From the Coordinator

We’re nearly into a new year and that means that roughly 45% of us will make some sort of New Year’s resolution very soon. Then, just one month from now, only 8% will have sustained their effort on that same resolution to the point of some kind of success. Instead of being discouraged, perhaps we need to reframe our ideas about resolutions. It’s true that the dawn of a new year brings us a great chance to start fresh and to make change. That’s important. However, what if the purpose of a resolution is the process — the infinite present moments in which transformation will occur — rather than waiting and hoping for a single instance of attainment? What if we were mindful and present enough to see complete success in each attempt toward our resolutions? Those statistics will look a lot better, and we’ll be much happier with our success. Our Community Education catalog here in Hopkins is filled with classes, opportunities, and events that will jump-start your resolutions and your new year. Find the time to practice a mindful approach to your New Year’s resolutions, and celebrate every effort on the path to transformation. Cook, garden, practice yoga, try Pilates, de-clutter, draw, paint, sing, dance, build, exercise, hike, manage your money, learn a foreign language… Ultimately, New Year’s resolutions are about growth and improvement. They are about bringing health and joy into our lives. With mindfulness we can bring awareness to our habits, and hold ourselves with compassion and kindness as we seek meaningful transformation. Connect, engage, and steady your resolve for a bright new year and a bright new you!

See you in class!

“It’s unbelievable and magical how the doors began to open for me through the adult students in Hopkins Community Education Hand Drumming I and II classes,” said Carmen. With great passion, Carmen started her own drum circle called “Drum Chix and Stix” and she has had opportunities that she could only have imagined before drumming came back into her life with a vengeance.

Take Carmen’s Challenge: Carmen invites you to experience the graciousness and lifechanging abundance she experienced by taking a single drumming class with Hopkins Community Education. Embrace your opportunity to take a class and let it truly enrich your life. Be true to yourself.

Benefits of drumming Did you know? Current research shows the therapeutic effects of drumming techniques. Research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing and boosts the immune system. In addition, specific studies conducted by professionals in the fields of music therapy and mental health show us that drumming reduces tension, anxiety, and stress, helps control pain, and releases emotional trauma and negativity.

Find your passion. We, in community education, are grateful for amazing instructors like Carmen. What’s your passion? What are you longing to try? To discover? Try hand drumming (below), or another class that speaks to your true self. See what changes occur in your life. There are many opportunities waiting for you this winter and spring in our classrooms.

TIME VALUE

Drumming Up a Passion. Carmen Dougherty-Heim found her rhythm in high school band. She also loved playing trap set with her family combo. College provided additional choices and new opportunities, and drumming was replaced with a chance to play guitar at local events. Carmen enjoyed a wonderful career in vocational rehabilitation counseling but later took stock and pondered the things she truly loved and was drawn to in life.
