To achieve a four-stateroom layout with a fullbeam, on-deck master and maintain the volume and innovative features that define the FD Series required thoughtful consideration on the part of Cor D. Rover and Horizon's R&D and naval architecture teams. The biggest challenge the team faced was balancing the shorter length with the signature FD Series styling and voluminous interior. The introduction of the FD70 marks an exciting moment for Horizon, as it expands the series to include a true owner/operator yacht in a very popular size range for Horizon clients. At the Drawing Boards With Cor D. Rover The world renowned designer chats about how one yard’s willingness to take a risk led to the creation of the most acclaimed yacht series the industry has seen in recent years.
[?] HOW DID THE FAST DISPLACEMENT SERIES COME ABOUT?
C
or D. Rover is not afraid to push the envelope. For over 20 years, the Dutch designer has been behind the lines of some of the
most beautiful builds on the water, from 28ft runabouts to 220ft megayachts and everything in between. Innovation and technology are his areas of focus, fueled by a passion for design and creativity. Such creativity was inspired one rainy afternoon in Holland when, as Cor recalls, he and his team were discussing the transition of vehicle preference in Europe from small sedans to SUVs and how to translate the demand for space and looks to yacht design. "We began by looking at how much real estate we could fit in a 24 meter hull," he recalls. Armed with the result: drawings for a beamy 78ft fast-displacement hull with five staterooms, Cor visited the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and stopped by the Horizon Yachts booth, where he sat down with CEO John Lu and showed him the drawings.
“John immediately understood our idea and saw the potential for this type of yacht and what it could
give to his clients,” says Cor. “I was brave to put it
on paper, but John was even braver to develop it.”
deck and even more interior volume added. The FD87 is now the Series’ most popular model. Since then, the yard/designer collaboration has involved many more owners bringing their requests for custom features and has seen the FD Series grow to its current complement of seven models, with new clients joining the family in impressive numbers. Such success would never have been possible, says

O

f the rainy afternoon inspiration that led to one of the most acclaimed yacht series the industry has seen in recent years, with
nearly 20 new-builds sold in a three-year span and counting, Cor says it’s a formula that will see longterm success. “The fact that we sell so many, that more and more people are turning to Horizon, and that other brands like Princess and Sunseeker are following suit with big-volume designs of their own, proves that this concept works.” While the FD85 and larger FD yachts are large boats when it comes to owner operation but still manageable by a family or owners with small crew, the FD77 and the latest FD70 are much more easily handled and are true owner/operator yachts in all respects. “I find working with Horizon a big, big pleasure, not only for the client but also for me, and I work with many shipyards,” says Cor. “It’s very exciting to work with them – they never say no, instead they try to find a solution that still guarantees stability and safety. They are one of my favorites. “Just like Porsche did when creating the Cayenne SUV, we did the same with the FD Series. Now the rest of the market is following us. Volume is king and always will be.”
[?] WHAT IS THE MOST REMARKABLE FD CUSTOMIZATION?
O
ne such request was accommodated aboard the FD85 Julind, which was built for an Australian owner who requested both a tele-
scoping mast to navigate the low bridges in Perth as well as a touch-and-go helipad. “That was a most unusual request,” says Cor. “It was something I had never seen before, but Down Under, people have a different way of life!” Horizon came up with the technical solution and incorporated a telescoping mast as well as a reinforced carbon fiber hardtop while Cor ensured the aesthetics of the yacht were maintained. EXPERIENCE S
andy Satullo has been a boater all his life. The former boat dealer and marina owner/operator has experience with boats of all sizes, his own yachts ranging over the years from a 98ft Destiny to a 142ft Richmond. So, when it came time
to consider his next yacht, he visited the 2019 Palm Beach Boat Show and came upon the brand new FD77 at the Horizon display. It was the space and the window plan of the FD77 that struck him first. “It took me a little while to get use to the exterior profile, to be honest,” he says. “I’m a bit more traditional in general. But, the interior is amazing – the amount of space, the openness, the flow, the on-deck master, the windows… It all drew me in and each time I looked at it the exterior started looking better.” A post-show sea trial on a bumpy day in the Palm Beach Inlet sealed the deal. An experienced yachtsman who enjoys cruising The Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Med, Sandy says he was “blown away” by the seaworthiness and ride quality afforded by the High Performance Piercing Bow and hull design. The conversations to build his next boat with Horizon began.

“I’m an outdoors person, I like to operate the boat outside and enjoy the sunshine,” Sandy says. “I wanted the enclosed skylounge, but I also wanted the open air.” The discussions continued, Sandy and his broker Jim McConville going back and forth with the Horizon USA team and the yard, reviewing different plans, considering skylights, opening roofs, and opening side windows. “I don’t even remember who said, ‘Let’s put another deck on top and be done with it’,” says Sandy. But as soon as Horizon’s engineers agreed that performance would not be compromised, that’s exactly what was decided: a tri-deck version of an extended FD87 hull with a lightweight flybridge. THIS PAGE Sandy and Sandra (above) celebrate at the Global Rendezvous. Owners of the FD102 (bottom) tour their full-scale interior mockup.
“Horizon will do as much or as little as you want and you can get as involved as much as you want to,” says Sandy. Having been through the process of building a boat enough times to understand what it entailed, Sandy prefers to be involved in the details. Working first with the West Palm Beach office, broad decisions such as colors, patterns and ideas of what they were leaning towards in terms of the interior layout, look and feel were sent to the yard. Three weeks later, when Sandy, his girlfriend Sandra and Jim entered the Horizon headquarters in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the Horizon team presented him with options, colors and styles based on his preference list. “I was truly impressed with their organization. It narrowed things down considerably.” Having visited many shipyards around the world, Sandy said his visit to Horizon was a great experience and he was continually impressed with the technology, organization and
“I WOULD SUGGEST THAT ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO BUILD A BOAT VISIT THE YARD. WE WOULD BE DISCUSSING SOMETHING AND FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER A NAVAL ARCHITECT WOULD SHOW UP WITH NEW DRAWINGS WITH FOUR OR FIVE DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR WHAT WE HAD JUST DISCUSSED.”

efficiency. “I would suggest that anybody who wants to build a boat visit the yard,” he says. “What was unique to me was the engineering capacity they have to do things in-house. We would be discussing something and fifteen minutes later a naval architect would show up with new drawings with four or five different options for what we had just discussed.” Within the yard’s design centers, the scope of materials to select, from fabrics and countertops to colors, textures, faucets and drawer pulls, was yet another aspect that impressed the seasoned owner. “It’s amazing how accommodating the team at Horizon is,” says Sandy. “We spent hours designing the aft deck chairs, for instance, and with every little design change we would discuss, within minutes I would have an answer, which was really unique. THIS PAGE Visiting the yard's design centers and meeting directly with the design team allows Horizon owners to fully customize their build.
“Production builders may say they will work with you to personalize your boat, but in the end you only have a couple of choices and can give limited input. Horizon is a custom builder.” As Sandy prepared to leave the yard and accompany the Horizon team to Australia for the annual Global Owners Rendezvous, he noticed some drawings that looked familiar. “I pointed them out to John and he smiled and said, ‘Well, after we got all of the drawings done with your boat we decided to build one for spec.’ I was thrilled that he thought enough of our idea to make it another FD model.” And so. the FD92, due to debut at the 2020 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, was born. The 2019 Horizon Power Catamaran Rendezvous was held in the glorious turquoise blue waters of the Exumas and saw 12 yachts and nearly 100 guests join the event. Hosted in April, this year’s Rendezvous focused on bringing awareness to and raising much-needed funding for the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, a non-profit organization that mans and protects the park stretching from Shroud Cay to Cambridge Cay in the Bahamas. Unaffected by the recent Hurricane Dorian, this park has long served as a valued destination for all of our owners, each of whom have a vested interest in preserving the pristine reefs and prolific sea life that make this region such splendid cruising grounds.

beach games and water sports. The captains assembled the yachts for our iconic “Raft UP” pictures and guests toured the new yachts in the fleet and posed for the PC Family pictures while sporting this year’s souvenir rash guards. Day 3 // Pearl Island and Chubb Cay Back aboard the boats for a leisurely cruise to Chubb Cay, our group made a pit stop at Pearl Island, just off Atlantis near Nassau. This island made for a perfect venue for an amazing Bahamas-style luncheon, which was kindly hosted by Alliance Insurance. Guests enjoyed this very special little destination, lounging in beach cabanas or climbing to the top of the lighthouse to take in the spectacular views before continuing on to Chubb Cay. Day 4 // Chubb Cay Club With their PowerCats all lined up together on a dock, the owners made good use of the fabulous facilities at Chubb Cay Club. Many lazed around the pool, some went fishing, and a relaxing afternoon was enjoyed by all. The crazy hat cocktail party by the pool kicked off the evening, followed by a formal dinner generously hosted by Marine Professionals Inc. (MPI) with a delightful selection of wine graciously provided by Yacht Repairs and Maintenance (YRM). Our resident musician, George, provided the evening’s entertainment.

SUPPORT THE BAHAMAS Following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Dorian in the Abacos and on Grand Bahama island in September, Horizon Yachts loaded the Horizon E88 Wild Duck with nearly $10K worth of insulin, 10 generators and a salon full of supplies and journeyed from the U.S. office in Fort Lauderdale to Hope Town, to make a delivery of these much-needed supplies.
Dressed to the theme of the Wizard of Oz, the 74’ Seaglass nabbed first place for “Most Work”, recognized for presenting a yellow brick road and all of the characters from the film, including a flying monkey – well represented by the Captain, Jamie, dangling off the side of the boat from the dinghy crane. Jabulani took home the “First Place” prize for their Gilligan’s Island theme. The owners and crew went all out with the décor, even recreating the opening credits from the television show with their own faces on their characters. Taking a more serious approach, Hye Life won the “Most Original” award for finding humor in an unfortunate event that befell the boat earlier in the season. Dressed in the theme of a lightning strike, the crew and owners poked fun at the circumstance

There was much excitement in anticipation of the day’s fishing competition, and, although the fish did not cooperate, two brave boats tried their luck and had fun in the process. That afternoon, the dock buzzed with activity as owners and crew dressed their yachts for the themed yacht event and the transformation was nothing short of jaw-dropping. Our judges, Laura and Spencer, faced the arduous task of visiting each yacht and assigning the awards with professionalism and bravery. It was no easy feat, but in the end, Seaglass, Jabulani and Hye Life came out on top.
cracked fresh on the dock was once again a delight While these areas of the Bahamas will continue to rebuild, the many other beautiful islands and cays in the island country remain intact. The country relies heavily on tourism so we encourage everyone in the Horizon family to consider The Bahamas for your winter cruising destination this year!

With another Horizon Rendezvous in the books, memories made and new friendships formed, from all of us at the Powercat Company, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our owners, their guests, and everyone who contributed to make this event a tremendous success. Your support means the world to us.

A remarkably well-rounded yacht, the E75 blends luxury and style with functional design in a classic flybridge motoryacht, and is available in a variety of configurations including Enclosed Bridge, Open Bridge or Cockpit with many options for owner customization. Incorporating Horizon’s advanced composite construction technologies, well-planned layouts, and modern and spacious interior design options, the E75 is equally suited for the first-time yachtsman as well as the mid-level yacht owner who is ready to ease into something larger.

Nestled on the southwestern coast of Taiwan, the vibrant city of Kaohsiung represents a juxtaposition of manufacturing and cultural tourism. Colonized by the Dutch in the 1600s, the city was modernized and developed rapidly under Japanese rule, which ended after World War II. Steel and petrochemical industries continue to flourish, and Kaohsiung now also serves as the epicenter of a variety of industries, including yachtbuilding in the Far East. Today, the Port of Kaohsiung is the largest and busiest harbor in Taiwan, and the combination of natural splendor, gastronomy and culture make this city a bustling gem on the sea.

and culture together in a vibrant architectural center meant to serve as a cultural and visitor landmark while still celebrating the industry what allows Kaohsiung to flourish. Visit the Horizon City Marina, the Kaohsiung Maritime Culture and Popular Music Center, and the Pier-2 Art Center. At one time the site of an abandoned warehouse, Pier-2 was discovered by a group of artists who transformed the space into a fine art showcase, where artistic warehouse clusters and an Operation Center provide space for budding and established Taiwanese artists to showcase their talents. Managed by the Kaohsiung City Bureau of Cultural Affairs, the center is now the headquarters for artistic development in southern Taiwan and provides exhibitions and festivals throughout the year underscoring this city’s transformation into an attractive cultural hub. The Lotus Pond and Temples One of the most picturesque attractions in Kaohsiung is the Lotus Pond, a manmade lake teeming with lotus flowers and surrounded by colorful temples and sculptures. Here, the Dragon and Tiger pagodas invite visitors to enter through the Dragon's mouth and exit through the Tiger's mouth to ensure good fortune.

Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum Buddhism, Taoism and Christianity make up the prominent religious beliefs in Taiwan, and no trip to Kaohsiung is complete without a visit to the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum. This Mahayana Buddhist cultural, religious and educational museum is one of Taiwan’s top 10 landmarks and houses one of the tooth relics of Sakyamuni Buddha, the founder of the Buddhist faith. Eight pagodas representing a human idea – such as education, goodness and giving – lead to the Front Hall housing the museum, shops and restaurants. Peppered with shrines, exhibition spaces and galleries, as well as the 48 Underground Palaces not open to the public, this space is truly a site to behold.
