hello lovlies, We are so excited for Mother’s Day here at Brick & Mortar Living. There is a lot to celebrate when it comes to Mama’s and all that they do! We certainly know we wouldn’t be where we are today without our own Mama Bear. In recognition of this modern celebration of Mother’s, we have brought together some of our friends to show you just how great you can treat your mom this coming Sunday. Our first ever gift guide is all about the mom and what she would love to be gifted, other than the often-undervalued hug. We’ve curated some awesome locally made goods to treat a few different types of mamas, like the new mama and the dog mama. With help from our truly talented friends, we hope we’ve created a simple & beautiful guide to gifting mom. At Brick & Mortar we aspire to create an enjoyable and memorable shopping experience, with a focus on local designs, unique gifts and nostalgia for the home. Join us on the weekend of May 9th & 10th for a very special Mother’s Day Floral popup shop with Blossom & Vine Floral Co.; a one stop shop for your gift, card and flowers. Sincerely,
Julia & Emma

MICHELLE
of BLOSSOM & VINE Everyone has a journey, how did your career as a florist begin? I have always had an infamous, at times comical, ability to kill plants. Growing up, my family loved to garden so I learned a lot about flowers but was never able to keep anything alive. I contributed to my family’s love of gardening by picking giant bunches of dandelions for the dining room table. My Dad got me my first floristry job at the ripe old age of 6; while he went out into the woods to cut firewood, I collected moss and stuffed it into garbage bags. I made $2 a bag. How did Blossom & Vine come to exist? I reached a point in my career where I had an opportunity to take a hiatus and after a whirlwind 6 months of getting married, moving to a new city, losing loved ones and being completely burnt out, I knew it was time to shake things up. I’ve always had a creative side and a knack for making things pretty so on a whim I took a few floral design workshops and classes. I was hooked. Creating with my hands and being pumped about not only what I was producing but also the process was enough of a motivator for me to take the leap and start Blossom & Vine. I’m as much an entrepreneur as I am a creative so getting to experience both has been exciting, liberating and terrifying all in the same go. ››

Q&A with MICHELLE of BLOSSOM & VINE It’s momma’s day, did your mom play a significant part in the creation of your business? My mom rocks! She has been a huge source of inspiration for me from the get go. With 3 young kids and a husband that worked away from home, she picked up and went back to school full-time when I was 8. She has taught me everything I know about determination, dedication and just going for it. What inspires you to be creative on a daily basis? I find inspiration in everything. I am inspired by nature most often. But it also comes at random: funky vintage wallpaper patterns, a successful foraging mission, etc. When working with clients I usually use them themselves as inspiration: what they like, what they wear, what music they listen to, and then try to capture that vibe through florals while also instilling a bit of my own personality in there as well.
Last but not least - you’re participating in a floral pop up shop for Mother’s day at B&M, what can shoppers expect from Blossom & Vine? For the Mothers Day Pop-Up, I used the moms in my life as inspiration. There will be something for every mom: spring blooms or succulents in china tea cups as well as take away bouquets or vase arrangements. They scream spring and are sure to brighten any mom’s day. Blossom & Vine Floral Co. is a floral design studio run by Michelle Hodgson and based in New Westminster. When not playing with flowers, you can probably find her listening to something loud, drinking copious amounts of coffee, crafting, and exploring the city.
