BORISOVA Season Outlook

For just the second time since the turn of the century, the Sacramento State gymnastics team does not enter a season as the defending conference champion. The Hornets, who have won seven conference titles in the last nine years, fell just short of their third-straight Western Athletic Conference title last spring but managed to qualify for the NCAA Regionals for the third consecutive season. Sacramento State’s streak of conference titles began with four in a row to begin the century. The 2000 and 2001 teams won the Western Independent title before the 2002 and 2003 squads claimed the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation crown. After a second place showing at the MPSF meet in 2004, Sacramento State rebounded with another victory in 2005. Things were supposed to become more difficult in 2006 with the move to the WAC. However, the team responded to the pressure and finished first over perennial powers such as Boise State, Utah State and Southern Utah. Sacramento State then proved the first year was not a fluke by overcoming a series of early season injuries to claim a second straight WAC title in 2007. The Hornets will look to return to the top of the awards stand this spring and will have the advantage of competing at home for the WAC Championships for the first time in school history. “Our team goal is to win the WAC and advance to the NCAA Regionals again,” head coach Kim Hughes said. “We made a strong push to host the WAC meet this season for Marina (Borisova) and Amber’s (Basgall) senior

4

CHAN year. They are both local athletes who will get to end their career at home.” Borisova and Basgall are the lone two members of the senior class. The pair have been fixtures in the Hornet lineup in recent history and are poised to lead the team this season. Borisova has posted her name throughout the school record book and will again shine as an all-arounder. Originally from Kaliningrad, Russia, Borisova moved to Sacramento during high school and became a U.S. citizen last winter. A native of Turlock, Calif., Basgall is the only fifth-year member of the team. The all-arounder made a full recovery from back surgery in 2007 and returned to the squad a season ago. The pair are aided by a very experienced five-member junior class and four sophomores who have all competed. The roster is completed by 10 freshmen. Before Sacramento State gets a chance to win another conference title and advance to the postseason, the Hornets will have to face a schedule which includes five teams that competed at the NCAA Regionals a year ago. The home schedule is comprised of meets against UC Davis, Seattle Pacific, Illinois Sate, San Jose State, Boise State and Utah State. The road slate pits the team against Cal, Stanford, Washington, Southern Utah, UC Davis, New Hampshire and Bowling Green. The WAC Championships will be hosted at the Hornets Nest on March 21, while the six NCAA Regionals will take place on April 4. The NCAA will also continue its policy of taking the top 36 teams to the postseason based on their regional qualifying score, regardless of region.

STUBBLEFIELD Vault

Due to a variety of circumstances, vault has been the thorn in the Hornets’ side over the past two seasons. The team has cracked the all-time top 10 at the school just one time during that span but is poised to make its move in 2009. “Vault is our most improved event,” Hughes said. “We have great potential for high scores due to our increased start values. We had three 10.0 vaults and four 9.9s at our intrasquad meet (in December) and are hoping to add another 10.0 prior to the start of the season.” Sophomore Alycia Chan is the leading returner to the unit. Chan earned second team all-WAC honors as a freshman and led the team with an average of 9.673. During the year, the Langley, British Columbia, native finished first in the event three times and tied for sixth at the NCAA West Regional. Her top score of 9.875 is tied for ninth in school history. “Alycia looks fantastic,” Hughes said. “She’s in great physical shape and her confidence is incredible.” Borisova and junior Eryn Stubblefield return to the lineup and will be joined by Basgall, who started during her first two years with the team. All three have averaged at least 9.617 during one of their seasons with the Hornets. “Marina has raised her vault to a 10.0 and is performing consistently,” Hughes explained. “Plus, having Amber being able to vault for the first time in two years is a big help.” Sophomore Amanda Blauvelt and freshmen Cayla Boyce, Chantal Angyal and Mary Peck are all fighting for a spot in the top six.

HORNET GYMNASTICS

DYSON Uneven Bars

With six returners who have experience, bars is the most experienced event for Sacramento State. The team returns Borisova, Basgall, Stubblefield, Blauvelt, Lauren Dyson and Traci Takeda, and will also add the skills of newcomers Boyce and Lauren Mizuno into the lineup. “We have a lot of experience with six returners from a year ago,” Hughes said. “We are also working to upgrade everyone to ‘E’ dismounts.” Dyson, Basgall and Borisova were fixtures in nearly every meet last season. Borisova led the trio with an average of 9.735 and recorded a team season high of 9.875 against Seattle Pacific. Basgall averaged 9.608 while competing in every meet. Her average included a high of 9.825. Dyson tallied five scores of at least 9.700 in her 13 meets during the season and averaged 9.602. Despite the experience, Hughes has tinkered with the routines of his regulars. “Amber has a whole new routine this year which showcases her abilities,” Hughes said. “We also changed Marina’s dismount to a double layout.” Like Borisova, Stubblefield also added a double layout to her routine. The junior competed on bars in 10 meets last season and had a high of 9.700. Takeda has competed in the past and, according to coaches, has shown the ability to crack the top six. Boyce won the Idaho state level 10 title in both 2006 and 2008 while Mizuno was a level 10 regional qualifier.

NORVELL Balance Beam

Sacramento State’s success at the WAC Championships can be directly linked to its performance on beam. The Hornets have nearly rewritten the record book over the past two years, scoring the top seven marks in school history on the event. Five of those scores came in 2008 and all but one gymnast returns from that lineup. The corps is comprised of Borisova, Stubblefield, Chan, Lizzy Norvell and Takeda. However, Basgall, Blauvelt, Boyce and Zamolo are each challenging for a spot. “We have a lot of depth on beam,” Hughes said. “To be honest, we probably have enough for two competitive lineups.” A beam specialist, Norvell owns the top average among the returners with a 9.660 mark from a year ago. The Fresno, Calif., native had four scores of at least 9.825, including the NCAA West Regional where she tied for 11th overall. Chan features a unique routine and was very steady as a freshman where she averaged 9.629 and had a career high of 9.800. “Chan is firing on all cylinders,” Hughes said. “She is in midseason form right now (a month prior to the start of the year).” Stubblefield matched her career high at the NCAA West Regional with a 9.850 and tied for eighth overall in the meet — the highest mark by a Hornet. Borisova averaged 9.619 a year ago while Takeda had five scores of at least 9.700 in the leadoff spot in the lineup. Basgall is training for the event for the first time in her five years while Zamolo is looking to return to the lineup after missing last season.

BASGALL Floor Exercise

Change is the theme on floor for the Hornets in 2008. Although the team returns four starters from a year ago, and five overall, nearly every gymnast has altered their routine. The biggest changes come from Borisova, Basgall and Chan. Borisova, who won the WAC floor title as a freshman and sophomore, has completely redone her routine with new music and elements that give the performance a “Russian flair” according to coaches. Basgall and Chan have each added a double Arabian mount to their routines which already had the ability to score high. Last season, Borisova led the team with an average of 9.673 on floor and has scored 9.925 on two occasions during her career. Basgall and Chan each set their career highs on the event at the WAC Championships. Basgall scored 9.825 while Chan recorded a 9.850 to place sixth and earn second team all-WAC honors. Stubblefield ranked second on the team with an average of 9.627 and also set her career high with a 9.875 during the season. Zamolo is also slated to return to floor after redshirting last season with a shin injury. As a freshman, she competed in 12 meets. Blauvelt and four freshmen (Bethany Barrick, Boyce, Mizuno, and Chantal Angyal) also have the skills to make the lineup. Barrick was the regional floor champion in 2007 and was the state level 9 champion in 2005. Angyal’s routine features a triple-in, which rivals Borisova’s according to Hughes. Boyce finished seventh on floor at the 2008 Junior Olympics.

The Western Athletic Conference features some of the most exciting competition at some of the most diverse campuses in the nation. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s largest and most accessible media markets. In addition, the academic reputation of many of the WAC schools is unparalleled, with some of the nation’s most respected institutions of higher learning among the WAC ranks. This season marks the 47th for the WAC, making it the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. While the WAC has a lengthy history, gymnastics enters its third year in the conference this season. The lineup of teams is comprised of WAC members Boise State, San Jose State and Utah State and affiliate members Cal State Fullerton, Sacramento State and Southern Utah. The WAC began operation with the 1962-63 academic year with 10 sports. The first championship was held in November of 1962 when Arizona won the cross country title. Arizona State claimed the league’s first national title after winning the College World Series in 1965. Fresno State won the last title in 2008 at the College World Series. Presently, the WAC crowns champions in 19 sports — eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

THE COACHES Kim Hughes Head Coach 29th Year Chico State, ‘77

After 31 years with Sacramento State women’s gymnastics (28 as head coach), Kim Hughes has developed a program from the Div. II ranks and created a model of success at the Div. I level. However, despite all of his previous success, not many people would have predicted how quickly the Hornets would adapt to the Western Athletic Conference. In its first season in the league, Sacramento State captured the WAC title and earned a spot in the NCAA West Regional. That performance made Hughes the West Region and WAC Coach of the Year. The Hornets then tacked on a second title in as many years with a narrow victory in 2007 and advanced to the NCAA West Regional for the third time in school history. Last season, the Hornets missed their third consecutive WAC title but still managed to qualify for the NCAA Regionals for the third season in a row. The WAC championships are just the latest conquests for the Hornets. In fact, Sacramento State has won seven league titles in the last nine years. The streak began with back-to-back Western Independent Conference titles in 2000 and 2001 and then two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships (2002-03). After finishing second in 2004, the Hornets reclaimed the MPSF crown with a convincing two-point victory in 2005. For his efforts, Hughes was named MPSF Women’s Gymnastics Coach of the Year following the 2002 season. Individually, the Hornets have advanced 25 gymnasts to the NCAA regional since 1994. That list includes three in 2005 and four in 2004. Hughes

has also coached Terri Meyer to the NCAA Div. II beam title in 1984, Rebecca Seebirt to three USAG vault titles (1994, 1995, 1997), Natalie Cadondon to the USAG all-around title in 1995 and Toni Petersen to the 2000 floor crown in the NIT. In addition, the Hornets have earned 40 All-America honors during his tenure. In the classroom, the gymnastics team has also flourished under Hughes. In the spring of 2008, the squad had a 3.15 team gpa. That total included 10 student-athletes who were above a 3.0 and seven who posted better than a 3.5. His knowledge of the sport, coupled with his enthusiasm for teaching, has presented numerous opportunities for Hughes to coach at varying levels of competition. A 1976 graduate of Chico State with a B.A. in physical education, Hughes competed collegiately for the Wildcats after a successful high school gymnastics career. He was the Northern California high school still rings champion as a senior in 1971. He joined the Hornet staff as an assistant to the women’s gymnastics program in 1978 and was named head coach in 1982. During his collegiate coaching career, Hughes served as a member of the Western Regional Committee while acting as the Western Regional meet director in 1987. When the Hornets were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference, Hughes served as commissioner of gymnastics from 1982-84 and was named conference coach of the year in 1984. With Sacramento State’s move to Div. I in 1991 and the NCAA’s decision to drop a Div. II championship, Hughes worked to provide postseason competition opportunities for smaller collegiate gymnastics programs. He twice served as Western Region chairperson for the USAG where he was involved with developing the USAG collegiate championship into a viable national competition open to men’s and women’s varsity and club programs which qualify in a format similar to the NCAA selection. An active community leader, Hughes is involved with the United Way, serving as the athletics department representative on the campus committee for seven years. He was a cosponsor of the Special Olympics gymnastics competition held at Sacramento State from 1985-87. He also has been the athletics department’s union representative since 1993. In the spring of 2007, Hughes also earned the Distinguished Faculty Award at Sacramento State. That award is presented to just one faculty member each year and requires a nomination from a peer. Hughes rounds out his coaching resumé with various club appointments, including nearly 20 years with the Nor-Cal Gymnastics Camp in Santa Cruz, Calif. He has also worked for the River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento as well as the Chico and El Dorado Hills Gymnastics Clubs. Hughes holds a master’s degree in physical education from Sacramento State. He and his wife, Darla, have two children, 24-year-old Jonathan and 22-year-old Jordan.

THE COACHES Randy Solorio

Tamara Ross

Assistant Coach 24th Year Sacramento State, ‘94

Assistant Coach 11th Year San Diego State, ‘71

Randy Solorio, the 2006 West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, has proven to be a mainstay of Hornet gymnastics in his 23 years of service to the program. “Randy is a motivator as well as a great technician,” head coach Kim Hughes said. “He has a keen ability to deal with the individual student-athlete and help them reach their athletic potential. “He knows how to make gymnastics fun for the athlete.” Hughes and Solorio were first acquainted in 1978 when the duo began coaching at The Gymnastics School and River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento. Solorio ended his tenure with the club in 1982 to pursue his theatre career. He would return to Sacramento in 1986 and the longest tenured partnership at Sacramento State began. A three-time All-American on vault, high bar and floor exercise while competing for the Aggies of UC Davis from 1980-82, Solorio is responsible for all aspects of coaching from on-floor duties to recruiting and conditioning. Solorio holds a bachelor of science degree in exercise science and a master’s in sports performance from Sacramento State and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist. He can often be found teaching weight training, ballroom dancing and other physical education classes as part of his campus-wide activity. Recognized as the Western Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 1990 and the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997, Solorio is known for his dedication, technical expertise and rapport with student-athletes. Solorio’s coaching experience has varied from high school and club programs to the collegiate level. He was a class and team coach for Byers Gymnastics Center in Sacramento and coached the girls’ gymnastics team at Valley High School. Not only a gifted gymnast and coach, Solorio has found much success performing in local theater, musicals and in modeling. In addition, Solorio toured nationally with The Muppet Show on Tour, and Show Your Spirit. He recently appeared in a series of commercials for KQCA-58. His daughter, Kaycee Marie, was born the day after the Hornets finished second at the USAG Nationals in 1996.

8

Tamara Ross returns as the team’s choreographer for the 2009 season. Ross had previously coached the Hornets from 1998-2001 before taking a two-year break. She returned to the team in 2004 and helped Sacramento State record two of the three best floor scores in school history, including a 49.375 against Cal State Fullerton and UC Davis. Under Ross’ watch, Stefanie Aeder also set the individual school record on the floor with a 9.950 and advanced to the NCAA West Regional in 2004 and 2005. She brings a long and varied experience to the position, having been involved with gymnastics coaching in private clubs since 1984. Ross is a member of the NorCal Coaches Association and was named Optional Coach of the Year in 1996. She was voted Choreographer of the Year in 1994, 1995 and 1997. In the summer of 2005, Ross was the head coach of the U.S. open women’s gymnastics team at the Maccabi Games in Israel. In that role, she helped lead the team to a second place finish and also had individuals place second on floor and beam. She was again honored in December of 2007 by being named the head coach of the U.S. team at the Pan-Am Maccabi Games in Argentina. Ross was involved with the 1999 USA Gymnastics National Championships which were held in Sacramento and was a member of the Sacramento Sports Commission local organizing committee. She is a 1971 graduate of San Diego State and holds a master’s degree from Sacramento State. Ross and her husband, Arthur, have two sons, Brian and Greg.

THE COACHES Jamie Donkin

Ashlei Baker

Graduate Assistant 6th Year Sacramento State, ‘06

Student Assistant 1st Year

Jamie Donkin returns for her sixth season with the Sacramento State coaching staff. After serving as meet manager for two seasons, Donkin shifted her attention to coaching in 2006. This year, she will work primarily on the floor and beam, and will continue to assist with choreography. Donkin came to Sacramento State in 2003 and was a member of the gymnastics team that season. During the year, she competed twice on beam, including a 9.650 against Cal State Fullerton. Prior to coming to Sacramento State, Donkin was a California state beam champion at level 8 in 2001. She was also a three-time regional all-around qualifier in 1998, 2001 and 2002. In 1998, she also advanced to nationals. Donkin earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science in December of 2006. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in exercise science at Sacramento State.

Ashlei Baker is in her first year as a student assistant with the Hornets. Baker joined the Sacramento State team in 2007 but missed the entire season after having shoulder surgery. She returned in 2008 and performed on vault in the first two meets of the season before re-injuring her shoulder. In her current role, Baker assists the coaching staff with office administration and meet management. She has also worked as an academic tutor. Baker is majoring in social work.

Megan Lueders

Alyssa Onaga Student Assistant 1st Year Sacramento State, ‘09

Former Sacramento State gymnast Alyssa Onaga is in her first season as a student assistant with the Hornets. Onaga assists with the day-to-day operations of the office and also at practice. Onaga came to Sacramento State in 2005 and competed four years with the team. The Honolulu native was a member of two Western Athetic Conference championship teams in 2006 and 2007. The Hornets also advanced to the NCAA Regionals during her final three seasons. As a bars and floor specialist, Onaga tied her career high on bars with a 9.600 as a senior. Her top floor score was 9.450 as a sophomore. An exercise science major, Onaga will graduate following the spring semester of 2009.

Team Manager 2nd Year

Megan Lueders returns for her second season as team manager. Lueders helps the coaching staff at practice and meets where needed. Her primary responsibilities include filming and meet management. A native of Honolulu, Lueders trained with the Hawaiian Island Twisters for 10 years before coming to Sacramento State. While there, she was a teammate of current student assistant Alyssa Onaga.

Quick Facts • Sacramento State is the seventh largest university in the 23-campus CSU system, enrolling a multicultural student body of nearly 29,000. The 300-acre campus is sheltered by more than 3,000 trees and dotted with flower gardens, including 3 million square feet of building space. Miles of trails stretch along the nearby river parkway, linking the University and student housing with recreational areas such as Folsom Lake and Old Sacramento. • Quality teaching is a top priority, and classes are small and personalized. More than 80 percent of recent graduates say their professors were enthusiastic and genuinely enjoyed teaching. • Preparing students for a career is a vital part of the education here. Thousands of students from all majors earn academic credit working in internship and co-op positions, many of which are paid. • Sacramento State, often called “Sac State,” was founded as Sacramento State College in 1947 during a time of intense demand for higher education after World War II. We moved to our permanent location on the banks of the historic American River in 1953. In 1972, we were renamed California State University, Sacramento. • The University is in the midst of an ambitious new master plan that will remake Sacramento State into a residential campus and add some 1.5 million square feet of building space. The plan, to guide campus growth in coming decades, includes housing for as many as 5,000 students and a recreation and wellness center. • Unlimited bus and light rail service throughout Sacramento is free for University students. Students may attend all home athletic events for free and attend other campus events for free or at a discount. More than half the students join one of the more than 250 student organizations, which include 35 fraternities and sororities.

• Sacramento State offers 60 undergraduate and 40 graduate degrees in eight Colleges. Teacher education is the largest academic program, followed by business, criminal justice, communication studies, psychology and computer science. The student-to-faculty ratio is 20 to 1; more than 70 percent of classes have fewer than 30 students. • Attracting students from all over the world, the criminal justice program is one of the largest in the United States. • One in 26 residents of the six-county Sacramento Region is a Sacramento State graduate. The University directly and indirectly contributes more than $900 million to the region’s economy annually. • Almost 700 new school teachers graduate from Sacramento State each year. • Seventy-eight percent of students say that Sacramento State was their first or only choice. • Sacramento State was the site of the 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Div. I Track & Field Championships, and the Sacramento State Aquatic Center was the site of the 1997, 1999, 2004 and 2005 NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships. This year, Sacramento State will host the NCAA Div. I Women’s Volleyball Final Four on Dec. 13-15 at Arco Arena. • Sacramento State hosted the most successful U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials ever in 2000, and hosted the event again in 2004. • Famous Sacramento State alumni include actor Tom Hanks, Grammy award winner Bobby McFerrin, former cohost of Good Morning America Joan Lunden, former host of the Early Show, Rene Syler, stand-up comedian Brian Posehn, actor Carlos Alazraqui, film director Joe Carnahan, Stockton mayor Edward Chavez, famous economist and author Richard J. Maybury, former KTLA Morning News Giselle Fernández and founding member of the Village People David Hodo. • Famous Sacramento State athletics alumni include retired nine-year NFL offensive lineman and two-time Super Bowl winner John Gesek, Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, 10-year NFL fullback Daimon Shelton, eight-year New England Patriots long snapper and three-time Super Bowl winner Lonie Paxton, former 12-year NFL defensive back Lorenzo Lynch, CFL Hamilton Tiger-Cats offensive lineman Marko Cavka, CFL Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Ricky Ray, CFL Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Charles Roberts, longtime Arena Football League quarterback Aaron Garcia and AFL wide receiver Fred Otis Amey.

Partnering With Athletics For Excellence When the Sacramento State student body overwhelmingly passed a referendum in the spring of 1995, it began a partnership between the Hornet Athletics Department and Associated Students, Inc. That vote by the students helps fund the athletics department and has been a key factor in the recent success. ASI is a student-run, non-profit corporation that represents the student body in the governance of the University. One of ASI’s goals is to facilitate student participation in a full range of campus life and learning outside the classroom. Guided by this goal, ASI supports intercollegiate, recreational, and intramural sports, which is not only an important part of campus life, but an arena in which leadership skills are developed. ASI also operates the Green Sting student organization, the Sacramento State Aquatic Center (which is home to the Hornet rowing team), the Challenge Center, Peak Adventures and numerous other student organizations.

• Sacramento is part of a Capital Region with nearly 2 million people in the heart of Northern California, one of the country’s most beautiful areas. Within easy driving distance are San Francisco, the Napa and Sonoma valleys, the historic gold country and the Lake Tahoe region’s ski slopes. • Sacramento is notably diverse racially, ethnically, and by household income, and has a notable lack of inter-racial disharmony. In 2002, Time magazine and the Civil Rights Project of Harvard University identified Sacramento as the most racially/ethnically integrated major city in America. • Sacramento is one of the most affordable big cities in California. • Sacramento is home to the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, Sacramento River Cats (the Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate) and the WNBA’s Sacramento Monarchs. • Sacramento hosts the world’s largest traditional jazz festival each Memorial Day weekend. It has also become a tourist center with attractions including the State Capitol building, North America’s largest railroad museum, the Old Sacramento historic area, the California State History Museum and the Crocker Art Museum. • Founded in 1849, Sacramento is the cultural, education, business and governmental center of a fourcounty metropolitan region.

Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003. As the first person in his family to graduate from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. He grew up in East Los Angeles with six siblings, graduating from high school at a time when students did not have the same options for higher education that they have today. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was a faculty member and chair of the Psychology Department before becoming the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. At Sacramento State, Dr. Gonzalez implemented his Destination 2010 initiative to transform the campus into a premier metropolitan university. The bold initiative seeks to make Sacramento State a campus of choice for students in the Sacramento region and elsewhere.

Following his belief that universities and communities must work together to improve lives and opportunities, Dr. Gonzalez serves on the Sutter Health Board of Directors and the Pomona College Board of Trustees. He previously served on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans and the Valley Vision Board of Directors. His service on several boards and commissions includes six years as a commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the accrediting agency for higher education institutions in the western United States. He also served as chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Gonzalez is Sacramento State’s 11th president. His wife, Gloria, is also a graduate of the CSU. They have two sons.

Dr. Terry Wanless’ six-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 17-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department came to fruition over the last two years where the Hornets have claimed an unprecedented eight conference championships during both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years. That included a landslide victory in the race for the Big Sky Conference Women’s All-Sports Trophy in 2007-08. In fact, of the 330 Div. I athletics programs, SI.com ranked Sacramento State as the 36th best athletics program during the 2007-08 academic year. Wanless has also overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change came during the spring of 2008 with the opening of the Broad Fieldhouse. The building will serve as the home to the Hornet football and track and field programs as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning. The Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse is the first step of an elaborate plan that began with the passing of a referendum by the Sacramento State student body. That vote will also lead to the creation of a recreation and wellness center which will benefit the entire student body. Wanless has been a visible member of the Sacramento State athletics family, constantly representing the University and department at public outings and speaking engagements. His commitment to the student-athlete has also been clear as both he and his wife, Joanne, attend the majority of Hornet home athletic events and support several teams on the road. His leadership and academic support have been evident to the student-athletes in other ways as well. The department’s Life Skills Program has seen rapid growth, significantly increasing the number of summer and fifth-year scholarships available to Hornet student-athletes. The Life Skills program has also launched the program’s first computer lab and offers Hornet student-athletes tutoring as well as academic counseling. Over the last six years, Sacramento State student-athletes have posted over 1,700 term GPAs of 3.0 or above. Additionally, over 400 Hornets have earned conference all-academic honors during that same time period.

His efforts in restoring the department’s booster club structure as well as aggressively improving the University’s collegiate licensing program, while not readily visible, are projects that will surely enhance the program’s financial footing in years to come. Athletically, the Hornets have also seen continued growth and success on the field of play. During his six years at Sacramento State, 20 teams and 48 individuals have advanced to NCAA postseason competition. Wanless’ efforts to put the Hornets on the map have been instrumental in helping make Sacramento State the unofficial “home of NCAA Championships”. Last year, the Hornets were tabbed to serve as the host institution for 2007 Div. I Volleyball Championships as well as the 2008 Div. I Women’s Golf West Regional. During Wanless’ six years of leadership, Sacramento State has now served as host to seven NCAA championships (four track, two rowing, one volleyball) as well as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Prior to Sacramento State, Wanless served as athletics director at the University of North Dakota from 1990-1999, guiding the program to one of its most successful decades in school history. During that time, North Dakota enjoyed strong competitive success, winning four NCAA national championships and 36 conference titles. Additionally, 25 other teams finished second in their respective conference standings. Before his position at North Dakota, Wanless was director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Carolina for four years and held a variety of positions, including director of intercollegiate athletics, at Towson University in Maryland. Wanless earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Black Hills State, a master’s degree in physical education from Northern Illinois and a doctorate in athletics administration from Temple. He and his wife, Joanne, are the parents of two children. Their daughter, Heather, and her husband, Chad Collins, reside in Lexington, Ky., with their daughter Hadley and son Jack. Their son Troy, and his wife, Jesi, live in Minneapolis with their daughter Elli.
