Often what we strive for is not what actually happens. How can we improve the odds that we will lead with our best values inside and outside our congregation? This sermon will explore these issues as they pertain to your next minister. This service will be a followup to the special Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop which will be held on Saturday morning, October 17th. The Beyond Categorical Thinking (BCT) program works with Unitarian Universalist congregations who are in the search process for a new settled minister.

About Rev. Keith Kron... Rev. Keith Kron is the Director of the Transitions Office for the UUA, helping congregations and ministers as they navigate the ministerial search process. He is the former Director of the Office of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Concerns for the Unitarian Unversalist Association. He held that position for over 14 years from 1996-2010. He has visited over 450 UU congregations across the continent, helping them in Welcoming Congregation work, Beyond Categorical Thinking workshops, and public outreach. He also has taught an online class for Starr King School for the Ministry, our UU seminary in Berkeley, on children's literature. He also leads workshops on the enneagram, plays and teaches tennis, and collects children's books in his spare time (He has over 8,500 of them.). He is 54 and currently lives in Providence, RI.

mUUsings Greetings from your interim minister. As the September chaos of coming together settles, the work and focus for the program year is unfolding. This month alone the congregation will host
Authoring Life’s Final Chapter – A workshop addressing family issues and dynamics, emotional and practical support for caregivers, end of life care, required legal documentation and traditional and alternative ceremonies to memorialize the deceased. Great Decisions Forum – A discussion program on world affairs exploring the most critical global issues facing America today. Beyond Categorical Thinking – a workshop designed to promote inclusive thinking and prevent unfair discrimination during the search for a settled minister. Exploring Horizon – Everything you ever wanted to know about Unitarian Universalism and Horizon (Okay, maybe not everything!), designed with those who are new to UUism and Horizon in mind. PASTA Fall Festival – A fun-filled event for everyone, featuring the annual silent and live auctions, entertainment and activities specially designed for the young and young at heart. And behind the scenes, the circle committees and groups are tending to the day-to day tasks that keep the doors open and programs happening. Staff and Circle Coordinators are working on a variety of projects from the mundane to the imaginative – everything from cleaning up the database and online calendar to exploring grant and funding possibilities for new ventures. All of that and more is happening over the next month. A time of action, a time of learning, a time of investigating, a time of sharing. In this harvest time, Horizon has much to celebrate. Board Meeting October 21st Your Board of Trustees is charged to represent the interests of Horizon's Congregation and to regularly monitor progress to fulfill the mission of this vibrant church. The Board recognizes that, in order to do these things effectively, we must have open communication with all of our members so we are informed about both concerns and the things you most appreciate. The Board meets in the church library every third Wednesday, beginning at 7:00 p.m. and normally ending between 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Any interested member of Horizon (or the community at large) is welcome to attend. Each meeting includes a specific opportunity for public comments (which we ask be limited to three minutes in length). You are encouraged to join us at our monthly meetings and/or to talk with us individually to share your thoughts and interests.

I have had several people ask me what ACS was or how to access ACS. This brought me to an idea of having some on site basic training for people that may need some assistance with using the system. I will work on recruiting some volunteers to help with this project. In the meantime, if you want to set up a login, follow the prompts on the website. Keeping our ACS updated is important to stay connected! Think of it as your “digital� Church Directory.

COMMUNITY NEWS AFTER CHURCH LUNCH BUNCH One way to get to know people from Horizon better is to join us after church for lunch. Everyone is welcome (even friends and family joining you after church). The restaurant will change each week. Check the welcome desk each week for the location. We meet most Sundays. Ask for the “Horizon” tables. It may take a few minutes following the service for lunch attendees to arrive but we’re coming!
Second Sunday Potluck: Everyone welcome! Horizon’s potlucks provide an opportunity to get to know others and be with our church community. We appreciate your bringing a bit more than needed for our families, allowing us to offer this hospitality to all members, visitors, and friends.

Adult Growth and Learning Large turnout for Horizon’s workshop on end-oflife issues On Saturday, October 10th Horizon hosted a workshop entitled, “Authoring Life’s Final Chapter: Preparing for End-of-Life Transitions” which was attended by over forty Horizon members and friends from the surrounding community. Guest speakers covered end-of-life medical care, legal issues, memorial services and treatment of the body after death. Many thanks go out to the workshop’s organizers for a very informative day.

THE ART FORGER BY A. A. Shapiro Almost twenty-five years after the infamous art heist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum—still the largest unsolved art theft in history—one of the stolen Degas paintings is delivered to the Boston studio of a young artist. Claire Roth has entered into a Faustian bargain with a powerful gallery owner by agreeing to forge the Degas in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But as she begins her work, she starts to suspect that this long-missing masterpiece—the very one that had been hanging at the Gardner for one hundred years—may itself be a forgery. Share the Plate Sunday, October 18th The Sunday, October 18 Share the Plate recipient will be TXUUJM, Texas Unitarian Universalist Justice Ministry. The TXUUJM seeks to give a voice to UU values in the public arena. TXUUJM works to educate, organize, and advocate for public policies that; uphold the worth and dignity of every person, further justice, equity and compassion in human relations, protect religious freedom and create lasting positive social change. Some of the recent accomplishments led by Rev. Chuck Freeman include local long term job training for low wage workers and he founded Texas Faith Voices for Choice. This years priorities have been Women's Reproductive Justice, Medicaid Expansion and Economic Justice/ Income Inequality. This organization has a non-profit status so any contributions to a UU voice in public policy are tax deductible.

What is Metrocrest Services? An organization that serves Horizon’s neighbors in Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Addison, Coppell and the city of Dallas in Denton County. Their mission is to assist families, individuals and senior adults who are coping with crisis situations, need help stabilizing their lives, or who require support to live independently. How do we help Metrocrest each Sunday? You are invited to bring pantry items to Sunday Service for donation. Items must be new, not expired and no glass containers. Suggested items include: Canned vegetables, fruits and meat items Helper-type mixes Dried beans & rice
Seasonal fresh produce Breads and pastries Baking supplies Toiletries & hygiene items Household cleaning supplies Are there other opportunities for us to help Metrocrest? Every other month, on a Saturday, Horizon members work in the food pantry at Metrocrest Services, helping customers shop for groceries, re-stocking shelves, organizing etc. There are two shifts available 9-11am and 11am-1pm. Upcoming Dates in 2015: September 12, & November 14. Folks from Horizon also help with projects during the holiday season and in the summer. Who do I contact at Horizon about Metrocrest? YEAR-ROUND STEWARDSHIP IS WELL UNDER WAY In case you haven’t heard, Horizon is shifting to a year-round Stewardship Program, where each HORIZON UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH month about 20 families and individuals are asked to renew their pledges. These families are also given an opportunity to engage in a fun event with others pledging that month. We began the program in March 2015, and so far, about half of Horizon's pledging families have been contacted about pledge renewal and attending one of the monthly events. The rest of you will be contacted over the remainder of 2015 or in early 2016. Please watch for your pledge commitment letter and we hope you will attend and enjoy the activity that the leaders of your month choose. During your month we ask that you let our accountant, Menaca Padakandla, know your plans to support Horizon during the following year. ART ON THE HORIZON Current Artist Wendy Marceron was born in 1969 in Silver Spring, MD. She received a BFA from Texas Woman's University. Marceron has owned Faux Fusion Finishes since 2004. This company specializes in faux and decorative painting, custom art work and color consulting. Marceron participates in various Art shows and fairs in the area. She first attended Horizon in the late 90s and joined the church with her family in 2013.

Artist Statement Art helps us define our humanity; it seduces us with beauty, pushes us to define what we are repulsed by, and every imaginable response in between. Artists are compelled to create. The act of creating evokes pleasure and pain, like great love. Time disappears when with this love. The ultimate result is something that you hope will speak to others. My own art has incubated from subjective beginnings. My undergraduate work focused on psychological portraits. The backgrounds in these paintings were provocative and they started to interest me. In grad school I began painting Asian textiles approaching them as high contrast portraits. I started my own Faux Finishing business and became intrigued with the lack of subject matter on a fauxed wall. The technique, products and tools were intoxicating. Surface quality became paramount. My current work bridges the divide between art and faux. I use trowels, palette knives, even pine needles to escape the inhibiting brush. I push and pull the visual plane, as if it were a puzzle with a hidden truth. I scratch and stab. Inspired by rust, peeling paint, old wood, sound waves, distortion and objects that have been used to exhaustion. The surface is the story and color plays the role of both protagonist and antagonist. SPECIAL GROUPS If you are considering attending one of these groups for the first time, it is a good idea to contact them via email for more information and to get an orientation of what to expect in your first visit! You can check the calendar at http://calendar.horizonuu.org/ Horizon Book Group: 4th Tuesdays 12p. (bookclub@horizonuu.org) The Horizon Book Group meets at 12 Noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the church Library. Every June and November the group decides on the books for the following six months. Bring a brown bag lunch and join in this fun group that is open to women and men. You’ll be able to share in an invigorating conversation on the session’s book. Current selections are found in the Library information niche in the lobby/narthex. For more info, you may contact bookclub@horizonuu.org. Buddhist Sangha: Tuesdays 7 PM - 9:00 PM. (buddhists@horizonuu.org ) Buddhist Sangha ("Sangha" is equivalent to a covenant group) is a weekly gathering that studies the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism.) This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teachings of Buddhism. It is participatory and although consistency is encouraged, sessions can be attended on a drop in basis. We welcome anyone interested in a meditation practice. If you wish to come for an orientation, please arrive by 6:30. If you wish to view materials, e-mail the group at buddhists@horizonuu.org. CineMat CineMat meets on the 4th Saturday of the month. This group provides support and encouragement for women in helping them achieve their personal goals of improving their fitness level, eating more nutritionally, losing weight and learning to reduce daily stress. This group also participates in an annual service project, in local walk events and raises money healthywomen@horizonuu.org Men’s Support Group Saturdays, 8:00 am - 10:00 am. Men age 18 and over. The Men’s Support Group provides men a supportive, safe environment for sharing personal challenges and concerns in a confidential setting. Many men were socialized to share only things external to them. The Men’s Support Group offers a sanctuary to share more about matters of the heart. This group meets for food, fellowship, deepening friendships and occasional field trips. Topics of interest are presented to the group after eating. Group meetings include a check-in and discussion of a weekly life issue topic selected by a group member. SPECIAL GROUPS forgiveness, trust, and compassion. tuesdaywisdom@horizonuu.org Wings Parenting Mondays 9:30 am - 11:30 am (2 - 3 times a month). Parents of all ages. We welcome Moms and Dads to meet in the Horizon Church library. We have topics of interest not just about parenting UU children but personal and spiritual self-growth. Past topics have included: the philosophy of life according to Doctor Who, Karma, creating our "bucket list", our family trees, and what does it mean to be a UU parent. We also do a social outreach project once a year. Our schedule follows the school year and we break for school holidays and for the summer. During the school year, child care is provided. mondaywings@horizonuu.org The Women’s Friendship in Growth (WFIG) meets on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Wednesdays, from 7:30 - 9 pm in the Horizon Library. The purpose of this group is to strengthen friendships among women. In addition to regular check-ins about our lives, we have discussions that help us get to know one another better. On 5th Wednesdays we do a variety of fun activities!
