RANDY DEDINI FOURTH SEASON AS HEAD COACH SONOMA STATE, 1993

Randy Dedini, the 2007 Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year, returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Hornet program. With a career record of 29-17-12, Dedini has never had a losing season on the Hornet sidelines and has coached 13 first- or second-team all-Big Sky selections, including offensive player of the year, Katie McCoy, in 2007. Sacramento State went 8-5-5 in 2009 (3-2-2 Big Sky) in Dedini’s third season as head coach. The Hornets had the stingiest defense in the conference, allowing just 13 total scores in ‘09 while netting 20 goals on offense. Savannah Abercrombie was named three-time Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week and seven players were given all-conference honors, including a first-team selection for Cori Shreve. The Hornets produced their third straight winning season in 2008, the second straight with Dedini as head coach. The team finished with a 9-8-2 overall record, including a 3-3-1 mark inside of Big Sky play. Two Hornets, Kim Kemper and Kara Taylor, earned first team all-Big Sky honors, while Ashley Forbes, Sarah Howard, Shreve and Christina Trenton earned honorable mention honors. Kemper also became the second straight Hornet to win the Big Sky Golden Boot award, given to the league’s leading scorer. Under the guidance of Dedini in 2007, his first season as head coach, the Hornets made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history after collecting their first-ever Big Sky Tournament title. The Hornets also won the Big Sky regular season title for the first time in school history, while posting a program-record 12 wins. For his efforts, Dedini earned conference coach of the year honors, becoming the first coach in program history to do so. Dedini oversaw nine Hornets who earned all-Big Sky honors during his first season, including Big Sky Offensive MVP Katie McCoy. McCoy was also named Big Sky Tournament MVP, and earned the conference’s Golden Boot award. As an assistant from 2004-06, Dedini oversaw the team’s ascension into the top of the Big Sky standings. During the fall of 2006, the women’s program reached the Big Sky Tournament championship game for the first time in program history. The team’s 10-7-4 record was also a then program-best until the 2007 team bettered that mark. In 2006, a highly-touted recruiting class made major contributions during the year. The program’s 30 goals during the season were fueled by Dedini’s aggressive offensive approach and the ability of the newcomers to contribute immediately. Sacramento State also outshot its opponents 172-106. Dedini began in 2004 with the Hornets, serving as the goalkeeper coach. During that year, freshman keeper Brittany Auernig was named Rookie of the Year after making eight starts and 59 saves. In 2005, Dedini made the move to top assistant. The Hornets’ recruiting efforts and change in their philosophy of play paid off with a then program-best second place finish in the conference standings and an 8-8-3 overall record. The team also advanced to the Big Sky Tournament for the first time since 2001. Dedini’s offensive approach meshed well with a young group of skilled players. In addition to assisting in all aspects of the women’s soccer program, Dedini was director of the women’s soccer summer camps his last two years as an assistant. Before coming to Sacramento State, Dedini spent five seasons as the assistant coach of the men’s varsity soccer team for Quaker Valley High School in Pittsburgh, Pa. In 2002, the team won the state championship. Dedini also spent five years playing with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League, winning awards such as team MVP, Iron Man and the century award for breaking the 100-cap mark. He began his 11-year professional career after playing two years at Sonoma State as the starting goalkeeper and graduating with a B.S. in kinesiology. In 1993, he was an All-American, and in 1992 and 1993, he received all-conference honors. Dedini is a Northern California native, graduating from Vacaville High School in 1988 and playing for two seasons at American River College. He and his wife, Katie, have two daughters, Jordyn and Jaycie and one son, Jake.

MAUREEN WHITNEY EIGHTH SEASON AS ASSISTANT COACH SACRAMENTO STATE, 2001

Maureen Whitney will begin her fourth season as the top assistant under head coach Randy Dedini. She is a familiar face to the women’s soccer program, with a previous stint as an assistant from 2000-03. She also served as the co-camp director of the Hornets’ summer soccer camps over those four years, a position she resumed from 2007-08. Whitney assists with the day-to-day duties of the women’s soccer program, including recruiting and on field coaching. In her eight seasons as an assistant coach, Whitney has helped coach Hornet players to 18 first- or secondteam all-Big Sky Conference selections, in addition to 26 honorable mentions. Whitney, who graduated from Sacramento State in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, was a two-sport athlete for the Hornets, competing from 1998-2000 in soccer and softball. As a defender for the women’s soccer team, she was named Defensive MVP following her senior season, and during her two-year career, played in 24 matches, recording two goals and two assists. She was an assistant coach on the under-18 National Championship squad at San Juan in 2006. All told, Whitney has spent the past seven years developing young talent throughout the local youth competitive soccer ranks. An accomplished athlete, Whitney has spent nine seasons playing for the California Storm of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. A fivetime all-star, Whitney has captained the Storm along with Brazilian soccer icon, Sissi, and has played alongside former and current national team players such as Brandi Chastain and Leslie Osborne. The Storm have reached the national championship match five times with Whitney on the field, winning the title twice, and in 2005, Whitney received the honor of WPSL MVP. Whitney did not begin playing soccer until the age of 19. Already a two-sport athlete at Walla Walla Community College playing basketball and softball, Whitney was asked to join the soccer program in its first year of existence. She completed her eligibility at Walla Walla as a two-time NWACC all-star. Whitney was also a three-sport athlete at Central Kitsap High School, graduating in 1995 after competing in volleyball, basketball and softball.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE SECOND SEASON AS VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT SACRAMENTO STATE, 2008

Jennifer Lawrence begins her second season as the volunteer assistant coach of the women’s soccer team after playing four seasons with the Hornets from 2005-08. Lawrence was a goalkeeper in her playing career and works with the current squad’s netminders in a coaching role. She completed her playing career in 2008 with 37 starts and 49 goals against in 3,522 minutes played. She started a career-high 19 games making 104 saves, the third highest total in school history, and tallying a 1.29 goals against average. A native of of Belmont, Calif. and graduate of Carlmont High School, Lawrence registered 183 career saves which ranks her third all-time in career stops for the Hornets.

THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE

The Big Sky Conference enters its 48th year of athletic competition in 2010-11. The Big Sky is an NCAA Division I member in all sports, with member institutions classified in the Football Championship Subdivision (formally I-AA). For the fifth straight year, the Big Sky is a nine-team league. The current lineup includes Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State and Weber State. Northern Colorado is the newest member of the league, having joined the conference in 2006. The Big Sky Conference was established in

1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington. The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added

Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001. The Big Sky spreads across eight states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountain Front. The Big Sky is represented along the entire west coast with schools in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado. Of the eight western-most states in the contiguous United States only one, Nevada, is not represented in the Big Sky.

Quick Facts • Sacramento State is one of the largest universities in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of more than 29,000. The 300-acre campus is sheltered by more than 3,000 trees and dotted with flower gardens, including 3 million square feet of building space. Miles of trails stretch along the nearby river parkway, linking the University and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. • Quality teaching is a top priority, and classes are small and personalized. More than 80 percent of recent graduates say their professors were enthusiastic and genuinely enjoyed teaching. • Preparing students for a career is a vital part of the education here. Thousands of students from all majors earn academic credit working in internship and co-op positions, many of which are paid. • Sacramento State, often called “Sac State,” was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947 during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II. We moved to our permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. In 1972, we were renamed California State University, Sacramento. • The University recently completed an ambitious master plan (Destination 2010) that included 1.5 million square feet of new building space for additional housing and a recreation and wellness center. The initiative has resulted in new academic and student programs, partnerships with businesses, non-profit and public agencies, modernized classrooms and new facilities for students and faculty. • Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is available for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. The largest programs include teacher education, business, criminal justice, communication studies, psychology and computer science. Smaller class sizes and a focus on quality teaching promote faculty-student interaction.

• Attracting students from all over the world, the criminal justice program is one of the largest in the United States. • One in 24 residents of the six-county Sacramento Region is a Sacramento State graduate. Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003. As the first person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. He grew up in East Los Angeles with six siblings, graduating from high school at a time when students did not have the same options for higher education that they have today. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was a faculty member and chair of the Psychology Department before becoming the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. At Sacramento State, Dr. Gonzalez implemented his Destination 2010 initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university. The bold initiative seeks to make Sacramento State a campus of choice for students in the Sacramento region and beyond. Following his belief that universities and communities must work together to

improve lives and opportunities, Dr. Gonzalez serves on the Sutter Health Board of Directors and the Pomona College Board of Trustees. He previously served on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans and the Valley Vision Board of Directors. His service on several boards and commissions includes six years as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the accrediting agency for higher education institutions in the western United States. He also served as chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez is Sacramento State’s 11th president. His wife, Gloria, is also a graduate of the CSU. They have two sons.

Dr. Terry Wanless’ eight-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 19-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department has come to fruition over the last four years where the Hornets have combined to win 26 conference championships. That includes an unprecedented eight conference titles during both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years. In addition, the program has claimed three straight Big Sky Conference Women’s All-Sports Trophies. In fact, of the 347 Div. I athletics programs, SI.com ranked Sacramento State as the 36th best athletics program during the 2007-08 academic year. This past year (2009-10), the program finished 132nd in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the second highest ranked team in the Big Sky Conference. The 2008-09 West Region Athletic Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision, Wanless has overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change came during the spring of 2008 with the opening of the Broad Fieldhouse, which serves as the home to Hornet football and track and field, as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. The Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse was the first step of an elaborate plan that began with the passing of a referendum by the Sacramento State student body. That vote also led to the creation of a recreation and wellness center which will benefit the entire student body and open in September of 2010. Wanless has served on numerous NCAA committees, and recently completed a term as a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision selection committee and the Div. I Football Issues Committee. Previously, he was a member of the NCAA Football rules committee and the NCAA Peer Review committee. Wanless has been a visible member of the Sacramento State athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, attend the majority of Hornet home athletic events and support several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. The department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet 42 student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring asWOMEN’S well as academic counseling. SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

Over the last eight years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted over 2,200 term GPAs of 3.0 or above. At the conclusion of the 2010 spring semester, Hornet student-athletes combined for an overall GPA of 2.98, which is the highest mark since the program joined the Div. I ranks in 1991-92. His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily visible, are projects that have, and will continue to enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his eight years at Sacramento State, 25 teams and 145 individuals have advanced to NCAA postseason competition. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. During his eight years of leadership, Sacramento State has served as host to seven NCAA championships (four track, two rowing, one volleyball) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conferences. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughters Hadley and Leah, and son Jack. The Student-Athlete Resource Center offers academic advising, tutoring and mentoring, NCAA rules education and compliance, athletic financial services support, and life skills programming for all student-athletes of Sacramento State’s Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program. The S.A.R.C.’s services and programming are provided in an assortment of ways including individual advising, orientations, group and team meetings, coaches’ compliance and rules education sessions, freshmen seminar classes, and a variety of student development and academic workshops. S.A.R.C. Director Paul Edwards, Academic Athletic Services Coordinator Laurie Dahlberg, Football Athletic Advisor Bob Shook and Life Skills and Student-Athlete Development Coordinator Mark McGushin serve as the primary advisors to the student-athletes. Additionally, McGushin coordinates the mentoring program which addresses student-athletes experiencing academic difficulties. The goal of the athletic training staff is to provide all Sacramento State student-athletes with high quality health care. Headed by full-time certified athletic trainers Brandon Padilla, Heather Farwig and Joe Ramos, the Hornets’ athletic training facility provides state-of-the-art support and the services of highly trained sports medicine and health care professionals. Should an injury occur, student-athletes are seen immediately by their sport’s specific athletic trainer, and are referred, when necessary, to the appropriate medical provider or facility. Sacramento State boasts three athletic training facilities (two located in the physical education complex and one at the Broad Fieldhouse). All athletic training facilities are equipped with the finest therapeutic modalities and rehabilitative apparatus. A staff of three team physicians (Dr. Alan Hirahara, Dr. Ronald Sockolov, Dr. Harold Strauch) and a skillful and talented athletic training staff tend to the medical and rehabilitative needs of each and every studentathlete. Also assisting in the health of the student-athletes is a Kaiser physician, two dentists, a physical therapist and a chiropractor. Sacramento State’s athletic training staff consists of three full-time certified athletic trainers, three graduate assistants and more than 15 athletic training students preparing for a career in sports medicine.

workshops related to finding information on campus, in the community and NCAA resources in a variety of areas related to student life, welfare and career opportunities. Athletic Compliance and Financial Services Director Katherine Zedonis and Compliance Coordinator Shannon Hall are responsible for the administration of NCAA eligibility rules education and compliance for all intercollegiate teams, including issues related to athletic financial aid of student-athletes. The Athletic Compliance Office is responsible for developing, monitoring and enforcing a compliance program that ensures the integrity of the institution within the guidelines of the NCAA, Big Sky Conference and the University. Admission Counselor/NCAA Initial Eligibility Coordinator Josh Collins services Sacramento State student-athletes with admission processing responsibilities and monitoring of NCAA initial-eligibility requirements.
