the people are the spirit Meet your instructor Leslie Granbeck, felt making classes An avid beader and teacher for many years, Leslie Granbeck’s talents took a new direction when she discovered the art of turning wool fibers into beads. Intrigued by color, texture, and always looking for new challenges, her love of felted beads and jewelry blossomed to include the art of felt making. “Felt making is magical. Imagine turning simple wool fibers into scarves, purses, jewelry, even garments,” she said. Let Leslie introduce you to the fascinating art of felt making. Leslie has traveled around the globe, is a professional photographer, and speaks Spanish.

Experience the magic of felt making for yourself, see page 3.

From the Coordinator As the new year dawns and beckons a commitment to new beginnings, we present to you our catalog of learning and engagement opportunities for winter and spring. There are hundreds of classes here to captivate your mind, body, and spirit — offering something for literally everyone. We hope that you will take your resolutions and dreams and allow them to come to full fruition by challenging yourself to get involved in some of the activities presented to you by Hopkins Community Education. Did you know? There were 63 million Google searches for “getting healthy” in the first half of last year; 33 million searches for “getting organized”; 19 million searches on “living life to the fullest”; 18 million on “learning new hobbies”; 16 million on “saving money”; and 6 million searches for "adding travel to your life." My guess is that you can find yourself in these Google searches, especially now at this time of new year resolutions. Luckily, all of these topic and interest areas are included in the pages of this catalog — plus a whole lot more. Research shows that it takes more than a Google search — that the key to success is small, incremental change, fun activities, and a community with whom to share your experience. Interestingly, those are the very things we value and strive for each day in Community Education — bite-sized learning, fun activities, and a caring community to share in the joy each step of the way. Let 2018 be the year to see your dreams and resolutions take hold and flourish. Join us for a year of engaged learning with your neighbors and friends. Hopkins Community Education is here as your partner and cheerleader. We value your input, investment, support, and dedication. Thank you! Wishing you a bright and prosperous new year! See you in class,

Andrea Sjogren, Adult Program Coordinator

Unleash Your Creativity, continued from back cover page that persist even in difficult times. As we have witnessed here in Hopkins and beyond, we are at a crossroads of social change. Our communities, and those like ours, have emerged as vibrant, diverse, cultural reservoirs waiting to be tapped, appreciated, and understood. The arts can take us there. The arts have a long history of bringing people together across obvious or unsuspecting lines and divisions. The arts can increase our understanding of one another, support our ability to create and find meaning, and give all people an opportunity to preserve and share their stories. The arts allow us to build bridges between cultures, neighborhoods, and families. The arts enhance a strong community Artists and arts-loving organizations are an important resource on the road to building stronger communities. The artistic process opens opportunities for more level and engaged conversation among groups, which leads to insight and a shared sense of community. This can lay the groundwork for exploration about how to maintain vital cultural and community traditions while inviting much-needed local investment and engagement in all areas of community life. Still, it isn't only artists and organizations that are stewards of creative opportunities for strength and

connection in communities. You can be, too. Take the time to attend a community dialog and learn more about what's happening. Improve and beautify your neighborhood when you can; participate in community projects; find a friend and develop community in an art class; make a bowl for the annual community-wide Empty Bowls fundraising benefit. You'll be surprised how these small, creative acts can change your thinking, open a world that you never knew, start a conversation, bridge the divide with a neighbor, or ignite the perception of increased neighborhood value and strength. Create your healthy neighborhood Integrating the arts more fully into our lives enriches each of us in untold ways, and because engaging in the arts brings individuals together, it fosters community. Art is everywhere, and the arts are for everyone! Each of us has the ability to create and to imagine a way to make our neighborhood as healthy and strong as it can possibly be. Join us in Hopkins Community Education as we continue to utilize the arts and creative work to foster increased engagement into this wonderful community we call home!

Yin Yoga

Linda Duncanson-Miller

Linda Duncanson-Miller Yin yoga is a form of yoga that involves light stretching to your ability in supported poses that are often held for several minutes. It increases flexibility and range of motion through a series of on-the-mat postures. It is set in a calm and meditative/contemplative space. Each pose cultivates inner calm and this practice will open you up to greater awareness by releasing stress in your muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia. Yin is an excellent practice for runners, weightlifters, athletes or yogis that practice more vigorous (yang) types of yoga.
