Building a great place to live HopkinsEducation: Community Education Early Childhood • 952-988-5000 1 Hopkins Community Early Childhood Programs

Welcome to Hopkins Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a key component to Hopkins’ Great to World Class vision. Our early childhood families are one of our inspirations for reimagining our school district. The community you are building when you join our classes will be a community that lasts through your child’s school career — and Hopkins early childhood staff thank you for the trust you place in us. ECFE offers classes on Monday and Tuesday evening for families with children from birth to age 5 (pages 4-6). If a weekly schedule is not a fit for you, we offer a Monthly Meet-Up class for families who want to stay connected to ECFE (page 9). And of course, we have a wide variety of daytime classes so you can find the right choice for your family. Parents from across our District choose ECFE classes to engage in discussion, create a supportive parenting community, and provide an educational jumpstart to preschool (and beyond) for their children. Check out our ECFE video at HopkinsSchools.org/early to see our classes in action. If you have questions, need help finding a class that fits your needs, or have ideas for future classes, please call us at 952-988-5000, (select option #4). We welcome you to our programs and value your family — because you belong in Hopkins! See you in class! Sara Chovan, Early Childhood & Parent Education Programs Coordinator

Hopkins Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) Our trusted Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program offers affordable, high quality classes that support you and your young children. A typical class meets once a week and includes: • Parent-Child Activity. Time for you and your child to enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. You’ll take home new ideas for things you can do together. • Parent Discussion. You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences, and information about child development and parenting techniques. • Children’s Activity Time. While you are in Parent Discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children will practice social skills and enjoy music, art, stories, and physical activities. • And there’s more — join us for Special Topics workshops and fun family events (pages 7-12), and many other exciting activities (back cover)! Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for participants. • Our mission. The mission of Early Childhood Family Education is to strengthen families and support the ability of all parents in providing the best possible environment for healthy growth and development of their children. • Our staff. Our experienced ECFE teaching staff is dedicated to parents and children. Teachers hold a degree and state license in Parent Education, Early Childhood Education, or both. • Questions about classes or programs? We are happy to help! ECFE Overview Early Childhood Family Education

How do I choose the right ECFE class? With so many options, there are classes to fit your needs! Aside from our family events and special topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week. There are day and evening options, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-11. To determine class fee, see the fee scale on page 4 (for Parent/Infant classes) and page 13 (for all other classes). If you have further questions, please call parent educator Kathryn Moore at 952-988-5046. At Hopkins, families are always welcome! Registration remains open for classes that have already started (if space is available). Please contact us for a prorated fee if you’d like to join a class that has already begun. Non-separating classes: You and your child stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class, engaging with them in enriching learning and play activities. A licensed parent educator will lead parent conversations on important topics such as child growth and development, transitioning to parenthood, and how children learn and play. Your child has a chance to play during this supportive group discussion. Gradual-separating classes: In the beginning of gradual-separating classes, you and your child meet in the same room. Parents will move to a separate room gradually as the class progresses. Separate parent meetings begin with short meeting times and are gradually lengthened. Separating classes: You and your child explore activities together for about 30 minutes. This provides an opportunity to learn new ideas, games, songs, and activities that can be used at home. Then, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for conversations related to child development and parenting. Parents share ideas and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge, new connections, and support. Meanwhile, your child will participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided enriching, early learning experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Sibling care is available, if needed, for most classes. Siblings from six months through kindergarten are eligible. Babies who are not yet crawling are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Sign up for it on your registration form, page 14. Immunization information. For ECFE classes 6 weeks or more in length, updated immunization records for your child are due before you and your child participate in the ECFE class. In order to attend ECFE classes, parents must show that they’re in compliance with Minnesota School Immunization Law requirements. Please note: ECFE classes or events shorter than 6 weeks do not require immunization information. See page 15 for more details about immunizations. Parents/guardians may choose to decline immunizations for their children by filing a legal exemption with the school. Copies of the Immunization Record, with directions for filing an exemption, are available in the office at Harley Hopkins Family Center, 125 Monroe Ave. S, Hopkins, MN. See what we’re all about! You & Your 3-5 Year Old How can I help her be a great big sister? How do I set limits — and stick to them? What do we need to do to get ready for school? How can I help her navigate tricky friend situations? It is so exciting to see your child explore his growing independence! In these once-a-week ECFE classes, you will have time with your child during the first portion of class. Then, you and your child will separate into different classrooms. The preschool curriculum gives her opportunities with social skills, reading, art, stories, science, and more. Your child will discover rich and varied learning stations that engage him while developing school-readiness skills. Meanwhile, parents have the opportunity to develop strong connections with other parents. You’ll learn strategies to support your child’s readiness for kindergarten, and the licensed parent educator will lead discussions on your hot topics, such as sibling rivalry, healthy communication, setting limits, and more.

Spotlight on our early childhood staff Meet Angel Petit, ECFE children’s teacher A new member has joined the ECFE children’s teaching team this fall! After attending ECFE with her two boys years ago, Angel Petit knew she wanted to become an ECFE teacher herself. She is now eager to share some of the tools she learned at ECFE that helped her navigate the early years of childhood. Angel is looking forward to getting to know Hopkins families and assisting you in your parenting adventures. Angel has a bachelor’s degree in special education. She worked in early childhood ministry for many years at a large congregation in Maple Grove. More recently, she served as a substitute teacher for Hopkins Preschools. Maple Grove is home for Angel, along with her husband and two children. One of her favorite pastimes is watching her boys play a variety of school sports. During the summer, she enjoys spending time fishing, swimming, and boating. When she gets the chance to travel, Angel’s favorite destination is Arizona, where she has many family members to visit.

Hopkins Preschools Stepping Stones • Kaleidoscope • Stay & Explore Extended-Day Care What makes Hopkins Preschools exceptional: Our curriculum. Inspired by the signature Reggio Emilia approach, our preschool curriculum helps your child learn critical thinking skills while developing social skills. Projects often originate from children’s interests or ideas, and teachers support and guide the project into a deeper academic learning as we prepare children for kindergarten and beyond. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum is embedded into all of our preschool programs.

We are proud to have earned a 4-star rating from Parent Aware.

To receive a 4-star rating, schools must prove they are excelling in the use of best practices in preparing children for kindergarten by obtaining strong professional development training; building strong, caring relationships with each child; adopting the latest approaches in children’s learning; focusing on children’s health and safety; and committing to activities and routines that best support children’s learning and growing.
