YOUR QUESTIONS OUR ANSWERS Q
My husband has been fighting off the flu/cold virus for a few weeks now. He has been to the GP who has checked him out and there is no benefit to taking antibiotics just plenty of rest. He tends to get cold’s a couple of times a year. Any suggestions on natural products he could take to help?
It is obvious that your husband’s immune system could do with some support. The rest and plenty of fluids which could include herbal teas such as SALUS THYME would certainly be a good idea. Some of the natural remedies which help to improve and support a low immune system include SAMBUCOL EXTRA DEFENCE..a blend of black elderberries, zinc and vitamin C which acts as a antiinflammatory and anti-bacterial and helps to fight off infection. Also, ensure he tops up on his gut bacteria which will also help to improve his immune system with a good quality probiotic such as QUEST MEGA 8 or SOLO ACIDOPHILLUS. He could also take a garlic supplement while he is fighting off these symptoms. It is important that he takes steps during the year to strengthen his immune system which will help protect him in the future.

I feel like I am constantly stressed and try to look after myself as best I can but would welcome any tips you could give me that may help.
The good news is that certain lifestyle factors can considerably minimise stress. A healthy balanced diet and plenty of exercise are among the most important factors. Good quality sleep is also key and essential for energy balance. Always ensure your blood tests are up to date and if needed consider taking a multivitamin and mineral supplement which contains B vitamins and magnesium such as VIRIDIAN, which are needed to support adrenal function. Herbs known as adaptogens are reputed to have beneficial effects on adrenal function. One of the better known is RHODIOLA. This herb may have a positive effect for those experiencing stress related fatigue. ASHWAGANDA is another adaptogenic herb and can be very supportive during times of stress. It may help to improve tolerance levels whilst also helping to increase energy. The information contained in this column is not a substitute for medical advice and you should always consult with your GP.
ASK ALEXANDER, NATURAL BEAUTY EXPERT
What chemical nasties should we look out for in mainstream hand soap products? There’s a long list of ingredients that can be potentially harmful to our health, below are some of the main offenders: • Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS) - a known irritant to the skin and eyes, this chemical is commonly used in soaps as a foaming agent. It also increase the absorption of other (potentially harmful) chemicals in to the skin and impairs the skin’s ability to retain moisture. It can also mutate genetic material. • Fragrance (Parfum) - not all synthetic fragrance compounds are bad, but some are! Some can lead to dryness of skin and irritation. Unfortunately, the term “fragrance” is often masking a group of chemicals known as phthalates, which have been linked to serious reproductive problems. • Triethanolamine, Diethanolamine, Monoethanolamine (TEA, DEA, MEA) - according to the EWG this is one of the most toxic groups of ingredients found in soap. An irritant to lungs and eyes, this chemical can cause severe and painful inflammation. • Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) and Sodium PCA - these two chemicals are not clean, they can contain harmful impurities and both have been linked to cancer. PEG-6 has been linked to breast cancer in particular. • Triclosan - an antibacterial agent that is thought to have been responsible for bacterial mutations that have led to increased resistance to antibiotics. What sets JASON Natural Care Liquid Soaps apart from other bath and shower products? BE EXAM READY
We all know how important study and preparation is coming up to exam time. While most students put in the hours with books, grinds and after school study, it is just as important to give as much thought to your mental and physical wellbeing. Exam stress can play havoc with your body and weaken your immune system. The last thing you need is to get sick during or coming up to exam time. Don’t let all of your hard work fall victim to poor health and low energy!! Good nutrition is essential to help get your mind and body in shape for the big exams. For some handy tips to help with exam stress, read on! • Start off your day with a good breakfast that includes powerpacked porridge, eggs or a smoothie • Keep hydrated (essential for focusing and concentration) • Keep to a routine and take regular breaks while studying • Learn to recognise when you are stressing; a break or a chat with someone who knows the pressure you are under will get things into perspective • Stay away from caffeine and sugary drinks as they only put extra pressure on the adrenals (stress glands) • Exercise! Even going for a quick walk will clear the head and boost the brain
• Try to get enough sleep (at least 8 hours). Sleep helps your brain to assimilate new knowledge into your long-term memory so that you can recall it when it comes to exam day Try and stick to these tips as much as possible. In addition, there are some excellent supplements in store which may help to keep you on track. Some of these include... • B-Complex: Helps to support the central nervous system and raises your stress tolerance level and coping ability. It also helps to keep your mood balanced! Some of our favourite brands include Viridian or Solo • Rhodiola: A wonderful herb for energy, mental focus and dealing with stress • Essential Fatty Acids: (fish or seed oil in capsule or liquid form): Essential to help with focus, concentration and memory • Magnesium: An important mineral that can help support normal energy levels and functioning of the central nervous system. Magnesium aids in calming the nerves and relaxing the muscles, which in turn promotes restful sleep • Balance for Nerves: A specific formula to help with stress, energy and promote general well being during exam time Hopefully you’ll find this advice beneficial. However, the best advice of all is START NOW. Don’t wait until just before exam time... ( a bit like the studying!! ) Until next time, stay healthy, Deirdre
PAT DIVILLY REVEALS HIS TOP THREE FITNESS TIPS WHEN YOU REACH THE BIG FOUR-OH. Here are my top three tips for those looking to improve health and wellbeing specifically for those over the age of 40. I’m focused on the ‘big dominoes’; the three changes that can have the biggest impact on how you look, feel, move and think. FIGURE OUT WHY - What is your motivation to train? I think it’s important to tie your training goal to as many parts of life as you can. For example, my preferred method of training 10 years ago was weight lifting because I wanted to be strong for sport and look a certain way. Now it’s hiking or martial arts which are both social, give me great head space, keep me engaged and interested and suit a lifestyle and work load which entails a lot of travel. Your motivations to train will change throughout your life, so think about how can you can make your training tick as many boxes as possible. Are you looking for weight loss, muscle gain, lower cholesterol,

improved mobility, injury prevention, longevity, greater energy, a social outlet, a means of managing your mental health, or a form of exercise that stimulates you mentally? Try to find the form of exercise that suits your age/health, lifestyle and goals, both physically and mentally. FOCUS ON NUTRITION - Nutrition accounts for the biggest percentage of how you look, feel, move and think. To be at your best you’ve got to put a big focus on nutrition. At its most basic, look to get some great quality proteins from meats and fish, a wide array of vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables and your essential fatty acids from nuts, seeds and oils. Fats might be the most misunderstood and overlooked aspect of nutrition. I’m a big fan of Udo’s Oil as a food supplement. It’s got the perfect ratio of essential fatty acids Omega 3, 6 and 9, plus it’s organic. I love to take it off the spoon or add it to yogurts, smoothies, salads and soups.
best things we can do for improved energy throughout the day is to get up and go to bed at the same time throughout the week. Anyone struggling with sleep should look to cut back on caffeine and turn off electronics and bright screens at least an hour before bed. Udo’s Oil is available from your local Horans Health Store.
MANAGE YOUR SLEEP - We often consider the benefits of exercise and nutrition but neglect our sleep. To optimise our hormones for true health and vitality, good quality sleep is essential. As we get older one of the 3
TESTING TIMES Don’t let stress rule your life - take control with this advice from Claire Whitty. Do you suffer with stress? Is it affecting your sleep? Some people don’t even realise that they’re stressed – it often takes someone else to point it out to them. I remember screaming at my husband once when he accused me of being stressed. I screamed at him, “I am NOT stressed!” The thing is, I was stressed but I didn’t realise it. And, naturally, once I accepted it, I could do something about it.
deal with the stress, and some that can help you get some quality sleep.
So why was it so hard to recognise? I didn’t understand it – I was busy burning the candle at both ends, tired, in a new job, studying and learning new things, and was cross. I wasn’t pulling my hair out or screaming but I must have been going around with a face of vengeance on me. Basically stress happens any time your adrenalin is pumping, like sitting in traffic behind a slow car, waiting for news of medical issue or studying for exams. In fact, exam or project deadlines can cause a huge amount of pressure. There are, of course, good types of stress. These can include the excitement of getting married, going on a holiday, waiting for the arrival of a new baby, or starting a new job. However, stress is not good when it’s on-going because it can disrupt your sleep. It may also play havoc with the digestive system, causing symptoms that include bloating, wind, diarrhoea, and pain. It affects your mood too. This time of year I meet lots of students who are stressed about exams, projects and deadlines, and who cannot sleep. I also see parents of students who are stressed. There are some fantastic supplements to help you
Irish Botanica Peace & Calm is amazing, it contains valerian, one of my favourite herbs. Peace & Calm is a traditional herbal medicinal product used for the temporary relief of symptoms of mild stress and to aid sleep. You will be surprised how calm you feel. It also contains liquorice for adrenal support and herbs to support your digestion, which is often affected by stress. Adults should take 5ml, three times a day for mild mental stress, or 30ml 30 minutes before bed for a peaceful night’s sleep. Another go-to favourite of mine is Melissa Dream, it contains magnesium, l-theanine, lemon balm, and B vitamins. It’s a brilliant combination to help you relax, reduce anxiety, switch off unwanted thoughts, and feel calm. Plus, it will help you feel more focused the next day. Don’t let stress rule your life. Try a natural solution today and make time to eat a healthy balanced diet, reduce caffeine intake and exercise daily. You should always consult your doctor if you’re on medication. New Nordic Melissa Dream is available from your local Horans Health Store.

Nature, beauty and healing for all the family Amber Jewellery from Amber SOS will not only look good but Amber is long renowned as a natural aid for better health. It is known to ease the discomfort of chronic pain conditions and injury. It can act as a natural anti-inflammatory and can aid better sleep. Each piece is unique, a gift from nature. We are delighted to have our amber jewellery for adults and children stocked in all Horan Healthstores.
THE AMBER SOS STORY
Like many people, we first heard about Amber when our oldest daughter was teething. So we are a family inspired and family run Irish business. We share the wonder of amber with so many parents and the feedback is phenomenal and heart-warming. Since 2005, we have built an enviable reputation as Ireland’s leading Amber supplier. We added a range of Amber for Adults and again heard from so many people about how amber has helped ease many chronic pain conditions, reduced the need for tablets and helped sleep. The body feels a definite boost when wearing amber.
WHAT IS AMBER?
Amber is a natural gem. Amber is the fossilised resin that once flowed from the trunks of long extinct trees. The trees released the resin to protect them from parasitic and insect attack and to heal damage to the tree. Is has evolved over 40 million years to become the warm organic gem that we know today and still gives this therapeutic soothing affect when worn against the skin. Amber has been made into jewellery and worn as an adornment and panacea since Roman times. Each piece of amber is unique and makes striking natural jewellery. Continue your journey into the fascinating world of Amber by visiting our website www.ambersos.com
WHAT CAN AMBER DO?
Amber is long renowned for its curative nature. When worn against the skin, it is known to help many chronic pain conditions including teething pain, migraine, throat and ear pain, arthritis, rheumatism. It is also recommended to ease pain and inflammation from broken bones and muscular injuries. It can aid restful sleep and can promote self-healing.
HOW TO USE AMBER
The key to having amber help is to wear it against the skin all the time. It must be left on and given a chance to get going. We recommend wearing it for a least 3 -4 weeks. For us, amber is as precious as diamonds. Each piece is unique, beautiful, a connection with nature and history and a link to another world. We travel regularly to the Baltic where we personally hand pick the finest amber gems. We choose only from reputable craftsmen, whose experience in working with amber spans generations. Our goal is to help you find the perfect piece of amber to suit your needs in a knowledgeable and efficient and friendly manner. If you cannot find the answer to a query on our website, we are happy to take your call at any time. We are committed to providing the best products and advice available, delivered with the highest levels of customer service and attention to detail. We are delighted to have so many return customers who share amber with their family and friends. Try it and experience for yourself the wonder of Amber!
CHANGE YOUR EATING HABITS FOR GOOD BY OLIVER MC CABE Skipping meals rarely helps with weight loss. Most people simply make up for a skipped Oliver McCabe meal by eating more at other meals. Breakfast is the most frequently skipped meal— people usually say that’s because they’re too busy in the morning, or they’re just not hungry. A simple remedy is to have something quick and light but satisfying—such as some oat porridge, natural yoghurt with some fruit and mixed seeds, or a hard-boiled egg and a piece of fruit. Meal plans are a huge help in keeping you on track because once you’ve got a plan in mind, you’re a bit more committed. Eating quickly, eating when distracted or stressed, or skipping meals and getting overly hungry—can all lead to over-eating. However the amount you eat is of course determined by the amount of food that’s on your plate, so that’s where portion control really begins. When you eat at home, serve yourself in the kitchen, it’s easier to resist second helpings that way. When you eat quickly, it’s also easy to eat too much. Sitting down at a table and taking smaller bites and chewing your food will help.
Read nutrition labels carefully for sugar content (4g = 1 teaspoon) and visit your local independent health food store to buy unsweetened versions of products such as cereals and yoghurts; you can sweeten them with fresh fruit and spices like cinnamon. Deep-fried foods, fatty meats, snack foods, sauces, dressings, and many desserts can dump huge amounts of fat and calories into your system. Use lean cuts of meat, eat more fish and poultry, and experiment with recipes to find other ways to prepare foods other than frying. When you don’t take in enough water, it can make you tired and irritable, and it can affect your exercise performance, too. Keeping a water bottle nearby will encourage you to drink. Fruit and veg do require some preparation. This is where your freezer can be your best friend—loose pre-cut fruits are easy to add to protein smoothies, yoghurt or porridge, and frozen precut vegetables can be tossed into soups, stews, curries and stir-fries.
you feel better. Start by keeping a diary and make note of what triggers your stress eating—that way you can anticipate when it’s likely to happen. Be a mindful eater rather than a mindless eater. Snacking, done right, can help you control your overall calorie intake for the day by helping to keep your hunger in check. Snack on raw pre-cut fresh fruit and vegetables. Also visit your local independent health food store to see the snack ranges on offer and read your food labels, or ask for advice before buying. Learn your way around the nutrition facts panel, and know that all the nutrition information that’s given is for a single serving—not the entire package.
Stress eating usually has nothing to do with hunger and, most of the time; it doesn’t really make 5

Seeds are a storehouse of energy and nutrients, containing everything that is needed for the early stages of a plant’s growth. When a seed starts to sprout, nutrients (vitamins, minerals and enzymes) contained in it become available in a living form.Sprouts can be eaten raw or cooked. HEALTHY DIGESTION Your overall health depends on the healthy functioning of your digestive system and many people complain about gut problems including Marilyn Glenville indigestion, heartburn, bloating, flatulence and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is the most common problem associated with the digestive system. It can affect up to 20% of people, with women most commonly affected and it ranks as high as the common cold for people needing days off work to cope with it.
DIGESTIVE TIPS CHEW WELL The first part of digestion happens in your mouth, so to have a healthy digestion it is really important to chew well. Chewing also signals the other parts of your digestive system to get ready to receive food.
DON’T EAT ON THE RUN Try not to eat on the run or when stressed. When your body thinks it is under stress, the
energy necessary for digestion is diverted elsewhere so your body can concentrate on saving your life. If you are eating on the run then you won’t digest the food properly and you’ll feel bloated and uncomfortable.
HELPFUL NUTRIENTS: • Peppermint oil is one of the most effective treatments for IBS, helping to eliminate or reduce spasms, bloating, trapped wind, constipation and diarrhoea. • Magnesium helps to relax muscles in the bowel to prevent cramping and spasm. It is particularly helpful when the main symptom is constipation rather than diarrhoea.
IBS especially when combined with slippery elm. • Turmeric has significant anti-inflammatory effects and has been shown to help two out of three people with IBS. • Chamomile can reduce spasms and control ‘nervous’ reactions in the gut making it less sensitive to food and other triggers. • Fennel relieves flatulence as well as soothing the digestive tract and reducing cramps and spasms. There is a good combination of these herbs I use in my clinics by NHP called IB Support. For information on how to get rid of digestive symptoms see book ‘Natural Solutions to IBS’.
• Ginger relaxes and soothes the intestinal tract to help prevent indigestion, gas and bloating as it. It is also known to reduce anxiety which can worsen IBS symptoms. • Marshmallow and Slippery Elm contain mucilage which forms a protective coating over an irritated and inflamed intestinal lining. • Liquorice has an antispasmodic effect so lessening abdominal cramps. Liquorice has been shown to help with

Omega-3, is a vital part of exam preparation. Our bodies can’t produce omega-3, so we need to get it through our diet. Omega-3, the main beneficial fatty acid in fish oil, has been shown to: Marketing Director
• Reduce anxiety during exams by 20% • Improve memory and cognitive ability • Improved concentration – one study showed increased concentration within 2 hours of taking omega-3 proving that its never too late to start taking your omega-3s. • Helps improve learning and balance moods • Aids sleep which results in greater performance during the day. • Strengthens the immune system so that you don’t get run down. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid is brain food. DHA helps to improve learning, mood, memory and concentration. Studies show that you need 250mg DHA daily to support brain health. Eating oily fish twice a week – such as salmon or sardines, provides a healthy dose of omega-3 EPA/DHA. If you don’t eat fish, it is important that you take a high quality fish oil supplement such as Eskimo Brain 3.6.9, which combines Eskimo-3 fish oil, high in DHA, with plant oils omega-6 and omega-9 along with brain friendly Co-Q10 and vitamin D3. Containing a powerhouse of nutrition, your brain power will surge in no time. Claire Breen in Galway takes Eskimo Brain 3.6.9 daily - “I have used Eskimo-3 fish oils over the past few years and have found them unbelievably beneficial. Within 1-2 days I felt sharper and more focused. After a few weeks, my skin was smooth and clear, which I also attribute to the product. It is a natural, affordable and an amazing product, which I have recommended to friends.” Claire Breen, Galway
CHOOSE LOW GI FOODS Low GI or GL carbohydrates are mainly non-starchy vegetables (root vegetables are considered starchy vegetables), pulses, and lentils, fresh fruit. Foods with a low GI/GL value release their energy slower, avoiding a ‘sharp’ rise in blood sugar levels. This helps to keep your energy steady throughout the day. Choose: Apples, Berries, Buckwheat, Cherries, hummus, Cinnamon Green tea, Lentils & pulses, Oat bran and flakes, Oatcakes, Pears, Plums, brown bread, cashew nuts, almonds and grapefruit.
LOAD UP ON B VITAMINS The B vitamins are well known for aiding energy, focus and alertness. While B vitamins are present in many foods we eat, a higher quantity is often required during stressful times. Try Terranova B Complex which contains B vitamins plus ginseng and rhodiola plus many other 8
useful herbs to help calm your body so you can concentrate on the exams. Protein to prevent energy slumps: Eating protein with each meal helps to keep your energy up and your concentration good throughout the day. Protein is the ultimate fill-meup food - it's more satisfying than carbohydrates or fats and keeps you feeling full for longer and helps keep blood sugar stable and moods stable. Turkey is a brilliant meat to include as its a source of tryptophan - a precursor to serotonin - the feel good hormone. Choose: healthy proteins like turkey, seafood, lean meat, eggs, yogurt, cheese, soy, nuts, or beans into your meals and snacks.
EXERCISE Exercise increases endorphins — such as serotonin — that improve mood and may improve sleep quality, which in turn reduces stress and anxiety. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes, 3 times a week at a minimum. Walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, skating, hiking, aerobic classes are all types of aerobic exercise. Find something you enjoy and just do it! Calm anxiety with Rescue Remedy: During the run up to the exams, calm your body with Rescue Remedy drops. Just a couple of drops will help you to relax, get focused and get much needed calmness that you need to excel during your exams.
LEARN TO RELAX Learning effective anxiety relaxation techniques is an important part of coping with stress and anxiety. Try yoga, pilates or meditation to help relax and reduce anxiety.

LET’S PREP FOR HAY FEVER SEASON Hay fever season is fast approaching, but why does the human body suffer from allergies and hayfever?
Pollinosan tablets and Nasal Spray are licensed for the relief of the symptoms of hayfever and allergic rhinitis. They are both very easy to use either in place of or alongside conventional medication.
The human immune Alison Cullen system is designed to respond to potential enemies, such as bacteria and viruses, knocking them out with ruthless efficiency. In some people, the immune system becomes a little over-anxious and starts attacking benign substances such as plant pollen. This is the allergic reaction known as hayfever. Other allergies are similar responses to other substances, e.g. scent, animal hair, etc. The more stressed we are, the more junk food we eat, the less sleep we get, the more likely our immune systems are to act in a hysterical manner when faced with something quite non-threatening.
Are there any remedies that help sinus issues? Avoid dairy products and cut down on refined sugar, both of which are mucus-forming. Try Sinuforce Nasal Spray, which very swiftly clears the sinuses. For long-standing catarrhal congestion, use Sinuforce Nasal Spray alongside Plantago tincture, which tackles the underlying congestion and strengthens the
mucous membranes in the ear/nose/throat tract. When should people start taking hayfever remedies? It is useful to start working on supporting your immune system by taking Echinacea a month or two before you usually start experiencing symptoms. The last few years have been chaotic in terms of when pollen appears, so this can be difficult. Start taking Pollinosan tablets a couple of weeks before symptoms usually emerge. Use Pollinosan Nasal Spray as and when nasal symptoms begin.
What are the natural alternatives to taking antihistamines for hayfever? Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine. Take a low dose (100mg – 200mg) several times daily to get the most from it. Keep your diet full of fresh fruit and veg too. Nettles also have antihistamine action. Drink nettle tea and / or take Nettle (Urtica) tincture several times daily.
Chia Seeds Chia seeds, native to Mexico and Central America, are the tiny seeds of the Salvia Hispanica plant, a member of the mint family. In addition to being a wonderful source of Omega-3 fatty acids, chia is high in fibre, 21% protein by weight, and is a great source of calcium and iron. Chia may control food cravings and may help regulate blood sugar levels. It also works well as a natural thickener in egg-free baking.

The Sunshine Vitamin For ALL Seasons According to the Irish Osteoporosis Society, 74% of adults and 88% of primary school children have less than half of the recommended daily amount of vitamin D. This fat soluble vitamin is required by the body for the maintenance and development of healthy bones, teeth, and muscle function, and is also needed to promote the absorption of calcium. Macánta High Strength Vitamin D3 capsules offer 2500iu of cholecalciferol, considered the most natural and most active form of Vitamin D. This vegan form of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is what the body naturally produces when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Given the limited amounts of regular sunlight exposure year round here in Ireland, it is almost impossible to maintain your required levels of this vital vitamin, which cannot be met through diet alone. Given that nearly all cells in the immune system depend on Vitamin D to function effectively, and that as we age our bodies become less efficient at absorbing Vitamin D, this supplement could benefit year round as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Available from all Horan’s stores, ask staff for more information on how Macánta D3 could benefit your health.
