LIFESPAN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS by Lauren Daniell dlre@horizonuu.org blog: www.horizonuu.org/dre/ Pinterest: www.pinterest.com/horizonuu/

Opportunities for Teens This Fall at Horizon There are many special classes and opportunities of interest for teens in grades 8-12 at Horizon beginning August 24th. Please email Lauren if you have questions or are interested in registering your child for these courses.

Teens entering 8th grade in the fall (or who have not had OWL) Our Whole Lives: OWL is a comprehensive sexuality education program that provides accurate information about relationships and sexual health while promoting the UU friendly values of respect, compassion, responsibility, diversity, and justice.

Ninth graders Coming of Age: During this important year, ninth graders examine their maturing religious identity and diverse UU heritage. They will write credo statements after carefully considering their beliefs, and will culminate the year in a summer trip to Boston to learn first-hand about their Unitarian Universalist roots.

Grades 10-12 Summer “Mission Trip”: In addition to our usual Sunday morning programming, our senior high students will be given the opportunity to participate in a summer social justice project in 2015. Plans to attend Heifer Ranch in Arkansas or participate in a work week in New Orleans are now in the planning stages. Youth will be needed to help plan the trip and/or organize fundraising events to offset trip costs. A great way for Horizon teens to gain leadership experience and live out their values.

District leadership roles: Did you know there is a group of teens in our North Texas cluster who plan events for other UU teens that any interested youth can join? The group travels to UU Youth rallies in the Austin and Houston areas, and will plan the North Texas rally in mid-March 2015. A fantastic opportunity to meet other UU teens in the region and gain leadership/organizational experience.

Calendar of Events for Children and Youth July 6-12th: Camp U-Bar-U for rising 7-9th graders (www.ubaru.org) July 13-19th: Camp at U-Bar-U for rising 10-12th graders (www.ubaru.org) July 27th: Parenting Seminar with Elaine Commins: Parenting with Love and Logic. 9 am in the Horizon Library August 24th: Fall RE Open House August 31st: Splash Day for water fun

Rising Grades 5-8:

You, the Creator (Portable rm. #8)

How would you design a human? After spending the beginning of the summer examining religion and creation and some creation stories, middle school students will be asked to redesign the Earth and human beings.

ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: NEW CLASSES by JuLane julane@judithlane.com

What We Choose:

Ethics for Unitarian Universalists An Adult Religious Education Class Where does moral authority lie? What is the basis for UU religious ethics? Is there such a thing as absolute and unchanging moral truth? What does it mean to live a life of virtue, to develop a virtuous character? How do we respond when we personally fall short of virtues we hold dear? Do human beings have inherent basic rights we are called to uphold? What do we do when our rights-based morality brings us face to face with rights that are in conflict? How do our relationships with others form a fundamental influence in our ethical decision making?

Page 13

ADULT RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: NEW CLASSES Join us as we explore these and other moral and ethical questions that arise in your daily living. The 8 sessions of What We Choose offer an intentional process of engagement with other seekers in examining ethical concepts, questions and dilemmas. The material covered is designed to deepen and expand knowledge and skills for a process of ethical reflection that is central to living our Unitarian Universalist faith. This class offers the opportunity to examine the core of our lives as Unitarian Universalists and the sessions build on each other so we ask that you commit to attending all 8 sessions beginning Monday, August 4th and continuing to September 29th, with no class being held on Labor Day, September 1st. All materials will be provided with the exception of your personal journal; a 1-inch 3-ring binder would allow space for journal pages as well as insertion of the hand-outs that will provide your reading assign-

ments and preparation for each class. The co-leaders are Peter Hendee and JuLane and we welcome any questions about the class. Please sign up at the Welcome Center in the lobby, or you can email JuLane at julane@judithlane.com. The class is limited to 12 participants. Childcare will be provided for children under 12 by emailing Ms Becky at childcare@horizonuu.org at least 48 hours before the session for which childcare is needed. She will need to know the ages of each child and about any special concerns. Cancellation of arranged childcare must be emailed to Ms. Becky no less than 24 hours before the session.

JUNE SELECTION HORIZON BOOK GROUP Shortlisted for the 2013 Man Booker Prize; Fiction Finalist, 2013 National Book Award

From an interview following the National Book Award nomination: Edan Lapucki: “When I think of your work, I think of your precise, measured and graceful prose, as well as your attention to the everyday and inner lives of your characters. You’re basically the Queen of Realism. (You can’t deny it—there’s a crown on your head!) Do you think of yourself as working in a realist tradition? If so, can you discuss? If not, what tradition—if any—do you see yourself participating in?” Jhumpa Lahiri: “Everyday life and ordinary characters interest me. I believe that the mystery of life lies there. Many of the writers who have guided me over the years—Joyce, Chekhov, Cather, Hardy—depict the world in a way that feels transcendent. On the other hand, writers like Kafka or Borges render surreal situations in ways that are intensely realistic. The thing to remember is that, as three-dimensional as characters may seem, they are made of words, not flesh and blood. In the end all fiction is a dream.” http://www.nationalbook.org/nba2013_f_lahiri_interv.html Why not join the discussion at noon on Tuesday, June 24, in the Horizon library? You are welcome even if you haven’t read the book. Bring a sack lunch, something to drink, and your thoughts and impressions of this highly praised book. (The author’s first book, Interpreter of Maladies, a collection of stories, won the Pulitzer for fiction in 2000.)
