CHINATOWN A LOST MEMORY
... Chinatown doesn’t mean “town” to me. It was blend with Calgary urban fabric and I couldn’t find the old experience wondering in the hutong (Chinese alley) and countless chances to encounter different things and people. Most people speak Cantonese and I still feel hard to communicate. Why I come to Chinatown? for Chinese foods? Chinese herbs? Or Chinese … Is this a town as we expect even it is ubiquitous? I find culture is not easy to duplicate. A Chinese emperor built an exactly same village near his palace for his parents because he could not convince them to live with him, he also forced all original village residents to move into this new town in order to mimic the social structure that old village had. Surprisingly, people, including emperor’s parents, attempted to escape from this new village after they moved in because they could not find the sense of “home”. However, whenever my parents came to Canada, they instantly make my house as a true Chinatown. Cuisine is my favorite, their stories are my familiar things, their Chinese dilate make me feel at hometown... I told them there are a lots of good places in Calgary worth checking out but their answer was always unpredictable - “what about Chinatown?” They might have good reason to Chinatown to meet their curiosity as a foreigner, but what about people like me who already living in Canada for more than 10 years? What are we seeking? Whatever the scale of Chinatown is in North American, it already turns to a collective memory rather than an individual memory, at least, Chinatown could not work for everybody. ... LAG
“LAG” IS AN ABSTRACT IT WILL BE MORE INTERESTING IF WE TAKE LAG TIME AND SPACE AS A MENTAL THING RATHER THAN PHYSICAL THING. I BELIEVE THAT WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF URBAN FABRIC, MORE AND MORE PEOPLE NEED “SECOND HOME” WHICH CAN BE DEFINED AS LAG TIME / SPACE. THE INTENTION IN THIS PROJECT IS TO CREATE “LAG”PHYSICALLY BUT ERASE “LAG”MENTALLY. TIME AND SPACE IS VERY HARD TO DEFINE BECAUSE
WORD AND NOTION COULD BE VARIOUS IN DIFFERENT CASES.

WHAT IS A LIVING TAPESTRY? MILL WOODS PARK IS A DESTINATION PARK WITHIN THE LARGER SURROUNDING AREA THAT TIES TOGETHER THE DIFFERENT COMMUNITY GROUPS THROUGH RECREATION. IT WEAVES TOGETHER THE MULTICULTURAL FABRIC AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COMMUNITY INTO A LAYERED IMAGE. THE PARK REACTS OVER TIME AS THE COMMUNITY EVOLVES AND CHANGES DUE TO INFLUX AND EGRESS OF HUMAN MOVEMENT. THE IMAGE CREATED BY THIS TAPESTRY IS CONTINUALLY CHANGING, A LIVING REPRESENTATION OF THE COMMUNITY. THE DESIGN OF THE LIVING TAPESTRY SERVES A VARIETY OF FUNCTIONS BY RESPONDING TO THE NEEDS OF THE GREATER COMMUNITY AND TO THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF MILL WOODS PARK AND ITS USERS INCLUDING MILL WOODS LITTLE LEAGUE, MILL WOODS SOCCER ASSOCIATION AND THE GRIZZLIES FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION. IT ACTS AS A SHOWCASE FOR BOTH MILL WOODS COMMUNITY AND THE CITY OF EDMONTON WITH ITS COMMUNITY FRIENDLY STRUCTURE THAT ALLOWS FOR FLEXIBILITY WITHIN THE SPACES. THE DESIGN ACHIEVES A HIGH STANDARD FOR DAY LIGHTING AND NATURAL VENTILATION AND WILL MEET THE MINIMUM LEED SILVER RATING. THE PLAN ALLOWS FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO HOST A VARIETY OF EVENTS FROM SMALL INTIMATE MEETINGS TO LARGE COMMUNITY GATHERINGS AND MAJOR EVENTS. THE DESIGN HAS BEEN CONSIDERED AS ONE FORM, BUT HAS THE ABILITY TO BE PHASED INTO THE CITY FUNDED COMPONENT INCLUDING A MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM, STAFF OFFICES AND PUBLIC WASHROOMS AND THE USER FUNDED SECONDARY SPACES. THESE INCLUDE A CHANGE ROOMS, A FIRST AID STATION, A MEETING ROOM, STORAGE ROOMS, CONCESSION, AND ADDITIONAL OFFICES.
BUILDING SECTION
METHODOLOGY BY EXAMINING THE MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE PARK, AND UNDERSTANDING THE FIVE ELEMENTS THAT ARE THE MATERIALS THAT CREATE THE SPACE, THE LIVING TAPESTRY PAVILION WORKS AS A PARK WITHIN A PARK. THE FIVE ELEMENTS ARE WOVEN TOGETHER IN A MICROCOSM TO CREATE A CULTURAL LANDMARK THAT BLURS THE BOUNDARIES FOR THE COMMUNITY. THE LAND IS TRANSFORMED INTO A NODE. THE PATH ALLOWS FOR MOVEMENT THAT CAN BE CONSIDERED RANDOM / DIRECTION / CHOICE / CULTURAL LANDMARK. LAND, NODES, SCREENS AND WATER WORK TOGETHER TO BUILD A PATH THAT ITSELF COULD BE CONSIDERED A NODE. THE PAVILION ACTS AS A PLAYGROUND EVERY SURFACE CAN BE EXPERIENCED BY THE USERS.SIMILAR TO THE PARK, EVERY USER WILL SEE AND DRAW ON EACH COMPONENT IN A DIFFERENT MANNER. SOME WILL BE INCLINED TO PLAY ON EVERY SURFACE, OTHERS TO MEDIATE AND RELAX WHILE TAKING IN THE VIEWS. THE USERS WILL ACTIVATE THE PAVILION SURFACES TO CREATE AN EVER-CHANGING IMAGE. THE TAPESTRY’S IMAGE IS FORMED BY THE MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE, THEIR RANDOMNESS AND THE SUBTLE EXPRESSIONS THAT THEY CREATE. THE PAVILION FORM BLURS THE UNDERSTANDING OF FORM AS THE ARCHITECTURE TAKES ON THE ROLE OF LANDSCAPE AND THERE IS NO BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE TWO. WALLS BECOME ROOF, ROOF BECOMES WALLS. THE BLURRING OF TRADITIONAL BUILDING ELEMENTS IS EXPRESSED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AS THE FORM GIVES OPPORTUNITIES FOR A WALL TO BECOME A TOBOGGANING HILL, A ROOF TO BE A SUMMER AMPHITHEATRE. THE TAPESTRY RESPONDS TO THE CULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF THE MILL WOODS COMMUNITY.THE BUILDING ALSO BLURS THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, WHEN THE DOORS ARE OPENED AT SUMMER, COMMON SPACE AND OUTDOOR DECK WILL BE JOINED AS ONE BIG SPACE FOR PEOPLE GATHERING OR LARGE CULTURAL EVENT CELEBRATION. THE TREES IN COMMON SPACE WHICH RUN THROUGH THE ROOF ALSO MAKE INSIDE OUT. ON SITE TREES WOULD ENCOURAGE TO BE DONATED BY MILL WOODS COMMUNITY MEMBERS, ONE TREE PER YEAR. AS A RESULT, THE NUMBER OF TREES WILL REFLECT THE HISTORY OF THE PAVILION AND PHASING DEVELOPMENT WILL REDUCE THE INITIAL LANDSCAPE COST.

WIND TURBINES
THE LARGE OPEN SPACE IN THIS REMOTE SITE PROVIDES GREAT OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE USE OF WIND TURBINES. EIGHT WIND TURBINES ARE INCORPORATED INTO MAIN SUPPORTING STRUCTURE AND THEY HELP TO REINFORCE THE EFFORT TOWARD GREEN BUILDING DESIGN.
GREEN ROOF
REDUCED COOLING COSTS BY KEEPING THE HEAT OFF THE BUILDING AND INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF INSULATION. IMPROVED LONGEVITY FOR THE ROOF BY MINIMIZING WIDE TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS AND EXPOSURE TO THE ELEMENTS
DAY-LIGHTING
DAY-LIGHTING IS USED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN. THE GATHERING PLACE IS ENCLOSED WITH GLASS WALLS.
WOOD STRUCTURE
WOOD STRUCTURE IS FROM RENEWABLE RESOURCES AND CAN BE FABRICATED LOCALLY.
SOLAR POLYCARBONATE ROOF
THIS ROOF SYSTEM COMES WITH INTEGRAL SOLAR FILM INSERTS WHICH PREVENTS 80% OF THE SOLAR HEAT, 80% OF THE SUN GLARE, AND 99% OF THE HARMFUL ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION FROM ENTERING THE PLACE. WITH ITS SEMITRANSPARENCY, THE SOLAR POLYCARBONATE ROOF ALSO INTRODUCES ADDITIONAL DAY-LIGHT PENETRATIONS AND CREATES INTERESTING SHADOWS FOR THE INTERIOR SPACE.
THE PROPOSED EXPERIMENTAL BOYS AND GIRLS’ GATHERING PLACE INCLUDES 2 SPLITED GATHERING SPACES WHICH ARE EQUIPPED WITH MOVABLE WALLS AND HENCE PROVIDES FLEXIBLE SPACE ARRANGEMENTS FOR DIFFERENT GROUP OPPORTUNITIES. THROUGH CAREFUL DESIGN ANALYSIS AND MATERIAL SELECTION, THIS GATHERING PLACE IS DESIGNED TO APPLY SUSTAINABLE PRINCIPALS AND MINIMIZE ENERGY CONSUMPTIONS AT A LOW COST PREMIUM. BY DOING THIS, IT REINFORCES THE B&G CLUB’S MISSION OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND PROVIDES THE BOYS AND GIRLS ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES.
IN THE CONTEXT OF THE TRIENNALE, ALIEN SPACES/STRANGE SPACES SHIFTS THE FOCUS FROM THE CELEBRATION OF PRODUCTION TO THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF OBSERVATION. ONCE DOMINANT AS TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS, THE PERCEPTION OF URBAN RIVERS HAS CHANGED FROM INDUSTRIAL NEGLECT TO AN INDICATOR OF ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY. THE VIDEO PORTRAITS OF THE RIVERS OF FIVE CANADIAN CITIES REVEAL--USING SUBTLE DETAIL, COLOUR, AND RHYTHM--HOW THIS LANDSCAPE, OFTEN UBIQUITOUS AND INVISIBLE, THREADS THE CITY WITH A PRIMAL STRUCTURE THAT MAINTAINS A REFUGE FOR BEAUTY AND LIFE.
THE EXHIBITION, ENTITLED ALIEN SPACES/STRANGE SPACES: CANADA’S URBAN RIVERS, FEATURED A VIDEO SEQUENCE OF FIVE TIGHTLY FRAMED RIVER STUDIES ALIGNED TO FILL ONE WALL OF THE EXHIBITION SPACE. A SECOND WALL WAS COVERED WITH FIVE HUGE AERIAL PHOTOS, WHERE THE LOCATION OF EACH VIDEO WAS INDICATED WITHIN THE COMPLEX TEXTURE OF THE CITY. BETWEEN THESE LARGE-FORMAT PRESENTATIONS OF THE MICRO- AND MACRO-SCALE OF THE RIVERS, THE SPACE IN THE PAVILION RESONATED WITH AN AMBIENT SOUNDSCAPE CREATED WITH RECORDINGS FROM EVERYDAY CITY LIFE THAT EXTENDED THE SENSORY EXPERIENCE. THE INSTALLATION ALLOWED VISITORS MULTIPLE SENSATIONS OF THE RIVER LANDSCAPE, REVEALING A VISCERAL EMPTINESS EXISTING AMIDST URBAN LIFE.

ARCHITECTURAL SKIN IS A MEDIA, WHICH CONVEYS INFORMATION BETWEEN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, INSTITUTION AND URBAN. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BUILDING SKIN WHICH TAKES ADVANTAGE OF EXISTING LANDSCAPE WILL ELABORATES THESE TRANSITIONS. WINNIPEG HAS A VERY LONG WINTER SEASON WHICH INFLUENCES MOST OF THE BUILDING TYPE SELECTION.
SUMMER TYPOLOGY
WINTER TYPOLOGY
SKIN STUDY HAS SIGNIFICATIVE MEANING IN THIS COMPLEX.RETHINKING THE SITE AS A CULTURAL MOTHERLAND RATHER THAN A DYNAMIC INDUSTRIAL LEFTOVER, VARIOUS PLANTING AND GARDENING IS A BEST EXAMPLE TOINDICATE THE CULTURAL ORIGIN OF LAND USER. ALTHOUGH SITE IS LIMITED ,CULTURAL BARRIER WOULD BE HAPPENED WITHIN 5 SQUARE FEET OF THE LAND. FURTHERMORE, BUILDING BECOMES A LUBRICATOR TOBRIDGE AND ERASE THOSE CONTRADICTION FROM SOCIAL PERSPECTIVE AND ALSO HELP US ESCAPE FROM URBAN CHAOS.
GATHERING SPACE “GAMES HAVE AN INHERENT SPATIAL LOGIC OF MOVEMENT WHICH ONE MIGHT SUGGEST IS ANALOGOUS A WAY OF SEEING THE WORLD. THE ORIGINS OF SUCH CLOCKWORK AND GEOMETRIC PRECISION AND DEFINITION MAY HAVE A COROLLARY IN 1.) OUR INNATE PERCEPTUAL ABILITIES AND CAPACITIES, AND 2.) OUR SOCIAL STRUCTURE RELATED TO PERSONAL SPACE, HIERARCHY AND SOCIAL STRATA.”
THE SHIFT BETWEEN ‘SUN” AND “MOON” IMPLIES A LOGIC OF METABOLISM, WHICH ALSO BEHAVES A GENERAL RULE IN GAME. USING A GEOMETRIC SIMPLICITY WHICH REVEALS A SUBTLETY AND RICHNESS IN SPATIAL ARTICULATION, DESIGN HAS BEEN GENERATED AN ARCHITECTURE THAT SHARES THE SERENITY AND CLARITY WHICH CHARACTERIZE THE TRADITIONAL EAST ARCHITECTURE.

SITE PLAN / MAIN FLOOR PLAN
THE PROJECT WAS CUT DOWN INTO A SIMPLE RECTANGLE GEOMETRY. TWO ENTRANCES ARE LOCATED ON EACH SIDE AND LEAD THE MUSEUM VISITORS TO A TREMENDOUS VOID UNDERGROUND SPACE. FROM GROUND LEVEL, BUILDING BECOMES INVISIBLE. LINK THE LANDSCAPE WITH ABSTRACT FABRIC THREAD, THE EXISTING PARK IS NOT A SEGMENT ANY MORE, SPACES ARE CONNECTED WITH MULTI-LAYER COMPONENTS, FOR INSTANCE, TREES, WALKING TRAILS, GRASS, RIVER, BUILDING AND VISITORS, ETC.
ROTATION OF RIBBON PROVIDES A SENSE OF MOVEMENT AND RHYTHM IN ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS AND AN EMPHASIS ON THE CENTRAL POINT OF THE ARCHITECTURAL SPACE. FOR THE REASON THAT MARTIAL ART INCLUDES THE ELEMENTS OF RELIGION AND DIVINITY, THE PROPOSED SITE COULD BE UNDERSTOOD AS A REDEVELOPMENT OF THE SACRISTY OF THE BASILICA IN FLORENCE, ITALY. THE VOID SPACE WHICH IS DIVIDED BY RIBBONS IS FLEXIBLE IN USE, VARIOUS PAVINGS INDICATE THE FUNCTION OF THE SITE USING.
COMMUNITY
NATION - CHINA
CITY WITH WATER
NODE / LANDSCAPE
IN RESPONSE TO THE FAST GROWING OF POPULATION AND SOCIAL STRUCTURE, CHINA EXPERIENCES THE TRANSFORMATION FROM TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY TO INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY. IT IS FACING THE CHALLENGE TO DEVELOP THE NEW COMMUNITY COMPLEX UNDER AN INTACT FORMER AGRICULTURAL LAND. QING DAO GOVERNMENT ENGAGED WOTON INTERNATIONAL TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL FOR THEIR 12 ACRES SUBURBAN DEVELOPMENT, AS PART OF TEAM, MY RESPONSIBILITY IS TO HELP THEM TO DESIGN TWO CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS WHICH WILL BE DEFINED AS” FRONT DOOR “ OF THE NEW COMMUNITY: COMMUNITY CULTURAL CENTRE AND COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTRE. THE DESIGN CONCEPT SOUGHT TO MAKE SITE TO A CULTURAL CARRIER BASED ON RESPECT FOR ITS HISTORY AND TRADITIONS, PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE, AS WELL AS ITS SENSITIVITY AS IT’S ORIGINAL LAND USE. TWO BUILDING ENCLOSED A WATER FEATURE ELEMENT WITH AN ENTRY BRIDGE UPON IT. WATER SYSTEM GOES AROUND BUILDING AND CELEBRATES THE CONNECTION BETWEEN INSIDE AND OUTSIDE.
PATH / EDGE
THE SPORTS HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM IS ORIENTED SUCH THAT ITS MAIN CIRCULATION SPINE AND ENTRANCES ESTABLISH A DIRECT VISUAL AND PHYSICAL CONNECTION TO THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS AND APPROACHES. ARRIVING AT THIS NEW FACILITY THAT IS IN ESSENCE A CELEBRATION OF CANADIAN SPORT, AND ENTERING THROUGH THE SOARING GLASS AND STEEL MAIN ENTRANCE WILL ALLOW ALL CANADIANS TO EXPERIENCE THEIR OWN ASCENSION INTO SPORTS HISTORY. IN CONTRAST TO THE COMPLEX ASSEMBLAGE OF INTERIOR SPACES, THE BUILDING EXTERIOR WAS ENVISIONED AS A SIMPLE BOX-LIKE CONTAINER THAT HINTS AT THE EXCITING EXPERIENCE WITHIN. STUDIES OF HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ADJACENCIES RESULTED IN A PROPOSAL TO LOCATE THE LARGER PUBLIC ORIENTED PROGRAM SPACES INCLUDING THE EXHIBIT HALL ON ONE LEVEL, AND BACK-OF-HOUSE REQUIREMENTS ON ANOTHER, WITHIN THE ALLOWABLE SITE BOUNDARY.

THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WING EXPANSION AT MOUNT ROYAL COLLEGE IS LOCATED IN THE B WING OF THE MAIN BUILDING. THE EXISTING FACILITY OFFERS LABS SPACE FOR STUDIES IN BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY. OFFICES AND RESEARCH SPACES FOR CORRESPONDING STAFF, AS WELL AS CLASSROOMS, SUPPORT THESE PROGRAMS.
THE DESIGN APPROACH TO THE EXPANSION IS TO MAKE A CLEAR BREAK FROM THE EXISTING BUILDING TO THE EXPANSION BY THE USE OF A FULLY GLAZED TRANSITIONAL ELEMENT, A THRESHOLD. HOWEVER, DATUM’S AND ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE FROM THE EXISTING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WING CARRY OVER TO THE EXPANSION THROUGH SUBTLE AND INNOVATIVE ARTICULATION OF THE FACADE. THE MATERIAL AND FORM EXPRESSED BOTH OUTSIDE AND INSIDE ARE A DIRECT RESULT OF THE ASSOCIATED PROGRAM WITHIN THE ENCLOSURE. THUS THE BUILDING CAN BE READ FROM THE OUTSIDE AS WELL AS INSIDE; THE FORM IS A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF THEIR FUNCTION.
A CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT MASTER PLAN WAS UNDERTAKEN DURING THE SPRING AND SUMMER OF 2008 TO GUIDE FUTURE GROWTH PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT DECISIONS. THE PLAN LOOKED AT THE NEED FOR GROWTH IN SEVERAL KEY ACADEMIC AREAS WITH THE CURRENT AND PROJECTED INCREASE IN STUDENT POPULATION – A NEW LIBRARY, HEALTH & WELLNESS AND TRADES & TECHNOLOGY. THE AREA SHOWN IN THE MASTER PLAN IS LOCATED TO THE EAST OF THE EXISTING ICONIC CARDINAL BUILDING AND ITS SUBSEQUENT EXPANSION BY FIELD & FIELD & FIELD. TO THE NORTH THE LAND IS BOUNDED BY THE REGIONAL PATHWAY ALONG BEAR CREEK RESERVOIR. TO THE EAST OF THE PROPOSED BUILDINGS IS SPACE ALLOCATED BY THE MASTER PLAN FOR FUTURE ACADEMIC AND STUDENT RESIDENTIAL GROWTH AS WELL AS EXISTING STUDENT RESIDENCES. THE LAND IS BOUNDED BY THE EXISTING ELECTRICAL TRADES BUILDING TO THE SOUTH. THE DESIGN APPROACH TO THE PROJECT WAS TO DEVELOP A UNIFIED ACADEMIC COMPLEX THAT RESPONDED TO THE CONTEXTUAL MAKE-UP OF THE AREA, YET RESPONDED TO SEVERAL KEY ITEMS OUTLINED IN THE MASTER PLAN.
LOCATED IN A NATURAL SETTING, BOYS & GIRLS CAMP ADVENTURE SHELTER IS A SUSTAINABLE WOOD SHELTER THAT PROVIDES A GATHERING AND AMPHITHEATRE SPACE FOR CAMPERS. THE BUILDING RESPONDS TO ITS NATURAL SETTING THROUGH THE USE OF WOOD. IT IS LOCATED ON A NATURAL SLOPE WHICH ALLOWS FOR AN AMPHITHEATRE SETTING UNDER THE SHELTER. THE USE OF WOOD FOR BOTH STRUCTURAL AND CLADDING ELEMENTS RESPECT THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT AND SHOWCASE THE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN.
COMPARED WITH CONCRETE AND STEEL, WOOD COULD BE FIT INTO THE SITE WHICH IS IN REMOTE AREA VERY WELL, IT WAS BLEND WITH UNTOUCHED NATURAL ENVIRONMENT DIRECTLY AND YOU EVEN CAN TOUCH, SMELL THE BUILDING. POUND FOR POUND, WOOD IS STRONGER THAN STEEL. UNLIKE STEEL, IT IS ALSO RESILIENT. THIS COMBINATION OF STRENGTH AND RESILIENCY GIVES WOOD THE ABILITY TO ABSORB THE SHOCK OF HEAVY LOADS PROVIDING A GREATER MARGIN OF SAFETY THAN MANY OTHER MATERIALS. THE CONVERSION COST OF WOOD--THE COST OF MANUFACTURING PRODUCTS FROM THE RAW MATERIAL--IS MUCH LESS THAN FOR ANY OTHER MATERIAL. THE EXPENDITURE OF ENERGY FOR CONVERSION IS ALSO LESS WHEN CONVERTING WOOD.
Driven from flower section study , Green House on Roosevelt Island is aim to build the subtle and ambiguous relationship between architecture, technology ,culture and nature. Flower blooming follows nature order which could be understood as a sustainable process: from a single seed, it transforms into stamen; anther; ovary; pistil; stigma; petal and filament. All components work together to form a perfect mechanism. Meanwhile, flower is the creature fully exposed it’s function with its atheistic . Green House blends with landscape and micic the natural environment of plants and flowers by different zones as Amazon, Tropical, Desert, Temperate, etc. Curvaceous structure is to form a shelter , but not completely covered by glass dorms. The overall concept is to blur the boundary between outside and inside, urban and mirco-environment.
The process was broken up into two equal parts (1) Research and (2) Design. During both parts, we worked in small groups to investigate specific research topics and develop architectural building projects. Roosevelt Island has a long and colorful history from its beginnings as the Canarsie Indian island “Minnahannock” (loosely translated to: “It’s Nice to be on the Islands”), as the home for the mentally ill and petty violators as Welfare Island, to the “Island Nobody Knows” to its most recent reincarnation as the home of the Cornell Technion campus. We worked with OMA new york office to look at how Roosevelt Island connects to the larger New York metropolitan area in regards to program, infrastructure, and circulation to propose a new model of connectivity.
Pavilion takes the site as a whole by considering Statue of George Washtington as the center of circumference. The curve structure allows visitors to walk underneath to access to subway, while it’s special characters catch new glimpses of daily public transit users. The project offers an opportunity to examine the new building form and technologies to be implemented as a pavilion enclosure from an abstract element. Double skins, which are composed by blush aluminum and red acrylic panels, playing with the curvature, evolve from vagarious tactic to increasingly accepted subway pavilion strategies.
Simple transformal concept; Not only about chairs, but offer architecture & urban context; Easy to be manufactured; Easy to count and store (missing & types); Game to play; Hybird the puzzles to meet different functions and activities; Various heights are suitable to various age groups; Stimulate the meaning of “battery park by utilizing batteries
The most important elements in my project are floating cross and the fire,(besides the architecture). Both will bring the faith and spirit to the site, chapel is static, holy and peaceful, however, cross and fire are alive. Buildings kiss the site very gently, chop the existing trees only when needed. It is a long journey by passing parking, fellowship hall and study/sleep quarters to reach the chapel. It seems chapel will be an ending point but experience extended by viewing the cross and fire in the axis.

Urban rivers experience an important role in shaping most Canadian city contexts, coastlines, and people’s behaviors. The transformation, between summer and winter, when river was frozen, also create the cultural and social threshold in urbanism and landscape. “Montreal Winter urbanism” is research based project to test the wintry weather’s morphology in both buildings and landscape which envelop us. The project’s research includes the typical coastline conditions and skating rink & arenas in Montreal. The site contexts (social, historical, and cultural) are to form the site selections and building programs.
