Hopkins Community Education: Early Childhood Programs

Welcome to Hopkins Early Childhood Programs Planning special time for you and your child is easier with Hopkins ECFE! We offer a weekly opportunity for your child to learn through play — and you get to focus on sharing your support, strategies and suggestions with others in your community who are equally invested in this journey of parenting. Our licensed parent educators facilitate discussions that dive deep into the questions you have now, such as: development, positive approaches to discipline, nutrition, and that ever elusive sleep! Hopkins ECFE is a place where family is valued. Our school district understands the importance of bringing parents together to create a strong support for the early childhood years. By building friendships and strong community now, our children will flourish in a school system that offers familiarity and builds on relationship. The early childhood families in our district create the school community of our future. Hopkins belongs to you, and you belong in Hopkins. See you in class! ECFE Overview

Early Childhood Family Education

How do I choose the right ECFE class? With so many options, there is a class to fit your needs. Aside from our family events and special topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week for 3 to 14 weeks. There are day and evening options, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-9. To determine class fee, see the fee scale on page 11. If you have further questions, please call parent educator Kathryn Moore at 952-988-5046. At Hopkins, families are always welcome! Registration remains open for classes that have already started (if space is available). Please contact us for a prorated fee if you’d like to join a class that has already begun. About non-separating classes: You and your child stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class, engaging with them in enriching learning and play activities. A licensed parent educator will lead parent conversations on important topics such as child growth and development, transitioning to parenthood, and how children learn and play. Your child has a chance to play during this supportive group discussion. About gradual-separating classes: In the beginning of gradual-separating classes, you and your child meet in the same room. Parents will move to a separate room gradually as the class progresses. Separate parent meetings begin with short meeting times and are gradually lengthened. About separating classes: You and your child explore activities together for about 30 minutes. This provides an opportunity to learn new ideas, games, songs, and activities that can be used at home. Then, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for conversations related to child development and parenting. Parents share ideas, information, and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge, new connections, and support. Meanwhile, your child will participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided enriching, early learning experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Sibling Care is available, if needed, for most classes. Siblings from six months through kindergarten are eligible. Babies who are not yet crawling are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Sign up for it on your registration form, page 12. Immunization Law. All students in the state of Minnesota must have immunizations up-to-date and schools must have a child’s immunization record when the child starts school. See what we’re all about! Spotlight on our early childhood staff Meet Genevieve Roberts, ECFE Sibling Care Supervisor Genevieve has lived in the Hopkins School District with her husband and three children for 24 years. Born and raised in the Philippines, Genevieve immigrated to the United States in 1990. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in nursing and worked as an RN until her kids were born. As a parent whose children have gone through Hopkins ECFE and Kaleidoscope Preschool programs, Genevieve has first-hand experience on how early childhood programs have enriched her family life. She believes in the importance of providing a safe learning environment for children where they can explore and engage their senses and creativity through developmentally appropriate play, art, and songs.

You & Your 3-5 Year Old How can I help him be a great big brother? How do I set limits — and stick to them? What do we need to do to get ready for school? How can I help her navigate tricky friend situations? It is so exciting to see your child explore his growing independence! In these once-a-week ECFE classes, you will have time with your child during the first portion of class. Then, you and your child will separate into different classrooms. Her preschool classroom gives her opportunities with social skills, reading, art, stories, science, and more. Your child will discover rich and varied learning stations that engage him while developing school-readiness skills. Meanwhile, parents have the opportunity to develop strong connections with other parents. You’ll learn strategies to support your child’s readiness for kindergarten, and the licensed parent educator will lead discussions on your hot topics, such as sibling rivalry, healthy communication, setting limits, and more.

Fee Information Affordable Classes We know rising costs are a concern. We understand, and we’ve kept costs low. ECFE classes operate on a sliding fee scale, so you pay what you can afford — no one is turned away for inability to pay. There is no better investment than your child!

Sliding Fees Fees are determined according to a sliding fee scale. Locate your gross yearly family income on the scale, then locate the schedule of the class. Your fee is listed at the intersection on the graph. Please enter that fee on the registration form. The sibling care fee is half the amount paid for the class, per child. No family will be turned away because of inability to pay. Please call 952-988-5000 to discuss fee options for your family.

In order to attend ECFE classes, parents must show that they’re in compliance with Minnesota School Immunization Law requirements. Please note: ECFE classes or events shorter than 6 weeks do not require immunization information. There are two ways you can submit your child’s immunization record: 1) Ask your child’s physician for a copy of the current immunization record: Fax it to 952-988-5349, attn: ECFE 2) Drop it off at Harley Hopkins Family Center, 125 Monroe Ave S, Hopkins Parents/guardians may choose to decline immunizations for their children by filing a legal exemption with the school. Copies of the Immunization Record, with directions for filing an exemption, are available in the office at Harley Hopkins Family Center.

What they explore depends on the materials, experiences, and support we provide them. All Hopkins preschool programs incorporate STEM curriculum. The STEM for Preschool project provides our preschool classrooms with the tools and knowledge necessary to assist children in an elevated beginning exploration and understanding of STEM concepts. This will give preschoolers STEM base knowledge, ready to be expanded upon, as they move into deeper STEM concepts through the Hopkins Public Schools curriculum.
