In the years that I’ve been involved with the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce I’ve been impressed with the quality of programs and events that are organized and delivered to Chamber members by the Chamber staff and countless volunteers. One of the premier programs that the Chamber offers each year is Leadership Berkeley, which will begin its 23rd year in September. This 10-month Norm Slemenda program, created to develop and enhance community leadership, Chairman of the Board provides practical insight and useful information for each participant and includes leadership lessons, tours of the community, group activities, and experiential learning. Monthly modules focus on Education, Healthcare, Local Government, Public Safety, Human Services, Business, and Community Cultures and History. Also included in the program is a three-day trip to our State Capitol in Charleston to learn about the West Virginia Legislature and State government. We continue to receive rave reviews about the program and encourage you to nominate colleagues or co-workers. Nominations will be received through June 14, 2013 and all those nominated will receive an application. The Leadership Berkeley Committee reviews the applications and selects approximately 25 participants for each year’s class. We appreciate the Leadership Berkeley Committee, led by Chairman Rick Manning (United Bank), and the Chamber staff for making this program a huge success year after year. Highmark West Virginia has named West Virginia University Hospitals-East City Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center+ in Knee and Hip Replacement. The Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic (EPFC) has been awarded $3,400 additional amount in West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program (NIP) tax credits to distribute. The Clinic was awarded a record $46,880 credits in September 2012 which had been distributed or pledged to donors as of April 1. The Martinsburg-Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce is looking for a volunteer(s) to assist with the collection of data for the ACCRA Cost of Living survey. This volunteer will be asked to visit various businesses around the county and obtain prices on items ranging from bread and milk to clothing and tennis balls. The Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services. It is based on more than 90,000 prices covering almost 60 different items for which prices are collected three times a year. The composite index is based on six components – housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care and miscellaneous goods and services.

April was Community Cultures and History for Leadership Berkeley Exploring community cultures and history was the name of the game for April’s Leadership Berkeley Session. The biggest challenge was selecting the few places to tour of the many options available. After a leadership lesson on Decision Making, led by classmates Jennifer Bishop (MVB Bank), Katrina Rosario (Ecolab), and Keith Whetsel (Essroc), the group toured Butler’s Farm Market and met with Greg Butler who discussed with the group the many changes that have occurred over the years in the agricultural industry in Berkeley County. The group then went downtown to tour and learn about the services of the Martinsburg-Berkeley County Public Libraries, many of which are now online and available to all library card holders, including free magazines, e-books, and other resources. After the library, the group toured the Martinsburg Roundhouse Center and Aspen Hall. Special thanks to Greg Butler (Butler’s Farm Market), Kelly Tanksley (Martinsburg-Berkeley County Public Libraries), Rosetta Chiofalo (Martinsburg Roundhouse Center), and Charlie Connolly (Aspen Hall).
