved to be a major challenge. “Various components arrived from

different specialists, often from different countries; we had to hope that everything fitted together,” he discloses. “Only one or two pieces out of a hundred needed adjusting, so it was a success in the end.” MASTER CRAFTSMAN As Buhrmann designs one-off and limitededition furniture, which is manufactured by his brother Balthasar, a master cabinetmaker, almost everything in the apartment is custom-designed and made to suit the space, including furniture, rugs, chandeliers and door handles. Balthasar crafted the main pieces of furniture in his workshop in South Africa, such as the sitting room’s massive three-tiered walnut bookcase inlaid with églomisé and finished with solid walnut detailing, while the other elements were built primarily by family firms founded in the early 19th century. Buhrmann spent six months searching for the right craftsmen. For example, the in-house designed lighting was created using the combined expertise of artisans from Murano, London,

Paris and the US, including the 200-part chandelier in the sitting room. The door handles were developed over the course of eight months by a foundry in New York from a Buhrmann sketch, and the large pots in the dining room’s alcove were fashioned by potter Kate Radford to suit the apartment’s proportions. Buhrmann notes, “For construction, we often try to work with local craftsmen. On this project, they were multi-generational artisans, with the joiners working in Paris since 1880 and the plasterers since 1862. My brother manufactures most of my furniture in Johannesburg; I’m there a lot and can work out the finer details with him.” The walls in the breakfast nook are covered in hand-painted silk, the adjoining corridor features four deep-etched LEDlit glass panels that illuminate the kitchen, the marble floor is similar to the flooring found in the iconic George V hotel lobby, a mirrored wall hides the entrance door and doubles the room’s size, and the guest cloakroom features a solid, aluminium-
framed marble door that merges seamlessly with the wall. Buhrmann purchased artwork from galleries in the UK and South Africa and commissioned art from Guido de Costanzo for the drawing room. He even worked with another artist on a couple of paintings in the media room. He adds, “If I wasn’t an interior designer, I would have been a full-time artist for sure.” Fabrics were sourced from Pierre Frey, Donghia, Turnell & Gigon and Lelievre. THE BOUDOIR Much like a sanctuary, the master bedroom features a private balcony with a view of the Eiffel Tower. The colour palette is cool with silver, grey and royal blue highlights. The storage space is hidden within the upholstered panelling, and bespoke rugs and table lamps adorn the space. Buhrmann reveals, “My favourite room in the apartment is the master bathroom; it’s the client’s too. It was transformed from an awkward, splitlevel space into a perfectly symmetrical, spalike room with four-metre high ceilings.”

or Leslie Lam, design director of Primocasa, there are two types of luxury: one is the traditional, grand, Victorianstyle interpretation, and the other is contemporary and simple, defined by the quality and use of materials. “I certainly relate to the latter,” he says. Looking through Leslie’s portfolio, you’ll see a string of sleek designs that accentuate on functionality and the openness of the space. It is no wonder that when a thirty-something couple with a toddler needed a designer to turn their new Mid-Levels unit into a stylish crib, they asked Leslie. “They trusted my judgment completely, so I had a lot of freedom to inject my personal design sense into it,” he says. “They didn’t have many specific requirements, but wanted it to be upscale and modern.” To achieve that, he first tackled the huge living and dining area. “Although there are two spaces serving malaysia tatler homes

different functions, I definitely wanted to make the entire area as open and whole as possible,” Leslie recalls. “No matter how big a space is, you need to make it look bigger. Some designers like to use mirrors for that and I use ceilings and floors.” He employed a single continuous ceiling that ties the area together, giving it a sense of consistency. Meanwhile for the floor, he created a herringbone pattern with the oak wood boards that extends the space. However, the homeowners insisted on keeping the existing storage room in there – an idea that he was initially opposed to. Addressing practical needs with his signature aesthetic, he designed narrow, discreet cabinets that go along the walls, so they won’t interrupt the coherence of the space. Leslie is glad that the owners wanted to

incorporate leather elements into the design: “Leather is so cool and versatile, one of my favorite materials.” The Italian-made sofa and the headboard in the master bedroom are two great examples. The designer also used stainless steel and glass, which not only create the desired modern feel, but also reflect light. “Dark, moody designs are popular today with the younger generation, but for this flat, I wanted to make it more homey and family-friendly, hence the brightness and grey-and-taupe colour palette,” he explains. ibling rivalry had nothing to do with the two radically different approaches taken in the design of their identical flats. Rather, it was their divergent lifestyles that dictated the contrasting choices of interiors. Older brother Mark Sutch, an executive at Cathay Pacific, wanted a bachelor pad that would reflect his love for wine, cooking and all things aviation. As both a commercial pilot and owner of a growing interior design and renovation business, Ronny was able to combine his life’s passions when working on Mark’s home. The finished flat is a testament to the masculine aesthetic, with a colour palette comprising dark chocolatey-brown leather, handsome solid-wood finishes, and accents in sleek steel and chrome. Upstairs at Annabel’s, baby Imogen bounces about inside the bright and airy interiors. Annabel has the same armchair as her brother but, in this apartment, it’s surrounded by children’s toys, scattered about. The warm and inviting space is adorned with accents in cherry hues, birdspeckled patterns and playful designs. The convertible high chair and wire pendant light in the dining space, as well as the meticulously organised ornaments showcased on the built-in shelving in the living room, capture the family’s taste for eclecticism. It may not look like it, but the layouts of the two apartments are practically identical.

Both have an open-plan living space, two bedrooms and a convertible study, which was outfitted with custom-built furnishings by Ronny and his team. While Mark’s extra bedroom is convenient for when his daughter visits during school holidays and for other guests, little Imogen’s adorable nursery is awash in pinks and pastels. There are other key similarities, too, such as kitschy Union Jack accessories found around the homes showing their common heritage. At first glance, the two living spaces couldn’t be more different, but upon taking a closer look the similarities become more apparent.
