Did you know that in 2016, there were almost 800 enriching classes offered to adults through Hopkins Community Education in addition to the myriad opportunities for young people and families? 2017 will offer up even more great possibilities for learning and connecting. If you've always wanted to learn and experiment with pottery, this is the class for you! Start your clay-learning process by mastering various hand-building methods and get an introduction to the potter's wheel. Steve will give you lots of individual instruction as you create your projects.

Students must be able to attend the first three sessions. **

This class introduces the basic hand-building techniques, including slab, coil, and patch approaches to making pottery. Make cups, plates, bowls, and platters with these basic techniques. This class will have four weeks of creating pieces and a final glaze class. **

Advanced Pottery on the Wheel Claire O’Connor

Express your passion with clay as you continue your pottery skills! Pottery students with a firm foundation in basic technical skills will enjoy this class. Explore a variety of creative surface treatments while making a felted wall hanging or table runner. Learn to add texture, color, and depth to felt using inlays, resists, fine fabrics and more. Create craters, fissures, and other innovative surface designs. Some wet felting experience is helpful. $30 materials fee includes all fibers and supplies and is payable to instructor. **

Think spring with a bouquet of handmade, colorful felted flowers you make using wool fibers and a little soapy water. Mosaic Stained Glass Window or Lamp Peggy Ingles

Explore the luminous art of stained glass with an updated technique that is easy and fun to do. Explore glass cutting in the first session, then work on your original art piece at the second. Bring your own design ideas or use the patterns provided. Dress for a mess at the second session, as we apply grout and watch the magic happen to your project! Create a beautiful viking weave bracelet that is woven from chains made from long pieces of wire, worked by hand into interconnecting loops, and spliced together in a way that is nearly impossible to detect in the finished piece. You will need the following tools: Fine point marker, tape measure and ruler, 10 yards of 26-gauge wire (gold, silver, or copper) and 18 inches of 16-gauge craft wire (any color). How To Talk About Contemporary Art

This workshop covers basic strategies for enjoying and discussing art. The first session covers the basics of art history, art styles, and techniques of making different types of art.

Session two will take place at the Minneapolis Institute of Art where Wren will lead you through the galleries, creating the opportunity to practice your newly acquired vocabulary. All levels are welcome for this interactive and fun opportunity. Museum entry fee may apply.

This workshop is designed to help you engage with conceptual art, post-modern art, and more — like the art exhibited by contemporary art museums such as The Walker Art Center. Students will learn the difference between contemporary, modern, and historical art. Engage in topics such as the intention of the artist, the role of the audience, and art in society. This course is designed for all levels, but should enrich both the novice and the experienced student. Create a ceramic bowl for the Empty Bowls fundraiser. Empty Bowls is an international event to fight hunger. Communities around the world make ceramic bowls, which are sold at fundraising events in exchange for a simple meal of soup and bread. The funds raised will support the work of ICA Food Shelf and ResourceWest. Each participant will build two bowls by hand — one to donate to the Empty Bowls event, and one to keep. Abstract Painting Wren Supak

This class will give you the tools to develop your voice as an artist. Study abstract painters, styles, and demonstrations, and take a field trip to see local abstract art. Emphasis on formal aspects like color, composition, line, shape, and value will help you accomplish your work technically. Take part in individual and group critiques, including discussions of common concerns such as, “how do I know when the painting is finished?” This class meets you at your level and strengthens it! Learn to make savory, healthy breads using dough mixed in minutes and stored for up to two weeks in your refrigerator. Discover the basic theory of artisan breads using wet dough. Bake a loaf in class to take home, plus mix a batch of dough to take home. Receive recipes for various artisan breads. Discover the unique attributes of rye bread and multi-grain in class. Discover the secrets to making delicious sushi for yourself, family and friends! Learn shopping tips, ingredient prep, assembly of the rolls, and presentation. We will create both the traditional rolled sushi (makizushi) and the American California sushi. Discover the fine art of twined rag rug weaving — a great way to repurpose old clothing or extra fabric. In class, you will learn the warping process, develop weaving techniques, and learn the finishing process for your own unique rug creation. Leave class with a completed rug and the knowledge to create beautiful pieces for your home, cabin, or friends and family. You will start the rug in class and complete it at home. On the second session we will finish the project. Class time is 2.5 hours per evening but 10 or more hours of work at home between classes will be essential in order to finish. For over 30 years, Project SOAR has been a leader in providing options and positive experiences for adults with disabilities in Community Education. Project SOAR provides specially designed enrichment classes in arts, crafts, sewing and cooking. We also offer recreational and leisure activities such as bowling, movie night, bingo and dances to meet the diverse needs of the participants. Project SOAR will provide accommodations such as sign language interpreters for participants to gain access to these classes and activities if needed.

Minnetonka Senior Services (MSS) Minnetonka Senior Services (MSS), at the Minnetonka Community Center, located at 14600 Minnetonka Boulevard, provides opportunities for adults of all ages to enroll in classes, services, trips, and social events (a sampling is listed below).

Checks for programs, classes and trips are payable to Minnetonka Senior Services or “MSS.” All students pay the same fee regardless of age! Scholarships are available to Minnetonka residents age 55 and over, for events, classes, and one day trips. Scholarships are confidential. Call 952-939-8393.

Inclement Weather Information If the Hopkins School District is closed due to bad weather, then Community Education classes and activities may be cancelled.

• We will gladly refund your class registration fee, or switch your class, if you cancel five business days prior to the first class.

Discounts Information

Residents of Hopkins School Districts, 62 years and older, and Hopkins Public Schools employees are eligible for some discounts as follows: • For cooking classes, may reduce fee by $5.

• For pottery classes, may reduce fee by $25.

• For most other classes, the discount is 25% off the regular fee not including materials or textbook fees. Exceptions include all computer classes, trips and other courses as noted in the description.

• Hopkins Public Schools employees are limited to one discounted class per session.

• No discounts for classes at Hopkins Activity Center or Minnetonka Senior Center In addition, there are occasional “promotional discounts” that are available to individuals subscribed to Hopkins Community Education’s E-Club. You can subscribe to E-Club (to receive e-newsletters and special discounts) at www.HopkinsCommunityEd.org.

Health Plan Discounts

All UCare Minnesota or Metropolitan Health Plan (MHP) members may take up to a $15 discount per class on most classes. Members must be on UCare or MHP at the time of registration and through the duration of the class. Indicate ID number(s) on the registration form.

Fee Assistance

Community Education has limited fee assistance available to School District residents who qualify and are unable to pay the full registration fee. For information and application, please call 952-988-4070.
