The Heart of the Matter Marianna Seaton, Director of Lay Ministry My heart is broken pretty regularly; just about everything contributes to that – my sun sign says that I’m sensitive to a fault, and growing up with five brothers and living the life of an artist and rebel has had its challenges. Today, spiritual practices bring me even closer to my broken heart on a daily basis, and the sorrow moves both inward and outward. I’m not as torn apart by sorrow now; I embrace my broken heart because I know it as part of my wholeness. I can’t hold joy without holding sorrow. We have a heartfelt weekly ritual in our worship service where we are invited to share our joys and sorrows. It is a spiritual practice of sharing the essence of what moves us into the space of an open heart; allowing us to be with the spirit of loss and gain and all that they have to teach us. We are invited to express that which moves us both closer to our true self and to graciously look outward to the people in our congregation. We are invited to be in relationship with one another and to be fully present with each other, to be a caring community. To be in right relationship with a caring community, it’s important that we remember not only that we have something heartfelt to share, but also that we are sharing this news with a broad community. Some members who fill the chairs on Sunday have been around for many years – we may think of them as family and be very familiar with them. Others have come through our doors for the first time and may be feeling shy or alone. It’s inappropriate to have the same kind of conversation with a loved one as we might have with someone we have never met. Now, I must confess. I have been caught being way too familiar in my sharing of joys and sorrows at times – assuming that everyone knows whom I’m reporting about, and that this it is important to everyone. Our senior minister has called me back into covenant, and I am asking myself to be conscious of how to be welcoming to everyone who comes to worship with us on Sunday morning. Horizon is committed to being a welcoming and inviting church. I have made a personal commitment to being a better example, and I would like to share with you some ground rules for the joys and sorrows portion of our worship service.
Don’t get clinical. Save the medical details for a more intimate conversation. The right place for that kind of sharing is in privacy with our minister, myself, or anyone serving as a pastoral caregiver. Too much detail in the worship service makes some people very uncomfortable and is not welcoming to strangers.

It is never appropriate to air our dirty laundry. Right speech calls us to abstain from slanderous speech and harsh words that offend or hurt others and asks us to be friendly, gentle, and considerate when we speak. Never use words maliciously against others.
Respect the privacy of family and friends. Always ask permission to speak on someone else’s behalf.
Do your best to be brief, so that everyone who needs to has a chance to share.
Get to the heart of the matter. What is the essence of your joy or sorrow? How has your heart been moved or changed?
In this spirit of the love and compassion that we respectfully share with one another in our church community, please join me in expressing continued well wishes to Leland Mebine, Gordon Roe, Susan Powell, Rosie Huynh-Stolfi, Wendy Sue, and Tera Whitten who are challenged from illness. Each of them appreciates cards, phone calls, and your well wishes. As always, we hold dear those struggling to balance the care of their families with the care of their parents, those looking for sustainable employment, the forgotten or abused, and those who are bearing their burdens in silence. Our Pastoral Caregivers work with the Minister, the Director of Lay Ministry and the Neighborhood Groups in a spirit of cooperation to cherish and care for the members of our congregation. NOMINATING COMMITTEE SLATE OF CANDIDATES for JULY 1, 2013 – JUNE 30, 2014 The Horizon UU Church Nominating Committee is pleased to submit our slate of candidates for the Officers, Board Members and Nominating Committee positions for two year terms beginning July 1, 2013. We have provided a brief bio of each nominee outlining his or her qualifications. A sample Ballot will be sent out digitally along with the agenda and other information about the Congregational Meeting by April 19, 2013. Actual ballots will be available next to the sign up sheet in the lobby to be filled out and placed in the ballot box before the meeting on May 19, 2013. This group of candidates represents a diverse blend of talent, and a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. It includes long-time UU’s, as well as relatively new members who will undoubtedly bring fresh perspectives and new ideas to the table. Both current Treasurer, Jan McDowell, and Trustee, Elizabeth Gustwick, have agreed to continue their service on the Board. Sandy Steele continues the second year of her two-year term and Secretary, Nikki Henderson, continues the second year of her two year term. Trustees John Gill and Kent Darwin also continue the second year of their two year terms. Peter Hendee and Terri Allison will be rolling off the Nominating Committee and Jane Roehl and Betsy Rooney will continue for the second year of their two year terms. The Board appointed member, Linda Alred, will also roll off the committee and be replaced by the 2023-2014 Board appointed member. Explaining the Mysteries of Interim Ministers by Paul Nelson
In May of next year, Dennis will retire from his ministerial duties. Following his retirement, Horizon will have an interim minister for two years before calling a new full time senior minister. Some common questions regarding this process are “Why will we have an interim minister?”, “What will the interim minister do?” and “Why will the interim minister have a two year term?” First, it is important to understand that interim ministers are specially trained to guide churches through this transition period. Also note that the practice of hiring an interim minister following a ministerial departure is almost universal among UU churches. There are two major reasons for a congregation to have an interim minister. The first reason is the congregation’s ability to accept a successor. The interim period will reduce the inevitable comparisons between the new minister and the former minister. Second, the members of Horizon have had a healthy, long term relationship with Dennis. While different members will have different feelings following his departure, many will have feelings of denial, anger, or anxiety. We have to deal with these feelings in a straight forward fashion. It takes one year to go through this process and establish our identify separate from Dennis. The second year allows Horizon to focus on the future and preparing for a new senior minister. The interim minister is trained to guide the church through this process and help the church return to full spiritual health. The interim minister is not eligible to be called as the senior minister. Because the interim minister is on the job for a limited time, he or she is able to honestly address issues within the church. To enable congregations to heal and enrich their sense of religious community during the transition, the interim minister is trained to: • Provide reassurance that a seasoned professional is working with the congregation. • Deal with the various emotions surrounding the former minister. If these emotions are not dealt with during the interim term, they would be dumped on the following minister. • Help the congregation review its operations and clarify its goals. This ensures that the church is running smoothly for the new minister. • Model a different, but successful, style of ministry. This reassures the congregation that more than one ministerial style can be effective. The interim period is a rare opportunity for the church to review its goals, assess its programs, and prepare for its “new life”. It usually takes two years for a church to grow into its new identity, independent of both positive and negative feelings about the ministry that has ended. Based on the success we have had with our many excellent intern ministers, I am confident that we will find an outstanding new senior minister.

April 14 “What are You Willing to Die for?” - Rev. Dennis Hamilton Sacrifice is not a word I hear very often in Unitarian Universalist gatherings. And, truly, it made me uncomfortable when I heard this was the topic for April. Even after I expunged the images of lambs and goats, the word still evoked a worrisome feeling. I have seen too many lives sacrificed on the alters of prejudice, propriety and power. No thank you! But, I was wrong. Sacrifice is not inherently good or bad. It is simply fundamental to all aspects of life, physical and spiritual. What happens in nature without some kind of sacrifice? What do we value in our lives that did not come with some measure of sacrifice? Join me as we revisit this word, this ancient concept, and consider its place in our lives today.

(Actually I said, “Are you crazy?”) Well it is called “Stump the Minister” and this year I may have met my match. What IS the right thing to do in the Middle East? Do we attack Syria? Iran? Do we do nothing? Aid and abet? And, ahem, what about North Korea while we are at it.

Share the Plate for Sunday 21 April 2013 Horizon has a collection for non-profit organizations once a month during our worship service. This month's collection plate is for Texas Land Conservancy.
Over the last thirty years, the members of the Texas Land Conservancy have been able to conserve 85,000 acres of land all over Texas, through 109 conservation projects spanning diverse landscapes: from chalk mountains to pineywoods, salt flats to high deserts. Our Mission The mission of Texas Land Conservancy is to conserve natural areas in Texas and to protect the physical and ecological integrity of their wildlife habitat, native plant communities, and scenic landscapes for the benefit of present and future generations. Our Goals
To reduce the negative effects of land fragmentation and poorly planned development by protecting critical lands through ownership or permanent conservation easements. To maintain a substantial and diverse inventory of protected lands that reflect the biological diversity and significance of Texas' natural heritage. To responsibly steward our conservation easements and land holdings through monitoring, land management, and enforcement of restrictions. To restore and enhance native habitats on lands under TLC protection. To work with other organizations and individuals as appropriate to conserve and protect additional areas not protected by TLC. To educate the public about Texas' natural areas and provide opportunities for the public to enjoy TLC's protected properties. To establish and uphold a visible and respected presence in the state and to accomplish the broad goals of land conservation in Texas. To build and grow a substantial base of members, funding support, corporate and individual donors and partners. To obtain and manage funds to carry out TLC's mission in a fiscally responsible manner. To build and increase TLC's internal capacity to support its programs, including a professional staff, a strong and diverse Board of Directors, and committed volunteers.

The C & C Chalice Circle meets 2nd and 4th Sundays from 1:30p Earth Centered Spirituality Chalice Circle (earth-centereduu@horizonuu.org ) The Earth-Centered Spirituality Chalice Circle is a social/support group for people who are interested in, or already know they are following, an Earth-centered spiritual path. They meet on the 2nd Saturday of each month, at 2:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall at Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church. We love visitors, so please, come check us out! They meet in the library 2nd Tuesday of most months at 12 noon. Occasionally we take a field trip instead of having a potluck lunch. Tuesday Wisdom Circle (tuesdaywisdom@horizonuu.org ) A chalice circle that offers a check-in and discussion of a weekly life issue topic selected by a group member. WINGS Chalice Circle is a fun and friendly group whose purpose is to support the person within each parent by creating friendships and nurturing our intellect and creativity. Reloadable Kroger Fundraiser Cards • Cards are assigned to customers by Horizon UU Church and purchased for just $1 each. Supporters can reload their card and pay for the reloads with cash, check, debit, or credit cards at any time, at any Kroger store, for any amount up to $500 at Customer Service or $100 by cashiers. • Reloads have to be a separate transaction from use. Cards with $0 balance are deleted from the system after 90 days and cannot be reactivated. A new card will have to be assigned and purchased from Horizon for $1. • Card is accepted in all Kroger stores and its affiliates throughout the US. It can be sent to family and friends out-of-state and still benefits Horizon, as long as the card is reloaded and used. Keep track of your card balance: At the bottom of your last receipt, call 866-822-6252 or on-line using the PIN on the back of the card. • Reload and use often! Horizon earns a 5% rebate on your purchases! BONUS: Now used ones don’t go in the trash.
