Peace & Love.

Together we can build a better community.

Is white privilege real or imagined? Let's come together for a community town hall forum and conversation on this topic. White privilege is the notion that white skin affords a group of people inherent privileges and advantages over persons of color. Come and listen to a diverse panel discuss this concept, as well as the historical impact of white privilege and how it continues to affect people's behavior. Bring your friends and neighbors and join us for this community event. Increase your understanding of race, equity, and diversity, and promote a sense of community that welcomes and values all residents. For similar opportunities, register for our Talking About Race & Racism with Kids workshop and more on page 23.

Deb Vick is a wardrobe planner who enjoys helping women streamline their closets to create chic, coordinated, and versatile wardrobes that are the ultimate reflection of who they are. Inspired by her own quest to reinvent her look, Deb now enjoys sharing her new-found strategies to help guide women in re-evaluating their wardrobes. Deb’s focus is on using fashion to create an ageless, updated, and youthful style. She believes style is a personal expression of who you are. “It is the woman inside the clothes that we admire, and when those clothes capture her own way of being, that is what ultimately intrigues us.”

Karen has been dyeing natural fibers and growing plants for dye since the mid-70s. Her experience and passion led her to start teaching natural plant dyeing classes in the Twin Cities area. She now teaches at folk schools, community centers, and to other groups interested in learning about nature’s color palette, dyeing, Japanese Shibori, and painting on silk. She is a professional pianist, amateur cellist, and teaches private piano lessons to children and adults. Some of her other hobbies include fishing, Japanese Ink Painting, gardening, and ham radio.

An avid beader and teacher for many years, Leslie Granbeck’s talents took a new direction when she discovered the art of turning wool fibers into beads. Intrigued by color, texture, and always looking for new challenges, her love of felted beads and jewelry blossomed to include the art of feltmaking.

Update your wardrobe with Debbie, check out her class on page 20.

Try Karen’s natural and botanical art classes, see page 7.

From the Coordinator I’ve recently been involved in a graduate class that focuses partially on the concept of placemaking. My participation has allowed me a great platform to talk about and discuss the strong assets and beautiful community that one can easily find in Hopkins and the surrounding area! Placemaking often refers most directly to neighborhood places and spaces, but is also focused on a community’s strengths, inspiration, and potential. The big idea of placemaking is to create a livable community that promotes people's health, happiness, and well-being. Physical space, citizen engagement and connection, and life long learning all play a part. I see evidence of that in our community daily. There are wonderful opportunities to cultivate creativity, to improve health, to establish connections, to find wellness, to create change, to share conversation, to meet, greet, and mingle, to learn, grow, and thrive. Hopkins Community Education is one partner in the quest to ensure places for optimum living. Community Education is more than a collection of classes. It is also a process by which members of a community learn to work together, identify issues, seek creative solutions, engage with one another, and learn for life. According to research, communities grow stronger when citizens regularly and persistently do a variety of simple things together that give them chances to connect with others, build trust, and get involved in doing things together. Join us this fall and engage in your community. Learn something new, try a class, cultivate a hobby, attend a community forum, share your ideas, meet your neighbors, and continue to create a community that welcomes all and allows each to truly thrive. In celebration of our great community,

Andrea Sjogren, Adult Program Coordinator

Sparking a Conversation, continued from back cover page The group at Eisenhower shared personal accounts of being affected by a single story or incomplete perception, the impact of single stories on our Hopkins community, and future actions that will allow us to move beyond the single stories in our community. The incredible wealth of positive and creative solutions clearly indicates that Hopkins is a community ready for action.

Department, Gethsemane Lutheran Church, and Hopkins Public Schools. The Initiative hosted its first community conversation on race at Eisenhower Community Center last spring. Over 200 people were in attendance representing various cultures, ethnicities, and ages, from across the community. There was an eager and positive energy in the room throughout the event. First community conversation The evening started by viewing a short clip of the powerful TED Talk entitled, The Danger of a Single Story. In this talk, Yale graduate and author, Chimamanda Adichie, weaves together her personal story of growing up in Nigeria and moving to the United States for college, with a provocative discussion on the nature of stories and storytelling. She calls attention to the inherent danger of looking at people through the lens of one single story. In short, defining an experience or making judgments of others based on a single perception gives us incomplete and potentially damaging understandings of other people. "The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story, notes Adichie.

Learning opportunities this fall As next steps, several learning and engagement opportunities are being planned for this fall. As with all positive community building, education is key. The Race and Equity Initiative is eager to move from education to understanding, and from talk to action. Join us for these enriching, mobilizing, action-oriented learning experiences. See our workshops below. Mark your calendar for the Race & Equity Town Hall Forum on October 24, details on inside front cover.

Unique opportunities to spark conversations. NEW! Talking About Race and Racism with Kids Denise Konen

Children are dealing with racial issues every day in the media and through interactions at home, school, and sports. building a great place to live

Hopkins is a strong community with racial, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity. We are a unique community with a strong heritage of high quality schools, vibrant faith communities, and comprehensive city services. For generations, this community has worked together to increase the quality of life for all residents. As the community population changes, it’s time to leverage this heritage to maintain a vibrant Hopkins community for future generations. It is in our rich diversity of race and culture that Hopkins finds its greatest strengths.

A small and committed group of Hopkins leaders has recently formed the Hopkins Race and Equity Initiative. The goal of the Initiative is to bring a series of guided conversations and learning events focused on race and equity issues to the Hopkins community. This unique partnership is currently drawn from the Hopkins Police more Sparking a Conversation on page 23
