Mumbai Mumbai is the vibrant and pulsating capital of Maharashtra and the premier city of western India. The commercial capital, Mumbai has been described as a 'marketplace' and a city of 'striking contrasts. It is a lively city with a character all its own - a major industrial and financial centre with skyscrapers next to stately Victorian buildings, shopping malls and theaters. Mumbai is also the main centre of the Indian film industry, known as Bollywood.

Delhi Delhi, the capital of India, presents a vast panorama of fascinating images. It is a city where forts, tombs and ruins share the skyline with high-rise buildings and stately homes. The wide tree-lined avenues of New Delhi give way to the crowded narrow lanes of Old Delhi - and along with the changes comes a distinctly different culture and lifestyle. The presence of contrasts is a historical

Cochin A long strip of enchanting land tucked away in the south-west corner of India, in Kerala State. Also known as Kochi, Cochin is Kerala's most cosmopoliton city. Built around a saltwater lagoon, Cochin is the main trading centre for spices and seafood in the region. Cochin boasts many natural splendors - mountains and valleys, lush paddy fields and lazy lagoons and beautiful beaches with tall and exotic coconut palms.

Kolkata Kolkata is the largest city in India, indeed one of the largest in the world. Established as a British trading post in the 17th century, the city rapidly grew, acquiring a life and vibrancy of its own. Its glory is still reflected in the buildings of Chowringhee and Clive Street; know as Jawaharlal Nehru Road and Netaji Subhash Road respectively. It is a city which leaves no-one indifferent-fascinating, effervescent, teeming with life, peoples, cultures.

Cities of India

Agra is the city of the Taj Mahal where thousands of visitors come every year to gaze in awe at this marble 'poem' of love. Agra was once the capital of the Moghul emperors and it is their passion for building and aesthetic sense that endowed it with some of the finest buildings in the country.

Chennai Chennai is the centre of the Hindu tradition of Bharata Natyam (classical dancing) the art of temple sculpture also comes from this part of the country, and gives expression to both the devoutness and the artistic skills of the Tamil people. Madras is the home of the ancient Dravidian civilisation, one of the oldest articulate cultures in the world. Friendliness, sincerity and colorfulness of the people can slowly be absorbed while taking a stroll over the sandy stretch of beach known as the Marina, or visiting Fort St. George, built by the British East India Company. So many of the street names reflect the city's long association with other cultures; China Bazaar Road, Armenian Street, Portuguese Church Street for instance.
