Chicken-Hearted Fox

Grades 1-6 Drama Kids With Drama Kids elementary students will present an original play! Life on the farm is a lot of work, and a lot of fun, until a family of chicken-craving foxes attempts to break into the Giles’ barnyard. The Giles family and barnyard animals must work together to keep those sneaky foxes out of their barnyard! Will they stop the foxes in time to save the chickens? No auditions, everyone performs!

Grades 4-8 Abamath Join FIRST® LEGO® League and explore competitive robotics! Participate in team-based, hands-on learning that provides challenging and exciting opportunities. Ignite innovation, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and get excited about science and technology. Practices will be two hours long beginning in October. The season will end in December with a possible tournament. Parents are encouraged to join, but Abamath will provide the robot, coach, scheduling, and coordination for the team. Legos Mania: Laws of Motion

Grades K-5 Bricks 4 Kidz Experience an exciting introduction to physics including the Laws of Motion made famous by Sir Isaac Newton, designed to build a foundation for understanding more advanced concepts. During this unit, launch paper footballs at targets with the catapult model; give your mini-figures a ride on a motorized see-saw and swing-o-rama rides; and practice telling time as you build a clock model. Test some of the laws of motion with models that illustrate the concepts of inertia, force, mass, acceleration, and the observation that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Lego Movie Maker

Grades 1-5 Computer Explorers Working in teams, explore the exciting world of digital animation and photography. Cinematographers/photographers will create stories and unique projects using our special computer graphic and editing software. Make a stop-motion animation movie from beginning to end: storyboarding, creating backgrounds, making props, filming the movie, downloading it to a computer, and adding special effects and transitions. Insects: Masters of the Planet

Grades 1-6 Three Rivers Park District There are more insects on the planet than any other kind of animal! Find out what all insects have in common, and learn about some amazingly cool adaptations insects have that have made them the most successful creature on the planet. Using nets, jars, and magnifiers, we will explore prairie and pond habitats in search of common and uncommon insects. Then, we will bring some creatures to the nature center to look at them super-sized using a magnifying scope-cam. Can a turtle leave its shell? Observe live animals from the Lowry Nature Center, explore similarities and differences between reptiles and amphibians, and learn all about their amazing adaptations! Watch how these creatures move, feel their various skin types, and examine their body shapes. Discover what they eat, and how they protect themselves from predators. Learn what reptiles and amphibians are doing to prepare for the coming winter, and why you don’t see snakes in the snow. Raptors: Predators of the Sky

Grades 6-9 Three Rivers Park District Explore the world of raptors in depth and up close! On October 4, owls will be our focus. Discover their amazing nocturnal hunting adaptations, and meet a live owl to observe these qualities. Dissect owl pellets to explore what owls eat, and how they digest their food. On October 11, hawks and falcons will be featured. Examine their day-time hunting adaptations, and how they differ from nocturnal birds. Meet and observe a live falcon, and learn about how Lowry Nature Center staff care for captive raptors. Enjoy a picnic lunch at the center each day. Explore the chemistry of everyday life through spectacular hands-on activities with real lab equipment.

Learn how to work in a lab, operate lab equipment, tell the difference between acids and bases, identify chemical reactions, observe chemistry that happens in the blink of an eye, and bond molecules together in ooey-gooey slime. Explore the micro-world of molecular chemistry, and delve into the secrets of hydrogen bonding. At the end of each class, you’ll add to your own lab by taking home a graduated cylinder, pH paper, action flask, set of atomic coins, Professor Beakerdude, and a batch of Mad Science slime created by you! Grades 2-6 Computer Explorers Image, create, and share by using the new version of the Scratch programming environment. Create an interactive 2D video game using your favorite characters. We’ve scoured the Scratch website and assembled a collection of the most popular game sprites. Saturday afternoons! Lifeguards are on duty during all family swim hours. Swimmers must furnish their own suits and towels. DestinationImagination

Building Tomorrow’s Leaders: One Challenge at a Time Destination ImagiNation is an innovative organization that teaches life skills and expands imagination through teamwork-based problem solving. Teams create solutions to “Team Challenges” by creating a short skit. Kids gain more than just basic knowledge and skills - they learn to unleash imaginations and take unique approaches to problem solving.

Any grade level can participate from kindergarten to grade 12.

Teams of 5-7 students are formed by grade level/school each fall.

The program runs November through March. Teams are based on enrollment, and set their own meeting times and frequency. A volunteer Team Manager is needed for each team — all training and ongoing support is provided. If you become a Team Manager, your child will receive a discount refund on registration.

Chinese Martial Arts

Grades 3-6 David Yam Explore the world of ancient Chinese Martial Arts and discover how to preserve your strength as you learn self-defense, self-discipline, and teamwork.

Master basic stances, blocks, and kicks that serve as a training foundation. In addition, work with props such as sword, fan, and staff. Appropriate selfdefense techniques will be discussed. Even if you have already practiced martial arts, this can be an added boost for your training. Chinese Speaking I and II

Grades 1-2 and 3-4 Nancy Tang Enhance and develop Chinese speaking skills in standard Mandarin including Chinese poem recitation, program announcement, and master of ceremony (emcee). This class will provide opportunities for students in grades 1-2 and 3-4 to speak in public settings and serve as an emcee for the Chinese New Year Celebration on February 26, 2015. Grades 5-6 Zhining Chin Discover the exciting world of television journalism including interviewing and anchor roles in this afterschool Chinese cultural class for 5th and 6th grade students. In this hands-on class, students will also develop technological skills such as videotaping, editing scripts, and video clips, while integrating Chinese language skills including speaking, listening, and writing into television scenarios. Grades 1-3 and 4-6 Huaru Zhang, CAAM CDT Learn the basic forms of Chinese dance, including traditional Chinese folk dances with props such as fans, ribbons, and handkerchiefs, that are completely different from ballet and other western dance styles. Explore dances representing a variety of Chinese cultural features from other nationalities inside China such as Yi, Dai, Miao, and Mongolia.

Increase flexibility and learn basic tumbling in this class that prepares students to dance at the New Year’s celebration on February 26, 2015. Includes all sessions up to the Chinese New Year celebration!
