Simple Solutions for an Awesome Outdoor Space Gone are the days of basic backyards outfitted with plastic furniture and folding lawn chairs. Today’s outdoor spaces have evolved to become true extensions of the home offering all the style, comfort and function of an interior living area. From furniture and accessories to fully-appointed outdoor kitchens, the lines between indoors and out have blurred beyond distinction. Regardless of the size of your deck—or budget—there are myriad ways to get in on this timely trend. Following are some simple tips for adding interior function and flair to your outdoor oasis: FOCUS ON FURNISHINGS – Few categories have evolved further or more beautifully than outdoor furniture. When selecting furniture for your outdoor space, look for durable materials that will withstand the environmental elements. MAXIMIZE FUNCTION – When designing your outdoor space, define functional areas for different activities just as you would inside your home. Dedicate a space for grilling that affords a safe distance for guests and children from active flames and irritating smoke. Accompany large chairs with upholstered ottomans to create an inviting atmosphere and increase available seating. Finally, keep your outdoor space organized and eliminate all those pesky trips back and forth into the house with storage components similar to those you’d find indoors. ILLUMINATE WITH LIGHTING – According to a recent Outdoor Decorating Survey conducted by “Casual Living” magazine and ApartmentTherapy.com, outdoor lighting ranks as the number one product that consumers want to add to their outdoor living spaces. Consumers can choose from a wide array of lighting options that can be easily installed into a deck, railing or landscape to significantly enhance the atmosphere and safety of any outdoor living space Source: www.trex.com
SECRETS TO PLAYROOM ORGANIZATION Throughout our daily lives, we often find ourselves with a fairly organized home. The kitchen is in order. The beds stay made most of the time. Our living room remains inviting for drop-by visits. However, as those with children may attest to, the playroom somehow stays the “Bermuda Triangle” of the house, confusing and messy enough to get lost in. Here are some secrets to getting that playroom under control.
PURGE IS THE WORD
Begin with four boxes: Keep, donate, trash, and other room. The toys that are broken, throw away without question. A toy that never held the interest of your child needs to be given away. Bath toys, clothing, the stolen remote control, or outdoors toys need to be put back in their proper places. If something is being held on to simply for nostalgia, i.e. little Johnny’s very first teddy bear, create a memory box or a special shelf for that item.
QUALITY NOT QUANTITY
Ask yourself: “Which toys does my child gravitate towards, and which toys does my child get bored with?” Perhaps not everything should be given away, but consider rotating the play things to create fresh interest. A clear bin or two can be filled with the less appealing items, labeled, and put into a closet. On a bi-weekly or monthly basis, switch out the playroom stash for a renewed sense of playtime.
LABEL, LABEL, LABEL
With so many different types of things to keep track of, it’s easy to become confused about what goes where. For the things that are keeping their permanent space in the playroom, designate containers and label them accordingly. For those with pre-readers in the home, not only include the word, but the picture of the item too. This serves a dual purpose of word recognition and getting toys back to the right spot. Sources: theidearoom.net, hgtv.com
TAME THE LOOSE PIECES
Things like board games and puzzles can easily get their pieces separated. Once just a few pieces are lost, the whole thing can no longer be used, so it’s important to keep these together. For puzzles, try framing the box cover and storing the puzzle pieces on the back of the frame. This serves as both decor and a practical way to keep it all together and up off the floor. For games, take them out of the box and store them in identical, easily stackable containers. Keep puzzles and board games out of reach, so you can keep track of what is being used. Be sure to establish the “one at a time” rule.
HIDE IT AWAY
Curtains can be used to cover and uncover the monstrosity of a toy shelf that sits in the room. Containers under a bed can be slid in after use. A bench with cube storage can be great as a reading nook, and even double as a bookshelf. A small ottoman that your child can sit on, that also has room for dress up clothes or other toys, will help contain the mess that no one will know is there. Don’t get discouraged if it takes a while for your children to understand the new system. They will get the hang of it. On the other hand, if the mess stays messy, take a deep breath, and enjoy your little ones because as we all know, “they grow up so fast!”

WAYS TO DEFINE YOUR SPACE WITH AREA RUGS EXCITING DESIGN OPTIONS CAN SOMETIMES BECOME DAUNTING WHEN YOU ACTUALLY BEGIN TO PLACE FURNITURE IN AN OPEN-CONCEPT HOME. WITHOUT WALLS TO DEFINE SPACES, WHERE DO YOU BEGIN?
AREA RUGS ARE A KEY ORGANIZATIONAL TOOL FOR DESIGNING ROOMS WITHIN LARGE SPACES. WITH A BEAUTIFUL RUG, YOU MAY OUTLINE A FOYER WHERE NONE EXISTED, CREATE A DINING ROOM OR DEFINE A CONVERSATION AREA. THOUGHTFUL PLACEMENT OF AN AREA RUG GIVES IDENTITY TO A SPACE AND CREATES TRAFFIC FLOW THAT MAKES SENSE.
1 2
CREATE AN INVITING FOYER
When your front door opens straight into the room without a designated foyer, you can build the illusion of one with an area rug. This chevron wool rug is a good example of creating a welcoming entrance and makes a nice contrast to the hardwood. Build on the foyer feel by adding a small piece of furniture and some art.
ANCHOR YOUR LIVING ROOM
While big rooms and tall spaces are the inviting aspect of an open-concept home, they also bring a challenge for organizing a cozy space for hanging out. This beautiful living space was undefined until this patterned rug crafted an inviting and cozier conversation area. With high ceilings and big windows, the rug provides an anchor to the room and draws the eye down from the big spaces, making the room feel friendly.
3
DEFINE THE DINING AREA
4
OUTLINE HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS
Just because your home lacks a traditional dining room doesn’t mean you can’t have one. In this contemporary living space, a large rug creates a dining area. Without walls to create tangible zones, a rug is needed to organize the space into useful areas. When choosing an area rug for under your table and chairs, make sure the rug is large enough for the chairs to scoot back from the table without falling off the edge of the rug.
5
Larger spaces often mean there are multiple entrances and exits to both the outdoors and other rooms. This indoor-outdoor rug not only is visually appealing, but it can handle the traffic from the French doors. More importantly, it creates a traffic pattern.
GO OUTSIDE
Large patios can also be transformed into defined, open-air living spaces. A durable outdoor rug can carve out a great outdoor living room from a space without definite borders. This brown rug centers the seating area in front of a fireplace, creating an inviting, cozy space. With walls coming down in remodels and new homes reflecting open-concept design trends, as a professional organizer, I’ve found that rugs provide comfort and beauty while organizing and maximizing space. HOW TO REVIVE YOUR HOME’S MOST USED ROOMS
3. MAX OUT STORAGE WHEN IT COMES TO HOME RENOVATION, it’s smart to focus on improving the home’s most-used rooms, not only for increased functionality and enjoyment, but also to boost the resale value. Kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and game rooms top the list of rooms homeowners would most like to remodel, according to a recent Ranker.com survey. To better the most-used areas of your home, including those cited in the survey, consider the following:
Installing organizational systems in rooms where clutter typically collects is an easy, cost-effective way to improve the function of the room. In bedrooms, maximize closet space with ready-made units you can install yourself, or hire a professional closet organizer to custom-fit units to the space.
4. SWAP APPLIANCES AND FIXTURES Outdated features are not only aesthetically displeasing; they can also
1. BOOST AIR QUALITY Air flow is critical to the health of your home and everyone who lives in it. MAINTAINING A STRESS-FREE BEDROOM
Out of all of the rooms in the house, your bedroom should be the most personal. It should be your getaway from the chaos, and your sanctuary after a long day. Many folks find the opposite to be true of their bedroom. It maybe the catch-all for the things without a place, or be the go-to hideaway for messes from the other part of the home when guests are on their way over. We’ve put together a few tips to help

N O M M O C R O F S P I T Y I S D M E L B O R P G N I B M U PL Whether you’re a new homeowner or have been handy with a wrench, snake and other tools for years, there are some situations that require more than a plumbing amateur’s skills. From the kitchen sink to the toilet and pipes underneath your home, these problems can occur at any time. As a homeowner, you should know how to handle them and when to call a professional.
CLOGGED DRAINS OR TOILETS When the water that’s sitting in a bathtub, toilet or sink won’t go down the drain, you have a problem. Start the repair process by first determining what caused the problem. Is it a clump of hair or a grease build-up? Something worse, perhaps? Whatever the case, finding out about the problem first is essential to finding a solution. Most toilet clogs can be handled with your trusty plunger. The clog in your drain will likely go away if you use a commercial grade drain cleaner. In this case, be sure to wear gloves and a protective mask at all times. If the clog persists after a few times, it might be time to call the professionals. You don’t want to overdo it with the drain cleaner because you might end up hurting yourself and damaging the pipes. Professional plumbers have tools that can help identify the problem much easier, such as snakes and video cameras. They’ll be able to use one of their many declogging tools to remove your clog in no time.
LEAKY FIXTURES A leaky fixture, such as a faucet, can be extremely annoying. Luckily, you only need a few tools and some basic knowledge to fix this type of problem. First, remove the handle by removing the screw that attaches it to the faucet. Then, try tightening the packing nut which is located at the base of the stem. After you’ve tightened this nut, place the handle back onto the faucet and test to see if the leak is gone. If this simple process doesn’t work, you may need to replace some necessary parts, such as washers or nuts, or it may be time to get a new faucet altogether.
BURST PIPE Regardless of the reason, a burst pipe can cause thousands of dollars in damage if not rectified in an appropriate amount of time. The best way to fix a burst pipe is with a C clamp. The first step is to turn off the water completely. Then, place a piece of rubber over the exposed area of the pipe. Secure the rubber by placing a piece of wood on top and then tightening down both pieces with a C clamp. Make sure you tighten the C clamp until both the piece of wood and rubber are secure. In most cases, burst pipes can only be fixed temporarily by homeowners. Once you’ve turned off the water and secured the pipe, call a professional; they might have to replace the pipe altogether.
NO HOT WATER Lack of hot water is an issue that millions of people across the United States experience on a daily basis. If you have an electric water heater, some of the causes may be a tripped circuit breaker, a bad thermostat or a faulty electric heating element. Once you’ve finished the troubleshooting process, the best thing to do is to replace any parts that you find are broken. Most plumbers have extensive knowledge of water heaters and should be contacted immediately.

WHETHER IT’S A JUST A VIBRANT POP OF PRETTY PETALS YOU WANT ADDED TO THE FRONT OF THE HOME, OR A RAISED BED FULL OF DELICIOUS FRUITS AND VEGETABLES, THE RETURN OF WARMER WEATHER HAS MANY HOMEOWNERS REACHING FOR THEIR GARDENING GLOVES. If you’re ready to try out your green thumb or dust off the gardening skills you long ago acquired, there are plenty of ways to achieve the lush vegetation you desire. Check out these tips and tricks for cultivating a thriving and productive garden of any variety.
START WITH A PLAN. Different flowers and plants require different sun, soil and water needs. Keep these factors in mind and consult the seed packets to plan out where each should be placed. Many apps are available to take the guesswork out of gardening, helping you create a perfectly organized plant or flower bed. Some even offer reminders for watering, fertilizing and more.
KEEP WATER IN MIND. Make sure your plan includes a close proximity from plant bed to the water supply.
BE SMART WITH SOIL. Whether it’s a flower or vegetable garden bed or containers, the secret’s in the soil, where roots develop and sustain life. Invest in the proper tools to keep this foundation strong and improve water and nutrient retention, keeping vital elements in the root zone longer.
PLANT CLOSE TO HOME. If you have room, try to grow your plants as close to the home as possible. This makes watering less of a task, and also makes it easier to get to your

precious vegetables when it’s time to harvest.
OPT FOR A PERMANENT SOLUTION. There’s no doubt that gardens require seasonal upkeep, but you can find some ways to ease the tasks. One such solution is a Soil Modifier, which permanently improves the root zone by adding -air and water- holding capacity in all types of soil (unlike peat that needs to be tilled into gardens each year.) The result is better drainage when it’s wet, better water-holding capacity when it’s dry, deeper root growth and healthier plants.
LABEL AWAY. Know exactly where you planted each seed with cute, natural labels. Simply use a permanent marker to mark each plant name on stones in front of each plant row.
BE A GREEN GARDENER. Always opt for eco-friendly, pesticide-free products to use in your garden, when possible. Products filled with chemicals can be harmful to animals when carried through the air with wind. So, dust off that shovel, tighten up the hose and get to growing. Once you have the right plan in mind, you’ll be on your way to achieving the flower or fruit and vegetable garden of your dreams. Source: RISMedia

STAYING ON TOP OF YOUR ROOF’S REPAIR One of the largest, most important lines of defense against the elements, pests, and energy efficiency is your roof. The thing to remember about the roof is that problems can sneak up slowly, so being intentional about roof upkeep and repair is essential to maintaining its quality. Don’t let your roof be a victim of neglect. Here are some basics about roofing to help you on your way to staying on top of the roof.
KNOW YOUR ROOF’S MATERIAL When you own a home, it’s good to know what type of roofing material was used. Beyond the plywood base and the underlayment (the waterproof barrier that protects the underlying wood), are the shingles or tile. Different materials have different life spans, repair expenses, and potential issues that could arise. Asphalt shingles are the more popular of choices and are also the least expensive. These shingles have about a maximum life span of 20 years and are not as durable as some other materials out there. Other roofing materials include metal, wood shingles, clay tile, or plastic polymer. If you aren’t sure which of these you have, then a professional roofer is a great aid in helping you make the identification.
POTENTIAL PROBLEMS
The roof is battered day in and day out, so the list of potential issues is a long one. Maintaining clean gutters is a good starting point; otherwise, water can build up and seep under the shingles, causing water damage to the plywood underneath. Look for signs of unwanted furry visitors or their crunchy, 6-legged counterparts making their way into the roof’s eaves. These critters will leave behind holes and can potentially make their way into the attic. Water spots on the ceiling anywhere on the top level of your home are a strong indication of a roof leak, often times showing up just after a heavy storm. Any sort of heavy moisture signs such as mildew or mold near your roof could also be a sign of a potential leak. The more obvious of problems is a tree limb or other foreign object causing a major injury to the roof, in which case, it needs to be addressed immediately.
look for one that is insured and is well reviewed. Some roofers are affiliated with a specific roofing material or manufacturer. The benefit to this is that the roofer will be well-trained on installation and upkeep of that particular roof. Also, keep a warranty in mind. On top of the roofing material warranty, often times roofing professionals will offer their own warranties that cover their workmanship.
GOING WITH A PROFESSIONAL For most of us, our eyes are untrained to the small problems in a roof that could turn into major issues if unaddressed. For starters, get your roof inspected upon first buying your home and then annually after that. At times, an additional inspection may be needed after a major weather event. When looking for a roofer,
Do not neglect keeping your roof in check and calling on professional help and inspections when needed. Having a grip on these basics will help you stay on top of your roofing repairs.
Every great kitchen starts with great design. Whether you favor clean, contemporary lines or err on the side of traditional, trends today draw inspiration from global sources, incorporating cultural influences from around the world while balancing the practical needs of families. To add worldly flair to your kitchen, start by:
Your Lawn Care To-Do List Taking the time to care for your lawn will offer a huge pay off in the long run. Efficient lawn care and lush landscaping helps to increase the overall value of your home. You’ll be glad you did when selling time comes around!
1. FERTILIZING Providing nutrients to your lawn is good for strengthening roots and increasing the nutrients stored no matter what time of year. It is a good rule of thumb to apply fertilizer about 2-3 weeks before the ground freezes so plants can start to take up some of the nutrients. While the top growth of grass stops, grass plants are storing nutrients and energy for the next season. 2. AERATING Aerating is the process of removing plugs of soil and thatch from the lawn. It encourages deep rooting, improves water and nutrient penetration, and promotes growth of beneficial soil microorganisms. 3. MULCHING If you prefer not to rake or bag grass or leaves, mulching with a mower is an ideal alternative. Be sure to mulch leaves only when they are dry to avoid damp and wet leaves clumping or building up under mower decks. 4. COMPOSTING Creating a compost pile allows you to turn organic material into rich soil. Create a compost pile with decaying yard matter, such as vegetables, grass clippings and leaves, which can provide nutrient-rich soil for spring planting. For best results, alternate layers of “brown,” or high carbon materials, with grass clippings.
Taking these steps will prepare your lawn for selling season. You’ll have the best curb appeal on the block!

Your Windows’ Sparkle Our home is full of intricacies that make it beautiful as a whole. One piece of the house that can really make a difference in curb appeal is your windows. Did you know that a home’s windows should be cleaned on the outside at least twice a year? Often, this task gets neglected because of the lack of know-how on what cleaner to use, what tools are best, or when to hire a professional to do the dirty work for you. We are here to guide you along in making your windows shine.
lint, scratches, and a static charge, causing more dirt. In actuality, the best tools to choose are closer to what the pros use. Soft bristle brushes, squeegees, natural sponges, or chamois towels all work great and don’t do any damage.
S
W
et a date and time. Like we stated above, set aside a day at least twice a year to tackle the task of cleaning your windows. We suggest picking dates in the spring and fall when temperatures are more mild and it also keeps the cleanings evenly spaced. Time of day matters, too. Clean when the sun isn’t directly shining on the windows as to avoid quick drying during the task. This could result in streaks or spots.
C
hoosing the right tools We begin the tool search by first setting out what to avoid. In days past, homeowners would scrub away using things like newspaper, paper towels, old linens, or hard bristles. These items leave behind
hich cleaner to use. The grocery store cleaning aisle offers multiple options for cleaners when it comes to windows. Often times, these are over the top. What works best is sitting right next to your sink or in your pantry: the tried and true dish soap or vinegar. When using dish soap, just a squirt will do the job mixed in a bucket of warm water. The less suds in the bucket, the better. If vinegar fits your supply list better, then use equal parts vinegar and warm water.
T
he how-to. Scrape away debris from the panes using your soft bristled brush. Wet your sponge with the cleaner you’ve chosen and loosen up any dirt. Next, use a presoaked squeegee to swipe downward in even strokes,
overlapping the first stroke with the second and so forth. After each stroke, wipe off the squeegee with a lint free towel or sponge. After all swipes are made, do one more left to right squeegee swipe at the bottom. Use a chamois to soak up any leftover wetness and your windows will shine!
G
et help. If your windows are too high or this process seems too tedious, then hire a professional. A professional window cleaner will ensure a higher quality job and keep you safe from uncomfortable heights. When hiring a professional check to be sure they are insured and come with experience.
Just a quick swipe down this list and your windows will sparkle in no time!
