FROM THE MINISTER

mUUsings Greetings from your interim minister.

Could it get any busier? It seems like I have that thought more and more often these days. December is a complex and demanding month. There’s the regular holiday parade of social gatherings and obligations in addition to the normal routine of work and family life. And – on top of that – this is a community caught up in the work of the world and in search of a new minister. You continue to explore how to grow with the times as a Unitarian Universalist congregation involved in social justice work, committed to pastoral connections, educated in your values, dedicated to excellence in worship and challenged to be stewards of your resources. There are dozens of activities and events planned for these last few weeks of the year. More and more seems to be expected even as the days grow shorter and shorter. Could it get any busier? Such a paradox. December with its overly full calendar of activities is also nature’s time of longer nights, clear skies, bare trees, and cold days or snowy evenings. All reminders that this is a season to come within - to rest, to be with those who mean the most, to look

inward and remember the dreams that remind of futures not yet fulfilled. This season of darkness, when few creatures stir and seeds are nurtured beneath the soil, is a season for reflection and a time for seeking clarity. It is a complicated time, made more challenging by the need to balance doing with being. May you find a place of quiet in the chaos and a time for receiving in the midst of giving. May your December bring joy, peace and happiness.

Happy Holidays, Rev. Helen 972-492-4940 ext. 106

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING January 24, 2016 Ministerial Search Committee Update

Recommended Revision to HUUC By-Laws In anticipation of calling a Settled Minister this spring, your Board reviewed our current By-Laws and noted two problematic sections. Peter Campagna, Eddie Meaders and John Gill have discussed and recommended to the Board possible revisions, as well as some technical revisions due to typographical errors. Your Board of Trustees reviewed and approved for recommendation to the Congregation revisions identified on the attached. The key revisions are in Sections 9.1 (Called Ministers) and 9.3 (Employment of Called Ministers). Section 9.1 Called Ministers: our current By-Laws require a quorum of fifty-one percent (51%) of all voting members of the church to issue a call. The precise date in which we should anticipate issuing a call cannot be known at this point, but seems most likely to be either May 1 or May 8. May 8 is Mothers' Day, a weekend when some may have other commitments and unable to attend the Congregational Meeting, making a quorum of over half of our membership potentially troublesome. Failure to achieve the required quorum on the final Sunday of Candidating Week could cause the candidate to withdraw from consideration. Accordingly, the Committee and Board of Trustees recommend the quorum requirement be set at thirty-three percent (33%). This level for a quorum is consistent or even higher than most other UU churches with whom we checked. Section 9.3 Employment of Called Ministers: By-Laws as presently written require the employment contract for a Settled Minister be approved by a majority of voting members in a Congregational Meeting. The difficulty is the contract is unlikely to be finalized until shortly before we will vote whether to call the individual. A prospective Settled Minister will expect that the negotiated contract is settled before he/she comes for Candidating Week. The Committee and Board of Trustees recommend wording which requires the Board to approve the final contract, that a copy of the contract be attached to the agenda for the special Congregational meeting called to consider issuing a call, and that the vote to call the minister shall be deemed a ratification of the Minister's contract as approved by the Board. This revision simply allows the candidate to be reasonably assured that necessary contractual details are settled, but retains to the authority of the Congregation final ratification of the terms of employment. The following page includes all recommended revisions to HUUC's By-Laws. Language to be deleted is in red and marked through, and recommended new language is in bold typeface.

Section 6.7. Quorum In the last sentence of this section: ". . . the removal of a Trustee, dissolution of the Church, or the Amendment of these By-Laws, in which event specific requirements as stated in sections 7.4, 9.2, 9.6 9.1, 9.8, 14.1, and 15.1 (below) shall control" Section 8.3 Ministerial Search Committee In the last sentence of this section: ". . . and shall assist the Board in developing a mutually satisfactory contract for presentation to the Congregation for approval." Section 9.1 Called Ministers

In the second line of this section: ". . . Said call shall be upon recommendation by a Search Committee (see Section 8.4 8.3 above) . . ." In the third line of this section: "At least fifty-one percent (51%) thirty-three percent (33%) of all voting members of the Church . . ." Section 9.3 Employment of Called Ministers Beginning in the second line of this section: "Such contract shall be prepared and approved by the Board of Trustees, and a copy shall be attached to the agenda for the special meeting called per section 9.1 above and recommended to the Congregation for approval. The approval of any such contract shall require a majority vote of voting members of the Church at a properly convened Congregational meeting per ARTICLE 6 (above). A vote calling the minister shall be deemed a ratification of the Minister's contract as approved by the Board. Section 9.8 Removal of Called Ministers "A quorum for a Special Congregational meeting for this purpose shall constitute not less than fifty-one per cent thirty-three percent of members eligible to vote present in person."

Ministerial Search Com-

Horizon’s Ministerial Search Committee (MSC) has submitted Horizon’s Congregational Record to the UUA Transitions Office. Ministers who are in search for a new congregation to serve can now review Horizon’s information which includes a profile of the minister we seek and a profile of Horizon as a congregation. The MSC developed these profiles based on the small group discussions that were held in October and the congregational survey. The profiles are limited to 500 words each and the congregational record also contains other information about Horizon’s history, demographics, finances, and local community. Of course Horizon and its hopes for our next minister can’t possibly be described fully in 500 words. These profiles are just the beginning of the conversation with possible ministers. The profiles are presented here. Your comments are welcome at MSC@horizonuu.org. Ministerial Profile: Horizon seeks a passionate, energetic leader to inspire us in our commitment to live our values. The congregation is in search for a preacher who will embolden us to explore our spiritual paths, especially those leading us into the wider community, and help us develop healthy ways to grow our membership. Horizon will look to the minister to plan Sunday worship services that inspire and inform us. Incorporating the arts (musical, visual and dramatic) into the worship experience is an integral part of our spiritual practice. It is important to share the truth with our children, and willingly participate and encourage inter-generational worship. We acknowledge that memorial services and weddings are also critical aspects of a minister’s calling. We ask the

Page 12

minister to be an effective partner with our well-established Pastoral Care team to respond to members in crisis.

We are teachers as well as learners and hope to carry on our tradition of a strong intern program under the direction of our new minister. The ministerial candidate should be supportive of lifespan faith development, and encourage the congregation to participate in religious education for our children and youth, as well as Adult RE and small group offerings. Experience with staff and organizational management, and knowledge of policy governance are important skills for the minister we seek. Our candidate will be a competent manager of paid and volunteer staff, and work collaboratively with the board and lay leaders. The ideal ministerial candidate will have a combination of administrative skills as well as an approachable, flexible loving demeanor. We seek a minister who will project warmth and humor, and have the ability to empower lay leadership. An effective communicator will encourage congregants to get involved and feel connected which will help us retain members, and engage and inspire new members. The minister we seek will be a good listener who is authentic and emotionally mature. Reminders regarding healthy congregational habits keep us on our current path of being a healthy congregation, and benefit us in our professional and home lives. The minister will have the knowledge and desire to be involved with stewardship. The minister will encourage us to develop an overall financial plan, and build upon our successful, generous spirit of giving. Communication must come from all levels regarding the importance of pledges and gifts for fairly compensating our staff, strengthening our programs, and for reaching outside our walls.

We will encourage our minister to learn our church history while communicating and maintaining their personal ministry and style. We have traditions and relationships that are well established and cherished. Through the interim process and based on our exposure to other ministers in the region we understand that our new minister will help us experience worship and service in different ways, and will bring new talents to our congregation. We will ask our new minister to set a positive tone. Challenge us. Push us. Together we can change lives and create a wonderful future for our church and our community! Congregation Profile:

Horizon is a loving community of UU pioneers on the suburban plains of North Texas. We have a 27-year history of being a theologically diverse group dedicated to worshiping together on Sunday mornings throughout the year. We are a teaching church that has helped set the course for ten ministerial candidates to experience their calling through our intern program. We are a generous bunch having raised the funds for the purchase of over six acres of land, construction of our church building, and a recent addition. We are debt free and positioned for growth. Our lay leadership is strong, we are flexible, and we manage anxiety in a healthy way. Horizon members consider our church community to be a progressive, welcoming sanctuary within a conservative region. We support our children as free thinkers. We are a Welcoming Congregation and seek to be more culturally and socially diverse. We embrace our members in various stages of life, including our Men's Group that has been gathering since soon after our congregation formed and our unique Candle Lighters program for people with loss of brain function. We also reach out to the community with several Social Justice initiatives, and are supportive of UU organizations in North Texas and

the state. We have a long-term bond with our sister congregation in Petrosani , Romania. The focus of our spiritual experience together is our Sunday Worship service. We gather in an informal sanctuary surrounded by art exhibits and stained glass cupula, with a view of our playground, labyrinth and memorial garden. We embrace stimulating sermons that are thought-provoking, and innovative. We honor the free pulpit and the free pew, and find inspiration through the varied sources of our living tradition. We affirm, meditate, pray, sing, speak of the divine, and recognize there are those among us who do not believe in gods. Our music program is a strength and is considered to be an integral part of our spiritual experience. Our children join us for the first portion of the service each Sunday, and we strive to have several inter-generational worship experiences each year. Our varied Chalice Circles, Journey Groups and UU Wellspring also fuel the opportunity for spiritual exploration and engagement. Horizon views our religious education program as a key part of our mission. Our Director of Lifespan Religious Education has enhanced the learning opportunities for children, youth and adults. The OWL program and Coming of Age are significant milestones in the religious development of our teens. We seek a higher level of participation and growth in our youth and young adult membership. We are a congregation on the cusp of greater participation in Social Justice, growth of our membership and our church campus. We love our traditions and stories, and look forward to opening our arms to a new minister and creating the next chapter in the life of our church together. Keep your eyes on our Horizon – our UU spirits are ready to soar!

THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE In 1962, at age 17, Karen Armstrong entered a convent, eager to meet God. After seven brutally unhappy years as a nun, she left her order to pursue English literature at Oxford. But convent life had profoundly altered her, and coping with the outside world and her expiring faith proved to be excruciating Her deep solitude and a terrifying illness-diagnosed only years later as epilepsy—marked her forever as an outsider. In her own mind she was a complete failure: as a nun, as an academic, and as a normal woman capable of intimacy. Her future seemed very much in question until she stumbled into comparative theology;. What she found, in learning, thinking, and writing about other religions, was the ecstasy and transcendence she had never felt as a nun. Gripping, revelatory, and inspirational, The Spiral Staircase is an extraordinary account of an astonishing spiritual journey From the Barnes and Noble web site

ART ON THE HORIZON Deborah Boschert

Artist Statement I’m inspired by tiny scraps of cloth with unexpected bits of inspiring paint and ink. I pick up smashed bottle caps in parking lots and beautifully smooth stones at the beach. I appreciate peeling paint and scribbled notes. I’m nourished by fine art and sweeping landscapes. I embrace spontaneity and stability in equal measure. My art quilts reflect these diverse ideas and experiences. I build layers of design starting with fabric and combining commercial printed fabrics with fabric patterned with original designs. Personal symbols like houses, stones, leaves, ladders and bowls are often included in my work as I explore themes of growth, home and transition. A layer of stitching adds another element of design. I stitch on a traditional home sewing machine creating motifs and patterns that compliment the overall composition. The most personal element of my work is the improvisational hand embroidery. I love the meditative process of pulling the embroidery floss through the layers of fabric to create each individual stitch. In my art quilts, the tiny details are as important as the broader design. As in life, the tiny special moments are as important as the broader experiences.
