Hopkins Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) Our trusted Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program offers affordable, high quality classes that support you and your young children. A typical class meets once a week and includes: • Parent-Child Activity. Time for you and your child to enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. You’ll take home new ideas for things you can do together. • Parent Discussion. You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences, and information about child development and parenting techniques. • Children’s Activity Time. While you are in Parent Discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children will practice social skills and enjoy music, art, stories, and physical activities. • And there’s more — join us for Special Topics workshops and fun family events (pages 7-12), and many other exciting activities (back cover)! Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for participants. • Our mission. The mission of Early Childhood Family Education is to strengthen families and support the ability of all parents in providing the best possible environment for healthy growth and development of their children. • Our staff. Our experienced ECFE teaching staff is dedicated to parents and children. Teachers hold a degree and state license in Parent Education, Early Childhood Education, or both. • Questions about classes or programs? We are happy to help! Please call Harley Hopkins at 952-988-5000, or email Angela Sandok at Angela.Sandok@HopkinsSchools.org. We have classes for you and your child, newborn to five years old. Families are welcome to enroll in classes at any time, even after the class has begun, if space is available. We look forward to being a trusted resource for learning, connections, and support for your family. *Note: the word “parent” in this publication refers to adult caregivers responsible for the child.

ECFE Overview Early Childhood Family Education

How do I choose the right ECFE class? With so many options, there are classes to fit your needs! Aside from our family events and special topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week. There are day and evening options, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-11. To determine class fee, see the fee scale on page 5 (for Parent/Infant classes) and page 13 (for all other classes). If you have further questions, please call Sonya Everhart at 952-988-5002. At Hopkins, families are always welcome! Registration remains open for classes that have already started (if space is available). Please contact us for a prorated fee if you’d like to join a class that has already begun. Non-separating classes: You and your child stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class, engaging with them in enriching learning and play activities. A licensed parent educator will lead parent conversations on important topics such as child growth and development, transitioning to parenthood, and how children learn and play. Your child has a chance to play during this supportive group discussion. Gradual-separating classes: In the beginning of gradual-separating classes, you and your child explore activities together for about 30 minutes. Parents will move to a separate room gradually as the class progresses. Separate parent meetings begin with short meeting times and are gradually lengthened. Separating classes: You and your child explore activities together for about 30 minutes. This provides an opportunity to learn new ideas, games, songs, and activities that can be used at home. Then, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for conversations related to child development and parenting. Parents share ideas and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge, new connections, and support. Meanwhile, your child will participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided enriching early learning experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. A great preparation for preschool! Sibling care is available, if needed, for most classes. Siblings from six months through kindergarten are eligible. Babies who are not yet crawling are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Immunization information. For ECFE classes 6 weeks or more in length, updated immunization records for your child are due before you and your child participate in the ECFE class. In order to attend ECFE classes, parents must show that they’re in compliance with Minnesota School Immunization Law requirements. Please note: ECFE classes or events shorter than 6 weeks do not require immunization information. See page 15 for more details about immunizations. Parents/guardians may choose to decline immunizations for their children by filing a legal exemption with the school. Copies of the Immunization Record, with directions for filing an exemption, are available in the office at Harley Hopkins Family Center, 125 Monroe Ave. S, Hopkins, MN. See what we’re all about! You & Your 3- to 5-Year-Old How can I help her be a great big sister? How do I set limits — and stick to them? What do we need to do to get ready for school? How can I help her navigate tricky friend situations? It is so exciting to see your child explore his growing independence! In these once-a-week ECFE classes, you will have time with your child during the first portion of class. Then, you and your child will separate into different classrooms. Spotlight on our early childhood staff Meet Shannon Rader, ECFE teacher & parent educator Shannon has been a long-time supporter of Hopkins Schools, where her mother, Karen, worked as an ECFE parent educator for 20 years. She began her own Hopkins journey in 2000, working as an early childhood educator in ECFE. In 2013, Shannon received her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Educational Policy and Administration and moved on to work in administrative positions in other early childhood programs. While she enjoyed these roles, she missed interacting daily with young families and planning creative, educational activities. She has returned to Hopkins as an ECFE teacher to pursue her love of working directly with young children and their families. Shannon resides in Plymouth with her husband and their two cats. She loves to travel and read, and often visits upstate New York to spend time with her brother, sister-in-law, and their two children.
