? IS THISNormal Q&A WITH

DR. JOLENE BRIGHTEN BY BRITTANY K. HUNT

D

r. Brighten, as an expert in the field, has taken on the challenge of destigmatizing questions about the female body with her book, Is This Normal? Her straightforward approach is both refreshing and reassuring.

Q&A Q. Dr. Brighten, what led you to pursue a career in naturopathic medicine, a field where your expertise shines? I was studying for my Masters’ in nutrition when I came across naturopathic medicine. I was considering going the conventional medicine route, but in my own personal experience, I felt it lacked a respect for nutrition, lifestyle, and many of the pieces that truly prevent chronic disease. I also experienced my share of gaslighting, being offered little beyond a prescription, and felt frustrated as a patient in that system. I wanted a more integrative background, which is why I chose to

pursue naturopathic medicine. This has given me a unique ability to counsel patients on many treatment options, prescribe medications when necessary, and help patients come off medications they no longer need.

guided to do so. The book is much larger and more comprehensive than the average health book, so there wasn’t much we had to edit out. When it came to what made the final cut, this is something my editor and I collaborated on.

While pharmaceuticals are a necessary part of treatment in some cases, this training helps me go beyond a prescription alone to understand how my patient may have developed the issues they are experiencing and how we can begin to remove the obstacles in their life that are preventing them from being able to heal.

Q. So many people believe that sex is solely physical. However, sex is interconnected with the mind, body, and emotions. “Sex exists on a spectrum,” p. 10 “One of the goals of this book is to help broaden the discussion on sex so that you discover new ways to embrace and enjoy it that are authentic, pleasurable, and “normal” to you.” Can you talk more about why good sex starts with good communication? In some situations, there is an expectation that you’ll just know what your partner likes and vice versa. It creates an extra layer of anxiety for some people. The best way to ensure both you and your partner are having your pleasure needs met is by talking about what you like. It is also important to have communication surrounding consent so that both partners are comfortable.

Q. How did you decide what to address in the book and what to edit? I often say Is This Normal? was written by the women who trust me in asking their most intimate of questions. Within the book I addressed the most common questions I receive from women and provided an extensive foundation to understanding your body so that you can feel both empowered to create change and

Q. The information you share and explain is beneficial and essential to both genders, particularly women. At what stage of adolescence would you recommend this book as a valuable resource for understanding sexual health? Because the book encompasses everything from periods and hormones to libido and orgasms, it really depends on the individual. You may want to read about the menstrual cycle and how to troubleshoot PMS and acne, as an example, when you first get your period. That may mean you’re 12 or 14 needing access to that information. According to the CDC, the average age to try heterosexual vaginal sex for the first time is 17, so someone may be much older before wanting to access that information.

Health & Wellness

The ideal is that parents read Is This Normal? and they are the ones to teach their children this information. This positions them as the trusted expert in their children’s life and helps create a level of communication that can ultimately result in healthier, happier children. I’ve heard from several dads who have shared with me that they’ve read the book in order to be informed about their daughter’s body and the changes they are going through. One single dad shared with me that Is This Normal? alleviated all the anxiety he was having about how to approach the conversation of periods and sex with his daughter and that he felt better equipped to support her. I think that is an absolutely beautiful thing and I want to help more parents be the resource their children go to first. Q. Where does the judgment or negative attention stem from? Aside from your book and others similar, how can we increase “judgment-free straight talk?” From the moment we’re taught about our bodies, there is this subtle and sometimes overt message that we should feel shame. This is only amplified as we move through puberty and other stages of life. In fact, I don’t think there is any stage of a woman’s life where society doesn’t try to shame us in some way, whether that is “periods are gross” or “you have less value when you enter menopause” – these messages are damaging and they’re absolutely false. I think we need to teach medically accurate health education to everyone in schools in a non-biased way starting early in life. I also think that as parents we have to examine how we talk about and treat our own bodies, knowing our children are always watching our example. But even with the best efforts and education, we are all subjected to marketing that reinforces our insecurities in order to get our buy-in as consumers. Normalizing normal conversations and holding space for people to speak their truth and ask questions about their body is one way we can start to overcome this. Q: Without getting too political, do you want this book to help women navigate their reproductive rights?

I want to empower women with the information they need to advocate for their health care needs, whether that is in their doctor’s office or in the political landscape. Q: Finding a doctor you like can be challenging. It can be a lot like dating, meaning looking for someone with whom you can be in a safe and trusting relationship, and most often, that requires more than one try. What are your suggestions for helping women find the right practitioner to consult with them on their or her body? Ask yourself what the ideal outcome is. If you’re wanting someone to guide you in nutrition and lifestyle interventions, you’re not going to find that with the average gynecologist or primary care provider. If you’re wanting lab testing, imaging, and to get a diagnosis, then those are the things that type of provider can help with. I recommend tracking your data and writing it down. This means making note of your symptoms, how often they happen, how they impact your daily life, and how long you've been experiencing them, as a few examples. Write all your questions before you go into the appointment and take an advocate with you, like a friend, to help you through difficult conversations.

I recommend women think about their mid-thirties through their forties as a training period for menopause. This is the time to make sure you’re addressing your health concerns, establish a strength training and stress reduction routine, improve your nutrient intake, and make sleep a priority. If you’re in menopause, explore if HRT or menopause hormone therapy (MHT) is right for you. In many cases, the benefits outweigh the risks and can be a tool in the prevention of heart disease, cancer, dementia, osteoporosis, sarcopenic obesity, and more. Board Certified Naturopathic Endocrinologist and clinical sexologist Dr. Jolene Brighten is a leader in women's health and hormone balance, best-selling author of Is This Normal?, speaker, and the founder of Rubus Health.

I share steps you can take in the appointment to advocate for better care in Is This Normal? because based on the current research we know that gaslighting and dismissing women’s concerns is far more common than it should be. And honestly, we don’t even need research to tell us that because women have been sharing it for generations. Q: Menopause is becoming a more widely discussed topic. Between hot flashes and irregular periods, what suggestions can you offer to someone navigating this chapter? Ideally, you find a menopause informed provider who is experienced in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) before you arrive at menopause. Unfortunately, these providers can be hard to find. Unlike my medical training, which taught me extensively about menopause management and HRT prescribing, many providers did not get that training. The Menopause Society is one resource I share with people to find a provider.

Welcome Relaxation and Move with the Wind This Summer Embrace the season of renewal and rediscover balance

BY JULIANNA BROWN

8

MYHOPEMAG.COM summer 2024

Health & Wellness

s the seasons shift, so should your outlook on life. As you emerge from the depth of winter and the fragile beginnings of spring, summer provides the perfect opportunity to unwind and have fun. Make this the best summer yet!

A

Life is so much bigger than what you can imagine. Don’t trap yourself in what you think your life is supposed to look like according to society – let loose for once, you are so much more than your achievements and capabilities.

Resetting this summer

When you're feeling overwhelmed while working towards your summer goals, consider techniques such as "naming the emotion" or "creating a pie chart of your life." These are some suggestions discussed in a recent NPR article for coping with high-stress situations. For example, if you don't land your dream job or achieve your desired weight loss, consider visualizing what truly matters in your life by creating a diagram. Label each section with a percentage to illustrate that a single failure does not represent your entire life. This can help you adjust to disappointment more smoothly. If you find yourself grappling with negative emotions due to a heavy workload this summer, try using the "affect labeling" technique. This involves identifying and quantifying your feelings, which has been scientifically shown to rewire the brain's emotional response system, activate the brain's reasoning center, and reduce distress. Remember, don't let setbacks define you this summer!

Finding time for relaxation

Like any woman, you label success as a top priority. Success in your physical health, in your job, or even in your education. But what about the small things in life? What have you already accomplished?

An article published by the Standard shares that stress-relieving measures like meditation, exercise, or relaxed breathing can lessen cortisol levels, lowering stress. With that in mind, this summer plan ahead and factor in the time to participate in relaxing practices like these to lower stress levels and avoid burnout.

Moving with the wind

It can be difficult to recognize how much you've already achieved in life when it seems like there's always something more to strive for. Don't dwell on what you don't have yet – your time will come. In the meantime, release tensions and live in the present. Remember the little things in life. With all the great things you will put out into the world this summer, give yourself time to unwind and relax. Set aside days where you aren’t working away or organizing things you would like to achieve. Spend time with the people you love and make memories that will last forever. Consider all the meaningful aspects of your life that don't stem from work hours. What do you love? What brings you happiness? What do you live for? Like any hardworking woman, you may have several tasks to complete before the season changes. Find fulfillment outside of productivity, and even if you don’t check off all your boxes, know that you had fun trying.

Most importantly, what do you do to unwind? Summer presents a wonderful chance to take on additional responsibilities and set the stage for success in the fall. With that in mind, setting aside time to relax is important. Work is only one aspect of life, don’t get blinded by the satisfaction of achievement.

A SUMMER ENCOUNTER WITH SELF-LOVE YOU ARE WORTH IT BY RITA J. TAYLOR

S

ummer has arrived along with all it brings. A time of rest. A time of relaxation. A time to spend moments with family and friends. A time for trips. It is a time of making memories with the ones you love. However, do you love the person looking back at you when you look in the mirror?

This moment required all of us to adjust schedules, make sacrifices, and pull away from things that would normally pull us away in order to get to a place where we could be refreshed. Pouring into you and the way you care for yourself starts with how well you love YOU.

A summer encounter with self-love is intentionally taking this time to discover the importance of loving yourself. Self-love isn’t selfish, it is needed for you to love those around you properly and effectively. When you love yourself, it shows up in how you not only treat yourself, but how you allow others to treat you. You establish boundaries that are healthy and protective. Loving everything you are is an internal work that manifests externally.

Contrary to popular societal beliefs, self-love isn’t superficial, it’s much deeper. I know from past personal experience that struggling to embrace others' love for you or even believing that others love you is because there is a lack of love for oneself. You are worthy of love!

When there is a lack of self-love you attract things and people that can be detrimental to your mental and emotional health. However, when you do the work to love yourself, it becomes like a repellent that fights off everything that isn’t healthy or would hinder growth. I recently attended a RefreHER Women’s Conference and during this conference, I noticed it was attended by women from various backgrounds, careers, and locations. However, one thing I discovered was all of us were in search of something that would improve or heal areas in our lives that were lacking. Some encountered what self-love looked like for the first time by being in a room of women and hearing testimonies of resilience and discovery, while some others in attendance loved themselves enough to want to improve and be a better woman because of how they see themselves.

10

MYHOPEMAG.COM summer 2024

In conclusion, encounter self-love by being realistic, facing hard truths, and seeking professional counseling if needed. You are at your best when you learn to love yourself and not feel guilty in doing so. You are fearfully and wonderfully made and the person you see in the mirror every day is worthy of loving.

FRAGRANCES TO ELEVATE YOUR SUMMER: MUST HAVE SCENTS FOR THE SEASON Discover the best BY FISILE MABUZA

floral and fruity fragrances

Stepping into summer always feels like stepping into a brand new era. After months of cold and dreary weather, this time of the year means we can finally enjoy the sun and switch our wardrobe up. It also means that it is time to switch our scents up. Winter often calls for warm, woody, and gourmand notes that give a cozy feel, while summer calls for more fun, vibrant notes that are breezy and sweet. The differences in these can be quite stark, so making sure that you have a good rotation of scents for each season is recommended. This year, floral and fruity scents are in! Here are seven fragrances that we recommend you try for the summer.

12

THE SECRET TO

SWEAT-PROOF MAKEUP Keep a flawless look all day with these must-have products BY FISILE MABUZA

Makeup in the summer heat can be challenging, especially if you need it to last for hours. Nothing is worse than spending an hour or so on makeup only for it to melt away because of the heat. The weather may not be within the realm of your control, but there are ways you can ensure your beat is sweat-proof all day long. Here are products we swear by that will make sure your makeup DOES NOT MOVE!

These primers are our favorites:

HIGH-END: ONE/SIZE SECURE THE SWEAT

The Secure the Sweat primer is sweatproof, waterproof, and matte. All you need is a peasized amount for maximum results.

1 PRIMER Making sure that you start with a good base is essential. Primer creates a layer for smooth makeup application while holding it in place and giving your complexion an even tone. Before you apply primer, make sure your moisturizer has fully absorbed. After applying primer, wait until the product has dried completely.

14

MYHOPEMAG.COM summer 2024

DRUGSTORE: E.L.F. MAKEUP POWER GRIP FACE PRIMER

This primer is currently a hot topic, and we completely understand why - it works. Make sure you warm this primer up between your hands before patting it onto your skin.

2 MATTE FOUNDATION

4 SETTING SPRAY

The quality of your foundation can make or break your makeup look. Go for a matte foundation as it is best for those with oily or combination skin. When considering which brand to use, make sure you stay away from cakey formulas that will dry out your skin. Here are two foundations that will moisturize your skin and control its oil production:

After using setting powder, you may want to use setting spray to add moisture while locking everything in place. Setting spray helps the makeup to blend on your face while giving a hydrating effect.

HIGH-END: ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR STAY IN PLACE FOUNDATION Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation is popular because it has impressive oil control and lasts all day. It has been around for years and is worth the price.

DRUGSTORE: MAYBELLINE FIT ME MATTE + PORELESS FOUNDATION If there is a drugstore matte foundation we swear by, it has to be this one. It leaves a smooth finish and has high oil control. Celebrity makeup artists swear by this foundation for long days and warm days.

3 SETTING POWDER Setting powder is essential because it enhances the existing makeup coverage while keeping excess oil at bay. Make sure you do not over-apply setting powder to avoid a dry finish. We recommend these two setting powders:

HIGH-END: KIMCHI PUFF PUFF PASS SETTING/ BAKING POWDER The Kimchi makeup line was created with drag queens in mind, so it caters to makeup that needs to stay on for long hours. The Puff Puff Pass powder can be used to set and bake your makeup. We highly recommend this product for those with oily skin.

DRUGSTORE: WET N WILD PHOTO FOCUS LOOSE SETTING POWDER

This setting powder has a weightless formula that mattifies and shines well. It is affordable yet effective, and your makeup will last for hours!

We recommend these products for oil control:

HIGH-END: ONE/SIZE ON ‘TILL DAWN SETTING SPRAY

One/Size’s setting spray has a mattifying and waterproof formula that is highly recommended. We can guarantee you that this setting spray is worth every single cent.

DRUGSTORE: E.L.F. STAY ALL NIGHT SETTING SPRAY

We cannot recommend this setting spray enough! The name says it all your makeup will stay all night long.

5 FIXING SPRAY We suggest sealing your look with a fixing spray. Fixing sprays are generally waterproof, sweat, and oil-proof. They also help to give your skin a radiant appearance and ensure that your makeup does not look dry. Here are two fixing sprays that work excellently:

HIGH-END: KRYOLAN FIXING SPRAY This fixing spray is the best in the market. It creates an invisible protective film, extending the wear time of your makeup look. It is smudge-proof and rub-proof.

DRUGSTORE: REVOLUTION MAKEUP’S MATTE OIL CONTROL FIXING SPRAY

Revolution’s fixing spray is affordable yet highly effective. This product limits transfer, keeping your makeup look locked-in. You can say bye-bye to a shiney makeup finish. Stay flawless and enjoy your summer with confidence! Fisile Mabuza is Social Media Editor for Hope Magazine. KARDEA BROWN TAKING GULLAH GLOBAL BY BRITTANY K. HUNT MYHOPEMAG.COM summer 2024

25

Cover Story

veryone has a story to tell, and each person chooses a medium with which to communicate that story. Kardea Brown is no exception, using food as her storyteller. She is a proud South Carolinian who has highlighted her Gullah roots through a culinary path. This cook is a natural storyteller. From the pages of her cookbook to her television show, Delicious Miss Brown, and even on social media, her relatable stories resonate with the audience’s souls and belly. Not everyone’s path will look the same because there is more than one way to success. As African American millennials, many of us were taught the path to success is to go to college, earn a degree, and get a good job with benefits so you can take care of yourself. Translation: So you will be safe. What many of our elders were trying to convey is that they wanted us to lead a financially independent life – what some older people defined as success. The reality is the bills will be there whether or not you have a good job. That’s not living, though. Living is the ability to work and rest doing something you enjoy. Kardea, also known as Delicious Miss Brown, did not take a direct route to that persona. She did what many millennials are taught to do: go to college and earn a degree so you can get a good job with benefits and take care of yourself. However, she and many others have learned that those are society’s suggestions for success, but the truth is there is more than one pathway to success, and like art, success is subjective. Delicious Miss Brown has carved out a culinary lane that pays homage to her island roots while elevating that comfort food with her style and flair, finding joy and fulfillment in her work. She even exudes Southern comfort with her voice!

Q&A What’s your favorite meal to EAT, and what memory is it connected to? Shrimp and Grits are my favorite meal to eat AND cook. My grandmother cooked it when shrimp was in season in Charleston. It is a dish our family loves to make, and a meal birthed out of necessity. The memory it is connected to is my grandmother cooking it on Sunday mornings after working the graveyard shift as an RN. This meal has a lot of love and care in it, and when I smell it cooking, it takes me to another place! I would eat it seven days a week if I could.

26

MYHOPEMAG.COM summer 2024

What transferable skills did you take from your previous career as a social worker and now use in culinary TV and media? I always say it is the people-to-people skill when working with the general public, it helps you relate to people more. There is a lot of heart involved. Social work is not a profession you go into or stay in for the money; you go into it to be of help. My authenticity contributes to the show's success because of the heart-to-heart connection. Speaking of authenticity, your authenticity really shines through in your cookbook. It reads like a memoir, a history book, and a cookbook combined. The background information you provide behind the recipes and how the ingredients or entire recipes are connected to your family origin, which you then elevate, is outstanding!

Do you have a favorite snack or treat that is a mainstay in your house? My fiancée and I usually follow up something savory with something sweet. Chocolate is my go-to sweet treat. I also love ice cream, Jeni’s Salty Caramel is my favorite. Did you always want a culinary career? How did you get there by way of social work? Coming from a family with an education-focused matriarch, the goal was to go to college and earn a degree to get a good job and work that job until retirement, with some of your desires trickling in. But I wanted to try something different because social work was beginning to cause me to experience mental anguish. It was very scary, but that whisper from God said just go! My mom was very supportive, but my grandmother was hesitant and asked questions like, “What do you mean you are going to be traveling around doing a supper club? What is a supper club?” I said to my grandma there are no guarantees working for someone else; they could decide today that they are done, and then you would have to find a new way to support yourself. What pantry staples do you suggest new cooks have in their kitchens? Maybe it’s the Geechee in me, but always keep white rice on hand because you can build a meal with rice. The pantry has white rice, wild rice, grits, flour, and sugar. In my fridge: butter, milk, eggs. Chicken thighs, ground beef, veggies, peas, and carrots are in the freezer. You can easily whip up a stir-fry or casserole with these ingredients. What’s your favorite meal of the day? Breakfast! My mom was such a stickler when it came to breakfast. I will whip up a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich in a heartbeat!

Cover Story

How do you deal with losing anonymity and becoming a public figure? It has taken time and is still taking time. I am settling into the role of being a public figure, and there has also been a learning curve coming from a viewer's place. As open and transparent as I am, I have to remember that my family and friends did not sign up for that. Despite being an empath and learning to take constructive criticism while dealing with the trolls, I'm learning not to take things personally. Talking to my peers in the industry, who explain that you really don’t get used to them, but you learn to navigate them. I’ve had people send emails to my personal email to tell me that they don’t like my hair or that I am overweight. However, people need to know that I am still a human being with feelings, and people don’t know what others are going through. I once read one of those unkind emails after learning that a close family member unexpectedly passed. It was extremely hard. What’s your favorite food city (aside from your hometown) and why? NYC! (Queue up Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys's Empire State of Mind.) My mom was raised in New York City, and I have deep roots there. No matter how many times I visit NYC within the year, there is always something new, fun, authentic, and exciting! I could gain a hundred pounds in a weekend because all I do is eat through the city! One of my favorite places is an authentic Thai street food restaurant, Fish Cheeks, which is so good. How has your kitchen cookware evolved? What equipment or small appliances are a must-have for you? Years ago, when I got this question, I’d say all you need is your hands in the kitchen, and that is still true, but now there are a few things that I cannot live without in my kitchen: my food processor to help finely mince garlic or onion, my KitchenAid Mixer with various attachments, and my handheld Julienne mandoline. What story do you want your food to tell the person or people eating and enjoying it? They are loved, and their food was prepared with love and consideration, including their likes and dislikes. That is one of the reasons why it took so long to get my frozen food meals to market. The development process was long, but I wanted the food as close as possible to what I would prepare for you in my house. And I have four new Delicious Eats meals coming out soon!

What are you hopeful for this year? A successful season 10 and more opportunities to expand my brand.

Quick questions for a good time, not a long time: SAVORY or sweet CHOCOLATE or vanilla Coffee or TEA EARLY BIRD or night owl And the never-ending discussion of SALT or sugar in your grits Watch or record Delicious Miss Brown season 10, which airs on the Food Network on Sundays at 11 a.m., and purchase The Way Home, Kardea’s phenomenal cookbook.

Brittany is a book lover with a continuously expanding To Be Read (TBR) List and her unofficial love language is good food! She lives in an Atlanta suburb with her husband and two daughters.

Summer Home Refresh Ideas to brighten up your space BY MAURITA SUTTON BROWN

28

MYHOPEMAG.COM summer 2024

At Home

s summer approaches and the sun shines brighter, it's time to infuse your home with the vibrant energy of the season. Refreshing your décor can transform your home into a summer oasis. Whether you're hosting backyard barbecues or seeking solace in the cool comfort of your living room, incorporating summer décor can enhance your space and lift your spirits. From breezy textiles to playful accents, here are some ideas to help you transform your home into a summertime retreat.

Embrace Light and Airy Fabrics Curtains, throws, and pillows are essential for enhancing any space in your home. For summer, swap out heavy fabrics for lightweight materials in cheerful colors and patterns. Sheer curtains allow sunlight to filter through, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Choose pillows and throws made from breathable materials like cotton or linen, adorned with tropical motifs or nautical stripes for a touch of summer whimsy.

Bring the Outdoors in Celebrate the beauty of nature by incorporating botanical elements into your décor. Place potted plants around your home to add a pop of greenery and purify the air. While faux plants are convenient, real potted plants are perfect for summer. Arrange bouquets of fresh flowers in various vases to infuse your space with fragrance and charm. Consider botanical artwork prints or nature-inspired family photos on a gallery wall to bring the outdoors inside.

Pops of Color Color choices are crucial for setting the mood in your home. Inject energy and vitality with bright pops of color. Choose accessories like rugs and interchangeable wall art in vibrant hues such as coral, turquoise, and citrus tones. Mix and match patterns and textures to create visual interest and depth.

Create a Summer Decor Theme A coastal theme is perfect for capturing the laidback spirit of summer. Incorporate elements like weathered wood, rope accents, and seashell motifs to evoke a seaside retreat. Hang woven baskets on the walls to store towels or beach essentials, and display collections of shells or driftwood for charming accents. If the coastal look appeals to you, consider adding a surfboard or paddleboard as a statement piece.

Lighting Sets the Mood Strategic lighting choices can create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. With more daylight in the summer, choose diffused lighting for a cozy indoor retreat. Candles, especially those inside lanterns, scented with summery fragrances like coconut or citrus, can evoke memories of lazy days spent in the sun. With a few simple updates, you can infuse your home with the carefree spirit of summer and create a space that's both stylish and inviting. From light and airy fabrics to playful accents inspired by the outdoors, there are countless ways to refresh your home décor for the summer season. Embrace the warmth and sunshine, and let your home reflect the joy and relaxation that summer brings.

WATERMELON RECIPES TO SWEETEN YOUR DAYS

Relive the joy of summers past BY SHARELL JOHNSON

ummers were epic growing up in the Low Country of South Carolina in the 90s! My cousins and I didn’t attend summer camps or visit relatives up North. Instead, we played kickball and hung out in my granddad’s watermelon field until we were called in for a bath and supper. Each of us would run full speed to find the biggest watermelon to sit on. We talked, laughed, read our favorite books, and even hosted picnics right in the middle of endless rows of watermelon. Of course, the highlight of our day was always the watermelon! Granddad would dramatically whip out his pocketknife and cut diagonally down the middle of the watermelon. We would then play Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine who would get the “heart,” the very first piece located right in the center of the watermelon. It was the sweetest, juiciest, and most brag-worthy piece of the watermelon. As a chef, watermelon is my favorite fruit to incorporate into my summer dishes. Watermelon is sweet, tender, playful, and versatile. It’s a bona fide crowd-pleaser at any event or dinner table. It can be served alone, with a main dish, or even as a cocktail. I personally like the seeded watermelon from my local fresh market. However, if you are in any small town, you may find a local farmer parked in a parking lot or at a convenience store with a truck full of local fruits—BEST WATERMELONS EVER! But if seedless watermelon is all you have, it works too! Here are 5 of my favorite watermelon recipes that are sure to please!

Food

1 Watermelon Smoothies This is such a refreshing drink for any time of the day. You can freeze it, pour it over some ice, or even mix it with your favorite spirits!

INGREDIENTS 2-4 servings 1

cup of watermelon cubes (if using seeded watermelon, be sure to remove all seeds completely)

1

tablespoon of flax seeds

2

cups of water

Note: For a thicker texture, add in frozen fruits like bananas or strawberries. Place all ingredients in your favorite blender and blend away!

2 Sweet and Spicy Watermelon Balls

Warning: Make plenty of them! These little things are highly addictive and will go fast!

INGREDIENTS Serving size... a lot!

Seedless watermelon Lemon juice Tajin seasoning With a melon scooper, or any scooper, carve out your melon balls. It’s okay if your balls are uneven—they are so delicious that no one will notice or care! Place balls on a paper towel and pat dry. Remove the paper towel and slightly drizzle fresh lemon juice onto the balls. On a plate, parchment paper, or any covered flat surface, generously sprinkle Tajin seasoning on your surface and gently roll the balls into the seasoning. Plate, place on toothpicks, and serve. They taste even better chilled!

This light summer salad is commonly served with feta cheese. However, replacing it with blue cheese crumbles will give this classic summer recipe a sharp twist that no one will see coming.

4 Balsamic Glazed Pork and Watermelon Skewers

I love a good sweet and salty combo, and these skewers definitely meet the requirements! Pair with a simple garden salad or a flavorful rice pilaf, and you have a winner for dinner!

INGREDIENTS 4-6 servings

MARINADE

½ cup olive oil

Boneless pork chops or pork tenderloins

Juice of 1 fresh lemon

Watermelon cubes

½ cup Worcestershire sauce

Sliced green peppers

1 garlic clove, chopped

Sliced purple onions

½ cup apple cider vinegar

Salt/pepper In a mixing bowl, combine marinade ingredients and whisk. Slice pork into cubes. Place your pork cubes and thyme leaf into the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for a minimum of 30 minutes. Place marinated pork, onions, peppers, and watermelon cubes on skewers. You can bake, grill, pan-fry, or place skewers in an air fryer until desired pork temperature. Plate and drizzle with your favorite balsamic glaze.

5 Watermelon Mojito Slices

Perfect for a backyard party or a girl’s brunch, this boozy treat will be the life of the party… Chef’s honor!

INGREDIENTS

Serving size... the more the better! Watermelon slices Limes (enough for zest, juicing, and garnish)

Rum White sugar Chopped mint leaves (leave a few for garnish)

Combine lime juice, lime zest, sugar, chopped mint leaves, and rum into a container big enough to fully immerse watermelon slices. Mix to taste. Place watermelon slices into the container, cover, and refrigerate for at least one hour. Plate and garnish with limes and mint leaves. Mocktails? No problem! Ditch the rum!

Harvesting watermelons is still a tradition in my family. My dad now harvests them and ensures to send me off with at least a half dozen during every trip home. Watermelons are such a beautiful summer treat. They can be served anywhere and at any time of day. From children to adults, a nice slice of watermelon is a delight. But a jazzed-up watermelon is unforgettable. Remember to support your local farmers!
