2 | Hopkins Community Education

From the Coordinator Fall! It’s here — and for most of us, regardless of age or stage in life, we feel the pulse of the back-to-school time and look forward to what the year will bring. We live in a unique and sometimes tumultuous time never knowing what will come next. The daily news is enough to provoke exhaustion. Stories of hardship, difficulty, political strife, and natural disaster show up at every turn throughout our days. Many of us are actively seeking respite from the overload of challenging news and anxietyridden times. We need our community — the group of supportive people who hold us up, bolster our confidence, share our joys and sorrows, and make life sweet. Hopkins Community Education is constantly striving to be that place. While offering classes and activities is a large part of community education, creating community and building opportunities to cultivate relationships is even more important. That element of engagement is woven into every one of our opportunities with intention. As Hopkins Public Schools moves from Great to World Class, we want the Hopkins community to feel emboldened to move our neighborhoods in that same direction. We need the respite and support of a strong community and solid relationships in order to see that happen. Join us in Hopkins Community Education this fall. Our new catalog offers nearly 300 opportunities for adults to learn a skill, meet a new friend, build relationships, and find refuge from the daily grind and challenges of our times — all in the name of a world class community.

Happy Fall!

Andrea Sjogren, Adult Program Coordinator

World-Class Community, continued from back cover page day. Thank you, Katie! Our community is always changing and renewing itself and you help make that happen every day. This co-creation of a beautiful, thriving community is all around us in Hopkins. Our neighborhoods can indeed raise a child, provide security, sustain our health, secure our incomes, and care for our most vulnerable. Each of these — and more — are evident in this community every day. And yet, even though the abundance is clear, our community will always continue to grow and change in ways that offer fresh starts and new beginnings. Finding your place in creating community Building community competence and co-creating an abundant community depends on new initiatives that increase our individual and collective connections and utilize our social capital. How will you embrace this time of new beginnings and find your place in co-creating community? Will you join the Schools and Community in Partnership (SCIP) group? Become a member of the Community Education Advisory Council? Run for School Board? Join the PTO? Be elected to public office? Be a neighborhood champion? Join a non-profit board? Will you take a class, volunteer, meet your neighbor, visit a community resource, create public art, clean up a park? These groups and activities are intentional ways to build connections and invest in abundance for our Hopkins school community

and our neighborhoods. If you would like to join us on one or more of these opportunities for connection, please call us at Hopkins Community Education at 952-988-4070, send us a note at Community.Education@HopkinsSchools.org, or even better, stop in and chat with us in the Community Education office at Eisenhower Community Center in Hopkins. A brilliant future for Hopkins Schools As our new Community Education Director Alex Fisher said most recently, “It is an exciting time for Hopkins. Our district recently launched a new, bold, and innovative vision that includes multiple voices and perspectives, to deepen the learning experience and connection for all. We are creating environments of equity and excellence throughout the community where students, families, and all residents feel welcome and respected. Our hope is that every single family can find their place and participate in brilliant programming that shares our community’s values and perspectives.” We are the architects of the future we want to live in and the communities we call home. This future is possible because of the ever-present abundance that we are all able to tap into and the new and always emerging community connections, relationships, and opportunities that are present in and through Community Education each day. You are the reason we are here. You belong in Hopkins!
