When our homeowner customers purchased a Georgian-style home in Providence, RI, they adored the location and neighborhood but the house itself lacked modern appeal. Built in the early 1900’s, the antiquated old house was in disrepair and needed to be torn down. The homeowners dreamed of a contemporary new house that deviated from classic New England styling. The main goal for the design of the new home was to create a “holistically-well living space” with a modern floor plan, ample ventilation, and plenty of natural light. When it came to selecting a window line for the project, architect Doug Brown (DBVW Architects) choose the Kolbe VistaLuxe Collection for its sleek modern styling, wide variety of options, and versatility. He worked with one of Horner’s Architectural Sales Representatives, Peter Landol-

fi, to create a dynamic window plan that would help drive the design and shape the aesthetic of the dramatic contemporary home. For example, one of the main features of the home, a striking “stair tower”, incorporated an expansive oversize window that was designed to spill gorgeous natural light onto every floor of the home. Each window in the home was meticulously planned to either open inwards or outwards to optimize the cross breeze and air flow throughout the house.
The cohesive vision shared by the whole team led to a finished home that not only instills feelings of relaxation and wellness, but that also exceeded all of the project’s initial goals. The sleek contemporary home’s open floor plan and large expanses of glass provide soothing natural ventilation and beautiful sunlight from virtually all directions. farmhouse chic P R E A S S E M B L E D Taking cues from both midcentury modern and farmhouse design styles, new in our photo gallery is a sleek and unassuming staircase that seems both unpretentious and chic at the same time. When Ben LaMora of Lineal Inc. began work on the renovation of this luxury beach house in 2018 the plan was to restore the home’s original staircases. However, by January 2019 it became clear that if the homeowners wanted to enjoy the summer season in their new home, that plan would need to change. That’s when Ben called on our expert team of stair builders to help design and build a Cooper Preassembled Staircase to meet the homeowner’s tight deadline.
Ben provided us his own concept sketches and cad drawings, and then we engineered a set of partially unsupported staircases that we would fabricate in our own shop and install at the jobsite. The partially unsupported staircases and platforms give the home an open and airy feel and help contribute to the light, bright aesthetic of the home. Powder-coated black 5/8” solid steel balusters by Custom Iron are flanked by simple 2” square steel newel posts in the same finish. The Cooper Stairworks N-3415 profile handrail in White Oak gently guides the ascender from floor to floor. White Oak treads and cove were dictated by the gorgeous herringbone patterned floors on the first floor.
S T A I R Thank you to Lineal Inc. for choosing Horner Millwork and Cooper Stairworks to be a part of this extraordinary renovation and for allowing us to photograph your beautiful project. See this story and more photos on the Horner Millwork blog, February 2020.

colonial-revival I N S P I R E D As guests are welcomed through the charming Colonial Revival-inspired double door entrance way with its classic fanlight transom, they may expect to be entering a quaint entrance hall of modest proportions. Instead, beyond those doors a grand foyer is revealed that is sure to surprise and delight. Here at Horner Millwork we are proud and honored to have provided the curved staircase that serves as the centerpiece of this breathtaking space. The magic of this stair began to take shape during the design phase, where the homeowner’s dreams, clever engineering, and timeless architectural elements came together serendipitously. White oak treads and risers were meticulously hand selected for grain and character. When it came to the layout of the stair, the first three starting steps were designed to feature elegant curves that mimic a baby grand piano. Those steps were strategically positioned to create a

comfortable walking line from the front door up the staircase. These whimsical treads hug the walls and meander around the square corners of the front foyer area as they meet the curved wall just ahead. Also at the base of the stair, adjacent to the wall, is a gorgeous volute that sits upon a generous 3” thick buttress style stinger. The staircase curves gracefully up to the second floor, and then just before ascension rests at the balcony, the shape of the staircase takes on a gentle bow. This stair features beautiful solid bronze fluted balusters that march uninterrupted from the first-floor foyer, past the curved second-floor balcony, and up to the home’s third-floor library over 30 steps above. The balustrade is comprised of a solid bronze 3/8” x 1-1/2” top flat bar that is recessed up into the underside of the Cooper Stairworks 6014 custom curved sapele handrail. At the base of the balusters an adjacent solid

The staircase appears to be floating on air as it seamlessly flows from the first-floor foyer up to the third-floor library. That feat took strategic and detailed communication by Cooper Stairworks and Lineal Inc. during the design phase to execute successfully. Cooper Stairworks supplied dogleg sub-stringers for the base of each stair so that the ceiling on the underside of the finished staircase would be continuous from the first floor to the third floor once the wire mesh and the skim coat plaster was applied. Thank you to Lineal Inc. for choosing Horner Millwork and Cooper Stairworks to be a part of this extraordinary project. See this story and more photos on the Horner Millwork blog, April 2020.
