IT in Health and Social Care Adam Drury, Chair, BCS ASSIST
Overview • Where have we come from? • Where are we now?
• Where are we headed? • How can SMEs support health and social
care organisations?
2
The Past – 70’s and 80’s • Rise of GP computing • Formation of large Hospital Information Systems –
some successes (e.g. Wirral) and some failures (e.g. Wessex) • Mainly for resource management or administrative
purposes, not direct clinical care • Enthusiast / pioneer led –
no central strategy • Very little IT for social care 3
The Past – 90’s • Consolidation and accreditation of GP
systems • Development of the health informatics
profession • ‘Information for Health’ Strategy – first
informatics strategy for clinical care, but acute hospital focussed • Concept of Electronic Patient Record
‘levels’ and a ‘cradle to grave’ Electronic Health Record • Some funding available but not ring-
fenced for IT • No social care IT strategy 4
The Past – 00’s • National Programme for IT (NPfIT)
– Central funding and procurement of systems for implementation locally – Mixed success – N3, Choose and Book, GPSoC, PACS vs. SCR and NCRS • Local innovations put in place to support the cost
saving (QIPP)
5
The Present….. • Demise of the National Programme for IT
(some national projects will continue) • Increased procurement of organisational
wide clinical systems or portals • Increased use of technology to reduce cost,
improve efficiency and enhance patient safety

– Standards and Interoperability – Integrated Infrastructure (e.g. PSN, G-cloud)
– Stimulate Economic Growth – more competitive marketplace • Patient / Citizen Centred 10
Opportunities for SMEs • Right Environment…
