FUTURE SUNDAYS Horizon encourages you to attend weekly worship here within your community, Sundays 10:30AM * Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church, 1641 W. Hebron Pkwy, Carrollton TX 75010

March 23, “Blooming Where You Are Planted” - Mary Kay Hamilton We are not always where we expected or wanted to be. But wherever we are there is opportunity. I never thought I would learn to love being in Texas, but the closer I am to leaving, the more I discover I have deeper roots here than I imagined. Horizon has been fertile ground for me to grow and bloom.

March 30, “Planting Horizon” - Lyssa Jenkens, Intern Minister Church start-ups have the same slim odds of survival as any non-profit or small business, maybe even less among UU churches. Yet, Horizon has prospered in the 27 years since it was planted to serve the northwestern suburbs of Dallas. What conditions conspired to make this so? And, what is the yield of this success?

PASTA and FIASCO make it fun to raise funds that support our church. Actually, they are really just a great excuse for a party twice a year! Our annual spring fundraising auction is called FIASCO while PASTA is usually held in the fall and features a delicious Italian dinner (thus the name!) Members donate items, events, services, and classes that are then put into a silent auction. A few good examples include use of members’ vacation homes, a private dinner in a home or special restaurant, a bridge party, hand-made jewelry and even Spanish lessons. There is always entertainment, refreshments and lots of fun!!! Check the church calendar for these exciting events and plan to enjoy two evenings a year with your fellow fundraisers! You can find our on-line donation form for both auctions here. We've also put together a few "best practices" guidelines for promoting your donation: Don’t leave the date “to-be-determined.” People are reluctant to bid without being sure of the date. For a dinner or an outing, pick a specific date if at all possible, with a backup rain date if outdoors. Don’t be bashful in describing your offering. Advertising works! The following are some examples of past write-ups: "Experience the ultimate Middle Eastern Feast. First a Turkish Dinner, and then a Belly Dancing show and private lessons with two professional belly dancers." "Come fill your stomach and empty your wallet. It's Marty's Annual Pizza and Poker Game. Plenty of pizza and Shiner's. Male bonding at its best!" "Second annual Dessert Extravaganza. A consortium of dessert chefs will create a table-full of gorgeous desserts. From exotic fruits to Death by Chocolate - there will be something for every taste!"

Submit your on-line donations here. See more at: http://horizonuu.org

Come “Explore Horizon” with Us! For those who are visiting and want to know more about Unitarian Universalism and Horizon, or for members who want to learn more about how Horizon works, a series of classes may answer your questions.

On Saturday, March 22nd, “How Do U Fit into UU?” will be presented by members of the Membership Committee and other Horizon leaders. It starts at 10:30 AM and runs until 2:30 PM. Hear about the history of Horizon, how our members participate in the life of the church and what activities and offerings we have. We’ll also cover the expectations of membership. A light lunch will be served during class, which will be held in the church library.

On Sunday, March 23rd, Reverend Dennis Hamilton will lead “New to UU” from 12:30-2:30. Light lunch served. Learn about the history and structure and uniqueness of Unitarian Universalism. Hear about our Seven Principles that we strive to understand and integrate into our lives. This class will be in the Fellowship Hall after the Sunday service.

On Sunday, March 30th, Reverend Hamilton will conduct a New Member Sunday where anyone wanting to join Horizon may do so at that time. Contact him at revdennishamilton@mac.com if you would like to join.

You can enroll in the Exploring Horizon classes by sending an email to membership@horizonuu.org. Or, look for a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center in the church lobby. Please also feel free to send questions to the email address above—we sincerely hope you will join us!

Share the Plate for Sunday 16 MAR 2014 Horizon has a collection for non-profit organizations once a month during our worship service.

The Share the Plate collection on Sunday March 16 will be for the Texas Land Conservancy. The Texas Land Conservancy (TLC) is a non-governmental, 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of land in Texas. In essence, we are in the business of protecting natural areas from the negative effects of land fragmentation and poorly-planned development. Land conserved by TLC will be protected forever from becoming a subdivision, strip mall, or parking lot. We help landowners find an economical, realistic alternative to selling their land to a developer that allows ownership to remain in their hands, but puts the responsibility of conserving the land in ours. Many of these properties are working farms or ranches, while others contain important habitat for wildlife and native plant communities. All of these lands are beautiful examples of Texas’ natural heritage. TLC’s work ensures that economic viability and growth is balanced with what makes us Texan: our rural heritage, our open-spaces, our farms and ranches, our scenic vistas, and our natural resources. Our Vision A diverse and expanding network of protected natural areas throughout Texas supported by a community of Texans who share a commitment to enhancing the quality of life through land conservation. Our Mission The mission of Texas Land Conservancy is to conserve natural areas in Texas and to protect the physical and ecological integrity of their wildlife habitat, native plant communities, and scenic landscapes for the benefit of present and future generations.

1) All undesignated cash (not in envelope with instructions) will go to Share the Plate; 2) Checks MUST be made to Horizon UU with a memo Share-The-Plate or STP to be counted toward the donations for that day; 3) Undesignated checks without instructions are assumed to be donations to the church or to fulfill pledges; 4) This is our Horizon's primary source of funds for outreach into the world.

“Spirit in Practice” with Helena (Tina) Ulakovic

Tuesday, March 18th 6:00-7:30pm What is a spiritual practice? Do you have one? “Spirit in Practice” is a class designed for those who don’t yet participate in our yoga or Buddhist Sangha groups, or who wish to explore a variety of spirtual practices. This class will help Unitarian Universalists identify their spiritual needs and develop regular disciplines, or practices, of the spirit—practices that help them connect with the Sacred, with other people, and with their inner selves.

“A Long Strange Trip: The Complete Video Guide to Unitarian Universalist History” with Lauren Daniell and guests

Part III – The Birth of Unitarianism Becoming fully Unitarian, new frontiers forded by Transcedentalists, and develping into a force for social justice (1620 - 1860) Two showings: Sunday, April 13th 12:30-2:00 pm OR Horizon Library

Wednesday, April 16th 7:30-9:00pm Fellowship Hall

This segment is about the development of Unitarianism in America from 1620 through the death of Theodore Parker in 1860. The early fractures between religious liberals and Congregationalists in Colonial America will be discussed. It covers the effect of Joseph Priestley’s immigration and William Ellery Channing’s role in the formation of the American Unitarian movement. It tells the story of the final split between the Unitarians and the Trinitarian Congregationalists in the 1820s from both a theological and a legal perspective. This segment will cover the Arian/Socinian fracture and the Transcendentalism of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Theodore Parker. It will talk about the key role Fuller played in moving Transcendentalism out from a niche movement in Concord to becoming the driving force behind Unitarianism. Finally, the role Theodore Parker played in advancing Unitarianism beyond its traditional Bible-centered roots is covered, and highlights his role in some of the great social justice issues of the day, especially the abolition of slavery. The same segment will have two showings to accommodate members’ schedules. Close-captioned. Reserve childcare at childcare@horizonuu.org.
