yndsay Levington is someone you want to know. She is the perfect picture of resilience, determination, and what it means to pay it forward by helping pull others through what she herself has been through.

The television news anchor, reporter, host, and sought-after speaker is also the Founder of SurviveHER, a thriving non-profit organization whose mission is to inform, inspire, and empower a community of breast cancer ‘surviveHERs’ and women. SurviveHER offers direct support to uninsured and underserved women as well as support to their families and caregivers.

As a survivor of Stage 2B triple-negative breast cancer herself, Lyndsay knows what it is to need a helping hand and an encouraging word to navigate a challenging time in life. Lyndsay turned what could have been a moment of defeat and isolation into her purpose by walking by faith and adhering to the call of starting the non-profit organization. SurviveHER’s first event, Spin for HER, was a spin class benefit ride held in 2021. It was a ticketed event holding real-time giveaways with Lyndsay’s goal to put the proceeds collected into the hands of those who were in need. The success of the benefit ride fueled and inspired her to continue to build and reach more women who are in need.

SurviveHER is making a difference in the lives of so many women during a time when it matters most. This organization is working hard to focus on multiple areas which include supporting the family members and caregivers of those who are going through a breast cancer diagnosis. Lyndsay would like to encourage women who are currently going through breast cancer to believe that they are healed, a thriver, and an overcomer – to see themselves on the other side by staying positive. And for women who are blessed to have survived breast cancer, she would like to encourage you to give back by volunteering and taking the time to sit with a woman in need. Assist with pulling them through. Although Lyndsay is a survivor of breast cancer, her journey of healing is ongoing. SurviveHER has been her form of therapy and has assisted in her healing and recovery. We salute you Lyndsay and the magnificent work you and SurviveHER are doing for other women. You live up to your middle name, JOY!

Shondria Seaton is an IT leader and advocate. She is passionate about minimizing the digital divide in underrepresented communities. She serves on the Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) Indianapolis Advisory Board and is a past president of the Indianapolis Chapter and a past National BDPA Officer. In these roles, she has advocated for diversity and inclusion for students and adults in Tech. Shondria is also an Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF) Emerge Academy graduate. BDPA and ITSMF are two influential organizations focused on increasing Black representation in tech leadership. Through these organizations and others, as well as Shondria’s leadership, she has built a network of professionals advancing their careers while reaching back to uplift others. Shondria has dedicated her career to providing mentorship and creating opportunities for black professionals and students in the tech industry. Born and raised in East Chicago, Indiana, Tammi grew up surrounded by multicultural and minorityowned businesses. Her grandparents owned a popular shop, Robinson’s Delicatessen, on a street filled with Black-owned grocery stores, bars, funeral homes, and restaurants. This vibrant entrepreneurial community gave Tammi a firsthand understanding of the power of economic independence and community-driven business.

WHO IS TAMMI DAVIS?

More than a diversity advocate, Tammi is a thirdgeneration legacy of the civil rights movement, a woman with deep African roots, and a passionate leader for social justice and equity. With ancestry tracing back

to the Bubi people of Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, and the Fulani, Hausa, and Tikar people of Cameroon, Tammi embraces her heritage and purpose as her driving force. “I am a creation in God’s image born with a purpose,” Tammi shares, “which I believe is to do my part to advance God’s Kingdom and to fight for social justice and equity.” Her commitment to diversity and inclusion is not just her vocation – it’s her ministry, a calling inherited from her family’s long history of advocacy.

“The businesses in my community were familyowned, and the dollars recirculated within our neighborhood,” Tammi recalls. “It was a powerful thing to see economic independence and social interactions across different cultures, races, and nationalities.”

THE CIVIL RIGHTS LEGACY IN HER FAMILY

Tammi’s family didn’t just build businesses – they built movements. Her grandfather, the late Rev. K.T. Robinson, helped organize the Fair Share Organization in the 1950s, advocating for Black employment in companies that refused to hire African Americans. Her mother, Barbara Holder, has over 50 years of experience in developing business and workforce diversity programs. “I honestly don’t believe I had a choice in my career path,” Tammi says with a smile. “I come from a long line of advocates, entrepreneurs, and innovators. My career is a continuation of my family’s legacy in social justice.”

THE POWER OF PUBLIC SPEAKING AND INSPIRATION

Church in East Chicago. From giving Easter speeches to eventually serving as Mistress of Ceremony for church events, Tammi honed her skills in front of audiences from a young age. What fulfills her most about public speaking is the opportunity to deliver a message that can inspire others to take action. Whether she’s speaking on diversity, women’s empowerment, or her faith, Tammi’s goal is always to ignite change in her audience. “I enjoy sharing information that inspires others to broaden their perspective or learn something new. It feels like I’m fulfilling my mission in life,” she reflects.

HER CAREER JOURNEY TO THE OBAMA FOUNDATION

Tammi’s career is a blend of experiences in public service, diversity, and workforce development. She began as the Compliance Manager for Powers and Sons Construction, overseeing compliance on construction projects in Gary, Indiana. Her expertise grew as she managed diversity initiatives for the city’s mayors and worked with major corporations. But in 2021, an opportunity at the Obama Foundation called. Today, Tammi serves as the Director of Business Diversity and Workforce Development for the Obama Presidential Center, leading efforts to ensure that diverse businesses and workers have a significant presence in the construction of the 19.3-acre campus in Chicago.

PROMOTING SUPPLIER AND WORKFORCE DIVERSITY

Tammi’s work at the Obama Foundation has already seen tremendous results. Over 53% of the construction contracts for the Obama Presidential Center have been awarded to diverse businesses, exceeding the Foundation’s initial goal of 50%. The project is breaking barriers in workforce diversity, particularly in Chicago’s construction sector, where African Americans and women are traditionally underrepresented. Tammi initiated several transformative actions, including a diverse food truck initiative where women, minority, and veteranowned food trucks serve the construction workers. These efforts have created community engagement and built stronger relationships between the project and the local residents. “When a construction worker tells me he brings his son by the project to show him what he’s helping to build, it recharges my energy,” Tammi shares. “It’s a reminder that we are not just building a center; we are building within a community.”

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES IN DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

In an ever-evolving landscape, promoting diversity can often be met with resistance. Tammi stays focused on the mission.

“Coming into this role, I fully adopted the Foundation’s mission to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world,” Tammi says.

“All the chatter and banter are just distractions,” she explains. “Our businesses and communities deserve consistent advocacy, not reactionary support when it’s convenient.”

Her role allows her to leverage her entire career experience to support construction workforce diversity goals.

Tammi keeps herself grounded by maintaining strong networks, staying informed about industry

Tammi’s Advice for Women to Live Their Best Lives Given the opportunity to address a group of women, Tammi would share three core lessons:

1 The road to success is an obstacle course: You need to put in the work, train for it, and push beyond limitations – both perceived and real.

s the holiday season approaches, the rush to buy gifts will soon begin. There will be church events, office Secret Santa exchanges, and of course, our own family traditions. The pressure to open up our wallets can become overwhelming, especially if you’re trying to be mindful of your spending. So, how do we show our loved ones we care without ending up with holiday debt and buyer’s remorse?

In this article, I’ll share nine practical tips to help you celebrate the holidays without straining your finances.

The key to staying within a budget? Having a budget in the first place. Without a specific figure in mind, it’s all too easy to get swept up in the holiday spirit and spend money you really don’t have. You need a clear number that you won’t exceed. This number should be based on what you can afford after your monthly bills are paid and basic needs met. If you’re unsure of what that number is, it’s time to do a little napkin math. Start by writing down your monthly income, then deduct your living expenses (like rent or mortgage, utilities, internet, cell phone, auto insurance). Don’t forget to include costs that don’t come in a formal bill, such as groceries or gas for your car. The amount left after these deductions is what you can spend on gifts. This is your shopping budget.

PRO TIP: Set aside 10-15% of that remaining amount and add it to your savings account. This way, you won’t be spending your entire paycheck.

TIP #2: PAY WITH CASH

These days the convenience of debit cards, credit cards, and payment apps makes it all too easy to overspend. Just insert, swipe, or tap and swish – your money is gone. But with cash, it’s a different story. There’s something psychological about watching that thick roll of green bills gradually get thinner with every purchase. Suddenly, you find yourself asking, “Do I really want to buy this, or should I choose something less expensive?” This practice can effectively help you stay within your budget. If you’re not a fan of carrying cash, consider using a prepaid gift card for your holiday shopping. You’ll enjoy the convenience of a debit or credit card, but with the limits of cash. Once the money is gone, you won’t be able to spend any more.

TIP #3: MAKE A LIST

A list gives you a plan – a strategy for your holiday shopping. It gives you a clear visual of how many people you need to buy for. Plus, when you compare it to your budget, you may find you need to pare the list down, or get creative with your purchases to avoid overspending. Take your list a step further by adding a spending limit next to each person’s name. This ensures you stay within your budget and can truly afford to buy something for everyone on your list. It might feel a bit tedious at first, but it will give you the sales resistance you need when those hard-to-resist sales from your favorite store inevitably land in your inbox.

TIP #4: SAVE WITH COUPON WEBSITES

There’s no shortage of websites offering coupons, cashback, and daily deals to help you save on purchases.

Popular sites like Groupon, RetailMeNot, and Rakuten can be great resources for finding deals during your holiday shopping. Many of these sites offer a browser extension that finds and automatically applies promo codes to your shopping carts. Try adding one to your browser so you never miss out on a deal. TIP #5: USE CASHBACK CREDIT CARDS Many credit cards offer cashback for purchases, making them a great way to earn a portion of your money back. After all, you don’t want to still be paying off this year’s gifts next summer, do you?

Discipline is crucial here. If that’s not your strong suit or you already have quite a bit of debt, it’s best to skip this tip and proceed to our next tip.

TIP #7: MAKE A TASTY TREAT

Some of my favorite gifts have been the baked goods people have given me. I was introduced to flavors I probably never would have tried but for their baked goods. Much like the previous tip, an edible gift allows you to buy in bulk and make multiple gifts for less. You can bake a family recipe passed down through the generations, for instance, allowing you to share a piece of your family history. You can use special molds for cakes, breads, and cookies to give them a unique design. Homemade candies, fudges, trail mixes, caramel sauces, or coated popcorn also make great gifts. And don’t forget to package your tasty creations in festive containers or wrapping to make them truly stand out.

Look for gently used items or things you can repurpose. For instance, you can turn dinner saucers into plant saucers for the plant lover in your life. With a little creativity, you can turn something old into something memorable your loved ones will cherish for years to come. Plus, it’s a practical way to reduce waste, support the planet, and live sustainably.

TIP #9: THINK LONG TERM

Go beyond immediate gratification and give the gift of a financial head start. Think about the child, college student, or young professional in your life. Through low-risk vehicles like savings bonds, you can invest in their future. You also have the option to determine how much you invest, allowing you to stay within your budget.

TIP #8: SHOP AT THRIFT STORES

Think about creating a rainyday fund, an education fund, or savings for a first home. Include a personal note to add a meaningful touch and help them understand the significance of your gift. By thinking long term, you’re giving the gift that keeps on giving well into their future.

Each holiday season, the debate between dressing and stuffing arises. To clarify: stuffing is baked inside the turkey or other meats, while dressing is baked as a separate side dish. Though the ingredients are similar, dressing is a Southern tradition.

THE HOLY TRINITY: THE SECRET TO SOUTHERN FLAVOR

The backbone of Southern cooking is the Holy Trinity (onions, bell peppers, and celery). This trio, sautéed together, forms the flavor base for iconic dishes like gumbo, jambalaya, and cornbread dressing. And while working on other projects with heavy topics, “Luther was my antidote of joy,” Dawn explains. She got to lean further into her artistic side, imagining people singing, dancing, and laughing together while watching this documentary.

DAWN’S TAKEAWAYS: I loved seeing how funny and silly he was, and seeing him relaxed – also, his work ethic. Seeing how much work he put into his music, career, and stage performances.

It was interesting to learn that a documentary had not yet been done, considering Luther’s mega-stardom and the extensive materials Sony had about him. Now is the time for Luther’s star to shine brighter.

This is a great way to describe art because, most times, we experience it through sensory experience. Even if you can not touch it with your fingers, you can feel it with your heart. Luther’s voice was smooth and all-encompassing. He constructed emotional climatic love stories with his music, with his signature instrumental intros and arrangements of covers like The Carpenters’ “Superstar,” which was not only a huge hit, but became a classic in its own right, and the deeply loved cover of “A House is Not a Home” by Dionne Warwick. It is known that Luther was notoriously private about his personal life, and Dawn states she and her team watched many hours of interviews where Luther stated his personal life is, “None of your business.” He further explained that he owed his fans his talent, best effort, and work, but that was it. Dawn states this was the part of the film where she was “most aware they had to get

hen you think about “fastpaced” and “emotional”, these characteristics are not usually paired with each other. However, in her sequel, Heist Royale, Kayvion Lewis constructs a storyline packed with high-octane energy and the emotionality that ebbs and flows in relationships. Rosalyn “Ros” Quest is still performing heists, but now she’s not trying to win the competition for prize money – she is working for the Organization, which evolves into a situation that leaves Ros fighting for her life. While this may be a YA (young adult) book, Kayvion has written another novel layered with characters experiencing real emotions and making tough relationship decisions. Talking with Kayvion about The Gambit (prelude) and Heist Royale (sequel), it is clear she thoroughly enjoys writing (and reading) a story that includes characteristics

like representation, strong female lead, diversity, and relationship components of love and trust – these are important to her and her audience. As a little girl, Kayvion, a native Louisianian, loved being in a library and reading; growing up she even worked in a library as well. She talks about her love and curiosity of traveling and the part it plays in her life. When asked how she came up with the plot of this two-part series, she explains it came to her in a dream and that she looked up whether or not this story existed when she awakened from the dream, and to her surprise, it had not. So she did what Toni Morrison instructs writers to do: write the book you want to read. Kayvion does precisely that with these books and writes an enveloping story – a cinematic rollercoaster ride that turns you every way but loose! Heist Royale is a good time and is a fun buddy read with your family or a book club.
